That's such a tough choice. On one hand, the Model 3 comes in a 390 mile range option but its drive mode selector is on a touch screen and on the other hand, the BYD Seal is super comfortable and a little more ergonomic.
I had one for a week and my family and I have fallen in love with how comfortable the seats are. Very supportive and cushioned well. Would be great for regular long distance driving if only it had the range for it. Keeping my eye on BYD because a 450+ mile version of a Seal would be perfect 👌
Affordable EV ranges are slowly creeping upwards . There's now a Tesla Model 3 long range which boasts a WLTP range of 390 miles! Currently, to get an EV with 450 miles of range, you'd be looking at a Mercedes EQS which starts at around £104,000!
You don't need to go to any other screen to adjust aircon. Just swipe up and the air con controls float above, this works for native UI, android Auto and Apple car play. Also why swipe when you can just use voice. It will even detect if it's you or passenger asking to change temp, and change the appropriate dual zone. Same goes for seat heating/cooling windows etc, has understanding of who is activating voice command.
That still requires a swipe and a tap. Too many steps and coordination while driving. When you access the heater controls after swiping up from the bottom edge in AA/CP and want to return to AA/CP it still requires you to go to the home page and open AA/CP from there. What makes it even less intuitive is that the task switcher doesn't show AA/CP either. The media change button on the steering wheel can do that but you have to cycle through 4-5 media sources to get there. If that button could be remapped that would solve the issue. Voice commands (when they work) aren't always ideal when, say, you're listening to music/podcasts, on a phonecall or having a conversation with someone in the car. And when you use the voice command for heating adjustment, it only changes by 1 degree at a time. These are all issues that can be resolved in a software update and I'm sure BYD will but this is something people can buy today so we've reviewed it as is. But for now, I'd stick to using the heater control from the steering wheel. /Jamil
@cinch You must have had the old version of the software. In the latest, not it's not a swipe and tap. It's a swipe up then you swipe left and right on the temp. Same goes for Android Auto or Car play. Doesn't exit it, it's above the AA AC UI. Not sure about comment about 1 degree increments. If you say it's too hot or too cold it's 3 degrees, but why not say set temp to x degrees? You can also as you mentioned change temp drom driver displays using the scroll wheel. ByD gives options, think you are used to Tesla giving you none, maybe doing it well but it's trained ypu to think that's how other cars work. Not sure why you had issues with voice commands. I mumble like a true Aussie and it never misses a beat for me. It's not like the old Ford systems where you have to say in particular structure or way. Its using Google
Think you need to do this again ! Another review with the same missing info ~ swipe up on screen to access settings or use your voice it works great for most controls like turning heating on and off adjusting the temp etc
These cars are getting better, but if you think the buttons and switches feel expensive in these BYD’s, either they have different switches in Australia (which are junk) or you have a low barf.
It's more so the dampening of the buttons and switches that feel more expensive. After filming the BYD Dolphin, I found that the quality of the switch gear differs between models so that might be the reason we've had different experiences / Jamil
Here's an update after spending a week with one after filming this review. Regarding the infotainment system: It showed a lot of promise (because it runs android) but it lacked polish and had loads of software frustrations such as inconsistent app switching, buried menus and limited use for the rotating display. Nothin that can't be ironed out with a software update but still worth noting. Rear space is plentiful. The leg room reminds me of limousine class space like what you'd find in an S-class or 7-series. The seats are very comfortable too. Headroom isn't impacted by the panoramic sunroof either (because it's electrochroamatic instead of mechanical). We weren't able to do a scientific range test but we noticed that it was very frugal in town driving. On Motorways, however the range would deplete quickly and the range estimate would become less accurate. With a mix or urban and motorway driving, expect to get around 240 miles of range. /Jamil

I don't think they're trying to replace internal combustion with external combustion. BYD have a very solid reputation for the reliability and safety of their batteries (probably one of the best reputations in the world). They're built so strong that they were able to salvage a fully functioning and safe battery from a crash tested car and put it into a new chassis ruclips.net/video/n2J0BVxt-rg/видео.htmlsi=snIir8gHWMFaFtr0 So I wouldn't worry so much. / Jamil
So wait you don't like the BYD Seal because it looks bad, and you prefer Audi? Have me a bit confused as the Head Designer at BYD and designer of the Seal is Wolfgang Eggers, who came from Audi, Alfa, Lamborghini. Also you do realise BYD is one of biggest battery producers in many other things, including Apple and Audi. Happy for your opinion on not liking it, but to add that Chinese tag really says a lot about you, when the design, well it's actually German if you think about it.
Would you consider the BYD Seal over a Tesla Model 3? Still not convinced of EVs? Let us know why.

I would buy a BYD in a heartbeat if they made them available in the US, but I know Tesla and other American brand would get destroyed by Chinese EVs
I guess we'll never know
I'm afraid consumers in the US would continue to be ripped off by Ford, GM and Stellantis.
'Tesla design looks weird outside, byd design looks modern that is i am interested.
What do you think of the BYD Seal?
You can control most settings using voice commands.
That's handy when it works but it' shouldn't be the solution to poor UI/UX design

Hello, thanks for the feedback. What would you like us to include to make it an in-depth review in your estimation?

Ha. I did think the same. I'd expect to see full detail on the infotainment system, Rear space, stats, range test.

Boycott Tesla
Any particular reason to boycott them?
That’s a bit hash even for a BYD Seal owner. Competition is good for the consumer. But the data leak and remote support needs legislation.
