After his solo he drops even lower to do the bottom of the repeating "sleeping in his grave" and it doesn't get noticed/commented on enough because people are shook at his initial solo.. but man, that is impressive. I love that you called it out!

Mayday is a good one, Ring of Fire, End of the Road, The Butts Remix, Amazing Grace and any of their mash ups just to name a few. Also give a listen to Misty Mountains by Peter Hollins & Tim Foust the bass from this group. Also on a side note another artist that is truly amazing is Haley Reinhart if you have not found her yet. She does some incredible work with PMJ (Post Modern Jukebox).
I've watched many reaction videos to these guys and I can say that you're the only person that caught how Tim's voice goes even deeper then what most comment on. Finally I said 'YES!...she caught it!'

@@micheltibon6552 yeah, it was definitely a hybrid Scottish/Appalachian. It’s quite a familiar sound. My family settled in VA right on the KY boarder when they came here from Scotland.
@@cydrych Yes, I recently looked up a refence to some Appalachian folk songs/sounds and that their roots could be traced to Scottish songs as a lot of settlers were Ulster Scots or Scots who migrated to the United States. I understand there is a lot of upset if I link the Appalachian singing tradition with the Irish singing traditions😀 and I don´t want to offend.

I too have listened to any number of "reactions" to this song and you have taken the words right out of my mouth. I particularly liked the fact that she didn't go all histrionic in her "surprise". You couldn't have said it any better.

I usually don't suggest Mayday right away and encourage reactors to wait. But as a voice coach, and someone who recognized Tim's bass at the start, this is the only reason I suggest this song on the first listen to Home Free.

I've Subscribed to your Channel! You are Very Good to listen to! With regards to my previous comments it is Extremely Important to wear Headphones for Home Free! Anyways I am not sure that you noticed at the end that it was Adam Chance, known as Chance (the guy who wore a Cowboy Hat but has the beard and mustache) that was doing the "Jaw Harp" sounds throughout the video! He's a Baritone with 4 Octave Range. Tim the Bassist has a 5 Octave Range. Rob the bearded one is the Tenor (2nd Lead), Austin is the High Tenor (1st Lead here) and Adam Rupp The Beatboxer Extraordinaire! Lot's of music to wet your whistle on here in this group!
Hi, Madeleine... I really enjoyed your delighted & delightful (and knowledgeable) reaction to this version of this song. Like you I knew it first as a fairly ancient Kentucky folk song, and found this rendition to be mind-blowing!

Welcome to the world of Home Free!! These guys started in my state of Minnesota, and I fell in love immediately. Tim Foust, the bass, likes to hang out in the mines of Moria with his insane bass depth, but he can also sing some amazing tenor as well, and your reaction to his low notes was priceless. Adam Rupp, the beatboxer/walking percussion machine, is simply not human. I recommend you listen to my favorite song of theirs, "Do You Hear What I Hear?" (filmed in front of the Winter Carnival ice castle in Minnesota). Then move on to "How Great Thou Art," "Ring of Fire" (featuring Avi Kaplan from Pentatonix, another insanely awesome bass), "All About That Bass" (which shows their goofy side), "Seven Bridges Road"....and pretty much everything else they do. :) Have fun!!
Tim Foust (The bass) has an incredible vocal range. I am convinced the man is a walking piano. Watch their "Ring of Fire" and "Folsom Prison Blues" and "MayDay", and "Snow Globe", and "Everybody Walking This Land" and "Do You Hear What I Hear" and "How Great Thou Art" and "All about the Bass" and "Misty Mountains" and heck........... everything they do is good. Just feast on having your ears messaged, and be surprised by the different genre they do, from serious to hysterical.

As Kevin Clements said, as a vocal coach you really should listen to their cover of the Crosby, Stills, and Nash song "Helplessly Hoping" and to their version of "How Great Thou Art." And if you want to hear more of Tim Foust (the bass) listen to their cover of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" and their version of "Everybody Walkin' This Land."

Welcome to the new world of a capella. Home Free and Pentatonix have rewritten the book on a capella worldwide. All of the suggestions for more songs to listen to are great. For Home Free may I recommend their "Ring of Fire" (Johnny Cash), my favorite, "Helplessly Hoping" (Crosby, Stills & Nash) (and then a quarantined Italian Youth Choir's cover of Home Free's arrangement), and of course any of their Christmas music. Pentatonix has 3 Grammys, one for their "Daft Punk Medley" (Daft Punk), one for their" Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" (Tchaikovsky), and one for basically being Dolly Parton's backup band(?) on "Jolene". Also, try "Hallelujah" (Leonard Cohen), "Imagine" (John Lennon), "Bohemian Rhapsody" (Queen), "Mad World" (Tears for Fears), and of course, any of their Christmas music.

Kentucky might as well be south Canada. Being from Mississippi and having lived all over “the south”, Kentucky included... anything north of Southaven is the middle, not the south.
I LOVE your reactions, this was my first time listening to this version and I felt like I was listening to it with you, so much so that we made eye contact when the bass singer had his moment, hahaha, I had to make sure I wasn't the only one blown away! The guy in the overall is Rob Lundquist, he is the lead tenor, the guy who looks right in the camera is Austin Brown, the high tenor, The bass is Tim Foust, and the baritone is Chance and most importantly is Adam Rupp the Beat Boxer. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed by Home Free.

The very last guy you see in this video is doing the Jew's Harp sound that you called a didgeridoo in the beginning of this song. Their cover of "Ring of Fire" is also cool because they had a guest bass singer so there were 2 basses, and both show their range which I have to say is impressive. If you like delicious chords done by two layered voices, check out Peter Hollens and Tim Foust (Home Free bass) doing "Misty Mountains. I would suggest a good pair of headphones for that second video, it is nothing short of wonderful that way.

If you want to hear more of Tim Foust's deep, deep bass, try Folsom Prison Blues. Their beatboxer, Adam Rupp, is an absolute freak of nature, but the jaws harp sound was being produced by their baritone, Adam Chance (usually just called Chance to distinguish him from the beatboxer). Somewhere I read that he produces that sound using a technique called throat singing.

It is a joy when all of my favorite reactors get to the great deliciousness that is Home Free. Others have, before me, offered good recommendations, so I'll just echo a few (anything by these guys is worthwhile). They brought country acapella to the forefront by winning the "Sing Off." And they do amazing Johnny Cash: "Ring of Fire" (everyone gravitates to that one) and "Folsom Prison Blues." They've gone beyond country; the Boyz 2 Men song "End of the Road" is incredible. If Christmas hadn't just passed, I'd recommend "Do You Hear What I Hear." It will become quickly apparent that beatboxer Adam Rupp arranged it. Someone below said it well that you may soon find yourself going down a rabbit hole of Home Free ... and NOT regretting it.

I love your description of Tim's (the bass) voice. I have no musical education but I've always said that there is a brightness to his bass which is so different from other bass singers. Actually, as you get to hear his 5-octave range I think you'll hear the brightness (or whatever the right term is for it) as he moves up his range. HAHAHA!!!!!!!!! So much fun to watch. Been watching people reacting to HomeFree for a couple of years now. I have yet to see a single one of them watching this song and NOT be bobbing and dancing in their chairs, even when they claim not to be fans of country music.

So I've watched dozens of coaches and singers react to this song. You are the first one to point out Tim's (bass singer) low part in the response at the end of his solo part. THANK YOU!!!
Tim Foust is an absolute beast of a bass singer, plus he has an incredible range. I only know of 2 other basses who can rival him in richness of tone and clarity: Geoff Castelluci of VoicePlay and Avi Caplan, formerly of Pentatonix.
I'm in North Carolina, but my Pappy's side of the family has been in Whitley County, KY, since right after the Revolutionary War.
It's always nice to see such a good first reaction to Home Free from a trained vocal musician. Not only are they great artists, but they are decent folk too.

Welcome to Wonderland, Alice. You are going to get Home Fries telling you to listen to their cover of Mayday as an amazing song, don't. It's not amazing until you've listened to a few other Home Free songs first to get a good reference of their vocal styles, although you are very observant and have made a great start on that. I suggest Some Girls Do which features Adam Chance (bare), How Great Thou Art in which the Adam Rupp (beatbox) has a singing solo, and End of the Road where Rob Lundquist (tenor - overalls) shows his R&B flair. You've already noticed Tim Faust (bass) and Austin Brown (contra-tenor - cowboy hat), but songs featuring them would be My Church and All About the Bass. Really all their songs are at least good most are great. Once you get a good handle on their typical voice ranges, then listen to Mayday. I won't spoil the surprises. Good luck, this rabbit hole is deeper than Tim's voice.

The most important rule to entering the Home Free rabbit hole is to save "Mayday" until you know all of the individuals in the group and their usual roles. I'm deadly serious on this - get 8 - 10 (or even more) other songs under your belt before "Mayday." If you do this, and are truly "Mayday ready" the experience is absolutely EPIC.

Tim definitely has my heart, but you'll find that the "lead" singer changes depending on the song and really love all these guys! They have over 100+ videos and not found a bad one yet.
