  • In this video, I will be beating Terraria with a Palworld Class I coded.
    It is a summoner subclass where the player can tame NPCs and use them like minions.
    This video is the second half of my devlog-playthrough on the mod

      @@VerveineYTit could be an accessory you can disable + heres an idea to make palworld trainer class feel a bit stronger and unique: alt helmets for it.

    I like how Pal world's system got a full fledged and fleshed out mod before Pokemon...
    Any pokemon mod doesn't turn the game into a creature capture... It just adds Pokemon NPCs or normal summons at best...

    I don't know if it's already been said but, I think it would be a huge time saver to be able to capture the Phantasm Dragon and the Ancient Vision from the Lunatic Cultist. The devlog/playthrough videos are also really fun to watch.

    depending on how comfortable you are with making in game menus, It could be a good Idea to let people have some more options for sorting their captures. It seems like being able to favorite or reserve an npc in an inventory type of thing (could model a station for it after the one from palword) could be good for boss prep. A mod config could also be very useful for playability, being able to chose between options like an outline, and arrow, or opacity/display priority for identifying your captures could improve playability for people with different preferences. another thing could be to let the player recover perished captures, this could make it more rewarding to collect rare npcs.

      It could easily be bundled into an NPC as well, kinda like how Gambler has the Coupier for showing your current card deck.

    I’m really glad you added the biome spheres to the game, and they definitely made progression feel a lot more linear, and that you had more to strive for, Although I’m kind of disappointed that the last sphere wasn’t the “terra sphere” or maybe a “zodiac sphere” as a palworld zenith equivalent. Anyways, despite the fact that you said you’re done with the mod, I’m still gonna give you some suggestions on balancing/mechanics that I think could be added to the mod.
    First, I noticed that you’re playing in normal mode, so you didn’t explore the possibilities of expert mode exclusive accessories or spheres that could drop from bosses. I think the grind for spheres could’ve definitely been simplified if they were tied to boss drops, instead of being crafted from biome materials, and that would’ve given room to have some boss spheres be upgraded in hardmode, either with the mech souls or hallowed bars. For instance the eye of Cthulhu could drop an “all seeing sphere” which would be a forest/caverns biome sphere, and in hardmode after you defeated the twins you could upgrade it to the “terminators eye” which would be the same sphere but with a considerable damage increase, plus an increased capture rate.
    Second, I think minions should have increased/decreased stats for the biomes they’re in to encourage the use of different minions and to use different spheres. I’m not sure what the margin would be for the stats, but I imagine it would work similarly to the npc happiness system. So for instance, demons or fire imps would get a +30% health and damage increase when used in hell, a +15% hp and dmg increase in the caverns/underground, a 15% decrease of dmg and hp if used in the jungle, forest, crimson and desert, and a 30% decrease of dmg and hp if used in the ocean or the tundra (ice biome). I understand if you don’t want to add a system like this, as not only is it a pain to code, but it also messes with the balancing, but I still think that something along these lines would be a cool addition for the mod. Maybe tweak the percentages a little.
    Third, I think a complete overhaul could be made in terms of the spheres actually damaging enemies, and instead of throwing a sphere, each sphere conjures a bow around the sphere itself (like the one in palworld that you use before you get good pals) to damage enemies to the point of capturing, and then you can throw the sphere at them. This won’t require any arrows, and I think it would function similarly to the role of whips for summoners, and maybe each sphere/bow could even apply summon tag damage, but only tied to the use of the bow. As for a balance change in this regard, I think the actual sphere that you throw should have a massively reduced damage, to encourage actually using the bow function of the sphere. Adding a bow function to all spheres would also help when you run out of summons to use, especially if you’re grinding or fighting bosses.
    Fourth, (and probably the last since I’m running out of brain juice) I think there could be a storage system in place for your summons, so that you can sort through which ones you actually want to use, and which ones you’ll save for later. Maybe something like one of the pokebox things in Pokémon (don’t know if palworld has one) where you can store Pokémon, but instead you’ll just be swapping around your summons and maybe even disabling some of them (so that they won’t be released). Similarly, you could have an item in your inventory that can just open up the UI for the box wherever you are, (tied to a keybind) so that you can swap around your summons on the fly.
    Oh and since I remembered, but I don’t want to draw this out any longer, maybe some accessories that boost projectiles or physical damage, but decreases the other.
    ANYWAY, even without these additions, I think this is a neat little content mod that is worth doing a playthrough of, and it compliments summoner well. I am now out of brain juice. Goobye

      - I will be adding a "zenith" (luminite) sphere, the reason I didn't go with a terraia palette for the current final one is because the rainbow palette is pretty :(
      - Tying spheres to bosses is a no-go, as you often grind for captures in a specific biome to deal with its boss. It would make that process that much more grindy, and enemies you'd be able to catch easily at a specific moment would always be to weak for your current progress
      - Catching NPCs from a specific biome is already what needs to be done to defeat its boss in a lot of cases, and they are already pretty strong at it, this point would likely just nerf creative solutions (farming for a specific external NPC to deal with a boss), and causes issues (eg : dungeon has no boss, and hardmode dungeon mobs are super cool)
      - Wouldn't that be a confusing visual change ? It sounds like it adds a weapon switch or keybind for the sake of adding one, on a weapon that already has 2 different modes and 3 keybinds tied to it
      - I will be looking into a storage system down the line if people like the mod :)

    how about an item that allows you to slowly heal your captured creatures? i'd imagine someone seeing the process of capturing a new bunch of creatures after the old one died as a chore of sorts, so this kind of an item might reduce the grind a little.
    tbh, anything that allows for more interaction with your summons - perhaps even something beyond simply healing - would always be fun. i love your mods and vids, keep up the good work!

      I drastically reduced the grinding necessary in the public version by "multiplying" NPCs on capture
      I don't know how healing would feel, and I'll try to think of more involved gameplay, though, unlike summoner, this subclass needs to constantly resummon captures

    two small ideas for the mod if you decide to add extra content:
    an item unlocked mid/late PHM that lets you catch your town NPCs (maybe Flymeal + Clothier Doll?)
    special post all-mechs palsphere that can catch KS, EoC, and the evil bosses, but *not* skeletron due to his funny day attack, only 1 boss would be summonable at a time

    you definitely need to have a way to distinguish the minions from mobs and for you to still get the enemies loot when captured.

    you should make the bosses obtainable, maybe by the time you reach hardmode you would be able to tame the early hardmode bosses (for wall of flesh maybe you could just have his eyes and jaw orbit around you), and after defeating golem you could capture any boss up to golem, and after moon lord you could get a new endgame sphere that allowed you to capture every boss including moon lord himself

      I'd rathe bosses not be tameable, not only will it cause even more balance issues, the added workload is just not worth it to get everything working smoothly
      plus capturing them will very likely end up feeling like a chore ...

    i think being able to use your captured enemies alongside minions would be cool, as in summoned minions would reduce the number of capture slots available by 2 per minion slot used. It could even be a config option incase people want it or not.

    I would really like to see a post-moonlord capture sphere for the bosses (and boss minions) not really sure how it would work with multi segment bosses tho like EOW and moonlord

    I feel like the issue of the game becoming more grindy by the endgame could be solved by making a counter of every capturable enemy and having to capture them 5 times before you can use one slot of them indefinitely, and 4, 4, 4, 4, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2, 1 and 1 to infinity times for every new slot. That makes it so enemies you naturally collect still end up mattering and being able to be used while incentivizing variety and almost eliminating the grind while still leaving it as a possibility in case you want to minmax and still cheese moon lord with idk 20 shotgun guys + nebula brains. Also maybe make capture more automatic to prevent problems you got during the pillar fights? Still, great job, seems like this is tons of fun

      This sounds a bit complet, I feel like my solution of duplicating captures will already be pretty good
      It means a player with the universal sphere would have taken 40 minutes at most grinding in the temple instead of my 2 hours, not even accounting for the damage and capture power added by the sphere

    I would suggest the ability that if your tamed creatures die, their drop is instantly collected.

    Maybe make a sphere for bosses but they're not infinite like the other ones but instead of neeing to kill the boss with it whatever percentage the boss HP is is the perchance of getting it (so like if it was at 10% hp you have 90% chance, but you don't get the rewards for killing it only the boss)
    Oh also can you make it work with the calamity mod? I think that will be cool

    You should add the “Canon Sphere” i mean thats an actual Tool in Pal World and it can be a huge upgrade for damage and Velocity of the spheres.

    You could add an option to be able to save the trapped enemy back to the palball, it also adds an option to throw away the trapped enemies that we don't want. By the way, excellent mod I loved it!

      I do not plan on making captures re-tameable after being released, as the mod is "balanced" around making them disposable and captureable in large quantities
      There is already, howere, a keybing to make active captures disappear

    I think it would be cool to add a gui telling you everything you have caught as well as a way to store and heal caught npcs the last thing I would want is a boss capture sphere for catching bosses

    I feel like a hotkey that opens up a menu so you can sort through your captures and get rid of ones you don’t want and select captures you do want would be a great quality of life addition. I’ve been super excited for this mod since I saw the first video and am super excited to play it!

      @@VerveineYTI feel like you could just use the arrow keys to help select between different enemies which people already associate with moving through a menu (idk if there’s already binds for arrow keys in terraria because I never use them)

    You should make spray healing potions like pokemon that can be purchased from the zoologist so you dont have to farm them. Also letting players capture even one boss at a time would totally change the game here, even if the boss had halved stats or something.

      A ton of players have been suggesting boss captures, I may look at it in the future, but i'd need to recode every boss ai one by one for it to work

    Something that would be nice for all the vine based enemies (man eaters, the hardmode man eaters and curruption cursed vine thing) was if they attached to the player and stayed near the player (like the plantera phase 2 vines) kinda like the true melee of summoner

    For some reason the grass hopper can be caught and if sent out is invisible and take up a slot but does nothing also it doesn't disappear if leave and re-enter the world

    Do you plan on adding boss captures like the real game? Like post ML you can craft the final capture sphere which allows the capturing of bosses, or maybe since the bosses in palworld are just beefed up version of already existing pals you could make so some mobs could spawn as a "Boss" variant of it. Just a piece of my mind, as always banger video and mod 🙌

      I am not planning on making bosses tameable, not only would grinding for them feel very awkward (summon boss, don't kill it?), they would also make the more even more unbalanced than it already is 😐
      I want progression difficulties to be solved by taming creative enemies (potentailly rare ones, such as paladins), not by summoning a bunch of boses 🙁

      @@VerveineYT yeah, it would ruin the balance if you could get it at that stage of progression, that is why i suggested it to be post-moonlord. So its like a cool novelty and you can be silly op and have fun, like most post-moonlord items.

      The issue then becomes the amount of work required on my end, I have to code a custom behaviour for every tameable AIstyle, and overriding each boss with myt own behaviour would likely be a nightmare to get rigjt, and not "feel scuffed" :/
      Adding a luminite sphere, I could likely make an OP one with absurdly high capture rates, and that allows summoning a literal army, that could be funny too

    I think it'd be neat if there was a config that added support to any modded enemies, so if people wanted to have it work with other mods it'd be great. Due to it also being in the config, there wouldn't be any reason to try to fix most issues that may arrise due to it maybe being unstable, but behind a config.

    Recapturing “pals” you have out in combat would a cool mechanic you could have it so that when your sphere is on capture mode if you hit a enemy that is fighting for you the sphere could recapture it and I don’t know if this is possible give the sphere pierce but like only when you hit something you control so that your captures won’t block the thing you are trying to capture if this feature is added

      You'd constantly recapture your npcs by mistake during combat, or when trying to capture hostile NPCs

    Been doing a playthrough of this mod and am having a great time! Have you considered adding the sphere launchers from palworld? They would make combat alot more engaging imo. The normal Sphere Launcher would help with the range issues when fighting enemies from a distance, the Scatter Launcher would help with catching/dealing to large groups of enemies, and the Homing Launcher would help in the endgame where things like the Lunatic Cultist and other very speedy/hard to hit enemies show up.

      I will likely not be adding sphere launchers, but I can tune up the velocity of upgraded spheres :)

      It depends on the AIstyle used my NPCs in said mods, but generally speaking, the game should be too fast at this point for it to be enjoyable

    Not sure how hard it would be to implement but I noticed that the captchured enemies don't inflict debuffs unlike thier normal variants (eg ichor stickers) so maybe you could change that
    Overall this class look pretty fun, you mainly need to balance out the post-plantera stage and it's gonna be great!

      Because re-logic never intended that projectile to damage hostile NPCs
      I'll have to modify properties of individual projectiles for that to work, which i'll likely do for vanilla cases

    You should either make this after you kill the boss, with cheats or end game. You should able to capture bosses but they are like mini versions.

    You may want to remove being able to capture enemies spawned by statues because you can get a wraith statue pre hardmode and completely break progression

      Wraiths are not a lot stronger than demons, and given the effort it takes, i'll definitely allow it

      Also allowing the enemy summons to work with the thingy when you right click /hit an enemy with a whip to make your minions target a specific thing would be nice (idk what the mechanic is actually called)

    I like the idea of using existing enemies instead of summons but I have a couple issues with it.
    1. It seems to have the same problem as summer when it came out and we didn't have whips. You just stand around and do nothing while minions do everything. Idk if whips work with the mod(?) but if not they should. Or maybe going full pokemon/palworld and make it so the player can give commands on the fly
    2. This ties to the first but most enemies when tamed seem samey. I like the different capture spheres added in this video. I'd like it if we could lean more into that and use pokemon elemental logic. So evil biomes monsters could work better against the hollow enemies, jungle vs dungeon, surface vs underground, etc.
    Also a way to maybe buff enemies from certain areas with accessories specific to that area
    3. The natural abilities of enemies like ichor stickers with ichor, or hornets with poison attacks are great. But I'd also like to be able to "command" those. Going back to the first point again, the alternative play style opposed to regular summoner. Throughout the video you had to use the nurse to heal, or just a large quantity of enemies to tank. Would be interesting if some captured enemies could "cast" protection or healing on the player. We would have to decide how many healing minions we'd have compared to attacking ones. It could create different play styles. Someone would prioritize movement and damage while others would tank and heal, etc.
    4. A better selection system of which minions you have and which are released could be nice. Having to suicide minions you don't want currently seems like unnecessary work in the middle of a battle

      - The gameplay is a lot more invoplved that summoner though, as the player actively needs to reposition captures and resummon them during a fight, and the capture sphere in "capture mode" can be used to damge NPCs by throwing it. Adding whip compatibility would likely feel overwhelming :/
      - Enemies do seem samey, because they are. The reason i've been able to override so many enmy AIs with my own in a few days of work is because terraria only uses a handful of them for the vast majority of enemies in the game
      I'm afraid adding types would reduce the player choice even more, and doesn't make much sense considering you'll often capture enemies from a specific biome to defeat the boss of said biome (eg : hornets vs queen bee, demons vs WoF)
      - I will be doing minor changes to projectiles, such as Ichor Stickers projectiles inflicting ichor because it's a very logical change to do (it currently doesn't work because relogic never intended ichor sticker projectiles to hit hostile NPCs) Adding more complex and case-by-case custom behaviours would be a nightmare though, with almost 600 tameable NPCs ... I will add a way to get a NPC to draw aggro, though
      - There should never be a situation where you need to release a specific minion in the middle of battle unless you missclicked. There is a way to release all captures at once (keybind), and adding an UI won't fix the issue since it'll likely be too complex to handle while dodging. I can probably add a "point and click" keybind solution to despawn a specific NPC with the cursor

    could you add a pal box? so you can manage your npc’s.
    also i think wveryn and pigron could have a saddle you can use to mount them? the saddle being a craftable and you have to have the npc to use it.

    I have an idea, you can make it so that instead of capturing mobs for hours they will go on cooldown for some time before can be summoned again? Time depends on mob or you can make it a ingame stat, i hope you'll see this one

    I don't know if you would allow this and I would also understand, but can you make bosses capturable albeit needing a decent pokeball and significant debuffs and damage to it's health. Basically like how legendaries in Pokemon work and just give them a very high capture ceiling or at least make them available for capture post plantera or post cultist. You gotta catch em all after all.

      I feel like i've answered that question a hundred times right now 😥
      I have to manually code the AIs for tameable AIstyles, making bosses tameable would be a headache in terms of coding, balance, and would likely not that good when playing with them in the end

      This is not a bad thing in any mean, but I would rather not try making stuff compatible with it given the headache it'll likely end up being
      I also prefer working with Thorium over Calamity, and thorium devs are my friends

      blood eels are tamable, dreadnautalis is not, hemogoblin shark is not, I haven't tested it but I think zombie mermen should be tamable, and wandering eye fish is tamable

    a few things
    -Did the Ichor... thing, I forgot the name,'s debuff works? I didn't see the yellow light thing on the enemy, Skeleton archer's flaming arrow also doesn't make anything on fire so, hmm...
    -I don't know if this would fit but if you can revive your dead summons after it died ffor a while might be a good way to reduce grinding, though maybe with a lot of cooldown, or you need items for it (could be just one item specifically or like, material specific to that summons but I feels like that would be... a lot) (you could also make the cooldown longer for some really strong enemy i you efel like you need to)

    What version of Tmod are you coding in? I am currently making a mod and one of the things I'm changing about summoners is that all summons will now have hp and can die just like the ones in your mod. I think it would make the summoner more summon based vs just summoning and running away.

    Now, i know tamable bosses wont be a thing, but just as an idea should someone make an add on for it, what if in the scenario bosses are tamable, you can only have one boss at a time in reserves? (Again, hard to say the same for segmented bosses like the EoW, but its still just a thought)

    I present to you in response to the pinned comment from @Haidex_ ~6h earlier, the copypasta (censored/sanitised slightly for the RUclips overlords):
    Hey guys, did you know that in terms of male Terrarian and female monster breeding, the Nymph is the most compatible monster for Terrarians? Not only are the bipedal and relatively mammalian, but Nymphs are also near the Terrarian's height & proportions. This means they're just right in size to handle Terrarian d---s, and with their decent HP value and defence, you can be rough with one. Due to their apparently effeminate biology, there's no doubt in my mind that an aroused Nymph would be reasonably wet, wet enough to mate with one for hours if you wanted. Their initial appearance that they use to lure in unsuspecting Terrarians is also very human, along with their propensity for not covering up with clothing, so it'd be incredibly easy for one to get you in the mood. With their humanoid appearance and humanlike disguised form, they'd likely be easily taken care of in ways similar to how you would take care of yourself. No other monster comes close to this level of compatibility. Also, fun fact, but if you can manage to communicate with one, you can even get it to stick to its disguised form!
