- In this video, I will be attempting to beat Terraria by coding my own Subclass for Summoner, a Capture-based one revolving around taming NPCs to fight for me.
This is my "devlog" take on a playthrough, hopefully you'll like it! 😁

The fact that it’s a Pal-sphere rather than a poke ball just makes everything ten times better

He really harnessed the power of random bats to harass his enemies

well.. "creative" isn't the word I'd use, since this is just implementing the mechanics of one game into another
but this mod is still awesome and a pretty huge deal, especially if its compatible with other mods

I dont know if you will be adding more contentet, but i feel progresion will help with the balance issues, something like a need to upgrade the "MosterBall" to be able to catch enemies for harder biomes, the dungeon, hell, etc.
any ways, i really enjoyed the video, you are so good at modding and making content :D
Upgradeable spheres could be a thing, but NPCs do not have rarity, so it would be hard to know how "high level" a specific npc is
@@VerveineYTI think they’re more talking about the fact that spheres would be biome-locked, to encourage collecting more if you want enemies from different areas, such as the dungeon, hell, ice biome etc.

Awesome video. Also, a great way to show off the mod. And although it might be a little bit overpowered, my favorite part of pal world was having a super strong pal on my team. I think it would be pretty cool to be able to have bosses on your team. Maybe limit it to only one boss at a time to balance, or even decrease health. And I have never coded any sort of mod on terraria so I don't know the difficulty of implementing mobs with such complex attack patterns. Anyway, a great mod, will have to check it out.

@@VerveineYTat the very least, you could consider coding a few in, and then just adding a config option if you deem it far too powerful for normal play.
also, LET ME CATCH MAN EATERS! they could make for fantastic close-range fighters! you're severely underestimating their abilities!
Melee would no longer outshine the other classes if capturable pocket-monsters were a vanilla feature.

Especially, if you'd be able to add an option to capture even modded mobs, even if they would end up broken af, since that would be part of the fun as well )
Modded mobs can be captured if they use the same aistyles as vanilla npcs

Wow this is so cool! I'm honestly not a huge modded fan, but when I saw the video title from your friend Terraria Slime, I just had to look. I'm glad he linked your channel. I don't know much about programming but it was super cool that you went through the bugs and explained what the issue was very simply and how it was fixed.
I'm not a huge fan of the voice over/past tense style video like this one (I prefer "live" reactions like in let's plays), but despite that and despite the fact that I'm not a huge modded person, you still captured my attention and made me laugh, and I will surely watch the next video very soon. You're so funny! You'll say something completely serious and then immediately say something funny in the same tone. I also really appreciate the subtitles. @@VerveineYT that sounds great! Since you said that I listened closer when watching part 2. I can tell you have an accent but over 95% of the time I have no issue understanding you even without looking at the subtitles. There were a couple of words I had to double check (for example "cloak" sounded like "clock"), but I have 0 complaints, especially being someone who has English as their first and only language. I'm impressed! Although I know live commentary is different. Do whatever you're comfortable with and I'll look forward to more videos of any kind in the future :) I'll probably also check out some older videos too.

Nice mod idea! Maybe you should add an item that could allow the player to regroup the summons closer to the player or to a certain point in their line of sight. This could fix the problem with summons flying to far away or with stationary summons being “useless” as of right now.

@VerveineYT thanks (now, i wonder how stuff like bringing back more unique NPCs like certain bosses are gonna work, i imagine while having multiple of the same enemy in stock is important, it may be inconvenient at times to keep searching them out especially if they are rare enemies like a pinky or a pigron)
This is amazing and I love the concept! I do have two ideas that could improve the mod:
The first thing is a way to distinguish your summoned mobs and projectiles from regular ones.
The second thing is maybe the capture spheres could act as whips, in the sense that they tag enemies so you can target specific mobs
Other than those I think this is really well fleshed out and I'd love to see what you do with this in the future

A few suggestions on how the mechanic could work for balancing,
One way to do it is with Limited captured slots. But losing all the summons quickly seems very impractical considering how they act as an ammo type, so maybe a way for them to regen after dying or having bonus defense would do a good trick
Alternatively, I do really like how it basically gives summoner an ammo type, so maybe instead of limited capture slots for the index, it costs mana to toss them out, needing a mana balance much like mage has and gives good penalty if you keep repeatedly losing minions
You could also make different capture weapons that give bonuses, such as an explosive sphere that makes your summons do AOE Damage on death allowing use for weak summons that come in hordes like bees and slimes, or just general upgrades like from a Pal-Sphere to a Master-Ball that decrease the health pool needed to capture enemies and give bonus defense effects to your summons or something of the sort, maybe custom capture balls (This part is alot to ask for but rambling ideas is fun)
One last thing that seemed cool when looking at the flock of bats and the shields of serpents, you could have a "crowd" formation that make all of the pals always surround you and act as a shield
Capturing a bunch of NPCs act as a way to replace grinding for gear in a specific area of the game, and crafting items accordingly. By default captured NPCs have 200% of their base health so they don't die too fast
I'd prefer not to use mana, as it is poorly implemented in terraria and can easily be circumvented, and frankly; micro-managing "ammo" like I did in the wall of flesh fight is pretty fun
A way to make summons explode (likely on death) would be pretty fun, and i'll try to come up with something :)
And yes, i'd like to add biome specific spheres that give capture bonuses in their respective biomes
A flock formation would be cool, but likely a nightmare to code, unfortunately

Make a craftable hardmode sphere that requires a regular one with some rare stuff that can capture minibosses and the ability to despawn summoned NPC's to free up slots or heal them.
I already made more spheres, which you'll be able to see in the next video, and there is unfortunately no way to tell if an NPC is a miniboss or not

I'd recommend adding some sort of indicator so you can tell which enemies are your allies, it looks really hard to tell

That’s very good but in a far future make it compatible with calamity or big mods and you could make a 2 sphere that Is after moonlord that lets you get bosses

Depending on how calamity NPCs are done, it might or might not work

Ah yes, summoner, but good
very well made, I'd say the only issue I see with it is that it doesnt really play nice with how the rest of terraria progresses, as from what I've observed, the game design philosophy is about replacing old, weak gear with new, stronger gear, and so a singular item being capable of going this far into the game feels like it could be reworked, say, perhaps you need higher tier spheres to be able to capture later game targets or something, maybe using one is more limited. The premise of a class that uses it's surroundings as a weapon, turning enemies against eachother by capturing them is insanely cool, it just needs some slight tweaks to allow it to work with the game's current balance. One thing that could work, maybe different sphere's could be colored by rarity and only be able to capture enemies that can typically be dealt with at that stage of the game. a white sphere for common surface enemies, a blue sphere for slightly stronger enemies that become manageable with proper gear, maybe things like ice and desert biome enemies, maybe a green sphere for enemies that are around dungeon, corruption, and jungle; orange rarity for enemies that are found in hell, etc
Capturing enemies from a specific biome somewhat replaces the process of finding and turning resources from that biome into weapons
It's a mod after all, and I don't think the change of perspective on gearing up for a fight hurts that much
I will however make biome themed sphere, with higher capture threshold and damage when used in a specific biome :)

I think mobs that was captured must save like, 20% of its original power Separate from the effects of your equipment, and also with summoner power should be small hp stat
awesome mod but one thing i think you should allow piranhas to be captured i feel like it would be fun if i could make a water arena and fight bosses with the turtle mount

maybe an idea you could try is making it bosses are not catchable(if you were planning that or something) but making certain enemies be able to be enhanced to become the boss later on like for example maybe the eye of Cthulhu could be made by giving the demon eye 30 evil material( shadow scales or brain tissue).
edit: also idk if this was in the video but maybe a way to be able to revive enemies
Bosses would likely be a huge balance issues, i'll think about it but won't promise anything

Much like Palworld, this concept was already done by Starbound
Starbound is kind of a forgotten game though at this point
A capture system isn't much of a novelty to come up with, and I had completely forgot starbound had one lol
idk if this would be possible but being able to capture bosses using upgrades speres that are blocked by later boos progression would be really cool to see. eg. using tissue samples or something to make a ball to capture eoc or something
Capturing bosses would lead to some very unbalanced gameplay, more than it already is

@@VerveineYT i'm talking very early bosses in mid to late hardmode like eoc after the twins since hardmode enemies wouldn't really be able to stand up to bosses like empress and fishron

At the moment its just another capturemon game, u could add farms or stations to get the items of the mobs u got, and craftable balls instead of a single weapon, u could also use a rng based capture based on the def or diff of the mon.
rng based capture would likely feel pretty bad since terraria is fast paced and not turn based
As you can see in the playthrough, most targets die in 1 or 2 hits and are pretty hard to capture in the first place, adding rng on top would be too much

Whips would likely be op, and the sphere already implies quite a bit of micromanagement with constantly summoning new captures as the old ones die
I think it might be overwhelming the average player
you should add some kind of indicator so the player can tell which creates are captures or not

reminds me of aequus mod... this is pretty cool but seems buggy since you are not actually using the creature Ai itself but replicating it. aequus mod works with other mods and modified vanilla Ai so you should look into that it will increase the quality of this project! great job as always Verny
Not gonna lie, I have no idea how aequus mod did this lol
I'm happy with how AIs work in my mod though, modifying them allows me to make them more aggressive/reliable, which is pretty nice in a lot of cases, at the cost of compatibility

Kinda wish the minions got stronger with levels just like with palworld but to seperate it from palworld instead of pals making your other pals stronger from typing such as cremis boosting neutral types the summon boost accessories should boost your "pal" damage
Oh and maybe make bosses capturable but you would have to beat them first or lower their hp and get them that way also make the captured creatures give their drops as well bosses would give their item bags and creatures such as hornets would drop their stingers on successful capture
one LAST thing if its not too hard to code have certain or if not all mobs in terraria that are capturable to have Terrarian partner skills slimes would probably give you extra jump height and IF the eye of cthuhlu is capturable would lower dash cooldown or give you an extra dash on the shield of cthuhlu

I never knew i wanted something so badly until right now. Will there be/is there a PC for the mobs you catch? When they die do they go away forever or is there a way to get them back?
There is no PC, given how common terraria enemies are, they are dispensable here
the philosophy is different from a pokemon/palworld game where you'd train a specific creature to become as strong as possible

If so, I'd suggest putting them on a long cooldown instead to reduce grind. It's already balanced around minion slots anyway.

Yes, captured enemies permanently die if defeated
It would seem like an added grind, but it's actually not since capturing enemies replace the process of grinding resources in a specific biome and turning them into weapons. Here, captures ARE the weapon
I'll be listening to feedback from users once the more is released, and am not opposed to tweak it :)
i know it's not a good idea for everything to be capturable, but i think it should be a config option just for fun (maybe with a disclaimer that it's not balanced)
Capturing everything is not that simple, I have to code an AI manually for each enemy AI style

In this mod, you already have to "slay" the mob with the sphere to capture it

I have to manually code a behaviour for every capturable aistyle, so that would be a ton of work

I don't think so, I generated a LOT of worlds while working on my cave mod, and didn't see that many of them
