Hi, I am a local so I know. If you want to ride around Malta, forget about 'fast rolling' non puncture-proof tires (with inner tubes). Get some Gatorskins like I did and you'll be fine. Yes, Malta is very hilly and it is very overpopulated (happened mostly during the past decade) with too many cars on the roads. Gozo is less populated for now, but even more hilly than Malta. I clicked immediately as soon as I read the title of the video 😁👍🏼💪🏼 well done girls 💙 ah and you were unlucky that it was not very sunny as rainy days in Malta are becoming rare and far apart.
😂 Don't know who has the more infectious laugh ! Bless Chantel for all her punctures 🤍 Not one expletive ! Guy who bought you a 🍌deserves some good karma. 2025, need to get you two over to Sydney for a week, exploring the Blue Mountains. Laughing Kookaburras in the trees, plus you two joining in. Audio Gold 🥇 :) Have a Awesome day Katie & Chantel ☀️ 🇦🇺 🍓🐿
In all honesty, people who man that fruit stall...... Need to go out the back & have a word with themselves ! 😁 Katie, with 💳 "One banana ? Sorry, cash only" Geez :( 🎈 🐿
I love the spontaneous craziness of this circumnavigation! I'm so glad you had fun in spite of the spanners thrown into things. Pro tip: RideWithGPS has a road surface layer when you plan a route - Apple and Google maps aren't as keyed into that. Does the Edge 1050 discern between paved and unpaved roads? I know that's a limit on the x40 units.
Didn’t know about that map thingy. Wonder if it can be done through google maps? That’s useful. Croatia is worth a try next time, even get ferries to the pretty little islands. Worth a look? Top vid again. 👍🏻
I navigate with a Garmin head unit. Mostly Komoot routing but occasionally google maps. Even when I specify Paved routes google will almost always dump me on to paths and single track for large portions. Drives me nuts.
I have to confess, watching Chantel bracing her wheel against the top edge of a rubble wall when fixing one of her zillion punctures in the first video, did make me wince. But it looked like you both had a blast.
She has a piece of glass in her tire. That’s why it keeps puncturing the tube. I know you guys are experienced cyclist but inspect the tire carefully and you should find it. I had a similar situation and it was really hard to find.
I noticed in the previous Malta video that Chantal did carefully inspect the entire inner surface of her tire. So I'm not sure about the glass hypothesis. Another possibility is the inside of her rim has a tiny, sharp burr/imperfection. If all her flats had a hole from the same location on her rim, that would be a revealing piece of information.
Next? *_Greece_* (as we've discussed).🙃 I don't know where specifically b/c i never got to visit. Looking forward to experiencing it through your videos.
And if you're using Google Maps, you can also check the Street View for your impromptu routes-if there's missing/no images, its probably _not_ on all tarmac.
does Chantal has a channel? it' not in the description... would be nice to see the same from her point of view, and the sentiment of patching tires every 5k 😊
What to do next? Crossing the alps with a mountainbike. Or even better, Ronda Grande Dolomiti with a mountainbike. A cycle around the whole Dolomites. About 300 km and 12.000 meters to climb in 7 stages.
Depends on which tires you use. I use Continental Gatorskins and rarely get a puncture with my road bike. Even on my mountain bike I have to use tires which have some added punture protection otherwise I get a lot of punctures. Currently using Maxxis Pace with SilkShield puncture protection, they're good and fast rolling. The road bike is lighter, faster, easier. But I like to ride both. The heavier mountain bike serves as good training for the road bike faster rides.
Shame you never did a bit more planning and research and brought a gravel bike as I’ve been here the past 7 weeks and had a totally different experience.
The trick is that you still have to use some glue on the tube with stick ons. It defeats the scope I know, but it works that way - I tried it and they're ok.

Chantel is a trooper!
😂

Thanks so much. Yeah it shows on the Garmin but as we just pulled the route offline I just followed it thinking it would be road. It was not 🙂🙃
You’re having tooo much fun 😂
Your videos are always fun and entertaining !!👍🏼👍🏼
Glad you like them! Thaaaank you
Thankyou for the video Katy... Thought it was very smart for Chantel to have a tether on her phone,
Chantel is probably recharging that compressor pump more often than she charges her phone ^^
That’s the best Garmin tip ever! I never knew you could do this with Apple Maps. Thank you so much for sharing!!
Of course!! Well I didn’t know until I looked into features and it’s SO USEFUL. Glad you liked it enjoy x
Funny couple😂
If I ever have a flat tire, I know I can always count on you Katie to make sure I'm doing the repair right. If not, I can contact Chantal.😉
So your bike arrived with the pedals mounted on the crank?? I have such an allen key on my little toolset I always carry.
Noooo but you can just screw then on by hand. Getting them off… you can not.
Look forward to the next garmin vid 👍🏻
Thank you for sharing your adventure!
Ahh this brings back memories. I lived in Malta for 3 years in the 70s as a kid. Lived in Birzebbuga.
What a freindly place, car drivers wish you a good ride and they buy your food shopping for you. 🙂
Didn’t know about that map thingy. Wonder if it can be done through google maps? That’s useful.
Croatia is worth a try next time, even get ferries to the pretty little islands. Worth a look? Top vid again. 👍🏻
Oooooh Croatia with ferries. Yes please!!!!!
Hey Katie lapped it many times as have a house on Gozo (Which is far nicer than Malta)
I didn’t know you could send locations from Apple Maps to Garmin, great feature!
It’s so useful!!! I might like it as much as ClimbPro. Almost… 🙃🙃
I navigate with a Garmin head unit. Mostly Komoot routing but occasionally google maps. Even when I specify Paved routes google will almost always dump me on to paths and single track for large portions. Drives me nuts.
agreed. Should give you the option which is why I tend to google map routes as a car and then just ride like that.
I have to confess, watching Chantel bracing her wheel against the top edge of a rubble wall when fixing one of her zillion punctures in the first video, did make me wince. But it looked like you both had a blast.
Alone this wouldn’t have been fun. But Chantal made it SO fun!!
should try the perpilo , the 1000km circuit of sicily, much more cycle freindlythan malta

Or a tire belt wire. They are difficult to find and are maddeningly flat producing. It's one of the reasons I'm riding tubeless these days.
Curious how tubeless don't get punctures? @@jamesmckenzie3532

It happened to me once.
Sometimes it's brief deep in the tread. Tiny piece that just ruins your day
So you prefer climbs with sheep-ises to city centers? Thanks for the Garmin info.
Defo!!!!!!!!!
I never knew that was a thing ether 😂 I will be using that a lot from now on with my 1050, I’m the same love garmin have garmin everything 😊
So good right! Both are brilliant but the Apple Maps thing…. SO GOOD!!!!
Do either of you prefer islands for bicycling getaways? I don't have a suggestion, just curious. Do islands have a different vibe?

That 1050 is sooooo nice.
That top is pretty! Nice background music too
Thaaaanks Amy :)
Is there not an option on the device to show just tarmac ?
Got really excited on the Garmin and Apple maps route upload section 😮 Then found out my lowly Garmin 530 doesn’t do it 🤔
If you like hills and climbing come to central Kentucky in the US. Beautiful horse farms and great bourbon.
Apple map connection works on my Garmin 1030, thanks for the tip.
SO GOOD right?!!! Love that feature. Thanks for letting us know it works on the 1030 too :) enjoy
Next destination: Corsica. Not been there. Looks really mountainous, was told by a French ex-racer it is tough 🤷🏻♀
You must have been reading my mind…. 🤫
does Chantal has a channel? it' not in the description... would be nice to see the same from her point of view, and the sentiment of patching tires every 5k 😊
So where is your beloved shake-dry? Rapha has you in it's spell!

They're road cyclists.
@out_spocken Katei did mountainbiking and gravelbiking, too. And she loves the alps and even more the Dolomites.
Sicily Divide road route you'd love it. it's hilly
It's hard to determine how hot or cold it is
Not only your bike gets stolen but also your Garmin always remove mine
Malta looks like all the bad bits of Majorca without the good bits.
I started off on my road bike in Malta and then used my mountain bike so much easier and no punctures 🙏🤣🤣🤣 xx

You had it right 🤩🤣
Looking at all them flats tubeless doesn't seem so bad anymore.
Love your videos when things go tits up 😂😂😂
Hahaha glad you enjoy our misery 🤣🤣
Is it me or is that alarm louder than the 1040 solar unit ?
I never used the alarm on the 1040 - you tried it?
Yes, it seemed a lot quieter than your 1050
Wait, there was a _musical_ about Popeye? 🤔 Of course, that makes sense.
Muscat, Oman
Shame you never did a bit more planning and research and brought a gravel bike as I’ve been here the past 7 weeks and had a totally different experience.
Did you ride gravel though?
I just learned that Sardinia is home to 3 million sheep and only half that number of people! 🎉
Sardinia is beautiful and it'd be well worth Katie visiting.
I like this. I need to visit 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑
Women and navigation, never ceases to amaze me how the two don't mix.😁
Always carry 100 dollars of local currency when travelling.
Where did you get your implants done ? 😮
Tubeless........
Stick on patches are a joke. They should be banned.
Tip Top and 5 min to let glue dry completely!
The trick is that you still have to use some glue on the tube with stick ons. It defeats the scope I know, but it works that way - I tried it and they're ok.
