This is not something I had ever planned on doing, and I don't plan on making a habit of this. However, I do want to do everything I can to make The Fanbase happy. So, here it is, Pearl Jam's song entitled "Black"....the sequel. In the infamous words of Shao Khan from Mortal Kombat...."Round Two, FIGHT!!!"

Thank you for doing this video. Glad you listened to the studio version first too.
I notice that you never get into lyrics. I understand your explanation. There are some people on RUclips whose reactions are only explanations of their understanding of the lyrics and that drives me nuts.
That said, the quality of PJ lyrics is so consistently head and shoulders better than 95% of what is out there, I feel like ignoring the lyrics entirely misses out on some of the genius. Great lyrics with crap music is no good. If I wanted that, I'd listen to spoken word poetry. But great music with stupid lyrics that seem like they were written by a teen who never grew up also bothers me. That isn't to say that every song needs to be super deep, but I like to see proof of sentience in lyrics. PJ really put it all together which is perhaps the biggest reason why I love em. Now my rant is complete.
Thanks again for this great content.

I'm not really much of a lyric guy....not that I don't care about them, I understand they're important to the depth and meaning of the song. I've had little to no experience with writing lyrics honestly, and I personally don't feel qualified to do any kind of evaluation on lyrics....mainly because I'll probably misinterpret 98% of what I hear and read. I'm great with theory, I'm great with chord progressions, I'm great with melodies, countermelodies, and harmonies, I'm great with subdivisions and syncopations. Lyrics....definitely my weakest area, I can't even say area of expertise because I knoooooow I'm no expert in that field.

@@THEDavidHeretic First, you should do what makes you happy. This is your channel. What you do, you do well.
But I think you are selling yourself short. You don't have to be able to decipher the meaning behind every metaphor in every song to generally get a sense of whether lyrics are good. Some are good because they are catchy. Some are good because the story of the song really sticks with you (Jeremy is an example of this). Some are good because of the depth of emotion they convey about something everyone has been through. Black is the perfect example of this. Had the lyric been ,"I know someday you'll have a great credit score. I know you'll get to board flights early when you take to the sky, but why, why aren't you fiscally responsible now?" then the song would have been far less special. That the real line is relatable and powerful is what makes the song a masterpiece in my opinion.

I laughed and nearly choked on my tea when I read that. You just changed the way I'll be hearing the song (only a wee bit) from here on out, although I definitely agree that the original lyrics are what help make the song so special.

Some cool things about Mike McCready in this video: he’s wearing a Soundgarden shirt and the guitar he’s using, a distressed sunburst strat, is one he’s used over the last 30 years. He was even playing that guitar in the Mad Season video you reacted to recently.

You have to give Eddie some leeway on this as this is only 13 days since he totally lost his voice and they had to cancel night 2 in London. I was at night 1 London and it is one of the best gigs I’ve been to, as the crowd helped Ed through 2 and a half hours. You felt even more part of the show than you usually do at a PJ gig. Also even struggling with his voice, was a much better gig than the Foo Fighters in Manchester that next night.

Lol the do do dos were stuck in Dave Letterman’s head too, leading to an iconic drop in from Eddie.
Glad you gave this song another chance and listened to the studio version. My biggest issue with your review of the Unplugged version was I felt you missed the emotion and we discussed that. I’ve since realised, after watching many more of your reviews that you focus on technical stuff more than emotion and I’m cool with that, I’ve learned a lot from you. So thanks!
If you want to watch a really great version of this song from back in 92 the Madrid version is amazing.

Absolutely on point about this,so much prefer it to the acoustic one,but that's just down to personal preference. But then, that ain't knocking acoustic versions of songs - Take The Warning for example - they are one of the few bands I totally love the acoustic versions of their songs - again,it's down to choice, and possibly one or two beers,I dunno ? But this version of "Black"is tops, and a great call on it man

Like Daniel C said, PJ release practically every show they play as an "Official Bootleg" and have since the 2000 tour -- CD, MP3, FLAC, FLACHD, ALAC, or ALACHD (nowadays) formats, over on their official Ten Club store at shop dot pearl jam dot com (not wanting to put the link here, because, well, advertising...) but just go down to "music -> bootlegs" on the left hand side and you've got a veritable smorgasbord of live show recordings, many shows up to 3 hours long(!) to choose from, for about $10 a piece, straight from the soundboard.
    Can't beat that!

David you know me always honest I was so excited when I got this notification because I thought you were going to redo the MTV Unplugged acoustic version or anything pre 2005 but But when I realized this concert was recent I was flooded with disappointment because Eddie Vedder sounds like total crap again sorry not sorry by the way your breakdown is awesome as always so it's nothing you did wrong I just can't stand the way Pearl Jam sounds nowadays he really needs to do something with his vocal cords
If you just do a simple side by side comparison from the way Eddie sounded in the past to the way he sounds now it is night and day in fact I've seen certain RUclips channels do this and he doesn't even sound remotely close to what he sounded like back in the day to be honest I couldn't even listen to this video
Am I crazy do other people not hear what I'm hearing LOL
Even the way he pronounces his words and vows just sounds weird to me sounds like a billy goat
But either way great job on the breakdown as always but I just cannot stand his voice in 2020 it's like nails on a chalkboard

@@NocturnalNews You aren't crazy. I noticed the change in his range and how he pronounces his words as well, which I'm not crazy about either. I don't think he sounds like a billy goat though. I get that an instrument made of soft tissue will lose its strength as it ages, but the fact that Eddie smokes and drinks has accelerated the process, which isn't ideal. I get it.
My primary reason for requesting this song wasn't even for a redo; it was more about Mike's solo and the crowd, although I thought Eddie carried his notes well enough. Nothing tops the MTV Unplugged version of Black, but that was so damn long ago. The band has grown in other ways that I wouldn't trade. :)

I also went to see them at the Smirnoff Theater-in Dallas Texas and they sounded really bad that night. But anyway the point is even Eddie Vedder said he has a lot of trouble with his vocals because they’ve done thousands of live shows and it has caused a lot of damage to his vocal cords especially in the earlier days when he would just scream some of the lyrics like the song blood for example it’s just straight screaming
