In this series, we're delving into video game oblivion.
Titles that have, at some point, fallen into obscurity.
Today, we're talking about Blood, Monolith Production's horror shooter and my personal favorite Build-Engine game to date.

Oh my God. Slightly off topic from the video here, but there was a game you mentioned in the video that I never knew the name of for years: Duke Nukem. I used to watch my neighbor play it on his PC when I was a kid. I was surprised to see a clip of it and recognized the visual style. Thanks for mentioning it. Now I finally have a name to that game from my younger days.
I will write this one more time: You have the best content on YT. Trillions of light years ahead of other channels (have not see them all, but you know what I mean).

Flash435 it doesn’t really matter either way. Rock or stone - tho Stein would be more fitting when you consider names with Stein are usually chosen for castles which are built of stone which is basically rock. Beautiful isn’t it.

great video, but fresh blood is not the best version currently out there. lots of people have issues with it (including me - you can see examples on my channel). lots of crashes and small inaccuracies. i would say that currently nblood (which is free btw) is the best and most accurate port.

Oh man Blood! I have great memories of playing this game with my Dad. It was one of the few games we bonded over and spend many nights losing track of time playing bloodbath. Thank you Ragnar I hadn't thought of this game in years.

Not a review really. I don't consider my videos proper reviews, I only pick games I have to say a lot of good things about for this show ;)
I wonder of you have played Strife, another incredible 2.5D game. Might be a good candidate for your next video :)

Strife was great
Really surprised me to hear you praise the accuracy of the fresh supply version so much, considering how much of a travesty it is compared to something like nblood. Here are some of the things Fresh Supply messed up on, and will never fix. They made one patch to address just a few issues some popular youtubers made, then abandoned the game and basically said "too bad lol".
Gill Beasts are too flame resistant to spray can (on the surface)
Spray Cans can easily open cracked walls. In DOS, they were inconsistent, taking 2-4 direct hits to open a wall.
The Butchers require much more Spray Can ammo to kill. They were VERY vulnerable to Spray Can in DOS version tho. (4 units of ammo in OUWB on Well Done, 9-10 units in B:FS)
Spray Cans should shoot through multiple enemies
TNT has a larger blast radius
Voodoo doll autoaim is broken, Caleb shouldn't take self-damage if a character is visible on screen (anywhere above the lower 25-30% of the screen)
Multiple Life Leeches cannot be dropped or used by the same player in SinglePlayer. A dev stated this was to prevent spam in bloodbath, but while that's fair, it should be disabled in SP to mirror original game.
The crushers in Cryptic Passage map08 (CP08) which lead to a dead end do not hurt the player, nor the enemies. In DosBox, these were instant death.
Crushers kill you when you touch the bottom of them even when they are going upwards and sometimes they won't kill you when you are being crushed, you will just become 1mm tall. (E3M5).
Crushers at the end of E4M7 don't kill you but push you under the ground and your weapon goes to the center of the screen.
In the original you can ignite zombies underwater, here you can't.
In the original if you run out of ammo it won't autoswitch to the napalm launcher so you won't die instantly if you are close to a wall
Portals don't work correctly (going into a room via a "portal" while also seeing through the "portal")
You can't reach the life seed and super armor in the secret on E2M1 inside the boat where you have to jump out of the water to grab them. It is just an example but this issue can happen on other maps and places as well.
You can jump to the tommy gun from the water at the beginning of E2M1. In the original you can only jump there from the boat for a short period of time when to boat goes by.
Can get onto things by walking where you could only get via jumping (example: E1M1 sink, E1M2 jukebox, CP02 piano)
Action trigger bug: Bug with Z-Motion sector. Imagine an elevator-platform with 'Trigger On' = 'Push' close to some wall. For example if you are standing on such platform looking at the wall in front of you and press 'E' then in DOS version platform starts moving, but in B:FS it's not. So you have to look somewhere in empty space to make platform move. I believe that is happening because B:FS check the wall for 'Trigger On' option first, and because the wall does not have it the code stops at this point and not check the platform you are standing on. It is easily can be demonstrated on E5L3 (Bodies): step on the elevator and press use. In FS you have too look at the floor the get it moving. In DOS you can just press use and look anywhere.
Action trigger bug: Jumping out of water onto ice with Jump Boots enabled does not work. It should act as a normal jump.
Gargoyle statues should knock back by napalm or dynamite. Also, it should be ignited by napalm.
The doorbell by the front door of the mansion in "The Haunting" (E2M5) doesn't seem to work
The respawn after player's death (USE button) has a weird delay of several seconds. You could respawn in DOS version almost immideately. This can be annoying when you die a lot on harder difficulties.
Post death animation: Tommy gun and Tesla Cannon should shoot a little more after death. Also life leech and voodoo secondary.
Post death animation: If you have a lit dynamite or hair spray and die, it is supposed to stay with you an explode, currently it just vanishes.
Innocents and tiny Calebs turned into flameguys are running towards you, in the original they are standing still.
If you want to shoot with the Tesla Cannon's secondary fire but you don't have enough ammo then it will fire 5 shots while in the original it only fires 4 in this case
When you got the Akimbo powerup it is possible to shoot 2 times and it is showing two weapons even if you only have 1 ammo left
Using a health cheat codes "cousteau", "krueger", and "spork" after you have died, will let you move around the map (without weapons). In the original you could use your weapons.
Cheat code "lara croft" grants all weapons and infinite ammo the first time you enter it in a level. Entering it a second time in the same level should remove all weapons and ammo.
Cheat code “hongkong” should grant full ammo, all weapons, infinate ammo. It currently gives you a medkit
Cheat code "funky shoes" should automatically activate the jump boots it grants you.
Cheat codes "krueger" and "mcgee" sets you on fire but the fire armor doesn't get used, in the original it decrements. In the original you died from "krueger" if you didn't have 200 fire armor, here you will still have 50HP and 100 fire armor when the fire goes away.
When saving the game (not quicksave) user needs to re-type the name of the save every time instead of just hitting enter twice.
Audio is muffled, you cannot set the sound to 44kHz. Although you can hack it via some text file in the game dir
No echo sound effect (same as when being underwater) when the reflecting shots power up is equipped.
Zombie heads make constant thud noise while sliding down a sloped floor.
In Mall of The Dead E4M9 the elevator music is out of sync
Spray Cans make the 'weapon pick-up' SFX, instead of 'ammo pick-up' sound
E4M2 secret Life Seed texture pops out of wall. Doesn't happen in GDX (Voxels clipping through walls when they are supposed to be hidden)
Hanging bodies do not register hitscan attacks when the sprite is Y-axis flipped. (underwater corpses).
Chernobog missiles wrong explosion palette. Should be not orange but grey like in DOS.
Cheogh's eyes are glowing blue when shooting at you instead of being white.
Weird single brick item/texture in the middle of the map (above the big spider in the crypt) in CP06: The Graveyard
No blood when pitchforking the sink "Out out damn spot" (E1M1)
Zoom out to 3rd person view animation is missing
Grey cultist (tommy gun) will switch to a brown cultist (shotgun) after he would have cought fire on land
Fanatics (grey cultists) walk underwater if they kill the player.
Grey and brown fanatics/cultists use prone shooting animation under water which is normal, but what is not normal is that if you hit them, they will use prone animation to move, but not swimming one (check for arm movement between versions)
Sometimes it is not possible to shoot through height differences. On E2M5 in the pool at the dagger key while floating on top of the water when you shoot, the bullet impacts will be in the air. Same issue on E1M3 when you blast the crack between the two cabins near the super secret. When standing on the blasted wall, it is not possible to shoot the enemies standing in the above level, bullet impacts will be in the air. But this is only a visual glitch because in the original you also couldn't shoot those enemies, although there were no bullet impacts in the air.
In the options, weapon bindings should go from 1-10, not 0-9.
Holding down the up/down arrows at keybindings doesn't work, need to press the down arrow dozens of times to get to the bottom.
And in multiplayer:
Jumping can mess up the velocity calculation in online play and cause fall damage. Actually, you don't even have to jump: just walk up on a slope and sometimes you will die.
Custom maps don't work. For the host it works, but anybody else join they only see the main menu. The host can see (and kill) the other players on the map, they are just standing there and doing nothing.
Gibbing intact corpses in multiplayer artificially inflates your kill count
Cannot open doors due to network issues
Thrown dynamites sometimes just disappear
Game forgets that the player is not underwater anymore and Caleb suffocates on the ground
Most sounds don't seem to play in co-op. This is most noticeable on maps like E1M4 (Dark Carnival) where you can pop the balloons. These will not make a sound at all, and gibs will not be spawned.
Cannot hear other players' interactions if the host is not you
Enemies won't turn grey when they have the invulnerability power up
The co-op view is completely missing (by default bound to 'K') so you cannot see where your teammates are and you can't find each other
The "finish him" executions are completely missing
The announcer is talking when you got killed instead when you kill somebody
Entering chat should grab full focus of the keyboard input, cycling through through weapons shouldn't be possible. ie. If you hit "t" and then "123456" it currently cycles through the weapons while you are typing "123456". (Also affects letters bound to proxy or remote TNT)
Why don’t they remake the game with more textures and enemy type.
The levels need more variety and we have better tech so why not?

What I remember most about Blood are the breathing living walls in the Carnival or the Shopping Mall, two very quirky experiences for a shooter at the time.
I love that you open the video with the Misfortune in Morocco level from No One Lives Forever. I love me some Blood so, so much, but NOLF remains my favorite Monolith game.
It's sucks that blood hasn't gotten a current gen console release because those kind of games are my favorite fps games and I'd kill to play Blood on my switch

I still have my 2 disc CD version of Blood complete with the Type O Negative "Love You To Death" video on it.
Not sure it's a forgotten gem when it got a noteworthy remaster over a month ago, and has been covered by many PC-centric channels over the years.

Blood is not forgotten, it just got a remaster by Nightdive Studios on Steam. Just like what they did for Turok 1 & 2 a few years ago.

Huh. Because of my age at the time, I actually forgot that this game was a thing! That said, I do recall people I knew playing it. I was never really really into FPS in general, though I did dabble with classic Doom and Wolfenstien simply because they were available on my home computer. I personally always thought the look of these games for the time was very impressive for the time and still think it is rather impressive to look at even today. I actually thought Blood was Doom when I first saw it until I was told otherwise, but at the same time, I had only seen it played once and can see why it would somewhat fade into obscurity, which is is a shame, especially with what this video touches on. Also really cool to hear things from the developer's perspective too!

I have vague memories playing this game as a kid back in the early 2000's on a cyber cafe. I would never forget how creepy it was, somehow I forgot about the game as time went on for many years until discovering it as an adult a few years ago. It was even better and creepier than I remember it.
they censored blood back in 1996 the the final retail release was less demonic.

Before watching this video (I know it will be awesome anyway), just want to namedrop Civvie 11 for reminding me of Blood in recent months thanks to his Pro Blood miniseries and talking about Fresh Supply. Also can't understate how much I LOVE Blood for its themes, humorous quotes, badass protagonist, and fun use of dynamite as well as secondary fire modes.
More people REALLY need to know about Blood.

I remember back in college taking my copy of Blood in to the club room and wasting hours upon hours playing 4 way bloodbath! So many great memories. This has since remained one of my main games that I install on every PC I've owned since I picked it up way back in the DOS days. Thank you for this awesome vid showcasing my top fave game from yester year. Romero was right. It is the best deathmatch since Doom 2.

I'll give you a pass for calling this one a "forgotten gem", since your explanation is apt. Great video, especially getting the creator on board. However, One Unit Whole Blood was a physical collection in 1998. It wasn't a packaged created digitally for GOG, they took what already existed.
My childhood isn't complete without this game. I have had nightmares playing this game. It always pulled me towards it. That charm is omnipresent. DON'T FORGET THE VOICE ACTOR STEPHEN!

Thank you very much for this material. I was a schoolboy when I first played Blood in 1998. I was playing games back then just for lulz and it was hard to judge the game properly, evaluate its depth, appreciate the setting, atmosphere, level design. But I actually never for forgot Blood and right now I bought an old laptop for retro games and replaying the classics, including blood, right now. This game, honestly, it did not age at all for me, I am playing and getting the joy that I had back then, just right now I can see it from new perspective.

DESCRIPTION OF THE MISSION
(for a Duke Nukem mod\map)
+++ A LIFE OF ILLUSION IN VERSAILLES +++
Unknown russian suburbs, the city is gray and miserable, desperation is
the daily bread for those citizens who are struggling to survive.
But there is something more sinister going on: the Recruiters (men in suit roaming the streets convincing the
young people to be part of the circuit of the Versailles Elite, as they call themselves).
The Recruiters are particularly nasty as they charm the youngster alluring to an incredible life.
The deal is simple: 5 years of luxury life inside a fake Versailles, enjoying life to the extreme pleasures without working, plenty of food and drinks, living the life of the richest.
The fake Versailles is composed by a few blocks: outside gray and decadent buildings, inside The Elite has recreated the Court of Versailles at the time of Marie Antoniette, with huge decorated saloons, grand palaces, luxury gardens and fountans where the people are dressed like eighteenth-century courtiers.
But the deal has a cost, a hefty cost: At the end of 5 years, the people has to accept to die in front of an mixed audience of evil creatures and Elite that is just made of skizoid\maddened men and women, down deep in the belly of the Court of Versailles.
Some will die in private rooms, some in big auditoriums where all sort of technique are used: presses, spikes, guillotines, deep holes, pools of lava, acid, vehicles, etc...
Terrible creatures and a few deranged humans assist the executions cheering and laughing.
You have to terminate this ill-dystopian-nightmare, eradicate the Elite; 1)first killing all the Recruiters (which are heavily armed) that are roaming the city searching for their naive victims 2)and then venturing into the Court of Versailles exploring the beautiful but tragic facade of this luxury world 3) and then finally go deep down where the executions and the horror are taking place.
WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR THIS MOD:
1) INTRODUCTORY WORDS

Recruiters are roaming the decrepit suburbs of an unknown russian city;
they are looking for young people alluring them with 5 years a wonderful life, but in exchange
at the end of the 5 years, they have to die in horrible ways for the pleasure of a deranged group of people: the Elite.
Aliens are complicit in this horror as part of a grand plan to weak the society from inside spreading corruption,
deranged behaviour and chaos.
2) GRAPHICS:
sprites of the Recruiters, texture of the luxury buildings in the style of the Versailles of the eighteenth-century, sprites of the people dressed like courtisans that are roaming the luxury buildings and gardens, sprites of the people getting slaughtered.

Explosions in Duke Nukem are a treat for the eyes; digitized from real explosions are really fitting the mood.
I think a new type of explosion's shape is missing: a very tall flame (at least twice the usual mushroom-shape explosion); a great example of this type of flame is in the intro of the film Blade Runner by Ridley Scott, one of the elongated, sexy, sinuous flames that comes out from the tall chimneys is what I have in mind.
I think it could be a great addition as often the pipe bombs are thrown into a pit or from a ledge of a building and the consequent visual explosions are lost, but a tall flame will give that extra eye-candy, so I'm looking forward to a dedicated modder that will take in my idea;
in this case the sprite of the pipe bomb could be slightly different, like a different colour adding some minor details to change the usual design that everyone knows.

The intro with the new possible name for Forgotten Gems made me laugh as I was wondering how people could have forgotten a game with great textures, music, sounds, voice acting, and a strong identity like Blood 😂
I'm also still impressed by old FPS having weapons spinning on themselves, I find this stylish, especially as it tends to make us forget " they're more 2D than 3D ", this, and the fact they're not 3D from the beginnings, permitted them to have a ton of details, Blood came at the perfect timing, apogee of old school shooters like Donkey Kong Country 3 was for platform games.

The Chibi Ragnar was just so adorable... "It's so fucking good! +-----+" and the Patreon Chamber was hilarious too... this was one of the funniest episodes ever, i just cant stop laughing and smiling while watching, even thou i'm not a FPS type of gal.

im on chapter four just got to some map made of guts, came to yt in hopes to find commentary from the creators of BLOOD while I take a break....doesnt seem to pop up anything but this video...
If you still have the original DOS game (from wherever) there is a fairly recent source port based of eDuke called nBlood that is also pretty damn accurate to the original. If you don't care for the networking support in Fresh Supply nBlood lets you play your original copy on modern hardware with similar accuracy and features.

Blood has one of the best suicide death messages. I was playing on LAN -train level many moons ago.. I decided to jump out the window and "....has volunteered for population control" appeared lool
This is what the Castlevania 64 game was trying to do...some of the scenery in it is great...but the gameplay and aesthetic in Blood works better somehow...

at the time it came out civvie11 was right about how raw it is, now in 2021 its practically perfect and fucking amazing. The only issue left is for some reason they nerfed the shit out of the flame thrower.
I had a shareware a version of this that I bought in a store on disc before I even owned a computer. Eventually got the full version of this and loved the hell out of it, especially all the little Easter eggs.

The best shooter of that era. Which probably makes it the best shooter ever. I haven't had so much fun with any other fps game.
i am happy Blood is finally getting the attention it deserves i think it's way better than Duke Nukem or Shadow Warrior both gameplay and aesthethic wise
Didn’t Nightdive test how well Blood ran in their engine by making sure a popular Blood mod could be easily ported to it, as well?

Bloody is the very best FPS ever! And it won't ever be beaten. I enjoy almost all of the levels, naturally the Train and Carnival are right up there, but so is the snowy maze where you find Jack Nicholson.
I never got to play Bloodbath back in the day, and I haven't had time to play it on the Nightdive remaster either, but I'll give it a go soon.
I only just noticed that I rarely, if EVER, used the secondary fire on the napalm launcher.

My favorite FPS since playing the demo in '98. So fucking good. Amazing weapons, awesome enemies and amazing fast paced combat. My favorite shotgun too.
The old 286 -> pentium (cyrix!) days were awesome, basically every year you could see and hear huge improvements in graphics, gameplay, sounds, 2D to 3D, videos and real actors - there truck load of new things and stuff happening. Some of it worked, some of ti failed miserably - but it was all totally interesting.
compared to those days the modern improvements are kinda "meh". ALso the big AAA games are more stuck than ever in formats and endless sequels and DLC's with very minor improvements. I really miss the older and wilder days. Luckily the indie scene is still very healthy today, and anyhow its not like we dont have games to play on pc :)
