2:27:22 my favorite battle tactic was “hold hands and run!”. Especially how they used to give bonus points to certain units. That made med who started in AoS 2, take a big paus until the final year of AoS 3 when most of that was gone.
Warhammer Weekly and Trapped Under Plastic are far and away the most consistent things I watch on the RUclipss. You are all exemplars of the hobby, and I'm grateful for you. Keep up the great content and congratulations!

Massive congratulations! I agree wholeheartedly that the Triumvirate of Misery (Tzeentch, KO, Seraphon (17 pages of Bound Endless Spells) at the start of 2020 was the nadir of the game balance-wise.

Congrats on the 10 years! what a ride ^_^ You nicknaming tom at the start of episodes makes me think of the tv show Psych which I'm currently rewatching so plz do it again :P I played my first game during the end of 3rd edition and currently I prefer 4th a lot more despite all the proud nails you pointed. Fully agree on them needing to wait for a year for the first BT. imagine if the BT just added to the index, like just new spell lores, artefacts, formations etc. that would be grand. What keeps me hopeful is their reactivity with the battlescrolls

In the battle tactic convo: For me, the best way GW could implemented the Battle tactics would be to actually make them all grand strategies; at the start of the game, both players would choose three from the available list, that they would try to accomish during the game.
Congrats on 10 years! New superchat fund should be for getting Vince a well-ventilated work area so we can enjoy another 10 years. Also, I'm predicting now that goblins on wolves will hit harder than orcs on pigs and Vince's entire head will explode, Scanners style.
I'm hoping they'll actually properly utilize this 'slot in' system they've written into the rules to make major changes with the 2nd GHB. They have the ability to do sweeping changes with rules to correct a lot of the serious issues, it's just a matter of whether or not they'll actually utilize it. I guess we'll find out this summer.
The rule to bring back. The 18 roll on Engine of the Gods in 1st. You take another turn. You have a 5‰ chance to take the tripple turn from turn 1 to turn 2:)
Bummed ive had a busy week and havent gotten a chance to watch this one yet. Just wanted to stop in and say I absolutely love your Paynes grey and Jons Dark plum in the signature serious. Part of my spring cleaning has been a great paint purge. IT hurt but the mental load was getting real. I was originally gonna limit myself to just the Pro acryl base set, but figured hey better give the boys a little love too. I do have to say im finding more use from the plum though. Dont tell Jon. Or maybe do and give Darryl the credit.
I've always been a huge fan of the Moon going across the table. Always felt super narrative even when not very powerful. Definitely sad to see it go. But gitz iz crafty and will figure it out.
I also agree with Vince about manifestations that I see the trend being universal manifestations get a last hurrah in 4th and then by the end of 4th every faction has their own manifestations and in 5th universals go away. Or cost points as opposed to being free like our faction endless spells
The Moonclan +5 control score is actually very meaningful. You can toe 1 gobbapalooza model on an objective and outcontest a monster. Suddenly you have to wipe units entirely to hold objectives. It does make a big difference. Sure grots die fast but few units actually throw 40 damage into a unit of stabbaz with -1 to hit in one fight.
2ed was my favourite but as a casual player 4th is pretty good also, i wont repeat the obvious things already said so ill give my own ABC. [ also grats on the show! ] A: Can we just pretend tomes don't exist and just agree to all use indexes instead? B: Lets just take the command / tactics system from spearhead and put it into the main game. C: Moar spearhead and ravaged coast content please!
Dropped by to say congratulations, and thank you, particularly for the hobby guides Thinking about AoS, I skipped 1st even with the GHB as it felt like a poorly written beta, and I stuck by that. It had interesting concepts, the freedom of army building, and the visual army construction. 2nd got me on board, the rules still had niggles but it was functional, and the armies still could be fun. even though the persistent poor balance* was pretty bad 3rd I was very keen on the rules but within a few months I lost interest in the direction of the game, felt like spam was encouraged and the general GW trend of stuff must die turn 1, plus just truly terrible rules layering 4th I was hyped for it, but the more they revealed the less interested I was, I think the rules construction and format are sound but they have some fundamental core ideas I dislike and that just seems to be making issues for certain armies in particular. Army building is just uninspiring. Plus the business decisions around rules release are just bad. Spearhead sounds good, but I am not buying a silly 40-quid box for a deck of cards. Plus looking at the rules coming out for the new gits, faction abilities just feel like why bother if you cannot present an interesting rule why added that layer; and the units just look bad. Fundamentally I think the 3 year cycle and some core underlying studio principles just don't provide experiences that appeal. The need to get straight to combat, I enjoy how forces engage and that gives flavour to armies. The continual layering of rules, just makes it clunky, why build a streamlined core and stick barnacles on it? * bad balance, I don't mean every army within x% of 50%, I mean terrible internal balance, and some units being just bad. A new unit for Legion just got revealed, it not seeing much love from the competitive gamers, but in the average casual game it will do something it might be niche but it will have its moment in the sun in most games. Genuinely you can pick up any unit for that game (and many others) and it won't just be flat-out bad which is a real risk in GW games
FIrst of all, congrats on 10 years! Yeah! Second, I feel Tom. I thought 4th Ed would be amazing and now I’m barely playing. I’ve never been one to just play what’s obviously good, I was the typical “throw good money after bad” but I always had something, found something that was exciting and fun to me and inspired me to paint and build and theorize and make the best of it on the table and somehow that is gone. Everything is so boring. Nothing really excites me. The obvous stuff is just… well. Everybody can play that, I’m not interested, but there is nothing else. Or if there is, it is so incredibly bad that I don’t even want to waste any time or money on it. I really hoped Armies of Renown would bring the cool stuff, but they are such a disappointment. :D

I tried 40k 9th before I played a game of AoS and therefore I found AoS 3rd much much simpler and enjoyed it, even with battle tactics. I started building and painting in 2nd but only had enough points in 3rd. Another great thing about Spearhead: a month of building and painting gets me in. Would like AoS to work properly at 1,000pts though, just due to short time available for games.
Congrats fellas on 10 years of the show. I'm probably sitting closest to Vince on where I stand on 4th so far but Tom's points aren't wrong. I really like the core rules, e.g. the clarity in the scrolls and order of operations... but as an Ironjawz, Kruleboyz, Slaanesh and Gitz player-looks to be another phoned in early edition book btw-I'm feeling a bit stung by these lazy faction rules. Like, can GW just try harder? I don't know what else to say here. Power level aside, I'm just not going to spend money on these books if they're just copy and pasted index rules with some nerfs thrown in.
I started playing in 3rd. My opinion is 4th is way more fun as a system, but I agree with Tyler that a lot of rules stuff I have to really search and interpret. 3rd was denser, but you could just look up a rule and find it exactly. 4th has like nested rules. I would agree that 4th edition has the worst flavor, and battletome production, and listbuilding that I’ve seen. But the game itself, with phases and reactions, etc. I find much more engaging
Interesting discussion thanks but I ld likely to gently disagree with Tom. To me, it seems like the criticism is that “you can’t have everything you want”, whether that is in list writing or maxing battle tactics. But an alternative view is that ultimately it’s a skill test of compromise. If you do seize the centre turn 1 and that leaves you open to the double, then that’s on you pal! Perhaps the real skill is in the decisions made on the table

Congrats on the 10 years!! That's an amazing commitment I do think it's wild that Tom thinks 2.0 was peak AoS. I started in 2.0, and I almost quit the game because of the rules. And I started post Slaanesh and FEC power. 2.0 was a miserable time for me.
I have to agree with Tom. This is the worst warhammer edition ever. OK maybe WHFBv8 was bad, but not this bad. In AoSv4 it has really become the newbie statement of "double turns aren't fair" During the first era without points or real rules that wasn't the case, through the sin and bin era it wasn't the case, even all of v3, despite the absolute dumpster fire era of battle tactics, the double turn was fine and would make or break the game with good plays (I have won many a game by not taking the double or let the opponent take the double). But now in AoSv4. If you take the double turn, your opponent won't have enough of an army left to make any difference. Why do I care if you have one unit left that is the underdog ? It has really put me off warhammer, and I'd rather play warmachine too. The army list building ok, why not. although it's pretty apparent that some armies have been favoured over others. I wouldn't mind the nerfs if all the armies had the same level of nerfs, but they don't. When I first heard that everything was going to 3" I thought that it was going to replace pile in...But no it's 3" reach and 3" pile in, so any charge gives every unit potentially +6" movement. So roll average 7" charge, some models are going to hitting models 13" so support heroes aren't safe, screens are pointless btw Tom's catchphrase is "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyynnnd"
I completely disagree with Tom. Every edition we have 90% of list building pre selected by what’s the best so i never find that an actual answer. Seems that most of the issues are related to the Elite army meta and that his armies are “bad” The only thing we have really lost is being able to build successful skewlist

Thinking about AoS, I skipped 1st even with the GHB as it felt like a poorly written beta, and I stuck by that. It had interesting concepts, the freedom of army building, and the visual army construction. 2nd got me on board, the rules still had niggles but it was functional, and the armies still could be fun. even though the persistent poor balance* was pretty bad
3rd I was very keen on the rules but within a few months I lost interest in the direction of the game, felt like spam was encouraged and the general GW trend of stuff must die turn 1, plus just truly terrible rules layering
4th I was hyped for it, but the more they revealed the less interested I was, I think the rules construction and format are sound but they have some fundamental core ideas I dislike and that just seems to be making issues for certain armies in particular. Army building is just uninspiring. Plus the business decisions around rules release are just bad. Spearhead sounds good, but I am not buying a silly 40-quid box for a deck of cards. Plus looking at the rules coming out for the new gits, faction abilities just feel like why bother if you cannot present an interesting rule why added that layer; and the units just look bad.
Fundamentally I think the 3 year cycle and some core underlying studio principles just don't provide experiences that appeal. The need to get straight to combat, I enjoy how forces engage and that gives flavour to armies. The continual layering of rules, just makes it clunky, why build a streamlined core and stick barnacles on it?
* bad balance, I don't mean every army within x% of 50%, I mean terrible internal balance, and some units being just bad. A new unit for Legion just got revealed, it not seeing much love from the competitive gamers, but in the average casual game it will do something it might be niche but it will have its moment in the sun in most games. Genuinely you can pick up any unit for that game (and many others) and it won't just be flat-out bad which is a real risk in GW games

Second, I feel Tom. I thought 4th Ed would be amazing and now I’m barely playing. I’ve never been one to just play what’s obviously good, I was the typical “throw good money after bad” but I always had something, found something that was exciting and fun to me and inspired me to paint and build and theorize and make the best of it on the table and somehow that is gone. Everything is so boring. Nothing really excites me. The obvous stuff is just… well. Everybody can play that, I’m not interested, but there is nothing else. Or if there is, it is so incredibly bad that I don’t even want to waste any time or money on it. I really hoped Armies of Renown would bring the cool stuff, but they are such a disappointment. :D
Congrats to Vince and the crew. While i don't know when i started to listen to the podcast i believe i've listened to every one since i started. i do know i found Vince through the hobby cheating vids. Hope everyone is doing well. i'm in a bit of a hobby funk right now.

I tried 40k 9th before I played a game of AoS and therefore I found AoS 3rd much much simpler and enjoyed it, even with battle tactics. I started building and painting in 2nd but only had enough points in 3rd. Another great thing about Spearhead: a month of building and painting gets me in. Would like AoS to work properly at 1,000pts though, just due to short time available for games.
3rd was my favourite. Don’t mind battle tactics or Primal Dice and apart from Khorne, the meta by worlds had really good balance

I'm probably sitting closest to Vince on where I stand on 4th so far but Tom's points aren't wrong. I really like the core rules, e.g. the clarity in the scrolls and order of operations... but as an Ironjawz, Kruleboyz, Slaanesh and Gitz player-looks to be another phoned in early edition book btw-I'm feeling a bit stung by these lazy faction rules.
Like, can GW just try harder? I don't know what else to say here. Power level aside, I'm just not going to spend money on these books if they're just copy and pasted index rules with some nerfs thrown in.
I agree with Tom. I don’t enjoy battle tactics.
I started playing in 3rd. My opinion is 4th is way more fun as a system, but I agree with Tyler that a lot of rules stuff I have to really search and interpret. 3rd was denser, but you could just look up a rule and find it exactly. 4th has like nested rules.
I would agree that 4th edition has the worst flavor, and battletome production, and listbuilding that I’ve seen. But the game itself, with phases and reactions, etc. I find much more engaging

Interesting discussion thanks but I ld likely to gently disagree with Tom.
To me, it seems like the criticism is that “you can’t have everything you want”, whether that is in list writing or maxing battle tactics.
But an alternative view is that ultimately it’s a skill test of compromise. If you do seize the centre turn 1 and that leaves you open to the double, then that’s on you pal! Perhaps the real skill is in the decisions made on the table

I do think it's wild that Tom thinks 2.0 was peak AoS.
I started in 2.0, and I almost quit the game because of the rules. And I started post Slaanesh and FEC power.
2.0 was a miserable time for me.
I have to agree with Tom. This is the worst warhammer edition ever. OK maybe WHFBv8 was bad, but not this bad. In AoSv4 it has really become the newbie statement of "double turns aren't fair" During the first era without points or real rules that wasn't the case, through the sin and bin era it wasn't the case, even all of v3, despite the absolute dumpster fire era of battle tactics, the double turn was fine and would make or break the game with good plays (I have won many a game by not taking the double or let the opponent take the double).
But now in AoSv4. If you take the double turn, your opponent won't have enough of an army left to make any difference. Why do I care if you have one unit left that is the underdog ?
It has really put me off warhammer, and I'd rather play warmachine too.
The army list building ok, why not. although it's pretty apparent that some armies have been favoured over others. I wouldn't mind the nerfs if all the armies had the same level of nerfs, but they don't.
When I first heard that everything was going to 3" I thought that it was going to replace pile in...But no it's 3" reach and 3" pile in, so any charge gives every unit potentially +6" movement. So roll average 7" charge, some models are going to hitting models 13" so support heroes aren't safe, screens are pointless
btw Tom's catchphrase is "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyynnnd"
I completely disagree with Tom. Every edition we have 90% of list building pre selected by what’s the best so i never find that an actual answer.
Seems that most of the issues are related to the Elite army meta and that his armies are “bad”
The only thing we have really lost is being able to build successful skewlist
