'If I knew where it was, I would take you there, there's much more than this!'.
What a song. And, to me, the hook is in the 'du du du du' they do in the main riff. Maybe it didin't grab you because you were more focused on the tempo and didn't pay full attention to that riff, musically speaking.

Ahh, Breath. Part of the Singles soundtrack, originally from the Gossman demos, an instrumental demo titled "Doobie E" that was Stone, Jeff, Mike, and IIRC, Matt Cameron, just begging for those EdVed vocals, but before Jack Irons handed the tape off to the surfer dude gas station attendant in San Diego. Just be glad that you were given this version instead of the one that came on the Ten Reissue Bonus Content, which was significantly less catchy and less structured.
There's a fun story about Breath with Pearl Jam live shows... back in 1998, fans realized it was a very long time since the band had played Breath live. They loved the song, and it was considered a rarity at that point, and if there's one thing the fanbase loves, it's rarities, so they organized. They printed out signs (and this was the late 90s, so they were kinkos 8.5"x11" photocopied signs) that all said "BREATH!" or somesuch. FINALLY, after 3-4 months of signs, the band relented. on 9/11/98 (which had no meaning back then, obviously) at MSG, Ed said "I've seen religions that were less organized" and they finally launched into Breath after having practiced it for a few tries during soundcheck. It was shaky, but it got the job done, and it's been back in rotation since. There's a similar story with the Leash campaign, too!

Another example of Jeff Ament using what sounds like a fretless bass and a lot of slides, harmonics, and slide harmonics during this era of Pearl Jam. I really love this phase of his.

One of my first experiences with Pearl Jam back in 1992 was this song. It still holds one of the most special places in my heart. If you heard this song as a teenager, and were a giant fan of the band, in the early 90’s, you’d probably love it.

For me, Breath It's one of the best non album pearl jam song yet... Its already stand the test of time for me. Never get bored.
But, I appreciate your opinion, its a matter of personal taste.

This is one of the first songs that Pearl Jam wrote and recorded, and I first heard it on the Singles soundtrack album, after having seen the film at the cinema at the time (a really good movie and a great soundtrack/companion album, it's also kind of a Seattle/early grunge anthology). "Breath" is no.2 on the album. coming right after "Would?" by Alice in Chains, and these two seemed to set up a polarity that would run through the entire album, about despair and anger vs wanting to discover the world. "Would?" captures anger, powerlessness, shame and a sense of being unable to reach out and have comforting relations with other people, the singer seems locked behind a screen of bitter oppression: "so I made a big mistake/ Tried to see it once my way". I used to think that the final line of the song was a desperate; emphatic and sardonic roar: "And - I - would hurt YOU??" - like he is speaking to his girlfriend knowing that he is scaring her away and confirming the notion that she had better be on her guard. (English isn't my first language, though I'm effectively bilingual)
So, after this ode of despair and self-loathing (as I read it at the time). Pearl Jam come in with this song, and the feeling is completely different. This one really feels like a "young man wants to see the wide world and be at home in it" song, I heard the first line as "Born tonight, begin with anything!" - a call of entering into something new, of optimism, Both the lyrics and the anthemic melody with those rich, resounding guitars and drums suggest a sense of joyful expansion, of fighting off the restrictions of a small town or the like. Once again I made a "creative mishearing" of the lines in the chorus - I thought Eddie was singing "Always the door! /- A brave man does that / Always the door /... I know what it's worth / A brave man does that!" as if he were evoking a situation where you have to trust your own strength to step past the door, the red threshold, a point you had been taught to feel intimidated about (much like the recurrent line "Open the Door!" in the film The Last Emperor, this superb film that I had seen a few years earlier.
"If I knew where it was / I would take you there /There's much more than THIS!" caps off the motive of discovering the world. and our common humanity. What a jubilant song!

This was on the soundtrack to the Cameron Crowe movie Singles, and is kind of like a B-side. It's a concert staple at this point, but I agree, it's a nice song, but it's not in my top 10 from them.

    Great song. 8.8.
Personal taste is such an odd thing. In my opinion this song is far more memorable than that terrible Avatar song from yesterday or any of the songs from those soulless Asian girl bands you've reviewed. It's interesting how music can be different things to different people.

Cool song... eddies lyrics & vocals are the real appeal here imo. He really opens up vocally on this one.... which, certainly in this era, was his strength. Jeff really shines here too as you mention. The song is very much a fan favorite as the band (more or less) refused to play it live for a long time. There was a bit of a folklore about it. Fans would bring “breathe” signs to their shows the hopes that the band would play it live. At one of the shows i was at, eddie got a hold of one of the signs, showed it to the crowd, said “alright fuckers”... and they jumped into it. A hell of a moment.
This song was recorded during the sessions for their first album, but they felt it didnt fit on the album... i think thematically, it was too similar to porch, which is certainly a better song. Maybe they felt they had to choose between the two. Idk... just an idea.
    Anyway... well done dh

Time for custom fits monitors. This song deserves the better. I remember the time when I totally screwed up it in a karaoke performance at the Crocodile Club in Seattle
PS1 never heared that bass performance clearly as now with you noticing it.
PS2 it is an actually good score for a song without that didnt catch you. For me, the hook is the riff that Ed vocalizes in his du duru du dururu dururuuuu

I feel like no one will ever recommend it but I'd highly recommend checking out Hunted Down by Soundgarden. If you want a good idea of what their earlier music sounded like it's a great place to start. More punk rock edge to it and it's probably one of my favorite early Soundgarden songs. While you're at it I also HIGHLY recommend listening to Hands All Over. One of my favorite songs in general and definitely one of the best songs in Soundgarden's overall catalogue and a gem from their early days. Very much hope you can listen to the studio versions of these songs as they didn't perform them live very much. Love the content though, man. Hope to see you check these songs out down the line.

This is one of those songs that gets me because it’s E to D which is the 5 and 4 of A, and there is no B in there. There is a C#m and F#m, which would make me think it’s in A, but to muddy the rest of it up, the solo is straight Em pentatonic.

  • @Oldman4128

Yeah, totally agree with you David with regards to the ‘hook’ in the song…. I, however, have great memories about this song, as it was in the film ‘Singles’ which was about the Seattle grunge scene& also which Eddie Vedder appeared in a cameo appearance as a member of the band ‘Citizen Dick’ ….. loved that film & even got the movie soundtrack album, which this song, ofc, was on & the only place I’ve heard it……not the greatest melody though; Pearl Jam have definitely done better, even if it’s a melodic hook like Black (as you said), or a vocal hook, like Alive…. But, songs can be memorable for different reasons & good memories of specific times in your life when you heard them, is definitely one.

    • @gmon78
      @gmon78 3 года назад +4

It wasn't just Eddie that was in the movie. The whole Citizen Dick band was made up of Pearl Jam members, with the exception of the actor Matt Dillon of course.
