My wife and I did the Stelvio on her 50th birthday, thunderstorms struck down the Umbrail Pass, an epic day considering she'd never ridden in the rain as she was quite new to cycling, great ride Katie. 💪👍
People don't realize that this is part of these trips. It's not always beautiful sunny days with puffy clouds. But even so, there are rewards. Thank you for keeping it real and staying positive!
You need to come back when the weather is better, because it is so amazing ther in South Tyrol!! And Katie… if you want to ride in the Bavarian Alps , we are living in the south of Munich in a house with Garage and it would be an honour to be your host! Just because I really appreciate your life journey! Stay healthy and save, Sonja
What an amazing video! I mean, everyone can produce a fancy video of an inspiring ride through a beautiful landscape under a blue sky, but we all know it's not always like that. It is tough to stick to a plan in conditions like this, and it takes guts (for a professional RUclipsr) to produce a video of such a ride. Kudos! I'm sorry for you that Stelvio did not provide a better experience for you, but I really love the resulting video!
I did the Raid Dolomite in 2005 from Geneva to Trieste. Luckily, the Stelvio was sunny, but the following four days were soaking wet and cold. This brings back a lot of memories.
Loved these videos. God you are such a trooper!. I’ve skied many many times in all these areas in the Winter mostly in sunshine so it’s really unlucky that you got such bad weather. Your fitness level must be amazing the way you demolished all those big climbs. Fantastic work.
We love you @KatieKookburra! Your beautiful, brimming smile fills our hearts with wonder & joy! Don't know what we'd do without you 🍻 Thank you for braving the craziness to bring us amazing content 💝 Please be safe & have a blast 🏆
Thanks Katie for your content. I rode Stelvio from Prato in 2017, similiar time of year. The weather was clear. It is one of the greatest days I have had on my bike. The descent into Bormio from the top was great as well. I am really enjoying your rides in Italy.
Well done you. You will have to do it again sometime, but in the sunshine. I'm sure it will be a different experience for you. I once rode the three biggest climbs around where I live, all three several kilometers long, all having sections of over 20% and one in particular 80 meters @ 24%. ( it's closed to traffic in Winter). The ride was about 90 kilometres in total, and it was Autumn, cold at the top of the climbs - I could see my breath - and it bucketed down for the whole ride, so I know how you were feeling at the end when you finally reached your accommodation. Keep making the videos, I love the way you record your rides, and your honesty regarding how you tough it out - it makes me feel like I have company on the hard rides.
Katie, many apples here in South Tyrol, but barely any Cider is being made. This province is the biggest apple producing region in Europe. But The apples are mainly eaten or processed into apple juice and exported all over the world. We are however producing very good wine, and we drink beer of course. Yeah, some bike lanes can be quite steep in our part of the world :). Well done climbing the Stelvio in these weather conditions!
Ciao Katie! Been enjoying your rides in the Dolomites and now you're hitting the Stelvio. I was just in the Italian Alps last month and did the rides out of Bormio, Stelvio included. So much fun. Making plans for next year, can't wait! Ride safe. Ciao 😎 !
😆 It's a British Summer with added Mountains! Another inspiring video with authenticity and great storytelling. Keep ups the great work and you should do an "Audience with Katie K" either in a real venue or online, and tell your stories from the rides. An evening of stories and anecdotes from a Girl on a Bike. You'd sell tickets I'm sure. Love it, ride long, ride safe, have fun & don't stop.
I rode up Stelvio 2 day before you did and had more luck with the weather, it was cloudy but dry. It was such a great ride including going down the other side to Umbrail Pass and looping back through Switzerland. BTW there is a Stelvio Bike Day similar to the Sella Ronda Bike Day you rode the day before. I hope you have enjoyed the rest of your Dolomites trip. Cheers, Frank
Oh my days, Katie! Those conditions! 😟You nailed it - and safely - nevertheless. You'll deffo need to go back in the summer months when hopefully the Weather Gods will be on your side!
Cycled it last year before doing the Alpes, Dolomites then Stevio. Prato is the classic climb. Best and Hardest. The decent into Switzerland is amazing (in the dry.) Brave in the wet. Well done 👍
Very nice ride. Last year I also rode from Bolzano to Merano and then up the Stelvio. As far as I remember, it was mostly cyclepath all the way to Prato Allo Stelvio. I had really thick mist that day, but luckily no rain. I loved Bormio, very nice little town. I stayed in Ostello Alpino, which has the best breakfast I ever had. Anyway, good luck with the rest of the trip.
Wow, well done ! Can’t believe you carried on up the Stelvio in that rain. Very easy to get hypothermia in the mountains. I go so cold & wet on the Gavia descent it took hours to warm up again. Great videos and hope weather improves for you!
Another great video Katie. Well done for keeping going in that weather, not sure I’d have been so cheerful and positive in it! Your joy on arriving at a nice hotel was very understandable! 😊
You’re so brave, that rain looked horrible. I did Stelvio on Monday up and down from Bormio, thankfully it wasn’t raining but the descent was still super cold. 🥶 your hotel and bath looks like heaven 🎉❤
Funny, we took the same way on our TransAlp last month. However, as we did it by Mounainbike we dropped off in Natuns and headed directly into the mountains and up to Vigiljoch/Monte San Vigilo. Several years ago we rode the whole Vinschgau/Val Venosta up to the Reschensee/Lago di Resia, the famous one with bell tower of a sunken church still looking out of the water, and back again.
Well done. Epic. Did it myself some years back before real life kicked in. Coming off Stelvio, descending in the darkness in late September and unable to feel my hands in the Freezing cold was pretty frikken scary shi**. I hope one day I can go again before I'm boxed up.
Stelvio has been on my "must drive" bucket list for a while now. Hadn't thought about cycling it until this video 🤔. Great video, hope you've dried out..... that looked wet 🌧
You look forward to the iconic climbs and views. When the day arrives, the weather come and spoiled it. Happened to me while going across the french alps. Nothing you can do but take it all in. It sucks but also an experience that you'll remember. I've also planned a route across the italian alps perhaps for next year.
Well done Katie, and yes I know what you mean having to go back out into the rain when you're in a dry warm place. Still looks spectacular even if the weather's 💩
Good on you Katie, enjoyed the views , beautiful climb despite the weather, had to chuckle seeing you after the descent filming across the road from a Durex machine ☺☺
The descent it's always horible when it's wet and cold. Usually it's better on the ascent, because the body warms, but the descent it's horible (In my case I have also rim brakes, so for 1000m descent, it's hard), nice too see the experience you had. The food its greather after a good ride. Somebody sayed, that the taste of food it's a context thing :)
Great call on the course points. I use komoot for my planning and garmin connect just to get the routes onto my head unit. But, I'll look into this for my long rides.
Hi Katie, we love your content thank you so much, quick question... on which app do you schedule your routes, Strava or Garmin? and how do you add the food stops into the route?
I think you found the solution. Leave early in the morning to have your peace. and that bike lane....! Looking at the scenery over your shoulder was gorgeous! Pleeeese eat something more substantial besides bread and potato chips! Good for you, a nice hot bath at the end of the day.
Great effort!! I had a clear bright sunny day (in between rainy ones) to do it..what an experience. Did you go to the Bagni Vecchi as a reward... keep going!!
It’s lovely from the other direction too. Last summer I drove James to the top of Stelvio (we were staying near Como). He then went down the mountain on the quiet but beautiful side into Switzerland, round the bottom and then up the very switchbacks Swiss side while I videoed his tiny dot getting nearer slogging up the hill. I went up there in 1990 with a 39:26 "small" gear. I came from Switzerland via the Umbrailpass. I made it down on safely on rim brakes; can you believe it? I was lucky and had a sunny day.
Would love to do this mountain. It would be really nice to see a map of the whole ride and where you have started and which route you have taken. I guess I could check your Strava. Good luck
my comment may be buried but, how do you deal with the bike not being taken by someone when riding solo? take it into the hotel room? to the large supermarket (eurospar)? the part was skipped in the video, only mentioned that the shop won't like that you bring it inside.
@@mikel.mp4 Totally. I would get pretty anxious in a shop like that. I tend to pick places where I can be in and out in a couple of mins. I do bring an emergency lightweight lock too though.

@@Tante_Dani Good to know. I have ridden 3 long distance events in Italy this year (I live in Bavaria), and I would say 50% I could bring the bike into the room, 40% in a shared locked area (where one other bike got stolen a couple of nights later), and once had to leave it unlocked outside. Which was a bit nervy but a very quite village miles from anywhere.
I'm italian, i'm a ciclist and i'm so sorry for this. Every day i make big discussion with people, every time i try to explain that italy is one of worst place to ride, to walk or to be a special needed person. But we have a terrible road education and i dont know if this wil be change. I am very sorry
during the Giro, the Stelvio stage is often cancelled in the morning because...there is snow or it rains too much even for the pro-racers. And you did it in that rain, up and down...GI Jane is nothing compared to your iron will
As she's (almost) always smiling, she'll get enough protein in the form of small airborne lifeforms ;-) Anyway, don't worry about her - this girl is more experienced and tougher than most of us!
To you comment about the change in courtesy to riders, I have a theory. Tourists/non-locals vs locals. We have a heavy tourist load where I live. Off season it is generally pretty good riding on the side roads. People are mostly considerate. During tourist season, non-locals do not give a flying #$% about your life. You're asphalt fodder. Perhaps this is what you were experiencing?

We also regularly enter shops like eurospar with the bike, sometimes it is ok, sometimes they won't let you...
Would be interesting to know how it worked for her though.
Why don’t you use a Varia?
What’s the name of the hotel you stayed in?
I'm italian, i'm a ciclist and i'm so sorry for this.
Every day i make big discussion with people, every time i try to explain that italy is one of worst place to ride, to walk or to be a special needed person.
But we have a terrible road education and i dont know if this wil be change.
I am very sorry
during the Giro, the Stelvio stage is often cancelled in the morning because...there is snow or it rains too much even for the pro-racers. And you did it in that rain, up and down...GI Jane is nothing compared to your iron will
I love watching all your videos but am very concerned about your diet. Please tell me you do eat some protein???
As she's (almost) always smiling, she'll get enough protein in the form of small airborne lifeforms ;-) Anyway, don't worry about her - this girl is more experienced and tougher than most of us!
My bike is a Stevens Stelvio 😊 it can be brutal😮👻
Whatever the Italian is for chapeau
To you comment about the change in courtesy to riders, I have a theory. Tourists/non-locals vs locals. We have a heavy tourist load where I live. Off season it is generally pretty good riding on the side roads. People are mostly considerate. During tourist season, non-locals do not give a flying #$% about your life. You're asphalt fodder. Perhaps this is what you were experiencing?
Was hoping to end with pizza!
