- Guitar Virtuoso STEVE VAI Live Sound Check From the Stage at the Robinson PAC in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
I had the opportunity to be present for and video record this sound check. What an honor and a pleasure! Steve, his band, and his entire crew were so humble and just really nice people.
Please excuse the audio on this video as the song opens up... the microphone on the camera could not handle the SPL (Sound Pressure Level) from the stage, and it breaks up a little, sounding like the crackling of a dirty vinyl LP record. I didn't have the opportunity to get a direct audio feed from the board to sync up with my video footage. Maybe next time. :-)
All I can say is that Steve Vai is a master of his craft. Watch the way he walks around the stage in the beginning "listening" and calling out precise decible and frequency adjustments to the monitor mix sound man on the side of the stage. A delight to see... and hear!

I admire the the stage discipline showed by the other musicians. This is called professionalism
Yes sir. Master class! Cheers!
Yes, trying this in a band with your mates and they just dick about and you get nowhere lol
@@Jamesfoofighter if that’s happening… You’re in the wrong band. 😎
Why would they lack discipline? They are all paid professionals and Vai is the boss.
If you dont adhere to sensei you will be fired. He demands professionalism period.
I've been to a million sound checks and never once seen the lead guy have such exacting details as to what he wanted up or down to the exact freq and db. Vai's a pure genius, end of story.
I agree.
That’s what happens with over exposer to frank zappa ;)
@@daneph I don’t know if there such a thing as “over exposure“ to Frank Zappa. But Steve sure did learn a lot from him.
It's called they know to do what he says or get fired without hesitation. Even though his Guitar hiss's the worst I've ever seen.
@@Ace96x10 you can see guitar hiss? 😳
The dude with Vai's cable is like the bridesmaid following every move of the bride fixing her dress. I love it!
That’s hilarious! Now I can never “unsee“ that. That’s Steve‘s new guitar tech, replacing Thomas. Yes, he’s quite attentive.
He sure earns his money, but he obviously loves his job. Watch the rig rundown with him.
That's one of his sons that's doing the tech work ❤
I hope when I grow up I can call out specific frequencies and the correct number of dB that they need to come up or down in a live mix like Steve Vai.
Floyd, thank you for posting this. Is just another example of how GOOD Steve is as a master musician.
Yes, I agree. And, you’re welcome. I don’t know if that kind of thing is something that you learn, or if it’s just an innate built-in talent and ability that some people have. Kind a like when you see someone with perfect pitch. I have gone through exercises where I used a tone generator to sweep through frequencies to get familiar with what they sound like. Also, when I’m mixing music I will often sweep frequencies in the equalizer to get familiar with how they affect the sound spectrum. Cheers to you!
Why u need to call our that?
You can train yourself. There's a programe called golden ears I used years ago... I got pretty good... but you have to keep it up.
I've known this guy over 50 years. Time really takes a toll, on the rock guitarist.
Time takes a toll on us all. Cheers!
But not the rest of us. Fountain of youth user here!!
Sometimes I miss live sound experience like that. Almost everywhere is silent stage and direct, which I've learned to love as well because of the control I have in the mix levels. But nothing beats that live sound amp cabs moving air.
Yes, I agree. Music is movement. Music is vibration. Nothing like that SPL coming out of a cabinet hitting your guitar at a resonant frequency and bringing you into the vibration.
This is amazing to watch and hear. Thanks for posting.
I agree! I was thrilled to be there and be able to film this. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
Thanks so much for this. The insight is priceless. It’s so cool to see how everyone knows “where to be”. That venue is so intimate, and I bet it’s not an easy mix to get. Bouncy house if you’re not careful. I’d bet Stevie’s being extra attentive because of the space.
This was a wonderful experience for all! Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers!
I saw Vai a few years ago with Nuno, Tosin Abasi, Zakk Wylde and Yngwie. His tone was a thing of beauty
Quite often when he jams with others his sound is thin by comparison.

I don't think many guitar heros would tell the engineer which db and which k to boost exactly like Vai does. He is so percise with his golden ears.

Oh come on man you're holding up the show. This should have been done before everyone else got on the stage!
This isn’t the show, this is a sound check… Which is kind of like a special show and itself. You have no idea of the last minute coincidences that brought this moment together. Everyone enjoyed it, including Steve. Cheers!
I’ve seen 1 other person with such perfection. Mr. Frank Zappa
Frank was a huge influence on Steve. He talks of that often.
Pure Genious

Love how Steve conveys exactly what he needs. I think he’s done this before. 😂
Ha ha! Right! Cheers!
very cool
I agree! Cheers!
what Steve hears in his head and how it transfers signals to his playing is a gift imo that only a very few master guitarist have.
there was a bad cable somewhere in the video/audio feed. crackling sound but only while lead guitar was playing. at the end i heard a fizy line pop when steve stepped on his pitch shift switch...i dont know if that was related but it was mostly audible when the board level was faded back to only FOH or V/A feed. very smart eq'ing. im pretty sure frank did this and i know Prince does it.
I don’t think Steve would be using a bad cable. Mostly, if not all that noise is coming from the little camera microphone I was using being overloaded by the high sound pressure level from the stage.
@@floydwebtube no i doubt it was anything in steves rig. it was related to the A/V loop. Something in the gain structure of the audio video loop. I could only hear it when the board feed was cut and we were only hearing the audio coming from the video production link. i dont think it was anything to do with an onboard camera mic. those things are usually bypassed in normal circumstances. i did hear a pop when steve stepped on his pedal tho.
@@JulietsMan there was no “A/V Loop“. All of the audio in this video was directly from the tiny microphone inside the camera I was holding. And all of the noise in this video, was a product of overloading that little microphone.

Steve has supersonic ears to distinguish how much volume is needed for different frequencies.
Listening is an art in itself. Even in conversation. Most people “listen“ to respond, rather than listening to understand.
Nice❤
Very nice! Cheers! ❤️
Listen to that hiss!!!
I was surprised by that too, as I had mentioned in another comment. Truth is, there has never been a guitar rig, or amp set up in my entire life where I did not have hiss. Especially if you’re running a high gain rig. Steve does not use a noise gate, because they degrade the signal. He does use a volume pedal at the end of his signal chain and he can shut that hiss off when he’s not playing. I think he leaves it open during sound check to get an idea of the noise floor.
Did you see how he changed the location of the microphones in front of his cabinets? he slightly offset them from the cone center, which is the proper way to do it.
Yes, and his new guitar tech came out as did the monitor mix engineer, and Steve explained to both of them why and how he moved those mics. And if you watch right after that, the monitor mix engineer stands right behind Steve to get a good reference as to what Steve is hearing. That’s A good sound man right there.
What's that dude checking out towards the end
I don’t know… Can you explain further?
Phil Bynoe bassist extraordinaire
Yes he is! And a super nice guy. I met him on the street, and got him to sign my Ibanez Jem.
perfect.wonderful.....
Yes sir!
What's the song from soundcheck? Just a jam or something he's put out?
It’s just a jam. Steve’s son Julian, told me he wanted me to record it because it’s something they’ve been playing around with. Maybe it’ll show up on an album someday.
Steve is using Fractal for his sound here i suppose and may be the power amp is connected his backline speakers
I believe you are correct on that.

I don’t know what you wrote, but cheers to you!
00:44 Can we get a little bit more hiss please?
That’s what happens when you have all that gain. But you don’t hear it when he’s playing. And he has a volume pedal that he muted the hiss with at times. I never had a guitar rig or guitar set up in my life that didn’t have hiss. Nature of the beast… especially when you’re a beast! 😁
What happened to the sound at 6:12?
As I described in the description, the little microphone on the camera I was using just got overloaded from the sound pressure level on stage. It really fell apart when the bass kicked in.
Bats should sign up for a listening workshop with Stevie

Is the monitor engineer here Steve's touring monitor engineer or is it the venue's house engineer?
Part of Steve’s crew.

The poor guy tugging on the cable is tired of it I'm sure. He is like, dude, learn to step over your own cord.
I think he’s probably thrilled to do that. He’s Steve’s new guitar tech, replacing Thomas. He actually was able to come out on stage and play guitar with Steve for one of the songs. I may post the video of that.
Can someone give the camera man a kick
There was no cameraman. It was on a tripod.
I’m amazed at his noise, but maybe with all Vai’s volume swells it would screw him up???
I’m not quite sure what you’re talking about. Are you talking about the “hiss“ when he’s not playing his guitar?
I'm not sure that this was his first time at this.
Yeah, not his first rodeo.
genius ..
Definitely.
Add 2 decibels on the 1k frequency, remove 1 decibel from the 5k one..... the sound engineer becomes a simple task executioner..... lol...
I’m sure the sound engineer loves his job! Cheers!
As good as the show
Yes, I agree. Much more personal.
Why doesn't he go wire less, must be better than tripping over leads
I’ve seen him mention in several interviews that he doesn’t like going wireless because of the loss in signal quality. His leads are custom-made by Larry DiMarzio, and with a wireless system you get radio frequency interference and some degradation of signal quality.

CAN DOT HEAR DRUMS OR SYMBALS TERRIBLE MIX
I explain the reason for that in the comments. It’s because the tiny microphone on the camera that I used got overloaded by the sound pressure level of the stage volume, especially when the bass and the drums kicked in. Get it?
He and Jeff Beck...two of the most overrated guitarists ever.
I don’t understand how you can quote over rate“ the talent or the caliber of either of those guys. But, that’s the beauty of music, it’s totally subjective. Curious… Who would you consider a “GOAT”, or “under rated “guitarists? I’ve always considered Michael Hedges to be probably one of the best acoustic players I’ve ever known in my lifetime. Then, I see some kids on RUclips that are like doing and human stuff on guitar! Gotta love the genre!
Don't like him, that's all...
We all have our own taste and get to make choices. Curious… Then why did you come here?
For decades every Steve Vai riff and tone has sounded exactly the same as the last. His playing is lazy and tired. He needs to try something TOTALLY different.
Obviously, you are not listening. You are not “hearing“.
@@floydwebtube I have listened Floyd. His stuff just sounds homogenous, his style is too pigeon-holed. Compare him to Jeff Beck or Danny Gatton, who played a variety of styles, and you hear their hands on the strings. Vai's sound is always over-produced, too many digital effects stacked up. No Floyd, I "listen" very closely.
