- I Made A GameBoy Game!
The GameBoy is one of the most iconic handhelds of all time, and is quite literally a symbol of pop culture. It's impact on both the gaming industry and on tons of childhoods is massive, so to pay homage to this legendary set of consoles, I decided to make a game for it! Specifically, I'll be "remastering" an old university project into a GameBoy game. In this video, I'll show you how I created a custom GameBoy game using GB Studio.

The bubble tea theme is so creative. I feel that I've learned quite a bit about game development from you.
Wonderfully done! This video is a great primer for making Games in GB Studio, so thanks for putting in the effort to make it. I know it's too late, but did you know you can shift-click to draw lines for collisions and paint in the Game World? Much easier than clicking and dragging long segments.
Thank you! 😄 Also did not know that for drawing lines, It's a feature I use in other art programs, so it's great to know this exists in GB Studio as well!
Amazing to see it actually on the hardware. I imagine it's quite a surreal experience when you've played game boy a lot.
I had (still do actually) a game boy advance and there were so many great games. It's cool to see people still nostalgic for the style.
Some ppl just make a game in the STYLE of a game boy game and call it "a real game boy game", but you actually put in the effort to make it playable on a real Game Boy!!! Props to you!
I'd love to see more of this game. it reminds me of the mobile game, GameGuy! Seeing this make me wanna remake this game in 3d for game builder garage for the switch and even try making a game of my own with GB studio!
You are a big inspiration and The biggest reason why I started my own RUclips channel:)
I completed your game, and I like it! Also I saw that there is no pause feature, but overall, the game looks awesome!
That game was AWESOME! Its super impressive to see how You managed to make a game for a game boy color! (Even tho I Only played it Only on my phone!) Can't wait to see more!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :D
This is so good. Retro consoles are the best for me and you made a game for the GameBoy? This is too epic
This reminds of that one timeI found a gameBoy with a Mario game in it, witch I found while cleaning up some old stuff that used to be my parents stuff. And then a few days later I got a Barbie game to play on it. And also I got that dinosaur game called bubbles or sm like that. And the duck game or sm like that. The ✨ nostalgia✨
I think it'd be really cool if you made a GBA version/remaster. It'd be awesome to see what you'd do with the upgraded hardware!
Really cool, dude. Nice game.
hey! I downloaded your game and played it completely on the emulator on my 2ds xl! the game is wonderful, I liked that the first level brought my jumping skills to perfection, and I was able to pass the next ones easier :D I also noticed a bug that you can kill an enemy after death if you keep clicking B, but I think this is not a big problem :D
Feedback for future updates:
1. The pipes look like the player could collide/climb them. This might be because they're attached to the walls. I would change the graphics so that the pipes don't look like climbable objects.
2. The screen shake when you hit the enemy isn't a good idea: the game basically punishes player with less intelligible view to the game area each time you get rid of an enemy. The screen shake should be used in some other way.
RUclips Recommended, you’ve done it again, you gave me a gem of a video.
Let's all praise the GB Studio devs :D
Massive w on that one cuz game development is hard sometimes
Scratch:
@@NaraSherko ignoring other easy platforms.
@@Woodman3Depending on the type of game you are making, it can take a lot of scripts and sprites.
That’s genuinely awesome now I wanna use that website since I got no experience tho
Jett you’ve got mad skills
thats cool, i also made a game with GB Studio, its called Genesis of Dreams!
A huge challenge will be to recreate the Donkey Kong Country trilogy for Game Boy (or Game Boy Color), in the style of the Donkey Kong Land trilogy - and maybe vice versa as well.
This is amazing. Could you make one of those gadgets you get on windows? Like that clock
Put this in a widget? That's a great idea. I'm surprised there aren't that many.
@@JACKHARRINGTON No, I meant on windows
I think you can search for it, but adding this game as a Windows gadget would also be nice :)
@@foakjljrwajkltawtrawtwa441 Iirc gadgets/widgets started and ended on Vista. They also had them on macos until relatively recently (2018/2019), but yea, no one uses them. Which is really weird, widgets are a cool thing.

M&L best rpgs hands down, gotta rep them 👌
great job !
Yo, js wondering if u can make a gameboy fighting game too, cuz u know
I love retro game❤
bro is going to end up making a video game in ms paint 💀
Just because he can make a GB game????? W H A T
@@TheonlyofficialSplashgorhe made flappy bird in Microsoft excel
@@natetag but still how paint??
@@TheonlyofficialSplashgor he's just exaggerating for the sake of a joke. He doesn't actually believe that
@@natetag I'm just saying lol
Nice 😊
Whoa how do you make the screen shake that’s so cool!!
Thanks! I made the screen shake using Gb studios built in camera feature. It allows for hoirzontal or vertical shaking and you can adjust the amount as well! :)
@@JettLee bro your game is super cool and so was showing how you did it very much appreciate the reply as I learned a lot here!! 🙏
@@wyattalexander4041 Much appreciated! :)
im gonna play this on my homebrewed 3ds
Wow it controls a lot floatier than it looks.
finally someone who actually made a gameboy game instead of a game with the gameboy palette
Much appreciated! I've seen other more recent videos that attempt "gameboy games" where they just use a palette and modern game engine, and it frustrates me lol. If you're gonna do it, do it properly, and i'm glad you enjoyed this one! :)
Similarly, I once saw a Game Boy-styled Mega Man fangame that uses Symfonikev’s Mega Man music which doesn’t fit the style of Game Boy, so it definitely felt a bit off
@@CrustyFox87 yeah like no shade to anyone doing these styled games, but id appreciate if they actually stuck to the limitations lol
We need a sequel
I guess I'm not the only one who made a game for that system
You can make Gameboy music in gb studio
I see a lot of GB Homebrew Games totay.
Amazing!

You should make boba boxer 2:the work shouldmake it
I think I will download the ROM to play it on retropie.😊
Awesome game! Now make one for the NES
Honestly might look into this, even just old consoles in general, it's VERY fun
@@JettLee The harder games tend to be more fun then the easier games in my opinion
@@sabrinanevitt9166 Yeah I find in general more challenging things to be fun, and WAY more satisfying to actually complete / figure out
@@JettLee Yeah, im still stuck on world 8-2 in smb and im still having more fun on that then on odyssey

Imagine recreating modern games on the gameboy
How did you flash the cartdrige ? Can you buy original looking modern cartdriges that you can flash ?
Heya! So i actually used a flashcart here with a Microsd card that you can chuck roms onto.
You CAN however flash your own roms onto cartridges, i think theres people who sell both gameboy boards, and cartridge shells. Then using something like a GBXCart RW, you can make your own cartridges. Hope this helps!
how do you put the game on a cartridge to play on your gameboy though?
You should do a break menu
guys use the engine he uses, do not use C. It will drive you crazy.
you forgot to make a boss fight before the end
I've got a caricature and name lol early days but hopefully waboo is a good name and my caricature is ok lol kind of looks like a digolet from Pokemon 😂😂😂😂
How long did it take from start to finish??
Hey do you have any idea on how to put it in a real cartridge im making a surprise for some one and i whant to give them the game in a real cartridge
game boy colour 9:30 lol
What was the original video u showed at the start of the video?
nintendo after seeing this: *see you in court*
How did you get it to run on the gameboy, line what kind of cartridge did you use
It's the power of a flash cart. Put an SD/Micro SD card with some games in it (maybe a GB/GBC emulator to play GB/GBC games on it) and voila.
what program do you use for pixel art?
it's aseprite
he mentions it, although it kinda doesnt look like aseprite, my first impression of the video had me saying "thats asperite"
@@ampixxy what comes after a B what sounds like B C what has a C in the name Minecraft, MC MC Squa-
@@xaviidk what?
How did you manage to export your game on a GBA cartridge?
They probably rendered the game, put it on their GBBA flash cart and used a GB/GBC emulator to play this game on it.
where did you get the flash gb card
How did you get a cartridge for the game?
please add an extended camera, I cant even play without getting hit
Looks good. But you didn't learn assembly to make it. To make a gameboy game from scratch you must first invent the universe.
There's an foldable gba
Could I make a gba game with this engine? (update, thats not possible)
How did you out it on cartridge?
wait how did you make a phyisical copy of your game?
he used a rom file and i think some sort of usb flash drive rom thing to import it into the game boy, he didnt make its own cartridge i thinik
Probably just a flash cart like the amazing everdrive
I played the game he made on my phone using emulator
what is the music name that used in the game ?
The main song in game is called "Twilight Drive", made by a user that goes by Krümel (crumb)#0723. If you do a bit of searching online, you can see their other songs as well
@@JettLee thanks
take a shot every time he says "gb studio"
lmao, just checked the script and it's in there 16 times hahaha
@@JettLee HOLY FUCK YOU ACTUALY REPLIED
@@Dancingmasking LOL I tend to try and read comments on most of my videos, plus yours made me chuckle soooo
@@JettLee cool
how do you get the game to run on it?
I think I mentioned it in the video, but I have a gameboy flashcart. I was able to put the rom on it, and just load it up normally :)

How do you make a game boy game
Make a game called “game boy” on the game boy where you are a boy that plays games on a game boy but the boy’s mom took the game boy away from the boy so the boy has to do all sorts of things to play his favorite game on the game boy, “game boy”, the game you are playing is his favorite game.
Nice
