@Travis Hanks this video said they were willing to trade Young to keep Montana. Montana was out of the league in 2 years while Young stayed until 99 and was a pro bowler for 7 years straight and an all pro 3 years in a row. I was upset about Montana leaving but he was clearly diminished and only had 2 years left. Steve Young could have been an elite quarterback into the 2000’s if his style didn’t lead to so many concussions. It’s not like they were having a hard time choosing between Jimmy Glass and a Tom Brady still in his prime. It was more like a Favre and Rodgers.

Had the West Coast Offense not been “perfected” under him and Walsh, I wonder if it would’ve been as big as it became, or if it would have even caught-on at all. @@darknotered7425 I'm from WI & what I was refering to was the fact that the Packers had 2 HOF QB's back to back. And Favre 'retired early' only to come back & play with the Jets, then the Vikings and Pack fans & the whole country had a cow about it, calling it betrayal, he lied, etc. Now with the round the clock media coverage we have today, seems like Aaron Rodgers is in the same situation & everybody's 'all up in arms' about it again. I'm simply pointing out that this situation has happened before, and I was illustating it using a past great QB like Joe Montana, and in Aaron Rodgers own words we should all R-E-L-A-X about it and let what's going to be, be. Without looking up stats, I'm sure players on that KC team will say, that playing with Montana, even if he was not what he once used to be, elevated their level of play, or were thrilled to be playing with him. Maybe even Dave Krieg learned from him and elevated his level of play by while 'filling in' for him. If he went 4 and 3. I don't dispute your stats, just don't know them off the top of my head. In fact, Dave Krieg came from a small DIV III college ( in WI ) named Milton college, which no longer exists. I'd say he'd have to be some kind of football player to have a long NFL career coming from a small program like that. Wouldn't exactly call him a nobody. And maybe Montana's influence was helpful in them having a good season the following year.

Never had a perfect game. Ever. No one has. Your using the word far too loosely.
      Many QB's have had comebacks...
Brady has been sacked 521 times which is second most behind Farve's 525. He will be the most sacked QB in NFL history by the end of the year. He's been hit more then Montana. Montana was simply far more injury prone.

My personal memory of Mr Montana will always be that .... inexorable drive at the end of regulation against my beloved Steelers. We felt that injury alone had put us in a wild card spot: at the time we were vying for respect as a top level team again, which in the next few seasons they did get. That drive tore the heart out of Pittsburgh, it was directed under extreme pressure, against tight coverage played by top level players. Montana dissected that defense with perfect passes, thrown from all kinds of silly angles. He was a master surgeon at work. I kicked my television. My dad never even yelled at me for that.

There is no way to overstate exactly how excited the Kansas City fan base was to have Montana as a Chief. This was a time before legends left their long time franchises to extend their career a few more years elsewhere. To imagine Montana playing anywhere but San Francisco was insanity. Kansas City s GM, Carl Peterson could have run for governor of Missouri at the time and won. I've yet to see a team replicate the kind of electricity that immediately took over the franchise, and even the AFC west as a whole, as teams were jacked to host Montana in the AFC. It was largely believed that Montana would be the greatest QB of all time, and if it weren't for Brady, that would probably be true

and also it's Jan [Yahn] Stenerud. Tougher one but still. I was a 15 year old die-hard Chiefs fan when he came to town. It was so cool to see him play in person. I helped park cars for four hours to get a standing room entrance. You could just tell by his body language when he had the opposing defense fooled. You'd see him scramble a little and somebody would say "who's open?" and you just knew he had somebody. Watching a game in person was more eye-opening back then. We had a 27" TV that was enviable at the time, it didn't compare. I'm so grateful we finally got to a super bowl and the best days still appear to be ahead. I do get very nostalgic for that time though.

Brady is great, it can’t be denied, but the careers of Montana and Brady are so, so different as individuals, but also just the GAME today doesn’t even resemble the NFL Montana played in. Because of rules changes that have, gradually, made passing the be-all and end-all of the NFL, and the numbers of QBs just keep climbing. Brady has NEVER had a bullseye on his back. Montana did. Truly. Look it up. He was purposely KO’d from playoff games vs the Bears and The Giants in the mid-eighties...
Brady gets rid of the ball quickly, that’s part of it, and he is accurate, but he doesn’t have to contend with, say, Aaron Donald, actually AIMING to hurt him, as an actual STRATEGY...
Remember the way he ran over to the Honey Badger in the Super Bowl and talked that trash? Had a QB even THOUGHT of doing that in Montana’s day, he’d have been carted off before the next series was over. Depending on the OPPOSING defense, of course...

Crybrady has what you call VOLUME accomplishments accumulated over a 20 year stretch while being protected like Faberge eggs.
Since 1973, passer rating has been the official formula used by the NFL to determine its passing leader.
Due to new rules that favor NFL offenses, such as the roughing the passer penalty, an increase in the number of games, most recently in 1978 (*most recently in 2021), and teams opting to pass more than ever, almost all of the passer rating leaders are quarterbacks from the past two decades. Since 1950, there have been 93 quarterbacks who have finished the season with a passer rating of greater than 100.0, yet 9 of those seasons happened in 2018 alone. Moreover, Steve Young and Joe Montana are the only two quarterbacks whose careers ended prior to 2000 and are among the top 25 passer ratings in NFL history.
Therefor, passer rating is not a valid stat when comparing quarterbacks from two different eras. However, within an era and season itself, passer rating is a much more accurate and reliable stat to measure the true effectiveness of a quarterback.
Steve Young had his best NFL season and won his second MVP award. Steve Young set what was, at the time, the NFL record for highest passer rating in a season - 112.8. Cold Hard Football Facts states that Young's 1994 season is the second greatest passing season in NFL history, behind only Joe Montana's 1989 season.
Joe Montana had one of the greatest statistical passing seasons in NFL history in 1989. Montana set a then-NFL record with a passer rating of 112.4, with a completion percentage of 70.2%, and a 26/8 touchdown-to-interception ratio. In the playoffs, Montana was even more dominate, with a 78.3% completion percentage, 800 yards, 11 touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 146.4 rating. Cold Hard Football Facts calls Montana's 1989 season "the one by which we must measure all other passing seasons."
Montana's Super Bowl stats: 83 completions, 122 pass attempts, 68% completion percentage, 1142 passing yards, 11 passing touchdowns and 2 rushing, no interceptions, and a 127.8 rating. UNMATCHED in NFL history.
The All-Pro designation, while not officially sanctioned by the NFL, is generally considered a more prestigious honor than the NFL's official all-star designation, a Pro Bowl recognition: a minimum of twice as many Pro Bowlers are selected as first and second team All-Pro slots combined, and Pro Bowl selections often drop out, allowing a lesser player to also receive the honor by default, which does not occur with the All-Pro list.
      Tom Brady 3x First team All-Pro (2007, 2010, 2017)
      Tom Brady 2x Second team All-Pro (2005, 2016)
      5x All-Pro in 19 starting seasons is 26%
      Joe Montana 3x First team All-Pro (1987, 1989, 1990)
      Joe Montana 3x Second team All-Pro (1981, 1983, 1984)

"Simply no way to know how good Brady would be in Montana's era just like you don't know how good Montana would be today. Everything is speculation." That's not true, NFL history shows us that Montana would thrive in today's NFL and Brady in Montana's era would not fair so well. For one thing, in Montana's era there was no TUCK RULE or TWO PT CONVERSIONS, that's 2 SB's right there that do not happen. I also laid out in an earlier post about passer rating, the top 35 passer ratings are all QBs that played in the 21st century other than STEVE YOUNG AND JOE MONTANA. The next QB with the highest passer rating that didn't play in the 21st century is OTTO GRAHAM who has the 36th highest passer rating. So we know that Brady's numbers would be way lower than what they are today and Montana's in today's game would be much higher. In Montana's era a QB's level of play declined after the age of 35 from taking massive hits. So no winning SB's at the age of 41 and 43 years old as that would be fantasy land in Montana's era. That's 4 Brady SBs out the window at MINIMUM.
When Montana was TOMB STONED by Jim Burt in the 1986 divisional playoff commentator Pat Summerall said and I quote "NOTHING dirty, NOTHING unnecessary, LEGITIMATE by Burt!!!" unquote. Brady has his helmet grazed and it's 15 free yards and automatic first down every time. After Brady took a love tap from Bernard Pollard the 2008 season and tore his ACL the NFL made a new Brady rule, no lunging at a QB's legs. There's a REASON why almost all of the passer rating leaders are from the 21st century. This is not "speculation" but FACT!!! Montana had several concussions during his career as well as numerous other injuries. Steve Young and Troy Aikman retired because of concussions and Roger Staubach suffered TWENTY concussions during his career and he was a starting QB for 8 short seasons.
Brady has played PUSS BALL for 20 years and has not one documented concussion.
An NFL statement said all reports from unaffiliated neurotrauma consultants and certified athletic trainer spotters at 2016 Patriot games showed "there are no records that indicate that Mr. Brady suffered a head injury or concussion, or exhibited or complained of concussion symptoms." Now isn't that interesting?

JJ Birden was good but just too small especially in that era which was much more physical. The same could be said of Willie Davis but Davis had a habit of dropping passes...Montana had 54+ surgeries in his career. 2 of which could have ended his career......Theres a reason QBs didnt play as long back then, it was just a more physical game, especially for QBS.
