This isn't news really. Ive reduced my resolution from 2k to 1600x900 to get a big performance boost, fps in settlements going up from 15fps to 30+ on high settings. Sure, the sharpening could really help as the text is blurry, but playing at a lower resolution is a short term compromise. Hopefully this optimisation journey will continue.
it's ONE game dude, if you think there isn't going to be occasions that require graphics tweaks to get a game to run (yes, even in 2021) then you should go buy an xbox and stick to that.
It would be nice to see more extreme examples of upscaling, as some people (including me) struggle to play even at 1080p and have to drop the resolution down to 720p. The lower the native res, the worse upscaling techniques perform. So after watching your video I'm not really sure if it's worth re-downloading the game or not.
I thought they actually implemented FSR, which would be the new FidelityFX SuperResolution, CAS is just Contrast Adaptive Sharpening, so this is just sharpening, you can have the same with reshade
It frustrates me to see the community promote downsampling to recover lost frames. This is exactly what FDEV is hoping for and it is very dangerous. Before long we’ll all accept degraded screen resolution and FDEV will say “ See! We fixed it! Optimisations have come a long way!”.
Yea much better for a triple 1440p monitor setup. Horizons had a good stable 60fps on ultra but in some many places in oddysey it quickly drops to 10-30fps. This fixed it. Super sampling to 0.75 and AMD up scaling on a Nvidia card, everything ultra on a 7780x1440 resolution.
I didnt buy a PC several times the cost of a console to use the same upscaling settings tricks to make games appear to be running at res's they aren't. I'm glad some people who are determined to play through this mess have some relief, but I wont be playing again until its actually fixed, if ever.
This amd feature works quite good on high resolutions and best 2 quality options (other options looks terrible although you get more fps). But wont work as good on 1080p quality wise.
This little tip may have changed my experience completely. The game managed to stop crashing after a minute. I only play tested 5 minutes, mind you, but it's a way better result than i got since the release of Odyssey.
Shame it only seems to work on PCs that are above the recommend setting for Odyssey. Why publish system requirements when it is unplayable with those systems, it's baffling.
What is your performance like in a settlement on a planet, walking around? I was testing up in a space station, from the exact place you are showing these tests and at 1080p (that's rendering at 1080p, no upscaling), my performance is about the same-ish as yours and I have a 2080 ti. Any ideas? It actually seems like NOTHING gives me a reasonable performance boost. Even with everything set ALL the way to low my frame rate doesn't increase by much at all.
Damn, I stayed away from that setting thinking it would just make things worse to use it. I'm on a GTX 970 and I need every little bit I can. This literally doubled my frames on foot and made the game feel smooth. I thought I was going to have to upgrade my GPU. I spent hours last night reading reviews on the 3050, 3060, 6600 etc etc. Can't believe I missed this vid until now. D2EA FTW! 👍
This is going to help you on a beast of a rig aready playing 4K up till FDev decide to fix their screw up, it will however not save 15FPS in tuto mission on GTX1060 @ 1080p because it will not be enabled. AMD FSR is not good for lower than 1440p base res as it will noticeably drop in visual fidelity.
While its nice that Frontier got FidelityFX running, its not actually a fix for the problem. I mean, even World of Warships supports FFX, with great effect so thats good, but the performance optimizations still need to happen. You cant just implement a new upscaler and call it a day... I AM glad tho FDev put in the effort required to support it.
Just checked this out and found that mine was already set to fidelity FX so when I down scaled to 0.65 the quality went from bad to terrible. My pc is a little below minimum spec sadly.
*It's literally just Sharpening effect which is a feature available for literally anyone who owns either an AMD or Nvidia GPU, or u could just use ReShade to apply Sharpening to make the image clear at lower resolution but the loss is very noticeable especially to distance objects they will look extremely bad and unrecognizable also texts will give u a headache cause they will be messed up and pixelated.*
@@FtGFA You did not understand, AMD Fidelity FX does not increase FPS it's a sharpening effect it actually decreases FPS but combining it with lower resolution to get better FPS is the "trick" so it applies to every sharpening effect.*
@@aaronastra7938 I got what you meant. Thought it was quite clear (unlike the artificial sharpening effect lol). The loss of visual information is even more noticeable when you're downsampling from 1080p like I am. From 4k to 1440p is just going from amazing resolution to great resolution so I'd expect that result to still be fairly acceptable. Text is quite blurry for me when I try this and the headache isn't worth the feeble 10-20% increase in frame rate. The solution is still that FDEV need to fix their engine - this stopgap doesn't solve performance for me.
@@MASAo7 No post-processing effect increases FPS, except those who remove things not add to it, it's pretty obvious what FDevs are trying to do, i think they may go with Low-res + Sharpening and very low shadows for consoles, i feel like they should just abandon last gen to be honest and give a free copy of the game to those who own it on the last gen console on the newer consoles, now i know not everyone has the new console BUT u gotta understand that last gen consoles have a GPU weaker than GTX 1050ti and even worse CPU, now try to run odyssey on that hardware is just a nightmare regardless of the optimization! As long as ELITE is held back by decade old hardware from last gen then they will never improve in terms of gameplay, world and graphics will further be worsen to match the consoles, obviously Frontier will never do this because it means less sale numbers and if they had the chance they would've literally released it on Switch if they could just to get some extra sales that's how far they have fallen. "Optimization will come after console release" it's just sad that they will optimize the game because they are forced to do it for last gen console as it has extremely weak hardware otherwise i doubt they would've even tried to fix anything, because unlike PC on console the games are REQUIRED to run well if not they will be removed.
@@aaronastra7938 Exactly right I'd say. FDEV seem to be struggling to decide whether they want a game with cutting edge visuals or a game which will run smoothly on a potato PC. It's a business and they have to make money so I think we know what they're going to do. It's verging on scandalous that the new consoles are apparently just going to get a straight port of the version which last-gen consoles are getting. I've tried every possible setting and I still get the crawling effects. I see these on other people's videos, too, but not yours. Can you share your settings and build? Maybe there's a clue in there.
I'm running a 1080 with custom quality settings and until the release yesterday had a fairly consistent 60fps now I'm lucky to get 44 on foot, this option was defaulted on so I guess this is highly dependent on the age and abilities of your graphics card.
I also have a GTX 1080 (with an i7 4790k OC) and I did get improved frame rates if I lowered the SS to 0.75 (as I have said above) but I also had several system crashes.
I only play ED in VR, so are any of these adjustments helpful in the case of VR? I don't use any of the on-foot aspects of the game, I only fly or use the SRV. FPS is abysmal when in the SRV or flying above the ground.
Please do not justify the incompetence of the FDev otherwise they will never fix anything. The Frontier will assume that players are happy with their incompetence. Moreover, this setting does not help with recommended systems. So please look at players in general, not everyone has 2080 or 3090. Just look at the details and graphics that the game has, no way that 2080 should give 70FPS. This game has only one room which took teams of 100's and years to be built. So please, do not justify the incompetence.

You need to enable SMAA anti-aliasing to get the other upscaling options to appear as, if I understood it correctly, both of the FidelityFX scaling modes depend on an anti-aliased renderer in order to work.
AMD Fidelity FX was already enabled in my graphics settings. Since I don't know anything about the different settings, it's super-unlikely that I had turned it on by myself. So I believe it's turned on by default.

Works really well. Was getting between 40-45 FPS on planetary surface (GPU is GTX 1070) Now getting around 60 FPS.....will try in station and settlements once i get back from exploring
whats the update
@@ratstar4102 Patch 5...numerous fixes. One of which is the ability to use AMD CAS upscaling. Seems to work, noticeable FPS improvements and GPU load seems to be less too
This isn't news really.
So... to get a 2021 game to perform on recent highend hardware, I have to dumb down res? Thats not why I spend huge cash on GFX cards tbh.
it's ONE game dude, if you think there isn't going to be occasions that require graphics tweaks to get a game to run (yes, even in 2021) then you should go buy an xbox and stick to that.
@@xxbrkdwnxx My machine is above recommended spec. What would your expectations be?
Game needs TAA, check out the difference it done on alien isolation.
Oh my god so it isn't just me
It would be nice to see more extreme examples of upscaling, as some people (including me) struggle to play even at 1080p and have to drop the resolution down to 720p. The lower the native res, the worse upscaling techniques perform. So after watching your video I'm not really sure if it's worth re-downloading the game or not.
In some games there's a 20 FPS difference between for example low and medium graphics settings. In odyssey the difference is almost negligible
I thought they actually implemented FSR, which would be the new FidelityFX SuperResolution, CAS is just Contrast Adaptive Sharpening, so this is just sharpening, you can have the same with reshade
thanks, it helped even without reducing the sampling on the 3080 chart in vr, the miracle of the option, I didn’t know about it from me like
Nice! I play RTX3080Ti at 4K and now i feel at that is good for me:)
It frustrates me to see the community promote downsampling to recover lost frames. This is exactly what FDEV is hoping for and it is very dangerous. Before long we’ll all accept degraded screen resolution and FDEV will say “ See! We fixed it! Optimisations have come a long way!”.
Despite losing some quality, I can at least walk smoothly within stations. Thanks for the advice!
Advertising expensive pc chairs when most of us are here, to see how to make odyssey run on our Nokia 3210 computers, lol!
2x 1080P is not 4K because 4K is 4 times 1080P... Anyway it needs is FSR 2.0
Try playing with the shadows settings too, in some cases I get a 50% performance boost just turning that down

This amd feature works quite good on high resolutions and best 2 quality options (other options looks terrible although you get more fps). But wont work as good on 1080p quality wise.
exactly. I have a 1080p monitor and it looks ugly with down sampling. Like 800x600...

This little tip may have changed my experience completely. The game managed to stop crashing after a minute. I only play tested 5 minutes, mind you, but it's a way better result than i got since the release of Odyssey.
Alway good stuff from this channel. O7
Shame it only seems to work on PCs that are above the recommend setting for Odyssey. Why publish system requirements when it is unplayable with those systems, it's baffling.
Nope - I have rtx3080 - have fps drops to 20 even with 0.5 supersampling :D They just added technology to the engine which not optimized -_-
@@senyaak-5637 rtx 3060 here, i have the same issues, i play 144 fps on station and all, but in senttlement is like a hell
Even with everything set ALL the way to low my frame rate doesn't increase by much at all.
nice find!, I think in Nvidia you can do that with image sharpening on the 3d setting-> manage settings-> turning On and GPU, but I need to test more.

Just to clarify this is AMD FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening. Which probably means that FSR is coming really soon.
Havent done these tweaks but damn the performance has improved on my decent rig. Will do these changes later
ReShade doesn't increase FPS.
Well at least no one ever expected EDO to be a system seller because it sure ain't gonna be that now!
DLSS works only with RTX GPUs, FSR works with newer AMD and nvidia GTA 10s

How did you get rid of the 'crawling lines' effect from anti-aliasing. I don't see any false movement in your video here, either before or after the changes your talking about, so it must be something else. I've tried every possible setting and I still get the crawling effects. I see these on other people's videos, too, but not yours. Can you share your settings and build? Maybe there's a clue in there.
Thank you.
By running the game at 4k and using 0.5 supersampling you get 2k not 1080p @2:45
Nice bit of info, thanks

That's not how it work i am afraid.. It's not FCR.. it's just sharpening technique.. You are confused, and now confusing everyone. Overall lighs are better, still the game is far from ready, where are the real new team missions?
My RX470 ought to support this, but even though i'm on the latest AMD drivers it refuses to work and is greyed out to read "normal"
You need to enable SMAA anti-aliasing to get the other upscaling options to appear as, if I understood it correctly, both of the FidelityFX scaling modes depend on an anti-aliased renderer in order to work.
works for me, but on foot CZ can't go above 35 FPS, still need a lot of works or wait until console release

What many here forget is that you can use this also to improve your graphics with it. For example let it render native res and let it upscale and then downscale again for output the result is a sharper and less edgy picture.
