Steve Vai - Jemini Distortion Pedal Demo

- You're stomping all over my brilliant idea, but that's OK, you're supposed to.
The goal was to create a schizophrenic type distortion pedal that allows you to have two different settings with two different sounding distortion pedals, all wrapped up in a psyco-delic bullet proof package. Now you can get your dirty little groove on in public... legally.
Stomp on!
- Steve

I first watched this when I was 17 and I was absolutely blown away, here I am at 31 still just as in awe at his playing.
Agreed man. I was 16 or 17 when I first watched this. 29 now, this year I'm gonna be 30. I was also blown away that I learned the lydian part that the first Steve plays at the beginning. Beautiful!
@@justanotheranhedonicguy5132 Crazy how fast time flies right!? Haha I've been meaning to do that for so long but I forgot. Have you ever seen the video of him playing the Jem with 3 guitar necks at G3? He actually plays the exact same melody with the clean channel as part of a song! Definitely check it out if you've not!
Dude same age range too! This video has aged like really good wine and reminded me when I first found o it about Steve Vai fully. Beyond for the love of God. This made me want to look up more info about this guy! This video made him more awesome!!
I was 15.. lmao god damn time flies
This is hilarious, same exact thing. Saw this around the same age and still come back to watch it 15 years later.
This "Advertisement" continues to inspire me all these years later. Vai is the most emotionally intelligent guitarist of all time. Praise Hail VAI
I had to check Wikipedia to see if Steve Vai had a twin brother, because seriously, that is some good editing!
Right? I was really surprised too!
Nicely said. I knew the score when i first saw this, all those years ago, but yeah, it's so cleverly done... \m/ (:o)
If only there were two Steve Vai's omg
reminds me of the Jared Dines videos
@@sashingopaul3111 its the other way round, jared was nearly in diapers in 08.
this video literally made me change my opinion of him, he's a funny guy!
+Alan Peach Yah, he's become more humble year by year, especially after losing the world championships guitar battle against Ralph Macchio in the Discovery Channel documentary entitled "Crossroads".
+Alan Peach His attitude has always been as great as his playing.
I met him a while back. He's probably one of the nicest dudes you'll ever meet
+Alan Peach. That was a surprise for everyone. I lost money there. I lost badly when I bet against Rocky in "Rocky II as well. Gambling in the 80s was hard on me.
Alan Peach actually he is more humble than satriani ( he was very though with Vai on the past but trough the years Vai was better like a guitar player and sometimes play the 7 strings guitar )
I've never heard of steve vai, but so far my impression of him is that he really likes playing with himself while everyone watches.
He's doing this for both entertainment value and because it had never been done before in this manner.
No one better like this comment
One of the best live shows I’ve ever been to was Steve Vai in Houston. Just rocked the roof off the place.
Very poor choice of words
🤣
Steve Vai - "I like playing with you!"
Steve Vai - "Yeh, I know"
I just can't help feeling that while the rest of us are struggling to bring our genius to the surface, he's struggling to keep his genius close enough to the ground where we can still understand it enough to enjoy it.
Nine years, not one like? Here ya go pal:
You described perfectly
This comment is as godly as his playing!
It doesn't matter which "Vai" plays, they're both amazing. Pedal sounds phenomenal.
this was the best-coordinated split-screen conversation I've ever seen. Only a good musician could pull something like this off.
Decades of double-tracking!
Only a true creative mind and genius artist like Steve Vai could legitimately pull this presentation off so effectively.
2024 anyone? I come back to this video at least once a year.
He just has that tone that no one else has. Signature tone like EVH that no one else has. Damn is it beautiful.
That first chord progression that he does on the 7 string is amazing.
It is! It lives rent free in my head.
It’s been 11 years yet I never knew where this chord progression was from.
Anyone know where to find the full song? Or is it just Steve’s improv?
@@luiswres21just improvise
Regardless of his style or what you think of Steve Vai....he is very consistent!
Always pushing to be creative in new ways with everything he does, and this video is perfect example.
Heck of an entertaining piece to self promote, self deprecate, demonstrate the nuts out of a new product and make it funny all at same time. I bet the editing was quite the technical task to boot!
Nice job Steve.
Steve is the kind of guy who stands in front of his bathroom mirror every morning...gives himself a big smile and says something like "Dude..you are so AWESOME..gimme 5!"
I've got a bunch of concert recordings of Mahavishnu from between 1972 and 1975 and there is some stuff that's on these recordings that just flat out unreal in how McLaughlin played. A lot of it isn't on RUclips or released albums. Fast? Depending on the gig, they would sometimes kick up the tempo to unreal levels that was mind blowing. He didn't rely too much on trick playing, no real gimmicks being used, but he brought different forms of styles of music which aided in his musical expression.
5:30 I love his 7 string playing
Bryce Saylor van Halen cant stop loving you post solo guitar, same notes btw
5:15- takes me somewhere, some amazing galaxy,.. Vai is a legend.
No one sounds like Steve Vai. Sure, there's lots of technically skilled guitarists in the world, but in addition to the technical skills, Vai composes and plays like he's from another planet.
2:43-4:47 This solo alone made Steve Vai my guitar hero.
when steve vai called himself jack butler, it was a reference to the movie crossroads, where he plays a guitarist. this man is amazing
Vai‘s pickups are really powerful, the sound is extremly bright, like a golden light from the sky.
No, YOU rock Vai, no YOUU rock Vai! I loved this, and I apprecaite your sense of humor:) I now have to go and check out this pedal, even if this is a few years old. Thanks!
He is beyond amazing. He has always been humble just in the begging he was more caught up in a whirlwind. He went from Zappa to replacing Yngwie in Albatras, to Solo, to David Lee Roth, to solo, to Whitesnake, to solo again. He has been so stinking busy and now older and slowed down to enjoy it more. He has always paid his respect to the man who taught him, Joe Satriani. And listen to him humble himself when he is speaking at the Les Paul awards.
Steve Vai is So Fuc*ing Awesome. I will never Play like Vai, Even though i love improv on my guitar. Its just Everyone has a Style, And If that sounds good to other guitarists then Embrace that Style!!!
Rock On Everyone (Including you Steve!!!!)
I've got this pedal and I love it! What's best about this demo to me is besides the comedy, it isn't misleading. Y'know how sometimes the demo sounds awesome but then you sound nothing like it because you don't have all of the other awesome goodies that the artist in the demo has and their pedal has maybe been modded, but here this isn't the case. I don't sound anything like Steve Vai and I don't aim to, but you can get Vai sounds with this pedal. Thanks for this great and accurate demo :)
You make the most gorgeous faces when you play
14 years later still holds up
Man,some real talent. Best of the best imo.
This video is very funny! Love the reactions from the 2 Steve's. Great sounds from the pedals and stellar playing, of course.
steve vai feat. steve vai.
No, it's the otherwise. It's Steve Vai feat. Steve Vai
I've watched this at least fifteen times and I still crack up while I'm simultaneously being amazed with his awesomeness. And yeah, he does have a massive ego but how can you not have an ego like that when you're this amazing and you know it. The beautiful thing about Vai is that he's not an asshole about it. He knows how amazing he is but he also knows how human he is.
Even making a goofy video, he's STILL the greatest guitarist ever!!!!
he calls himself Jack Butler... it's funny, coz he played Jack butler in crossroads...
+The Mongoose Man ha well I did not know that
Musically speaking, as good as everyone says he is, the more you know about music the more you're blown away by what Steve Vai does and can do. Production-wise, I would've called this video/infomercial cheesy if it wasn't for his acting and editing chops. This video was well done!
thet means: Steve Vai's favorite person is Steve Vai
no shit.
Yes exactly !
Yeah I agree! It's fun, entertaining and actually demonstrates the product in it's full glory.
And man, the song on the end was a free gift!
4:47 is priceless haha
two Steve Vai's, who is the best?? unbelievable this guy!!! sorry for the bad English, but I'm Brasilian! kiss (Neto ribeiro)
i came back to this at 28, first heard it at 15, it still sounds as good
I must be the only person on earth who has never heard of Steve Vai's music.
His guitar playing is in another universe + he has great sense of humour.
What song does he play at 5:15?????? I love the sound.
it's a modified drop a tunning
excuse my english i'm french
+SharkTooth57 I don't know what song it is, it could be just one of his licks, he is freaking great. I don't know what it is but I love it too.
Seven string improvised song. Nothing I've heard in any of his songs.
the crying machine
Pedal? I've just been watching god.. I mean Steve Vai beat his guitar stupid. *bowing*
Jack Butler :D
Steve sent me here - to this day, still amazing and hilarious!
That actually sounds really good. I'm a huge fan of the sound coming from their amps. I might have to look into this pedal.
This is how all reviews should be done.
@SuperPacman777
True Temperament fret system. Keeps the guitar intonated throughout the fretboard.
For most of us weekend warriors, being slightly sharp or flat across the board probably wouldn't be that big of a deal, but those thin necks do tend to warp, and mr. vai seeks more perfection than the rest of us.
I think Vai is extremely nice personally, straightforward, and has a great sense of humor. He's a nuyawka! It goes without saying that he is probably the greatest rock fusion guitarist to ever exist. On top of that, he plays and writes with great emotion, sings very well, and is gorgeous to boot. As to his sexuality, his bio is straight but his androgynous looks fit the times for those cool enough to appreciate them. Vai's the whole package. I pray he never stops playing.
I think first watching this one when I was like 11 is the thing that made me wanna start playing 7 string guitars!
That tone on the 7 is just godly :)
Just got my pedal in the mail and hooked it up to my 150 watt line6 amp and it sounds amazing straight up! Thank you Steve for this wonderfull pedal youve designed, everything about it is just really cool. Its making me hot just looking at it!!"oh I wish I had my fan on" !!
Such a sense of humor! I could watch this all day.
I saw this video 13 years ago… I need this pedal
There's nothing else that can fill you with such a powerful sense of self-confidence as this video :D Now it's enough to think that no matter what occurs to me in this endless, tiresome earthly struggle, my life can still be fulfilled after I purchase that pedal... Thanks, Steve, without you I wouldn't have been able to pass my A-levels :D
The "Raw" Clean sound of this amp set-up is phenomenal... You could make a Bozz Metal Zone sound brilliant under these conditions, oh, and with Steve driving it!
this video is hysterical. classic Vai. can't wait to see him in October. Vegas is gonna rock!
So it's kind of like having overdrive and distortion in the same pedal? Very utilitarian I must say, since it can accomodate usage with just about any clean or dirty setting on any given amp channel. This would be a good workhorse pedal for the gigging guitarist. Seems like you can get a wide variety of distorted tones. Very well-designed on Steve's part!
Damn this is from 2008 IT'S IN 720P
Steve looks good here
Homie still looks good
keep looking good
It's called True Temperament, the frets are made in a way the intervals are perfect between every fret.
I don't know about the sound of this pedal, got to hear it by itself without any other pedal added. but I loved this video, Steve you are awesome.
@mooniethecat no. He said "Dip Jems" His Jem Guitars with a swirled paint design like the design of the pedal.
The swirled paint design is done by dipping the guitar body into a deep bucket (or a vat) with the paint floating on the surface of water.
This is amazing, the song they jammed on together rocks. I want one of these pedals for the stuff I am going to be doing.
Jack butler, what a guy!
Great demo and some top notch editing 👌
The editing and quality was especially good for 2008
@DarkFire2313 the frets on his guitar are like that because a company whos name i cannot remember showed him the design and he liked it. He explains it in his gear tour and it makes it so that every cord is actually in key not somewhat and every cord be a little off.
Apart from the incredible playing, hats off to the incredible double act. That's timing!
I am so lucky to have been born in a time while you are here...
I own this pedal, it's amazing 😊
Steve Vai, you rock ✌🏻🎸🎸
Thank you Ibanez for this wonderful pedal 👏🏻👏🏻
Cool! It's everithing sounds good in your hand through amazing Carvin amp. Without any pedals.
Oddly I enjoyed Steve collaborating with Steve. Great pedal too!
Easily my very favorite video of all time. A true gift from the Gods.
I'll vouch for the Jemini. I picked one up used and it sounds as good as it does here (provided you have a quality guitar and a nice tube amp).
Chris Hare line 6 is just as good
Vai is also Italian. And what's really strange is when watching Frank Zappa and Steve Vai play together in the video "steve vai frank zappa roma 1982", at the end of the video is a picture of Frank Zappa as the Vitruvian Man.
@ClassicShotMK3 Hey dude, I guess I should've specified. What I meant is that his tone is not dry. On his "clean tone" he has reverb, chorus, and probably some delay, so when he turns on the distortion, you're really hearing all that PLUS the distortion pedal. A fair demo of the pedal would be if he had no effects on at all. Just guitar into the distortion pedal, into the amp. That's my opinion anyway, I think that's how you would really heard the true sound of the pedal :)
Right when vai starts playing the 7-string is just purely amazing!!!
I really liked this video. I thought the format was great, definitely didn't see "Jack Butler" coming (loved that reference). Also liked the innocent kind of humor and I thought he acted it out well, definitely didn't seem tacked on to me. I don't have much experience with effects and related gear myself, but I definitely want to check the Gemini Distortion Pedal out now. Along with checking out reviews, of course.
you inspire me and everyone that hears you... "your a sound lad" as we say in Ireland.
Impeccable timing here.
This video is still so great!
@SolKingGutiar98 its from the Movie Crossroads Steve plays a guitarist who sold his soul to the devil an his name in the movie is Jack Butler. He battles Ralph Machio or how ever its spelled.
If one learns 10 or 12 different musical styles, and they learn them with a high level of authenticity, they have that much to draw from in terms of soloing, but also song writing. Jazz, Classical indian pushes the player to learn how to improvise to a higher degree. Learning as many classical composers brings in more wealth in composition and how to do things with counter melodies/rhythms/harmonies and dynamics. Learning old school funk brings in syncopation/feel.
look at that pick movement ! flawless
I have got to get this pedal!! Besides being the coolest looking thing ever it sounds amazing!!
Steve Vai the legend, not only is he melting our faces... but hes eating his
We need more videos like this please !
I wish someone could tab the begining of the jam. Solo licks. Good stuff. Love it
two vais facial expressions at once is probably one of the finest things ive ever seen
John played stuff where you thought he was using a wammy bar, but he wasn't back then, just pretty much straight through with only a volume pedal and MAYBE a Maestro phase shifter for that subtle Leslie type tone. Personally, i love the sound of a guitar through a Leslie speaker, which some guys used back in the 60's and early 70's psychedelic era. Nothing like a Les Paul or Strat through a Leslie with a little preamp distortion. I think players should focus on blending more musical styles.
Brilliant work you put out, Mr. Vai.
You Rock Vai
ive watched this 5 times so far....just for the sheer entertainment and the music...o yeh..and the pedal is nice too xD
I like this video so much that I downloaded this video 4 times.
typedeaf not only you do that :D
The LP is not considered a signature model guitar, because there are signature models based of it. The Jem on the other hand was the signature model that gave origin to the RG, and has been running as a signature model for almost 26 years now. The Les Paul on the other hand has spawned huge amounts of signature models, so it cant be considered a signature model itself, not anymore at least.
8:09 omg that whammy bar action stole my heart right out of my chest. Ummmmm.
I love that last chord in the second demo.
Forever Alone Steve Vai
@spirogrinder2 He uses "True Temperament" Fretboards, which apparently makes chords sound more in tune.
kinda wish that you could use both sides of the pedal at the same time. But that's ok. It is still freaking awesome.
I just tryed something and i think i'm really close to that sound ! try this : get two chorus one on chorus 1Hz/10Hz intensity 5/6 width 3/6
and the other one in pitch mode 0.2Hz intensity 5.5/6 and width 1/6
Jeeeez two Steve Vai's!!!! Urh that's OP!!! Devs need to nerf that sh*t.. Great Stuff Steve😄
2 Steve's, something we need but we don't deserve...
5:31-6:34 And I thought a seven string was only for nu metal! I am beyond impressed.
