Back before Flash died, Nitrome had a few tiny games that could be played right in their thumbnail on the home screen. I love the similar minimalist vibe, it forces developers to focus on good gameplay mechanics
It sure was a fun challenge
Nitrome is still alive iirc! They ported a lot of their games to HTML5, so Flash's death didn't stop them.
Also I have an archived version of flash that fully works
@@GriffinForte i have like 20 (Flashpoint for like 15 or something, flash10win from Anti Idle's download, Flash Player 30 from Red Ball speedrun leaderboards)
NITROME MENTION
I loved the icon games so much
i miss website nitrome a lot
Now make it run on a bunch of LEDs
Nw I really want to try that
make a controller out of bananas

"oh wow yay." Is so relatable after smashing your head against a wall for a while haha.
I swear the bug being caused by the controller is the type of thing to me all the time.
It's the worst, but at least it's easy to fix haha
Bro i litterally thought you had 300k+ subs bruh, I keep getting recommended all of this small game creators and I always try to give them love. Dont give up keep doing what you love!!!!
Thanks, I appreciate the support!
when i read this i didnt expect it to be as low as 330 💀 bro is so underrated
@@socialfox8061doubles in 3 days
HE DOESN'T!? what
is there a joke about "record players"? or does it mean something? I just don't understand
If you think about it, Simon can be considered a game with 4 very large pixels...
The RUclips algorithm identified it as Minecraft 💀
Someone should make a game where you start with a small screen size like 3x3 and you explore the map and unlock upgrades to increase the screen size so you can see more and explore more
Not a bad idea!
Very underrated! Hope this gets some more recognition sometime soon.
hard agree
For 9x9 it has alot of gameplay, good job!
I watch a ton of devlog videos because i find them interesting. This one was just as good as other super popular ones, then i saw you had less than 400 subs, keep up the good work and content! You're really good at this!
I tried out the game and it was pretty good, I hope you get more popular because your channel shows a lot of promise so far. Keep up the good work!
This is such a fun idea! I feel like if you just made the player and enemies brighter green and brighter red, outside the pallet your using, it would help visually clarify what’s going on
Not wrong, and I should have added tilemaps for different colour blindness types
But I probably won't support the game as it was more a challenge than something people would want to play
@@_inDevelopmentThen you can just make your next challenge updating the game for a bit :P.
Nuh uh
That was such a cool and highly interesting video, loved every second of it! The game looks like a really cool concept!
Also loved the way you presented everything haha
Dude your content is so underrated!!!!!!!!! i really love the final game ^^
Really creative idea! I love it.
This looks fun! Even with how simple it is it looks like a cute little game to pass the time, i wish i could play but for some reason it wont let me (probably my device) keep it up, this looks awsome!
Great video. this was really cool to watch. I'm 100% subscribing!
Pretty neat idea and execution. For world generation i would recommend looking into simplex noise - or in this case maybe even the wave function collapse algorithm, what is basically what you did but a little bit more advanced. 😊
I have played around with perlin noise, but otherwise this sounds too complex for my brain 😅
@@_inDevelopment It sounds complex, but it is pretty neat. It is basically the same you did, but with multiple layers. You can create a 2D layer of scalable and repeatable valueus which abilibility of creating seas and villages is tunable. You have to look at it as a continous value - if a is bigger than 0 it is deep ocean, if it is bigger than 0.1 it is beach, if it is bigger than 0.2 it might be grass, there are multiple layers to play with.
Wave function collapse on the other side gives you more controll on what you want on the othe side. It is basically what you did, but with some sort of array of what you did on the other side. I would recommend researching that topic.
Congrats on almost hitting 500k subscribers! Oh wait... I mean 500. Bro you're too underrated!
Adhesive wombat nightshade is the perfect music for anything.
YOU ONLY HAVE LIKE 400 SUBS?? You need at LEAST 100k man, this was a really well made video! Also, very interesting concept, and you pulled it off nicely!
YONKAGOR
@@user-ju9bz2sv6j yes he is really good
i remember for a school project i made a 8x8 terminal game, a modified version of sokoban
I just realized you only have 1k subs bruh I thought you had like 100k, video was fire🔥
This is really neat!
Honestly amazing. Personally i never understood the gaming obsession of "bigger number is better"
why does youtube think that this is minecraft?
Wow! Impressive grind
incredible video! subbed :)
such a cool idea!
youtube recommended me this video, It is great, congrats, I'm subbing!
I appreciate it thank you
Very underrated! Gl
you should use noise for procedural generation since it is parallelizable, allowing you to extend it infinitely and generate tiles out of order
you jumpscared me, the voice volume was so low i increased my volume and then i literally heard a really loud "POOF" Lol
Good video bro! Keep it up!
Hmm.... This is the only video of yours ive watched but ive determined you are underrated! I'd really like to make my own indie games someday, ive never done real coding (ive tried some weird types of coding, idk how to explain) This game looks fun even though its uder 100 pixels, great job! Keep it up! (New sub! Hope i can learn some things from you!)
Congrats on ur vid blowing up!
Finally, a game i can run
I thought you had way more then 500 subs lol, keep up the good work!
Had less than half that before posting 😎
I’ve always wanted to make a game like this.
you could easily port every single tile based roguelike game with careful engineering
since you have a text window you could have your stats displayed every time you move, literally so do-able
also, do not under any circumstance think im an expert 💀. cool project, looking forward to your next videos
@@msidrusbA you're not wrong, and thanks for the support!
It reminds me of the tiles on an NES or C64, just flat-coloured.
quite cool!
No advanced 3D rendering? Unbelievable.
really underrated, i feel like watching 100k channel video
I appreciate that thank you
that seems to be one of the cases where using a dedicated game engine is probably getting in your way more than rolling your own.
also it might be fun to implement on an rgb dot matrix (either 8x8 or 16x16.) and with a 16x 16 you can actually have numbers pretty easily (minimum readable being 2x4 and no compromise being 3x5 excluding spacing, so 3x5 and 4x6) though an ip in binary or some color code can work too.
minimal input seems like 4 direction and one button, so could actually just use a single joystick.
even on 9x9, you have enough pixels to write "WAVE" and the wave number
and in theory you can even have a "3d" world (i.e. 2.5d like doom/rail shooter) in a 9x9 (with 1x3 characters)
an rpg should also be possible.
something that might be interesting would be making a custom pcb with a blackberry style trackball, an esp32c3 and either a tiny led matrix or a 72x40 0.42 inch screen.
if you have the patienceor money, you could get 0404 rgb leds (1mmx1mm) for the 9x9 and have an even smaller game (if you stack pcbs, you can have a sub 10mm console by placing a very short 5 way joystick on the back.) and using a 400909 battery you can actually get to sub 10mm on each side with a fully autonomous console. Practical? nope. but it should work, and who cares about details like practicality and UX?.
I found the EYSHSNZWZ bluetooth module that has an antenna in a sub 9mm form factor, so it is probably feasible to have a multiplayer portable console in the sub 1cm size format.
This does sound really sick, but unfortunately with a full time job idk if I have the time or patience to figure this out 😅
Wow this is amazing :) so minimalistic and if pp could just pull up this minigame and connect devices to play some matches. Yk we got cellphones today but this is def retro vibes, cool ideas.
@@_inDevelopment I might get a tiny esp32 s3 board +screen and make a sub 20 mm console.
@@_inDevelopment btw I just found esp32-S3-Matrix boards exist, which are an 8x8 rgb matrix with an esp32s3 microcontroller and an accelerometer/gyroscope.
for a small but usable input a psp joystick and some silent microswitches are pretty decent.
no way a coder this good only has 800 subs
mad underrated 🔥
"55 non critical errors I chose to ignore and never fix"
I see you've mastered the true art of programming, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
This inspires me to make Minecraft for Microbit. 5x5 display. 1 colour. I’m stealing your brightness block breaking code and contextual placing reticule.
Sounds sick, go for it!
this is sick!
this actually inspired me to make an old game idea I had in a minimal way
Good to hear 👌
@@_inDevelopment if commenters could heart replies in their comments I would
So how's that game coming along huh
@@_inDevelopment I lost all code progress since I had forgotten to save /:
Ah sorry to hear that mate
The moment the video said "We need to talk about 1440p" i just switched quality to 1440 lol
underated!!
Bro learned the hard way about deadzones on analog input XD
I love how whenever he shows his voice it's just else ifs
👍love it
Welcome to the 700 subs club
love it
crashing while rendering only 100 pixels, thats some high level shieeett xD
It would be cool if you could add in a shied generator when and it becomes like a tower defence kind of game.
I do agree, but the game is complex enough as it is so I probably won't
Thanks for the suggestion though
Ultra retro
Nice video
Can you make level number in binary? 2^81-1 waves sounds super fun :)
It would be cool but I have other projects I need to work on sadly
I can't wait for 128k in the future
ive done this before and its really fun, but easier to do with frameworks than game engines tbh
My only worry was the multiplayer, no idea at all how to do that in a framework
Next vedio idea minecraft less than 20 megabyte
Adhesivewombat music, best channel (aside from mine)
nice, keep it up
Meanwhile me playing SCP:SL at 800x600:
.__.
very cool game
Awesome video) when will u make 9x9 mmorpg? I will buy it
Haha maybe a bit too complex for me I'm afraid, thanks for the support though!
Personally I would just make chess which is 8x8 you could just have colors for each piece. Or like snake with 6x6 but those both make for bad videos so good job on your game.
Chess isn't original
55 noncritical errors you just let sit is honestly such a mood.
is that adhesive wombat on background?!!?! someone still listens to it besides me?
worlds hardest pixel art program
epic
why didnt you use perlin noise for the map generation?
The only thing I could have used perlin for was grass and water, as I want the player to be able to choose how many rocks, how much water etc, which perlin wouldn't let me control to the same extent
@@_inDevelopment i see why you wouldn't want to use it if you could only use it for those 2 things, but you still could control the amount of water; just but decreasing the brightness on the map where water can generate at
very cool, awesome video!
also youTube thinks this is minecraft lol
Ah, yes, my favorite hostile Minecraft mob, the red pixel
are you able to change the size via a command?
I've left it so that if you resize the window you can see more, but otherwise you can't change the camera zoom
If you wanted you could just download the project and resize the camera yourself 👍
Coding is fun don't apologize for being impressed. It's always awesome when you make something that works as intended, feels powerful
For sure, especially when you know how complex everything going on in your computer is
night shade :0
I can see a potential “creative mode” for building with the traps and walls.
In hindsight that is a good idea but I don't intend to support the game further, have other projects to work on 👍
Epik :3 you get sub
Now make thisrun on a refridgerator
Ahh yes, GODOUGH
Can you make a new mecanic that when a mob breacks a block makes a new block
Unfortunately I didn't intend to support this game further, but not a bad idea
Ultrakill 30p setting
You can play chess on an 8x8, with different pieces being different colours
You're completely right, and I know I didn't specify this, but I wanted to make an original game
still higher quality then nintendo switch screen
Don't worry about not knowing how to implement multiplayer. Just remember: Even the people in networking say that the internet runs on magic. The first rule of networking is that you don't know shit about networking.
Very true lmao thank you
Agreed 💀
Have you really built "building" text by hand?
Nah, just editing
the whoosh sound effect is so loud
Noted 👍
What sound creator is that?
SFXR
tetris can be done in 10x20 and imo tetris is very fun
true, that is over double the pixels though and not original
how did you learn gdscript?
I started with visual scripting in unreal engine to understand how coding generally works then transitioned over with the help of chatgpt (though it is quite unreliable) and the official documentation
@@_inDevelopment Do you know about the official (or i think fanmade?) gdscript learning (from 0 coding knowledge) website? It goes by step by step and gives you some tasks aswell
alright so here are my thoughts going into this, why not make a game with just one pixel, the output being morse code like those text only adventure game!
But if we were to go that far I mean why does the output have to be a single pixel? why not have 0 pixels audio only morse code text style adventure game!
also if you were to use morse code for both input and output since it could be very low bandwidth you could put that game on a lot of different things how about that?
That would be sick, it's a great idea, but I'm pretty burned out with this concept 😅
I might steal that game concept but make it using ascii art and no game engines just advance shell code.
Dwarf Fortress? /j
Go for it, honestly a better idea than pixels tbh
@@HalfAsleepSam Yeah but actually No, Dwarf fortress is very much it's own very complex thing. It took almost 40 years to develop if I am not mistaken, I don't plan to compete with that.
Today, I completed the map generation, color customization, player movement, collision detection, and save system. I began working on the enemy mechanics but decided to take a break as I was feeling fatigued. I'll pick up where I left off later.
Implementing multiplayer functionality will be challenging as usual, but I've already devised a solid plan for how it will work, primarily using "netcat."
Hey, still working on it? Keen to see how it's going as I missed this message earlier
i find it a bit counter intuitive that the max resolution of this video is in 4k.
wouldn't be very fun to watch if it was also 9 by 9 lol
not realy pixels but idc cuz its a good vid
