Heh HUH HUH HUH Huh Heh I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that was the superior version of the game. I can't believe I still own it after all these years. It's such a great series!
No. The xbox version adds new enemies (evil doll being one), a new combat mechanic (Green orbs), a super long tower to climb with extra enemies and a hidden boss for good rewards, new armors and some added polish. You're thinking of that creepy dude that takes you to the realms.
The only thing bad I can say about the Xbox version is that it's harder but it's still the better version because it has more content and more features in it
I can definitely see a linkage between the King's Field series and Demon's Soul with Onimusha. This is one of those rare games that got fixed-camera-angle action game formula so correct (more than the original DMC imo) Great video, as always!
@Djololo Yes. But the fixed camera angles were made for claustrophobic environments and not for combat. Onimusha is built for both claustrophobia AND combat too, which I think is quite impressive.
Ooo I don’t know about that... the original DMC still holds up quite well. Both of these games are some of my all time favorites. I don’t know which I’d pick between the two...
calling devil may cry 'your average hack and slash adventure' doens't do it justice. it actually has a more complex combat system than dark souls and other soulslike games. at least dmc 3. but you know that right? nonetheless i like the slower and, like you called them, 'careful strategizing' games more. onimusha looks awesome and i will check it out next year then.
They admitted the idea of juggling enemies in Onimusha wouldn't work because it was a serious game, but it would be funny and cool for Devil May Cry. It wasn't what DMC was really based on - it was supposed to be Resident Evil but was too action based instead of survival.
Glad to hear that it's getting a remaster, since for whatever reason I passed on Onimusha. More of a DMC guy, I guess. While I disagree about games like Dark Souls providing more thoughtful combat than most hack and slash/character action games, (DmC 2013 excluded) nice to know that there's still a market for these kinds of slower action games.
One of my most favorite games of all time. Such fond memories of playing it when I was a kid. Lol bought all of the games again a couple years ago and played through them. They still hold up as good fun
I love this game. Part 2 is even better and part 4 (Dawn of dreams) is great too. I'm not a huge fan of the 3rd installment though. I remember I bought this game without even having seen or read anything about it and ended up loving it. I still play it to this day, from time to time.
ah man i remember trying to master the issen counters and just completely sucked balls. it was only until playing Dawn of Dreams where they dramatically increased the window and i was able to do it nonstop. and then i went back and learned it on onimusha 3.
Actually picked this up at a second hand store for a dollar a few days before you uploaded this. I'd played through most of it years ago during the video store golden age, but had to take it back before I could beat it. The second I saw those three-eyed shinobi the memories came flooding back. Time to dust off my PS2.
Honestly speaking, I feel like most games "inspired" by the Devil May Cry series should take a closer look at just what it is they're taking inspiration from. Any game that uses your combo number as a measurement of how good you're doing just falls completely flat to me. These kinds of games always feel repetitive to me because there's no reason to explore the combo system, which often features way more combos than you would ever need or be bothered to remember. You usually just go for the widest reaching, most damaging combos you have, and just use them over and over. And why shouldn't you? The game doesn't punish you at all, you get the same rewards for defeating the enemy regardless of how you killed them so what's even the point of mixing things up if you're just going to put yourself at risk. The stylish rating in Devil May Cry directly counters this repetitive gameplay loop by literally rewarding you for mixing things up, not only by giving you more red orbs for defeating enemies at a high stylish rank, but by giving more red orbs at the end of the mission for your performance. The more varied your moves, the more enemies you hit at once, the more RISKS you take, the higher your ranking, and thus the higher your reward. The game actually encourages risk taking by giving you stylish meter (and devil trigger) for taunting. Speaking of devil trigger, I literally can't think of a single game that has created a more useful powerup mechanic. I will go most of god of war completely ignoring spartan rage, because its so powerful I end up wanting to save it for that time I'll REALLY need it. Devil Trigger, however, usually doesn't change much about the gameplay when you use it. You gain increased damage, health regeneration, hyperarmor, and increased stylish meter gain. Some weapons provide different bonuses or abilities but for the most part the gameplay is mostly the same but slightly safer; you dont become an unstoppable roid god. In addition, not only can the meter be used after just the default three points are charged (meaning you dont have to fill the whole bar just to use it), but you can also EXIT devil trigger to conserve energy and get a quicker start during the next fight. The best part however, is that it's not something you need to conserve, because depending on how well you do you may end up getting a full meter 2-3 times per fight. Devil May Cry understood that all of the combat mechanics should be present at all times, unlike most of the genres other "defining" members. I say most only because I cant claim to have played every hack and slash game, so there may be some obscure title out there that is comparable to dmc (The only other game I can think of is Ninja Gaiden) . Devil May Cry is so far beyond the other genre defining games that I would actually be willing to put it in a different category entirely.
It was an acceptable port tbh. Sure, it didn't support widescreen or Xinput controllers, but those weren't the standard in 2003. The real problem is that it was released only in Asia and Russia.
@@jigendaisuke8962 i disagree in regards to it being anywhere decent. 90% of people had and still have huge frame rate issues, its locked at 640×480 i believe and so many graphical issues on everything i tried to run it on(windows xp,7,8.1,10-nothing changed).
It was a lazy port...no matter how much u try to justify it. I did try on xp even in 2007 and it had visual glitches up the wazoo and 15 fps was the norm.Other games were ported earlier and dont have that many issues as this port. In 2003 i did expect it to not be locked at 640x480 or better be told...i expected at least 30fps if not 60...just saying
I bought the Remaster on Steam 12 days ago & love it, thanks for this Hidden Gem and all your other content, loads of interesting stuff and lots of insight.
I love Onimusha, and Samonosuke is one of my favourite characters. He's so heroic! Between Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2, Silent Hill 2 and Onimusha, 2001 was a special year, for me. I still play all of these games to this day. Usually, IF I'm lucky, there's just one game per year that has that kind of staying power for me, but even that's not common. There's nothing from 2002-2004, for example. And then in 2005/6, we got the updated version of MGS 3, and we got God Hand and DMC 3. These are also games that I continue to play today. Anyways, I can't wait for the HD Remaster of Onimusha. It means that, as an Englishman, I'm finally going to be able to play the game at full 60hz, rather than the slower 50hz that I've been limited to since its 2001 release.
xbox version adds new mechanics and bonus boss, having played both it's the definitive version. they should remaster that or add that stuff to the remaster otherwise xbox version will allways be best.
Loved the soundtrack for warlords. Not sure why everyone swears by the original, they sound a little polyphonic for my taste. Nostalgia goggles off, the new soundtrack is superb. :)
9:28, actually, I read somewhere that the director of the first God of War game was heavily inspired by Onimusha Warlords and tried to recreate a combat like that one. Of course we all know it didn't really turned out exactly like Onimusha. But the weapon leveling system is very similar.
One of my favorite PS2 games, it looks incredible for a game from 2001. I played through it again about a year ago and it's still a great game. A HD version on ps4 would be very welcome.
Heh, I have fond memories of the Onimusha games on the PS2.Also, I recall when I started playing Onimusha 3 for the first time, I beat the first "boss", that rather pathetic Ranmaru Mori, with a chain critical hit. It felt rather fitting that I bested him that way on my first playthrough.
On the off chance that you are still checking these comments, I would like to add a #GemSuggestion, and that is Otogi 1 and 2. I don't know if they are so much forgotten as never known by most in the first place, but they were some quality, non combo-centric action games like Onimusha, with an interesting setting and characters and soundtrack. Nowadays From Software is known for their (insufferably) popular Souls games, but the Otogi series is what I most associate them with. Anyway, I just discovered the channel (from Eyepatch Wolf) and I greatly appreciated the video on PE, as that's one of my favorite forgotten gems personally.
Sigh... I'm going to have to get used to getting old... new generation will never know the things they missed out on by being born late. I understand how yall think these things are forgotten, but they aren't. You just weren't there to remember them in the first place. Onimusha is far from forgotten for me. In fact, I just replayed the third one recently. That opening scene is still as epic as I remember it. My brother and I put in countless hours on those games, even burnt out the disc on the first one. Hell, if you want a good "forgotten" game that will suck your life away till you're suddenly wondering why it's next year, get a few friends , a PS2, and Def Jam Fight for NY. Let the shit talking commence, and try to remember you're all friends. Also, swap those jars around. Onimusha is the OG here. Put some respekt on it!
I prefer the second one. Better and more characters, more locations, 2 additional side quests with 2 other characters and a fun item trade system. You can have 3 different side quest which depends which of the 3 male side characters you gave the most items. The 3 side quest vary a lot and they have different styles and weapons. The side quest with Oichi is mandatory. Nothing against Samanosuke and Takeshi Kaneshiro (The actor which gave him his face) but Jubei and Yusaku Matsuda (The actor which face is used) have more depth. I hope there will be remasters of all Onimusha games including the Smash Bros. like Onimusha: Blade Warriors.
FINALLY someone made a video about that inspired Miyazaki while making Demon's Souls. Im 100% sure he loved this game. He just removed the puzzles and perfected the combat mechanics and....the soulsborne were born. Thanks for this video mate!
What a weird coincidence. I just happened to pick this up a couple months ago. 1:04 The first thing that came to my mind when I first started playing was "Oh no. Tank controls." My second thought was "Shit. Fixed camera angles." 5:43 Unluckily, the cutscenes don't have subtitles. At least you can switch languages whenever you want.
This, Soul Reaver and Silent Hill 2 had two things in common... 1. Clunky Controls and frustrating gameplay mechanics 2. Nothing at the time felt or looked the way they did. Nice video.
What I do is hold down the Circle button to start sucking nearby souls or the lack of souls however as a child I noticed that once you perform this action the enemies become enraged and charges in to kill you. I think this stems from the demons hatred of the Oni clan and they want to cut your arm off so they can destroy the Oni Gauntlet. It's through this rage that the enemy makes mistakes so you can get a critical hit in and it's so satisfying when you time your attacks perfectly. However get the timing wrong and you are dead. I can't wait to do this all over again in January 2019.
2:39 nerd nitpick, but while Onimusha looks like a cool game, any genuine historical element is pretty lacking. It's just about as accurate as "there was a Battle of Okehazama in 1560 and Nobunaga was in it" (the actual history behind said battle was actually p cool, kinda like a Battle of Trenton in Feudal Japan)
Have you eve rplayed "Sould of the Samurai" for PS1? This video ake sme think you would enjoy it. But you give too much credit to Onimusha when you say it laid the foundation, earlier games like Severance/Blade of Darkness were already playing int his space a long time before.
My god I love the Onimusha series. I’m glad capcom is bringing it back with a remastered version and giving it the attention it deserves. Hopefully get a brand new one in the future
There was a game with similar gameplay, back in 1999 - Vampire Hunter D on PS1, I wonder if it's the middle ground between survival horrors and action games like DMC
Before Sekiro and Souls games, there was Onimusha. I unlocked everything in all four games back in the day with different difficulties, even the 500 Dark Realm levels in Dawn of Dreams. I'm almost certain Capcom is going to revive the franchise this year.
I want to leave a comment where it will be read. I'm glad that i found this channel. I love you and Game Maker's Toolkit, because you talking not only about most popular console games. You also talking about PC games, indie games, old console games and DOS games. This proves that you a versitile gamers and love games. In opposite its quite often that you will see a "game designer" or "experienced gamer" who played nothing except most popular stuff not even in previous generation of console, who talking only about mario's and zelda's game design (because he read it from someone) and can't say a single flaw in those games. And thanks to them good but not as creative game developers copying everything from popular games without understanding.
#GemSuggestion Ragnar, i just found your channel and im in love with it. I really like the topics you pick, and how you montage the videos. As for the #GemSuggestion, i would like to see a video about Pathologic. Its a first person novel/horror/survival game about three diferent kind of medics (A bachelor, a haruspex, and a changeling) who have to fight an imperishable plague thats taking over the city in 12 days. The game became long ago a cult classic. Thanks for letting me give you a recommendation. Cheers from Argentina.
Playing it in tank controls before and now playing it with the modern controls feels soo much different. The mordern controls made it more fast pace. 🤣
How is this a forgotten gem? It's a PS2 launch title classic that brought a lot of sequels, got a port with more content on the Xbox and is now getting a remaster. Also calling DMC a "average hack and slash" is insulting. What does that make stuff like God of War or ironically forgotten games like Remember Me ?
I personally preferred Genma Onimusha. It had slightly more content and variety of monsters. I completed both of the Dark Realms in Warlords PC HD, and was disappointed that one of them didn't offer any extra rewards (other than more stuff to kill) whereas, in Genma, I recall obtaining a key or something to get the Ogre armour. Also, where was the creepy ass doll?? Either way, this game is indeed a gem. Sure, the voice acting is pretty bad in the English dub and character models can look a bit creepy at times.
Because of the Beginning of the Video: Severance - Blade of Darkness Look for it on RUclips,i disagree with what youre saying there. Onimusha has nothing to do with the Roots of the Genre, bigger Parts go to many other Games id say. But nice Video anyway,Onimusha is a Forgotten Gem anyway :)
Thank you good sir. I to this day still have my ps2 with all 5 Onimusha games the 1st 3 then the smash lookalike fighter & Onimusha Dawn of Dreams I think that’s the name. Great video & I’ll definitely be getting the remastered. 👍👍👍
Now with the release of Onimusha Remastered, have you seen a spike on this videos views? I am quite curious to know. Also, awesome job on this video and on your content overall. I thoroughly enjoyed this video, your Soul Reaver forgotten gem, and especially the VM Bloodlines love letter!
One thing you failed to highlight was the beautiful soundtrack to this game. Written by Mamoru Samuragouchi, the same guy that wrote the awful Resident Evil PS1 re-release OST, or so everyone thought until it came out that he was a fraud and had been using a ghost-writer his entire career. He even pretended to be deaf, promoting himself as the "Japanese Beethoven". Odd fella but the soundtrack still holds up, I still listen to it often.
Warlords was good, but Genma was better. Not because it was on Xbox, but because it had more content that made it more difficult but still fair and, by proxy, more satisfying.
They goddamn water trap puzzle almost made me give up on this game when I first played it back in 2002. Glad I stuck through it though . It's been one of my favorite series since.
Completed this recently and loved every moment of it just like how it was back in the day. I'm still puzzled why capcom have not released the other as HD remastered version. My favourite was onimusha 2 👍🏾
Wow. The man behind the voice of RagnarRox has every exact gesture, nuance and facial expression I imagined according to his speech patterns. This was a pointless comment. I don't know why I even brought it up.
I remember playing this game on my PS2 back in the day. I liked the melee well enough, but the bow and gun I could not get to work. Then I realized that a certain boss requires the gun to beat, and I gave up and traded my copy in. Never touched the sequels due to fear of the gun aiming. Oh well, my loss I suppose.
To be honest, if it's getting a remake it's not a forgotten gem anymore (I'd love for a remake of Parasite Eve). BTW, you haven't make a Dead Stranding video? I love those, well love your videos in general.
Didn't know they were finally re-releasing it, must have finally reached an agreement with Takeshi Kaneshiro's estate. I still have Onimusha 3 on Steam from the brief period it was available but would happily buy a remaster if it fixed the damn controls and redubbed all the cutscenes. And gave you the option to replace that annoying fairy thing with literally anything.
Dude, you should take a look at the first Grandia game for the PS1. Most of your Forgotten Gems have been my favorite childhood games and Grandia would be another addition to that list! Great work with the videos btw, keep it up
Genma Onimusha was the one I played and it's superior to the original. It has more gameplay mechanics such as the charge attack mechanic (not to be confused with magic charge), which future Onimusha games would adapt, an additional green soul that when activated, regenerates you're health overtime, a new armor for Samonosuke and a creepy freaking OP doll that apppears on certain places only. God that demon doll is so damn difficult to beat, it's like a boss of its own
Holy shit, this was my favorite game as a kid, not to play because I was a little bitch, but I’d watch my dad play and we’d used to play this game for hours on the weekends. So many memories...now I feel old...
I too, loved this game back then and also loved part two. I watched this video last night and had no idea they ported it to Ps4. I bought it, its downloading. Id say Capcom owes you a thank you at the least. Also I have a suggestion for a Forgotten Gem. How about The Thing for Ps2? In my humble opinion it was one of the very best games ever and its extremely underrated.
Feels weird to insult the "simplicity" of hack n slash while showing off a C ranking. In the end, they can be (and are more so with games from platinum), honestly better action games. Also lol at sekiro being slow paced.
Bravo, loved this!
I love you, Ryan.

They admitted the idea of juggling enemies in Onimusha wouldn't work because it was a serious game, but it would be funny and cool for Devil May Cry. It wasn't what DMC was really based on - it was supposed to be Resident Evil but was too action based instead of survival.
A must buy for Onimusha fans!!!!! We need to revive this game to his full glory
A man's life is fifty years --
But a wink in the life of the cosmos:
A dream, or an illusion.
Very well ,very well .....
This hit me hard...😳
This game always struck me as a perfect combination of Resident Evil and Soul of the Samurai (a game that I wholeheartedly Love!)
Onimusha Warlords was great, but the real masterpiece was Onimusha 2: Samurai's destiny. That game was amazing.
Y'all must have missed the funny false hype of when people thought Nioh was an Onimusha reboot haha!
One of my most favorite games of all time. Such fond memories of playing it when I was a kid. Lol bought all of the games again a couple years ago and played through them. They still hold up as good fun
Onimusha was amazing!
I love this game. Part 2 is even better and part 4 (Dawn of dreams) is great too. I'm not a huge fan of the 3rd installment though. I remember I bought this game without even having seen or read anything about it and ended up loving it. I still play it to this day, from time to time.
Hopefully remaster will sell well so we might get rest of the serries or new one
I would die of happiness if an Onimusha 5 set on modern days was announced after DMC5.
@@phobos5323
Never taught about that but oni in modern day could be interesting
But didn't that happened in 3 when Samanosuke time traveled to Paris?
@@David1233445 yeah ,but entire game in modern time could be interesting if done well
Dawn of dreams was sooo cool. I wish it would get a remake.
Demon realm in dawn of dreams is still,to this day,the most awesome and most intense part of any videogame i have ever played
I really enjoyed this; good job. Also, can you please talk about the best game of all time? Otherwise known as "Onimusha 2"?
Onimusha 3 got rid of the tank controls, which I am grateful for. I cant stand tank control for melee combat.
ah man i remember trying to master the issen counters and just completely sucked balls. it was only until playing Dawn of Dreams where they dramatically increased the window and i was able to do it nonstop. and then i went back and learned it on onimusha 3.
damn, had to sell these during hard times a few years ago.
Hope they all get physical HD re-releases, or I'll just hunt down the original ps2 versions
Dude, I loved this series when I was a kid. Especially Onimusha 2. I would gladly pay money for a remastered/remake collection.
"character action games", you mean good action games?
I'm glad its not going to be a forgotten gem here soon.
Onimusha Warlords was also ported to PC in 2003.
And it was a horrible port
I didn’t know that. I did get far on Onimusha 3 on the PC.
He does the first Onimusha, also came out on the original Xbox.......
I bought the Remaster on Steam 12 days ago & love it, thanks for this Hidden Gem and all your other content, loads of interesting stuff and lots of insight.
You forgot The Nintendo switch release man, Loved your Onimusha analysis though
Onimusha is a sweet summer vacation memory for me 👍
OMGosh! About time the released an HD version! I never understood why they never released it again. It's one of the best series IMO.
Loved the soundtrack for warlords. Not sure why everyone swears by the original, they sound a little polyphonic for my taste.
Nostalgia goggles off, the new soundtrack is superb. :)
Love ur voice!
I love u too
9:28, actually, I read somewhere that the director of the first God of War game was heavily inspired by Onimusha Warlords and tried to recreate a combat like that one.
I struggled with this series, but the comparison to Dark Souls makes aense now. Interesting.
Speaking of Souls precursors: Blade of Darkness could count as a forgotten gem, right?
Kings Field, a franchise by FROM SOFTWARE, included many of the design elements that Demons Souls popularized. And it predates Onimusha.
I truly believe that Onimusha Warlords and Shadowman were huge inspirations in equal parts for for dark souls 1
What a weird coincidence. I just happened to pick this up a couple months ago.
1:04
The first thing that came to my mind when I first started playing was "Oh no. Tank controls." My second thought was "Shit. Fixed camera angles."
5:43
Unluckily, the cutscenes don't have subtitles. At least you can switch languages whenever you want.
This, Soul Reaver and Silent Hill 2 had two things in common...
1. Clunky Controls and frustrating gameplay mechanics
2. Nothing at the time felt or looked the way they did.
Nice video.
What I do is hold down the Circle button to start sucking nearby souls or the lack of souls
however as a child I noticed that once you perform this action the enemies become enraged
and charges in to kill you. I think this stems from the demons hatred of the Oni clan and they
want to cut your arm off so they can destroy the Oni Gauntlet.
It's through this rage that the enemy makes mistakes so you can get a critical hit in
and it's so satisfying when you time your attacks perfectly. However get the timing wrong
and you are dead.
I can't wait to do this all over again in January 2019.
2:39 nerd nitpick, but while Onimusha looks like a cool game, any genuine historical element is pretty lacking. It's just about as accurate as "there was a Battle of Okehazama in 1560 and Nobunaga was in it"
(the actual history behind said battle was actually p cool, kinda like a Battle of Trenton in Feudal Japan)
4:03 LMAOOO WHY U JUST STANDING THERE. ik u prolly tryna get the critical attack But damn lmaooo
Forgotten? It's always in my heart.
Hell yeah
I personally preferred Genma Onimusha. It had slightly more content and variety of monsters. I completed both of the Dark Realms in Warlords PC HD, and was disappointed that one of them didn't offer any extra rewards (other than more stuff to kill) whereas, in Genma, I recall obtaining a key or something to get the Ogre armour. Also, where was the creepy ass doll??
Either way, this game is indeed a gem. Sure, the voice acting is pretty bad in the English dub and character models can look a bit creepy at times.
Because of the Beginning of the Video:
Severance - Blade of Darkness
Look for it on RUclips,i disagree with what youre saying there.
I still own and love this game. It was amazing mixing something like RE with a feudal Japan samurai game was just want 12 year old me needed
Awesome video. I've subbed to your channel. :)
I hope Capcom remasters Onimusha 2 and 3 as well.
To be honest, if it's getting a remake it's not a forgotten gem anymore (I'd love for a remake of Parasite Eve).
BTW, you haven't make a Dead Stranding video? I love those, well love your videos in general.
I think in terms of pacing and speed Onimusha is somewhere between Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. I think it's just perfect for me.
"or eldtrich demons, the game pits you against-" They are also eldritch demons, Ragnar, lol
Man Capcom is legit raping my wallet...😖
Resident Evil 2 Remake
Onimusha HD
Devil May Cry V
I'm twisted on this. Mindless button mashing? Even I who prefer to pretend DMC doesn't exist will point out DMC isn't mindless button mashing.
