Is It Worth It To Visit New Smyrna Beach?

- New Smyrna Beach was another first for me, never been before until this trip. It is a sleepy little beach town that reminds me of Key West once you get near the beach and Cherry Valley IL in the Historic district. Quite an interesting mix if you ask me! But is it worth a visit? That's what we'll be discussing today.

Are you going to move out of Miami?
@@joecoletti7970 I was thinking about it but no, going to be here for a while still
@@MichaelBordenaro ok
One good thing
Florida real estate definitely on the rise
I was reading today a lot of young people moving to Tampa
@@joecoletti7970 yep Tampa is the number one city in Florida right now people are moving to
I was there last weekend, stayed on the beach at an older style motel for 150.00 a night. Flagler Ave. is the touristy area with the restaurants, bars, shops ect...
Definitely!! "The Flagler crawl" u have to do it when u come it's the place to be! 😍
I’m willing to live in a sleepy town in exchange for low crime and safety!
It’s a beautiful small town
There you go! Nothing wrong with that!
The reason it’s so expensive is because it’s where people from Orlando go to get away. They go because there is no nightlife, no hustle and bustle. It’s a great place to go to get out of the city and it’s an hour away.
$300-$400 / night for a hotel there? That’s crazy!! 😳
I know what a rip off!
Exactly
Agree! This video was worth the watch on that finding alone. All in all, not a big fan of cars on the beach. That's another huge useful reveal in this. I know that's where auto racing supposedly started, but I would much rather be on a more virgin terrain. Like Juno Beach from your other video. Thanks.
@@BrisLS1 Thank you! I am telling it like I see it everywhere I go. Hopefully everyone can get a lot of value from my findings 👍
Bed and Breakfast options are better than hotels. The "no drive" beach starts a few miles down from where you filmed. NSB is quaint and private in the sense that the jetty and smyrna dunes park is to the north and Canaveral national seashore is on the south. Visiting here requires a cross over the river, on purpose. It's unfortunate you did not visit the high points. However, perhaps your lukewarm review will prolong the influx of new residents and all the changes that come along with them. I enjoy your channel. Thanks again for the visit.
Looks like a cute little town. I hope to visit eventually. Was funny to hear you mention Cherry Valley. I knew you were from Illinois but didn’t know where. I grew up in Rockford so I know that area well!
Oh wow that is so cool that you know Cherry Valley! I wanted to live there before I moved to FL
It reminds me of sleepy family surfer town San Clemente California
I don’t think I’ve ever been there but if anyone would know it would be you Jonah👌
@@MichaelBordenaro it’s a town on the Pacific Coast between Los Angeles and San Diego a bit isolated but it’s a great family destination to take kids to the beach. There’s a bunch of surfing towns dotted on California coast either south to San Diego or North towards Santa Barbara in Southern California and each one has a different vibe none are really the same or look the same. New Smyrna has consistent small waves from hurricane season thru the end of winter and it’s closest better surfing spot to Saint Augustine since Sebastian is much further away for a day trip since my 2nd job is tour guide weekend nights I can’t do full weekend getaways. Hoping to surf Del Rey beach next year after I get vacation time saved up
@@jonahhex9620 Ahh, thats why I haven't been there. The highway 1 stretch from LA to San Diego I havent driven yet. I hope you get your time off for some surfing when you want, you deserve it!
Astonishing video! :) I loved every second of it! :)
Thank you very much!
$400 a night! LOL I'm pulling $12 a night in my condo, within ear shot of the Kennedy Space Center, rockets be waking my ass up at 3 am.
Yeah a total rip off!
Thanks for sharing.... Yes, it did look a little sleepy.
Quick Zillow check says Real Estate is few and pricey.
Thanks as always!
I'm not surprised
My family goes there almost every summer for 7-10 days and there's plenty to do. But we go for the beach and the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Rent a 2 bedroom/2 bath condo ocean front for approx 200-275 per night. No cars on the beach, that's allowed in a limited area. There's a few very good restaurants, but it's a small town and fewer options. Summertime is prime time in NSB and it does get busy, but it's not obnoxious like Naples, Marco (winter season), and plenty of other locations in Florida (i live in SW Florida). Regarding the sharks. yes they are there and we see them when boogie boarding or just swimming. If you're swimming in Florida waters, there are sharks in the area period. If you need more action perhaps its not the place for you.
I didn't say there wasnt anything to do, I just said what there is to do here, you can do anywhere in FL, so nothing real special about this area. And the fact that half the stores / restaurants are closed at 5 pm, is a non starter for me. But hey, some people might like t hat
Another great and informative tour... Thanks mike
My pleasure!
Mike
You definitely need to give it a second chance
Good place to live
I will next time I'm up that way
Great info. Glad to know that unless you want a super quiet place, there are other areas to continue on to.
Yeah definitely wasn’t the highlight of the trip LOL. Many more places I’ll be talking about that I enjoyed more
Thanks for checking out NSB. It's always been pretty sleepy unless you go out drinking at night. Boating, fishing, and usual activities in any Florida coastal community are also available.
Fantastic video! Added driving on the beach to my list of things to do (: Thanks!
Thanks Kaaren, you definitely should try it sometime!
It’s the gateway to the Northern District of the Canaveral National Seashore which I love…..Apollo Beach.
I always pass New Smyrna on my way to Daytona and have always wondered if I should check it out. This video was helpful, thank you! (Side note: Definitely going to try driving on the beach.)
Yes swing by if you're in the area for a little bit. And definitely try driving on the beach! In Daytona, you can drive for 6 miles down the beach!
@@MichaelBordenaro Will do! Based on those business hours in the area, I'd literally be there a little bit. 😅
@@danishacothiere6074 Yeah I suggest getting there early 😁
Great vid! It is nice to get your account of the different beaches. I am hoping to visit FL within the year and sort of "plotting out" the places I would like to stay. Great to know this location would be best for a short visit vs staying multiple nights!
Yes absolutely, just maybe half or a whole day here and that will do it! Hopefully you'll learn about some cooler places to visit than this through my upcoming vids.Lots more to come still
Try Manasquan NJ its thousands coming in on a sunny day or belmar, Asbury Park NJ.. Used up by 10am!.Point being less is better..
I hear you
Nice place visiting Michael 😉
Yes, New Smyrna is a very expensive little city.
Yes it is!
Nice report. Although the town is small and doesn't have a whole lot to offer, this was still our favorite town we visited in Florida. St. Augustine may have more to offer, but it's very commercialized and touristy. While New Smyrna on the other hand was more friendly and laid back and had a very authentic Floridian vibe. That being said, I'm not so sure if I'd wanna stay there, as all the sites can be visited within an hour, but if you're traveling or staying in the area, it's definitely worth stopping for an hour or two, to visit the ruins and the colorful streets and businesses.
That was my feeling on it as well. It was nice to stop in for a half a day check the area out but I wouldn’t go back to stay there. Really not much drawing me in
@@MichaelBordenaro perhaps you would like Miami or Orlando better
Really like the small town vibes of New Smyna. Beautiful little beach town. But, we like a little nightlife so I don't think we'll be staying there for an overnight trip. Would like to visit during the day, and or course, drive on the beach!
Just a day trip is good enough for sure!
Our night life is very good, to the point the locals get mad.
NSB = Surfing + Off Shore fishing
Wow I was looking into doing a winter rental here. Every video makes It look more alive. I'm really glad I saw this because this would never keep me happy. Everything so quiet and closed early
I would think in the winter, it probably is more lively as most places in FL are with so many snow birds coming down. Those videos that make it look more lively are probably more what its like in the winter. That is just a guess
@@MichaelBordenaro yeah that could be true. I originally wanted to be near a beach but now I'm thinking I should stay closer to Orlando. Still driving distance to the beach if I want to meet up with the sharks in Smyrna 😂
Nobody hangs out on canal st thats the little historical area but over the causeway is where people gather at on Flagler Ave on the beachside I lived here in NSB in the late 90's they have a beautiful boardwalk to the beach. Im a beach lover thats where its at.
Good video. This time of the year new Smyrna is a place of extremes. Quiet during the week and overwhelmed on the weekends. Most of the locals prefer the quiet time during the week! I am surprised the Marriott rate during the week is $400. On weekends yes. I agree it is outrageous.
Don’t mean for that to sound like I’m questioning what are you Said about the price. These days nothing would surprise me!
Yes that price is ridiculous, especially for such an uneventful area. Glad we didn't stay
Not at all!
Very pretty town. My sister lives in Ormond Beach. Not alot going on there either but still very nice area
I think I prefer Ormond over this area myself, but you're right not a lot going on
I had fun seeing NSB because my cousin lives here, loves it, and is always saying l should move here…l have visited a couple of times and l like it.. but I’m more of a Mount Dora person… l did like walking on the beach; that part was fun; l did enjoy the little shops too…nice little town for a visit…
Circumstances can definitely change how you feel about a place no doubt
New Smyrna Beach is the shark bite capitol of Florida because there is a shark breeding area there near the inlet. However, the St. Augustine Beach area has statistically the lowest shark bite incidents in any area of the Florida coast. If you really want to do some body surfing or spend a lot of time in the water, it is better to go to St. Augustine Beach or some other beach on Anastasia Island like Crescent Beach or Butler Beach. My personal favorite beach in Florida is Butler Beach. I will keep my absolute favorite beach in Florida to myself, because I don't want to draw any more attention to that beach. As a body board surfer, I have been surfing Anastasia Island and Matanzas Inlet for over 27 years. Anastasia Island has my favorite beaches in Florida and the crowds at these beaches are not bad except on the biggest holidays of the vacation season. Anastasia Island is home to St. Augustine Beach. I love all of Florida, but my favorite beaches are on Anastasia Island al the way down to Matanzas Inlet.
I'm with you I love the Anastasia Island area beaches too!
Good video; not going to rush over
Definitely don't rush😄
I know what you mean. It's boooooring .....I grew up in a sleepy boring town to busy and exciting....I can't go back.
Yes I know, I like a sort of mix in the middle myself
$400 a night is beach front robbery, that is a crime for just a standard room. Have prices shot up that much. You had a reasonable hotel previously for one night. Smyrna sounds like another place to get some R&R away from the party and tourism crowds. I love the palm trees lining the streets, the small town charm. The fort is a nice plus because I like history. That antique shop was gorgeous and charming. I think that kind of sums up the town. Only boring if you want action, but lovely for peace and tranquility. For action I would be up in Daytona, I'm a race fan. Formula One, Sports Cars, Indy Car, and even some NASCAR. Motorcycles too, Smyrna reminds me of the video you did jointly with the guy from Naples. Naples shuts down early because of the demographics of the residents. That is cool. Each town has a specific character. You choose the town that fits you. Thanks
Yes I agree that price for a hotel in this area is just stupid. And its not for everyone either. I am sure there are plenty of people who would enjoy living in a place like New Smyrna👍
Love this place, ill be there in June
so many places and beaches to do the pullups...
Have only driven through, and some people like a quiet out-of-the way place. No palm trees ot abundant sunshine in Cherry Valley, IL! LOL. It does look pleasant, but VERY quiet! I like a bit more activity and interaction with locals. Cannot believe $300-400/night for a room in New Smyrna. I have been to a Spring Hills Suites before, but way less than that!
That they do have more sunshine here 😄A little too quiet for me as well. I like a good healthy mix of quiet but still some things going on. The hotel prices were a joke.
@@MichaelBordenaro There are some small towns in New England that are similar, but again, SANS the Palm trees! Maybe on a holiday weekend, the quiet is appreciated, but I would find it too dull, and it is not that close to an airport for travel. If it was tucked into the Tampa area or South FL, or even JAX, it might be OK, but not this location. It is a very tidy town - I will give them that!
@@jdhjimbo Exactly, I'm not knocking it, just sayin its not for me, and we agree on that
if youre still around or you wanna come back here check out nsbvacationhomes my dad runs it and you can stay at some rentals he has on the beach
Also feel free to stop by Baracoa. its a local cuban restaurant that i work at
Thanks for the tips and offers! I have been gone for a few weeks now, but I appreciate it!
Dude! LOL 😉 Michael, tell everyone to say it like "new smerna beach" so the locals don't laugh at them👍 also I know u just "popped in" but definitely wrong timing man u have to plan it cuz Canal St, that main strip u were on, has the old car show every month it's a huge 10 block party they block off the traffic u can only walk it. Also the wine walk & Art fest! OH & all the beach bums play some kind of instrument so feel free to join in or not we still love u here 😜 Also to anyone reading we have camp/RV grounds & bungalows here as well in land & is cheaper than staying on the beach that's still 10 mins away on State Rd 44 & also Old Mission Road. I loved it here so much I came to visit 20 yrs ago & never left ❤
I'll probably be the first one to get laughed at since I don't even know how to say it😆I know they have events and things like that here which is great, just being here on a regular day though was a bit depressing, especially when all the shops were closed at 5 pm. But I am glad you enjoy living there! Its nice to hear different perspectives ✌️
@@MichaelBordenaro it's hilarious to me some of the ways I hear tourists pronounce it 🤣 I love the conversations that I have with them. They make this place have a constant flow of moving energy so being a local I just ride the vibe 🤙
Michael
I think you are wrong about this town
It’s quite nice and less tourist
Plus very reasonable
The thing is, if you check this whole series of places I went on my FL road trip there were just other spots that were nicer IMO. So this one was not too impressive compared to others
@@MichaelBordenaro To live there it’s not to bad
Lovely town
Not bad for a day trip
He does not know what he’s talking about I live here and it’s a great town and worth every bit
It sounds like Siesta time.....is it seasonal?
I’m not sure if it’s a seasonal thing or if it’s always like this. It was my first time here
The reason the hotels are that high isnt because theyre trying to rip people off, it’s because thats what people ARE paying.
The whole point, is most people are “tourists” and coming from Orlando (40 mins away) - its one of the only beaches in florida YOU CAN DRIVE/PARK ON (closer/more convenient/less-touristy than Daytona)- so people come with all their chairs and kid toys in the car, drive and park on the beach… and then leave after a fun day. Way more convenient than non-drivable beaches where you have to park on a street and carry a ton of bags with you. You just load up the car and drive off.
If someone has sandy floor mats in their car, they likely went to NSB.
People get used to coming for the day, so they eventually end up staying for a week to treat theirselves (myself included) - hence the hotel prices - it’s where a lot of fond family memories are constantly made.
Nobody is coming for attractions… the attraction is the beach.. as if aliens were seeing it for the first time, thats how central floridians see it when they make it out of the land-locked center… “F the shopping, look at that beach”
IF you would’ve stayed the night, you would’ve felt the buzz of the people lining up their cars on the sand in the AM, and “get it”. But, as you mentioned, you were there later in the PM when everyone drove off - or are in their rooms cooking dinner for the family.
Love New Smyrna Beach.
Careful how you say Smyrna… I know your Illinois accent, I’ve got downstate Cherry Valley accent too but I pronounce smyrna correctly / but I also live in this little town now! 😁
Haha ok, thanks for the heads up 😉

While looking for a more lively place to live... What are your deal breakers? Other than places staying open past 5. Lol (totally agree with that one!)
It does sort of look like that! Honestly just the fact that everything was closed at that time, is the deal breaker for me. I don't do things too early and trying to always do things before 5 pm would be a pain, but maybe great for early birds!
@@MichaelBordenaro I totally understand. Especially by the beach. I think staying open late when you're near the ocean doesn't necessarily mean party seen. I'm not a party girl but I do love talking and hanging out till all hours of the night(or morning lol) if I'm having a good time with friends.

Your completely wrong about New Smyrna. You missed so many things that make this town fun and interesting. We have over a 100 festivals a year, a monthly car shows that pulls in 300 cars down canal st., wine walk every 4th Saturday, craft beer fest every 1st. Saturday. A Christmas parade that's is over an hour and half long. Great restaurants, surfing. Our art community is one of the best. Sorry but you missed the mark on this one.
All these things you mentioned sound like to me you need to be there "at the right place at the right time" that is not the definition of a happening place to me. Also, the footage speaks for itself. I visited plenty of areas in FL more lively than here

Ocala was something along the lines of NSB in the pass, however many companies are relocating to the area. Historic site was built by early Americans not the Spanish. Foundation is from early first seminole war and was occupied during the second Seminole war. Imagine NSB before air conditioning. Orlando (ft gatlin), ft myers, Ft. Lauderdale are literally only there because they were US army bases during the second Seminole war. Miami-dade is named after Captain Dade who died during the Dade massacre, somewhere NW of Orlando. 100 union soldiers were killed by seminole indians.
Shark bite capital of the world!
I surf here everyday with my dog ❤ The sharks should not be your main concern while swimming. The rip currents are more prevalent & most of the rescues are definitely saving ppl from drowning. The sharks, alot of the time, are black tip sharks, they usually hit & release. U should avoid being in the water at low light, like dusk or dawn & If u see bait fish jumping up out of the water or birds diving down that usually means they're on the hunt so just stay out til they move out. Black tip like to come close to shore to keep away from bigger predators however that means we share the same space & it's a bit murky here so visibility is an issue. I've been brushed & bumped while sitting on my board before & a few times, when I've wiped out, I have definitely fell onto them but they swim fast away when u scare them so all is well that ends well right!? 😜 YOLO! COME VISIT YA'LL!!
Whewww! Sounds like you've had your fair share of close calls😄 Be safe out there!
No great whites?
@@bpom527 yes ma'am there definitely are great whites out here but mainly further out from where we surf. The black tips usually come closer to the shore to stay away from great whites cuz g.whites like to snack on black tip so when we see black tip out there we know g.whites can be close. There are great white attacks here as well but not as common as other kinds of shark bites. There's also a thing called sharkbanz u can use, it's a shark deterrent bracelet, honestly I think it's worth the 100 $
@@MichaelBordenaro thank you! Try as I may my friend, safely is only a frame of mind 😎✌☀️
@@8WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot8 Do you use it? Or just know people that do? I just need to marry an incredibly rich mad that can use cameras and radars to alert his people when a shark comes close and get me out of the water! 😂That would work! Right? lol
