John Stockton only missed 22 games in his whole 19-year NBA career and he played all 82 games in 17 of those 19 seasons. That is unbelievable, he has to be incredibly tough to do that.
He wasn’t much of a jumper?
This season, only 5 guys played all 82 games.
He maxed out on the physical gifts he had.

He also played in a tougher era with hand-checking. Jumper or not, people get injured for a whole alot of other reasons too and not just a drive to the basket or contesting a rebound. e.g Kevin Durant, Kobe, Tmac etc. Stockton is tough - give him his flowers lol.

Payton described Stockton as tougher than Jordan and Payton wasn't a Saint. I think Stockton was the toughest to ever play in the NBA

Reggie Miller pushed MJ off to hit that game winning 3 in Game 4 of the 1998 ECF, and there was no foul called.

John Stockton was incredible... he played with a very similar intensity/intelligence as Jordan. Just didn't have the size/athleticism but he was one tough S.O.B. in a very physical competitive era.
Stockton was no scrub, a tough customer, the realist of point guard from the 90s, one of the greatest- the pick and roll was lethal
As I get older I respect Stockton.more and more, during his career I was not a fan of his game, because he wasn't a superstar type. He was a perfect point guard, honest, no bullshit, very tough player, many young guys should study his game.
man, i could not believe that people did not recognize him in barcelona in 92 walking amongst the tourists with his family. i would have enjoyed meeting him then. heck, i would enjoy meeting him now. he is a legend.
Yeah, as a kid Stockton to me looked like a lame, uncool 'old man' while MJ was that cool hype superstar that every 90s kid looked up to. Now as an adult, i respect him much more for his style of play.

I love John Stockton. One of the GOATs as PG. I was a huge MJ, so by extension, Bulls fan, but my heart ached for one of the greatest tandems in NBA history: Stockton to Malone. Honorable attributes of Stockton was his statesmanship, cool-headedness, and consistency. It does not surprise me he got over that loss quickly and scolded his son. Good man!

Titus not really. Yeah he was amazing but he doesnt get the credit he deserves and hes not known that much. For example in the last dance, with the dream team in barcelona he was able to walk around like a total tourist because he was not that popular.

I respect Stockton even more after this. The way he treated his son tells all. He sounds pretty honest guy who knows how to take a loss without searching excuses and blaming others.
I remember on the segment “Open Court” Reggie Miller along with Barkley, Webber, Shaq, and Ernie Johnson said “We did anything and everything to get a victory even if we have to trip, hit, hold, elbow, or push. We did anything it took to get a victory.”
From the baseline angle it’s obvious Russel was already stumbling to his left. Jordan’s push off allowed him to stabilize and shoot. From the half court angle, Russle’s momentum is masked a bit by his reaching, but his feet are already sending him out of good defensive position. Good no call.
The bad no call is when Jordan kicks Stockton's knee on the Kerr game winner. That was as clear a foul as you'll ever see but Jordan gets those and that's why he was undefeated in the finals. The Jazz and Suns were both good enough to have gotten one or two on the Bulls but the NBA didn't want that unfortunately.

The idea that Stockton was dirty is ridiculous. Players just hated hard screens. If you want to see dirty, go watch some Piston's highlights.

I live in Spokane and John is a hometown hero. Still remember going to his Dad’s tavern to watch Jazz - Sonics games. It was a great time.
Im a major Curry fan but one thing I never understand when people always talk about who the best point guards are of all time, barely anyone ever mentions John Stockton, his assits and steals records will never be broken and on top of that this guy barely missed a game in all of his career, he was incredibly durable, had amazing playmaking ability, decent shooter, and one of the best perimeter defenders in the league. John Stockton is definitely a top 5 point guard of all time

Stockton was really really good. He did a lot of the dirty work that wasn’t glamorous, but HAD to be done. He’s a guy I actually feel bad that never got a chip.

Damn I'm not 20 anymore. Stockton is the man... Whatta answer! Much respect. When I was 20 I wasn't a fan of his, I was more into flash than actual skill set.
I was a huge Bulls fan during this era and used to hate Stockton and the Jazz because I thought they were too boring (ie, not flashy- just stupidly strong fundamentals) and they kept coming up against the Bulls in the finals those couple of years. Now, I have a different appreciation for him. The dude is the all-time leader in assists AND steals by miles, and nobody gives him credit for that. Those things alone should have him in the top PG of all-time convo way more often than he is.

I'm glad I got to see Stockton play live against my Pistons during his final two seasons and Malone's final two with the Jazz ('01-'02 & '02-'03). Those were when I was a senior in high school and freshman in college and we all packed into my 1995 Mercury Sable! Great times! I still have a Pistons Corliss Williamson bobblehead from one of the games where first 5,000 fans got one. I saw a bunch of great players in those early Ben Wallace Pistons teams before they won the title and tickets got harder to come by.
John is one of the best and toughest ever
I am going to look at this from a "medical" approach. Just look at the biomechanics. The way their momentum was taking them and where Jordan's hand was on Russell and how he stopped on a dime and Russell tried but his momentum kept him going, there is absolutely no way Jordan could get enough strength to push him the way people think he did. I was not and am not a Bulls fan. You can only exert a few pounds of pressure bringing your arm across your body and even less in the position they were in. He didn't even wrinkle or move his shorts. You would be able to see his shorts move...a lot with the kind of push everyone wants to say happened.
Correct. I’ve seen instances where Jordan did do some dirty stuff - for instance, grabbing someone’s wrist and pulling their hand with him to make it look like he got fouled when going up for a shot. But the Russell shot was pretty clean. From some angles, it looks possible that Jordan may have pushed off. But the most convincing look for me is the camera angle from behind Russell; as you point out, Jordan’s hand didn’t even wrinkle Russell’s shorts. It’s also clear just by looking at Jordan’s hand that he wasn’t applying any real pressure. There is virtually no way Jordan could have put any significant force on Russell with that hand.

Like I said, if you know the mechanics of what the body can and can't do, then you would be smart enough to know that the momentum and where his hand and the fact he was going across his body coming to a stop, extending his shoulder with absolutely no force behind his hand would know you can NOT produce any amount of strength to push an NBA player out of the way, especially a solid defensive player like Russell.
If someone is playing d, leaning / in motion, it really doesn't take much strength do that much damage. Just like if a player is in the air going for a dunk and gets pushed from the side it really doesn't take much to cause a huge change

Patrick is the best. It's always a pleasure listening to him interview athletes. He has an absurd amount of knowledge. He asks questions that most interviewers wouldn't think to ask. And he's really friendly and has a great relationship with seemingly everyone, so almost everyone puts thought into their answers.

In all fairness, it wasn't much of a push off since Russel's momentum was taking him that way anyways. I think it looks worse than it actually is.

What makes Stock special is the way he's handled himself the whole time. He's a class act that the kids currently in the NBA could learn from.
What people should really talk about from that game is the Harper 3 that shouldn't have counted and the Eisley 3 that was waved off but shouldn't have been.

They would absolutely call Bryon Russell pushing Jordan. But superstars get different rules, and we all know it. It's not just Jordan.

THis is what I've always thought too. It's not the push off where you shove a guy and now you're open. He's changing reaction, then BR tries changing direction too and he balances himself hand to calf muscle. Foul? Maybe a ticky tack one. It's definitely not what anyone thinks of when you say "pushoff".

In the last 10 seconds of a Finals game, I'm not sure the refs call that foul on anyone. After seeing it 1000 times in slow-mo it looks like a foul, but when I saw it in real-time back in 98, I didn't notice it.
Please he's the smallest guy on the court, and back then the game was a combination of football and Greco-Roman wrestling, Stockton/Malone was a combo for the ages, one of those legionary pairs. I'm not a Utah fan, but I respect that organization to this day!

Reggie Miller pushed Jordan to hit a game winner in the Eastern Conference finals and they didn’t call it. And that was a much more blatant two handed shove. So to say if Russell would have pushed off on Jordan, then they would have definitely have called it is reaching. Besides, the ref wasn’t even in position to see Jordan’s one handed push off to call it.

The greatest Stockton story is when he got off the bus at Olympics in traffic jam, and enjoyed a strohl with his family.
At that moment all of the absolute greatest players to ever play the game. Would of gave anything to be able and do what he did.

Possibly the most underrated NBA player of all time. All time steals. All time assists. Some greats have said those two records are unbreakable. I hope, if broken, I am alive to see it... even as a Jazz fan. It would simply be awe-inspiring.
Also, to give credit where it's due: John Stockton was psychologically devastating like Jordan without the bravado. That's almost more terrifying. The truest pass first PG.
Obviously, I was a Jordan fan and I just always wanted the Bulls to win! I would hate the Pacers and Reggie Miller and I never liked the Knicks and was never Patrick Ewing guy, but I always had a ton of respect for Stockton because he always seemed to be an honest person and an honest player. That interview shows that!

Would they have called it on Russell? No. You have to see it in real time at game speed ... it was just masterfully executed. People who call it a foul watched it ten times in slo-mo and come to that conclusion. That was not how the refs could see it. To call an offensive foul in a moment like that - irrespective who shoots it - happens only in the most egregious cases. This one does not fall into that category by a mile. If Russell had pulled that of no one would have called it. It should not be a debate.

Could you imagine if Stockton had a great team behind him? Maybe Malone and Barkley as his forwards and Hakeem or David Robinson at the 5 and somebody like Clyde the Glide or Reggie Miller at the two? I'm surprised that so many speak about the push off of Michael Jordan with Byron Russell, but hardly no one mention the hand checking and the crowding all over MJ in which both are considered as fouls in these times... The hand checking was allowed so much back then but is just worst than a push off because it was a way of holding onto a person to disrupt their game... The crowding is now considered as a blocking foul in these time ... So like Stockton said, it was a battle during the game, and Jordan won that battle with creating some separation from Russell fouling him to hit that game winning shot... Now go check the video for yourself and watch the hand checking and blocking fouling from Russell because there was not no other way for him to guard MJ !!!! MJ didn't complain about the hand checking and blocking fouls, so WHY SHOULD ANYONE COMPLAIN ABOUT A. SlighT PUSH OFF.... Go check for yourself !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Witnessing Stockton's integrity in the face of mass media propaganda smears during the last 4+ years, I am not surprised to hear about the "teachable moment" for which Dan referred. The world needs more leaders like Stockton who isn't afraid to be the adult in the room and demand accountability through level-headed reasoning and basic moral compass. Among pro-athletes, no one has gained my respect more as a person during the post-Lockdown era than John Stockton.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Russell had so much momentum going to the basket that I don't think the push off mattered that much and nor did it seem like he pushed that hard.
Indiana vs Chicago game 6, Reggie Miller launched Michael in the Eastern conference finals to get open and take the inbounds pass and sink a three. The refs didn't call that a push off. A few seconds later Michael had a beautiful look to end the series but that ball made me think it was going to fall not once but twice and yet bounced back out making a game 7 showdown that there was not enough beer for.
Great video and my experience watching Michael were some of the great times of my childhood.
Ironically, I'm 45 now but 23 was better.
