  • January 28, 1992 - Tucked neatly in the middle of the 1991-92 regular season is this snazzy little dunkers showcase. In San Antonio's 109-104 win over the Chicago Bulls, we get a little bit of a taste of everything. Springy-kneed Sean Elliott hammering everything, David Robinson outrunning everybody, Michael Jordan hitting a Jumpman derivation, Scottie Pippen briefly contemplating hurdling a defender, Antoine Carr doing his best pre-Shaq impression, and more.

These kinds of clips make me so proud to be a spurs fan! Born and raised in San Antonio. Family tradition was to greet the spurs at million air airport when they came home from playoff games. They used to block off a section for fans who could cheer them on as the got off the jet. We did it a lot. I like to believe I was a kid welcoming them home during this era but it’s hard to say. Unless there’s a picture of the players I wouldn’t know. Definitely have a picture of a very young Timmy and David Robinson. That’s a lonely a couple seasons after the one in this video. It did give me a grin from ear to ear seeing pop on the bench as coaching staff. I didn’t realize pop was part of the spurs coaching staff during the Michael Jordan era. Learn something new every day! I’d give $10,000 to go back in time and sit at this game as an adult! Recognize what you have when it’s happening people! Life is amazing if you recognize it

@@russelturner5771 Maybe you could claim Robinson had a slight edge over Hakeem in overall athleticism, but even if so, it was a very narrow margin -- for which The Dream more than overcompensated with his ball-handling and footwork, especially in the post.
Also, Hakeem was MVP, 2x-champ, 2x-DPOY (including the same year he was champ, MVP, finals MVP and DPOY), recorded a quadruple double as well, was at some point a top-10 all-time leader in scoring, rebounding, blocks (top 1 to this day by a huge margin) and steals. In fact, the list of Hakeem's milestones is quite larger than Robinson's, both in quantity and in quality, if that's going to be our basis of comparison.
Claiming primetime Robinson was the best is a tough call, to say the least. I prefer to just remember both of them as insanely gifted players and enjoy them trading blows when re-watching old clips of such a high-class rivalry. (And if we are talking sheer in-game skills -- and not accolades at a particular point in time --, we must also add young Shaq to the mix, of course.)

In order for that label to even hold water, one would have to go back to the 40's and 50's, where the players made just as much as plumbers and played pro basketball for the love of the sport. After a few years they left the pros to work as plumbers (because they could make more money), or worked as plumbers during the off-season, because they had bills that needed to be paid.
