    • @uncircumcisedheart
      @uncircumcisedheart Год назад +14

      I agree. I am going to tell you that there is a plethora of antisemitism in muslim literature that precedes the creation of Israel and Muslim hatred for Jews rarely has anything to do with Israel.
      The main problem is the lack of understanding between people of different backgrounds and it emerges from dogmatism inherent in their thinking thanks to clergy.
      I am a Muslim and I completely support the right of Israel to exist and prosper. I have read the classics of Zionism and nowhere does it prescribe apartheid. The problem is with the policies of Israel, and we should always criticize it with a sense of objectivity and without being hypocritical. What do I mean by that? I can't criticize Israel if I don't condemn the atrocities committed by MY people.

      So, semantic was originally a reference to a language group. Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic are all Semitic languages. But later it came to refer to ethnic groups that speak it. The thing is, though, it arose in Europe at a time when there were a lot of Jews both very few Arabs there. So the term came to refer to the persecution of Jews, and the name stuck.

    • @milascave2
      @milascave2 6 лет назад +5

      critic: So, genetic testing shows that most Jews have about 12 percent "Semitic blood. So genetically they are not pure Semites. The thing is, though, neither are many Arabs. The middle east is on the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Lots of mixed blood. There are A LOT of blue-eyed Arabs. Really, issues of racial purity are mostly of interest to racists. There are cultural groups. Jews is one, Arabs is another, and yes, there is overlap, and there are Jewish Arabs.

    • @syourke3
      @syourke3 6 лет назад +10

      Helly Alatouli No, Antisemitism means hatred of Jews, it does not mean hatred of all those who speak a Semitic language, e.g., Arabs. The term developed in Europe when the only semites in Europe were Jews, when Semite was synonymous with Jew. You have to understand the historical context of Antisemitism in order to understand its meaning. Hatred of Jews was very widespread among European Christians for many centuries and the term was invented to describe this hatred of Jews.

    Israel's crime in Gaza and the insane occupation of Palestine for 70 years have put human conscience and honor to the test. So much right and wrong are standing in this disaster. There is no rational or customary reason and argument in choosing the false line, in which all the evil people of the world are present. The false choice is nothing but contempt for human beings, honor, pride and dignity of humanity. Undoubtedly, Gaza is Karbala and the field is the field of choice between dignity or humiliation. Honor or meanness and finally angel or devil Regarding the issue of Gaza, I realized that the choice is not difficult because of the clarity of the truth, but very simple. Undoubtedly, I take the side of the truth and avoid everything that threatens my humanity.

    Semite, person speaking one of a group of related languages, presumably derived from a common language, Semitic (see Semitic languages). The term came to include Arabs, Akkadians, Canaanites, some Ethiopians, and Aramaean tribes including Hebrews. Mesopotamia, the western coast of the Mediterranean, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Horn of Africa have all been proposed as possible sites for the prehistoric origins of Semitic-speaking peoples, but no location has been definitively established.By 2500 BCE Semitic-speaking peoples had become widely dispersed throughout western Asia. In Phoenicia they became seafarers. In Mesopotamia they blended with the civilization of Sumer. The Hebrews settled with other Semitic-speaking peoples in Palestine.

      In my opinion, in order to “reach truth” or more precisely to reach the most rational conclusion, the ideal is to have as much critical thinking as possible. That means to read and to be exposed to as many different opinions and perspectives as possible and even making up imaginary ideas/ thought experiments. That being said, in all forms of education systems, there is a limit of time and brain power you can put, so when this happens you can obviously tell that the system will apply what it thinks is more important to give the students. And by “important” I mean not only in a matter of pure knowledge, but in the matter of “the right values/ethics”.
      I guess that where you live, the system agrees that the holocaust was a bad thing and thus learning about the victims of it is more urgent and morally right than explaining the rationals of the nazi /hitlers ideology.
      I believe that in the USA you can study more in depth about the nazi ideology and Main Kampf in higher education institutes.
      I can tell you that in Israel, we learned about the nazi ideas and rationals behind it in more depth. It’s quite interesting.
      And about banning Main Kamph? It’s a good debate. I can see why banning a book or discussing/debating an idea can cause a sense of oppression and a need to resist it. I need to think about it more, because I don’t have good enough arguments to establish a solid enough opinion. Although I believe you can access the book on the internet.
      Edit: when I said “the system agrees that the holocaust was a bad thing and thus learning about the victims of it is more urgent and morally right than explaining the rationals of the nazi /hitlers ideology” I need to add that learning about the rational behind the ideology that was responsible for the crime can be a good tool too to send a moral message too, by making the students aware of how can a person reach a point where they think destroying a whole civilization is right. So maybe it still have a place in the syllabus. Idk, I guess again that it all depends and that exposing students to the horror stories and to death/suffering is more efficient and impactful in making them know how bad that was.
      Edit 2: pay attention that in my comment I assumed that the holocaust was wrong/unjustified, I involved my opinion. in a deeper discussion, everything can be questioned, and that too. But then you have no choice but to enter the field of philosophy-ethics and maybe religion.

I do think though that the more problematic form of antisemitism is the one that aims for the genetics/blood of the Jew, in such no matter how or where they were born. And no matter what is their beliefs or values- liberal/ progressive/ secular/atheist/muslim/anarchist etc, the jewiness is still in them from birth and thus it’s bad.

    The average zionist today, in 2023, does not believe as Abba Eban wrote though, so i think bringing up an article written half a century ago to answer the question is a bit disingenuous. Most zionists bar a fringe, do not believe that criticism against the policies of the State of Israel in itself is antisemitic. There is a significant difference between criticizing the military occupation, and saying Israel should be dismantled and cease to exist as the Jewish State. If anyone called for the entire MENA to be stripped of its nationalist Islamic nature, they woule instantly be considered Islamaphobic. But the real crux of the antizionism equals antisemitsm stance is that 1) antizionism, by and large, denies Jewish indigeneity to Israel, which is, aside from being antisemitic at its core, is also anti scientific, and 2) the use of double standards when it comes to Israel vs every other country in conversations of policy and international law, something which any unbiased onlooker of the UN and its subsidiaries, should be able to unequivocally agree is real.

    Let's take 3 definitions of Zionism:
    1. Oxford:
    ''A movement for (originally) the re-establishment and (now) the development and protection of a Jewish nation in what is now Israel.''
    2. Merriam Webster:
    ''An international movement originally for the establishment of a Jewish national or religious community in Palestine and later for the support of modern Israel''.
    3. Brittanica:
    ''A Jewish nationalist movement that has had as its goal the creation and support of a Jewish national state in Palestine, the ancient homeland of the Jews''
    Chomsky talks about ''criticism of the criminal actions of a state'' without explaining what he means by that.
    Killing Palestinians?
    Raids in the West-Bank?
    Unequal rights?
    I don't see any reason why somebody can't be a Zionist and still be against these kind of things.
    One can be an French nationalist and still be critical of many French government policies. For example: supporting child labor by allowing imports of brands like Nike and Adidas. Does that criticism make someone anti-France?
    It totally doesn't make sense. Chomsky pretends it's plain and simple through his intellectual tone and demeanor but his answer is just blurry and vague.
    I'm very critical of many Israeli government's policies. Does it mean I'm against the idea that Israel should have the right to exist?
    I'd say: being anti-Zionist is being antisemitic, being critical of the criminal actions of Israel is not.
    To all the people blindly praising Chomsky for his greatness, genius and non-human intellect: just pay attention to what he's actually saying.
    In the case of this particular video, nothing noteworthy.
