The problem with Montana is the younger generation just doesn’t understand how difficult it was to play in an era of true bump and run where the QB could be annihilated! Joe is the best ever because of many reasons, he played the best and beat the best in the most dominant conference era in history. Not to mention Joe could do it all and won 2 without Rice.

Brady and Belichick would have shredded that 46 defense. Sorry guys... I watched and loved Montana and the Niners but Brady and the no huddle would have the 85 Bears gassed and guessing. Buddy Ryan took a lot of chances-- and Brady would have made him pay... EVERY TIME. I don't care about 'bump and run'- Gronk, Edelman & Randy would have adjusted.

When Montana played defensive backs were allowed to make contact beyond 3 yards of the line of scrimmage. Defensive lineman were allowed to level a quarterback, no silly touches as today. Bottom line Montana had to navigate against real defense and league rules that made passing much more difficult than today.

Joe Montana played against the 1985 Bears at Candlestick. His stats were 17-29-116 with 0 TD and 0 INT. He was sacked 7 times. They lost 26-10 with the offense only scoring a field goal.
In 1983, He played against the Bears at Soldier Field and lost 13-3. His stats were 26-43-218 with 0 TD and 2 INT and was sacked five times.
In 1984, in the NFC Championship at Candlestick he won 23-0. His Stats were 18-34-225 with 1 TD and 2 INT and was sacked three times. The game is available on RUclips and watching it will show that the 49ers won that game with defense and special teams. The Bears defense simply got worn out midway through the 3rd Quarter because the offense had so many 3 and outs. Steve Fuller, the Bears backup QB threw less than 100 yards. The halftime score was 6-0. Also for what it's worth, Chicago Bear All-Pro Strong Safety Todd Bell started and played cornerback because of injuries.
Joe Montana simply didn't do well against Buddy Ryan coached Bear defenses.

Montana could throw the ball from any position going in any direction and didn't matter if his feet where on the ground or not. With that said, When i critically analayze what Montana went through in this era compared to Brady's era, in my honest opinion, Id still give Montana the nod. To me, he is the goat qb. And at least in this era, the 49ers had a real haad coach who knew what he was doing. Bil Walsh would have been more able and capable and smarter than Kyle Shannahan, and with that said, would have been able to have won those last two super bowls that Shannahan lost under his watch.

By the time the '88 Bears defense reached the NFC Championship Game, they were devastated by injuries to key players. Most importantly, that of DE Richard Dent who dominated the 'Niners O-Line and harassed Montana throughout their Monday night matchup. Dent's "flying sack" of Montana was key in securing that game for the Bears. Dent had 10.5 sacks after 12 games and wound up an "all pro" despite missing the last 4gms of the season. The loss of Dent, in and of itself was enough to impact not only the Bears defensive game-plan, but to create offensive opportunities for Walsh & the 'Niners that would not have been present except for his absence. His replacement, DE Sean Smith was barely serviceable, out of the league a year later and in short, was NO Richard Dent. This left the Bears defense as "barely" a SHADOW of what it had been earlier in the season. Other key players were injured, but either continued to play like DE/DT Dan Hampton (knees) & ROLB Jim Morrissey (everything) or were ruled out altogether, like rookie CB Lemuel Stinson(knee). So, Dent was not the only injury problem for the '88 Bears defense, but he was without question the most prominent and impactful. Don't get me started on the offense, QB Mike Tomczak had a badly separated shoulder and Jim McMahon, although cleared to play was still dealing with arm/shoulder injuries from a week 9 matchup vs the Patriots. If you watch the game, most of McMahon's throws veer to the right due to his shoulder injury. Tomczak was put in to relieve McMahon, but by any standard, BOTH QB's should've been ruled out, while 2nd year man & 3rd string QB Jim Harbaugh started the game...

This version of the Bears defense was hardly the best, they were missing several key guys to injuries. The 1944 Giants gave up just 75 points for the entire season!!!, the 1976 Steelers defense gave up just 28 points over a 9-game stretch (that's 3 points average per game!!!!), the 1961 Chargers hold the record for the most interceptions in a season with 49, and the most important stat for best defense....the 1982 Redskins defense gave up the fewest points in the history of the NFL with just 128 for the entire season. The 1985 Bears' defense was ranked 22nd all-time in points given up in a season, and the 1986 Bears were ranked 15th all-time in points given up in a season. The 1984 Bears do hold the record for most sacks in a season with 72...but that's just 1 stat out of many that determine what a great defense is.
