So how does this help us that don't run the game in 4k on not so large monitors and still having performance issues?
Down sampling the game makes it way to muddy for me to even make out what's going on, especially down to 0.65, and the AMD Fidelity thing makes Absolutely No Difference.

You confusing CAS with FSR you could improve your performance if you would just drop native to 1440p from 4 k no need to drop supersampeling at 0.65 and then upscale because I cancel eachother.
What Frontier introduced is the Fidelity sharpening upscale that was in any Radeon driver and made it for everyone BUT this is not the Fidelity Super Resolution launched in 21/06/21
FSR would be nice to introduce because keeps the quality of native and improve your performance with much more than this.
Frontier should specify in patch notes what is CAS so people not confuse it with FSR

They do specify that it is AMD FidelityFX CAS. FSR would be welcome, yes, and I'm told that it's a couple of hours to implement, do we could conceivably have it for next week if someone from FDev were reading this.
That said, CAS is better than straight upscaling, and does improve the look of the game if you're under rendering like this.

But shouldnt this be beneficial to everyone playing? I use a 1080p monitor and if I move SS down to .80 it should be similar to reducing my resolution to 900p which would for sure increase the frame rate - it would just look like crap. I havent tried it yet but I knew something was going on when I logged on earlier. I didnt change anything so SS was at 1.0 and the AMD upscale setting was on by default and the game looked way sharper than normal. Of course as soon as I went into the concourse it fell from 60 in the hanger to the usual 35-45 fps. BUT IT LOOKED SO SHARP!

The problem with subsampling on Odissey is that it's a workaround for the real problem: a poor optmized engine if we compare with Horizons, you can compare the first menu screen showing the hangar when the game loads (Horizon is twice fast for same graphic config).
I tryed this config on Odissey and agree with you that subsampling have a big impact in performance (including GPU ram usage) and some upscalling filters could improve a this loss of resolution, but Frontier should have to fix it's performance issues to allow us using a 1:1 sampling without low framerate (it's not usual to play a game using subsampling).

This really works best only on 4K monitors. Simply because when we talk about a standard 27-32" inch display, your eyes can't tell much difference between 4K and 1440p. While your GPU counts every little pixel it has to draw. Hence the big FPS improvement with minimal visual loss. CAS is helping only slightly here.
For people with FullHD or 1440p displays, dropping supersampling to .75 will reduce the visual quality a lot. CAS or no CAS. When FSR comes to play, that will be a vastly different song...

Just done this - it does make the game smoother for me without any obvious drop in quality in stations. Slight issue with doing this for me is that Elite has always been a very pretty game when flying around in space and on planet surfaces. Some of the vistas have been truly breathtaking (even in Odyssey), I'm not sure I want to give that up to improve framerates when wandering around a station. But then again I suppose it depends on what you play the game for.... will try it in settlements and see if it helps. Ideal would be to have the option to set the supersampling to generate a framerate with limits that could also be set on whether to prioiritise frame rate or resolution so the game could alter it for you in different situations. One other thing I think is making a huge difference for me (and probably for you too) is having a gsync monitor rather than vsync -so you don't get disruption to your screen even if the refresh rate drops significantly (just like you don't notice TV/movies @ 30fps causing problems), if you're relying on framerate being sufficiently high to overcome tearing a lower rate leads to a drop in quality much earlier.

  • @TheMaw365
    @TheMaw365 3 года назад +10

My problem isn't the base performance. I'm getting locked 90FPS at 4k max settings. The problem is going into any menu or terminal, npc conversation or instance change can cause random FPS crashes that sometimes do not recover. Going from 90 to 30 FPS because you dared to talk to an npc isn't something I'm willing to put up with. When it happens during say pulling a power regulator, you set off an alarm and your frame rate drops to comical levels and you're trying to fight off a swarm of guards it starts to make you really mad.

@@MASAo7 No post-processing effect increases FPS, except those who remove things not add to it, it's pretty obvious what FDevs are trying to do, i think they may go with Low-res + Sharpening and very low shadows for consoles, i feel like they should just abandon last gen to be honest and give a free copy of the game to those who own it on the last gen console on the newer consoles, now i know not everyone has the new console BUT u gotta understand that last gen consoles have a GPU weaker than GTX 1050ti and even worse CPU, now try to run odyssey on that hardware is just a nightmare regardless of the optimization!
As long as ELITE is held back by decade old hardware from last gen then they will never improve in terms of gameplay, world and graphics will further be worsen to match the consoles, obviously Frontier will never do this because it means less sale numbers and if they had the chance they would've literally released it on Switch if they could just to get some extra sales that's how far they have fallen.
"Optimization will come after console release" it's just sad that they will optimize the game because they are forced to do it for last gen console as it has extremely weak hardware otherwise i doubt they would've even tried to fix anything, because unlike PC on console the games are REQUIRED to run well if not they will be removed.

@@aaronastra7938 Exactly right I'd say. FDEV seem to be struggling to decide whether they want a game with cutting edge visuals or a game which will run smoothly on a potato PC.
It's a business and they have to make money so I think we know what they're going to do.
It's verging on scandalous that the new consoles are apparently just going to get a straight port of the version which last-gen consoles are getting.
Well at least no one ever expected EDO to be a system seller because it sure ain't gonna be that now!

How did you get rid of the 'crawling lines' effect from anti-aliasing. I don't see any false movement in your video here, either before or after the changes your talking about, so it must be something else. I've tried every possible setting and I still get the crawling effects. I see these on other people's videos, too, but not yours. Can you share your settings and build? Maybe there's a clue in there.

Please do not justify the incompetence of the FDev otherwise they will never fix anything. The Frontier will assume that players are happy with their incompetence. Moreover, this setting does not help with recommended systems. So please look at players in general, not everyone has 2080 or 3090. Just look at the details and graphics that the game has, no way that 2080 should give 70FPS. This game has only one room which took teams of 100's and years to be built. So please, do not justify the incompetence.

What many here forget is that you can use this also to improve your graphics with it. For example let it render native res and let it upscale and then downscale again for output the result is a sharper and less edgy picture.
