I think something I like about Spider-Man is that you not only get to "be Spider-Man" but you also get to be Peter Parker. Like, balancing his personal life with his secret life is a huge part of Spidey to me. Being forced to solve certain problems as Peter (or someone else) instead of Spidey, having work and social commitments to juggle, relationship issues, etc. on top of fighting crime.
Spidey, IMO, at his best has always been overwhelmed by his own options.
Hollow Knight is a beautiful addition to the background!
Kyle really is unique ; I'm sure we all love all the 9 allies, but Bosman always brings something very personal, insightful and inspiring in most of his opinions. Even in the classic FrameTrap debacle where one person talks and the other has nothing to bring to the conversation, he manages to come up with stuff to say. Love all my allies and each brings something special, but Kyle MVP by far

Until I convince him to play a Xenoblade game, I am glad he was taking part in that conversation and asking interesting things even though he has never played a Xenoblade.
Bloodworth is my favorite... He's like a huge Brain with legs... I love him. He's so knowledgeable. As a side though, some of those Final Bosman episodes are the best stuff on the whole of the internet.

I have been having a hard time in my personal life and getting to just chill and listen to you guys chat about games for a couple hours has been a really therapeutic and relaxing break from that. I definitely have mixed feelings on Blood streaming Mother 3, just because I firmly believe that it is a deeply personal game that you should play for yourself on your own. But man, on the other hand the more people that become aware of this game, the better. It's one of a kind.
EDIT: Also yes, just play the fan-translation, honestly. The guy (Clyde Mandalin aka Mato) who created it is a professional translator and is so ingrained in the MOTHER community...it's as authentic as you can get.
I like how Ben equates Xbox literally not allowing used games or offline gaming to Sony not allowing people to play Fortnite from a PS4 with Switch or Xbox. That’s quite the stretch.
I think he's equating the social reaction and general consensus on those issues. I do agree with you, in my opinion they aren't nearly on the same level. Cross-play and account transfers are not NEARLY as egregious as the entire used/offline argument from the beginning of this gen. Yet, I had an argument in twitch chat the other day wherein 1 community member was adamant that a lack of cross-play could kill the Playstation 5, which I think is just ridiculous and short-sighted. I think it's is an even greater stretch honestly, the cross-play thing is so negligible.

The comedy bits literally vanished in the very next Direct after Iwata passed. No more puppets, mega64 crossovers, etc. I think leadership matters. It's easy to think of a company like Nintendo as a monolith but at the end of the day the people in charge set the voice of the company and with the new leadership, like Kyle said, I don't think the personality will be coming back to the Directs. :(
The puppets were done because Iwata was very sick at the time but he didn't want people to worry about him so they went with the puppets.
I don't know... that smash bros. Direct revealing Simon Belmont and King K. Rool were hilarious. Not every iwata direct was light hearted and comedic either. We will see.
@Caio Coelho This doesn't make any sense. To suggest a president of a company has no power over the direction of a marketing campaign for their biggest products is tough to swallow. Iwata was one of the most hands on president in gaming history from the Iwata Asks to the famous banana bit. Diminishing his contributions now that he has passed really feels a little yucky to me.

To be fair WW does feel noticeably rushed and unfinished in its second half. Honestly I think it would have a chance at being the best Zelda if not for those reasons. It's still better than SS though.

I don't know if I agree with the sentiment that every Zelda game is great. SS is overly bloated to the point of becoming a chore and PH is rough all around. But yeah, I agree that WW is weaker than some may be led to believe. It's got a lot of great points but its flaws really start peeking through on replays.

The difference is that SS never lets go and doesn't have the same sense of flow. SS feels like it takes hours to do anything and the constant reuse of boss fights and areas give me the impression that they were struggling to think of what to do with the series at that point. It had a pretty cool story and strong dungeons but everything in between was sub par. I actually feel like it would've benefitted from being a shorter game. The length didn't feel justified because it didn't accomplish enough in that given time. I still like SS as a whole but it's not a game I've ever felt compelled to replay because of those reasons.
As for PH I think it just failed on all accounts. Controlling everything with the touch screen was a neat idea, but it ended up being questionable in practise. Sailing was much more restrictive, WW's beautiful art style just didn't translate to the DS leading to the game looking visually unappealing and revisiting the same dungeon over and over again felt unnecessary. It was one of the most disappointing games I've ever played in my life.
The really scary thing about roms and game preservation is that some of the Virtual Console games on Wii and Wii U had headers that made it clear they were just downloaded from one of these websites and put into their own emulator container and sold. Meaning even Nintendo themselves don't have copies of some of their own games. That's absolutely insane to me.
Wasn't that only Super Mario Bros.? Like I might be wrong, but I always interpreted that as one person at NCL was just being lazy and downloaded a rom online, I haven't heard about any other games like that.
Final Fantasy VIII is awesome, hopefully they release it soon.
Halo 2 was XBL's killer app but they had a solid lineup in the years prior with Mechassault, Crimson Skies, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Rainbow Six 3, and others.
Also, the Hyperkin Duke controller is in stock at the Microsoft Store, Gamestop (Halo Green only) and Fry's for $70.
And the Team Ninja suite of games, Dead or Alive 3 and 2 Ultimate and Ninja Gaiden were all out before Halo 2. For my money, these were the best games on the system.
Love the shout out for HLTB (how long to beat). I've been using that site for years and never talked to anyone who used it and never even heard it mentioned by any video personalities.
The fortnite Sony thing is not really about fortnite and more about cross play as a whole- what does Sony have to lose you ask? If Sony opens up cross play on fortnite then they effectively have to open up cross play on every multi platform game- and that does hurt their bottom line.
I have both Xbox and PlayStation- and I honestly would prefer to buy games on the X but often buy them on PlayStation as my friends are on PlayStation. PlayStation is ahead of Xbox 2-1 so the draw of friends is significantly stronger on psn. Breaking down that barrier would not be a smart business move for Sony.
Now while that is a specific use case- that analogy is true. In that scenario Sony opening cross play would directly help Xbox and hurt Sony as I would buy all my multiplats on X moving forward. Also, once the doors are open, they don’t get closed. I don’t like it but I do understand it. It’s all about protecting the lead... you think Microsoft would’ve been gung ho cross play last gen??
Exactly, yes. But I just need to point out one more huge effect of those financial reasons you presented so well... Sony NEEDS financial stability to also be able to continue INVESTING IN EXCLUSIVES as much as they do! Imagine how much would that program suffer if not only they loose serious amount of money but also security of future income... NO MORE RISKS TAKEN to give us games like Horizon or Dreams or revamps of GoW... Oh, who is so dumb to think that Microsoft or Nintendo would ever give us better games if they get crossplay then if they do not get crossplay... They woul care even LESS about competing ... And who would be so shortsighted and selfish to sacrifice or compromise Sony ability to produce exclusives just for sake of one dumb shooter fab like fortnite.

I see the complaints as people simply wanting to have something to complaint about each of the Big Three. PS is cross play, Switch is the online, and Xbox is its games lineup. People will always find something.

@Brendan Leahy & @Phaedrus Socrates - Thank you to both of you perfectly summarizing why Sony's slow acceptance is ultimately choosing lesser of evils (at least for right now). ...And I do think there are some benefits for certain games & genres to have cross play, especially when they will only strengthen the community- like with Fighting games. However, personally given the choice when speaking "across the board", about future games like "Death Stranding" and "Ghosts of Tsuhima", versus playing any casual multiplayer shooter with other consoles- I choose the former.

The reason the NES controller is only for sale for Nintendo Online subscribers is because they’re one usable for the NES games that come with online. They’re useless if you don’t have online, therefore they don’t want people to buy them and get angry when they learn they can’t use them for other games

I definitely understand letting the new Tomb Raider sit because of other games. I really liked the other two Tomb Raider games, but I have so much else to play right now that I doubt I will look at it for a few months at least.
I love the Torna DLC. Its everything good about Xeno 2 with better characters and combat. The new battle theme is also glorious and one of the best battle themes ever.
I agree with cows points about getting beat by a villain in Spiderman and then learning how to beat him. This actually happened to me on one of those side bosses but I would really like to see that happen as a story beat as well. My butt got thoroughly wiped and then the game loaded back up and this villain taunted me with a phone call

Regarding Howlongtobeat - I used to use the site a ton but I've actually started avoiding it completely as part of my media blackout on games I plan to play. I even avoid review scores when I'm hard in on something - I like to just gauge positive or negative general reception and then experience it all on my own if possible. I kinda hate knowing about how far along I am and when the story will end. Nothing is better than going through something you love and then finding out that everything gets flipped on its head and gets even better - SotN upside down castle style or going through seasons in The Last of Us and being amazed at each new season
i used to do the same, even track all time played. it was difficult but i dropped that habit and i noticed how much more i started enjoying game.
Ben, I recently replayed Half-Life 2 having that same feeling of being scared it wouldn't hold up to my perfect memories of it... and let me tell you I had a fkin BLAST! lol... the Gravity gun is god tier especially with the physics in the game connecting with the brilliant playground of levels that use everything to kill your enemies with. So good :) I recommend streaming it!
That exclusion of 8..... I standby the fact that its still holds up in this era, more than 7 I'll say. Sucks that its being ignored by SE :(
One reason for the NES Controllers Special Offers is that they supposedly only work for NES Games which are only available with the online service. However there is no reason why they shouldn't make it work in general for games with fewer inputs.

Not hypocrites, necessarily, unless I missed something. F2P and crossplay are two different issues. You could argue that XBox is the only version not F2P, but that Sony is the stubborn one on crossplay.
I don't see how they're hypocrites, MS has never claimed to be free online.
People see it the sense that they pay themselves on the back in being pro-consumer but also does something anti-consumer as well. If Sony and NT doesn’t require a sub to play F2P games why does MS does it is the argument.
Mother 3 is a masterpiece, so glad Blood is streaming it currently and spreading the love for the game.

I think the one thing that has to be kept in mind about Directs is how Nintendo's situation has changed in the past few years. Up until the Switch, Directs did stay "Direct", even in late 2016, but up until Switch, Nintendo had no third party support, but now that they do, the way they have to format Directs has changed. When Nintendo only had 12 games to fill 35 minutes, they did have to spend a bit more time on each game, and its not that they didn't want to still use the old "Direct" style in terms of speaking directly to us, its much more that they can't now. Nintendo needs to sell third party games now, Switch is a platform not just a Nintendo system, and the last Direct had over 40 games in it, and they couldn't spend too much time on each. While I do miss the more personal and, "direct" form of Directs, Nintendo still needs to sell games on Switch and give third parties more time that they used to, and I would rather they use this format that allows them to cover 40 games in 40 minutes if it means selling third party games. Nintendo still has game focused directs for more personal scenarios, like the Smash one last month or the Dragon Quest and Xenoblade ones from last year. I'd also rather this format if it means giving more respect to third parties, Nintendo needs to get over this weird hole they have dug themselves in since the N64 with third party relations, and while the 3DS definitely helped, if this is the way they need to really fix their relations, then I'd much rather it at the cost of how personal the Directs are, no matter how important that was and still is.
Also Katamari and Final Fantasy were pretty cool.
I would like to point out though that I do not at all think this was a Direct made to tell us about online. That feels to me like something that was added in very late. They told us nothing new about online that we didn't already know. Bandai Namco and Square Enix wanting to make a few announcements before TGS likely had more pull on the timing of this Direct than online.

The change in Nintendo Directs was, from what I've seen, ironically caused by their systems being more popular. The Year of Luigi direct was one of the funnier directs, but also had way less games to show off. Now, we literally have to go at a breakneck pace to get to 35 minutes, all the while announcing games that are reveals for OTHER companies. Not only that, but several people I know are glad that the Directs have this quick pace, because they just want to see games. Not that I don't think they can't be silly, they just don't have the time or the audience for it. I do hope they strike a better balance, but I understand why there hasn't been.

Regarding the NES controller, why would you want it without Nintendo Switch Online? They are only compatible with the NES games as part of the service as far as we can tell. It does not seem like you will be able to use them for any other game as they are not joycons. If you could just buy them without the subscription, a lot of people would buy them thinking they can use them with any games and then realize they don't work.

I use emulation for games ive never played then after i go out and buy it from my retro store. The problem with that is Nintendo doesnt see a profit either way since the sales from the retro store are used and i want to own the physical product.

If you are speaking on it's difficulty then could you make sure to mention what difficulty you played on? Whether you are playing on easy or hard is relevant.
I personally don't think that context dialogue in Spider-Man makes the side activities any less repetitive. It's no better than your average open world Ubisoft game. Considering how short the main story is, I get the feeling they had to copypaste a lot in order to pad out the length.
Also, was wall-crawling awkward for anyone else? That's my only big complaint with the gameplay side of things.

With regards to the Hotakke, it might be a message to the investors of Sony. If Playstation opens up cross-play, then it might signal to the investors that Sony themselves are not confident within the Playstation brand in bringing in new consumers. Just a theory and I don't support this POV, but just a thought

Two words that seemed forgotten in this episode: fiduciary duty. I don't like the idea of twitter mobs forcing entertainment companies to do things that go against their interests. I would hate to see a twitter mob forcing EZA to make a damaging decision. The relative sizes between the two organizations don't seem relevant enough, in my opinion.
I usually have 3 games i play at any time.
One rpg, one action game and a multiplayer game.
So right now I'm playing Persona 5, Diablo 3 and Overwatch. Those are the games I'm playing and of course ffxiv. But ffxiv will be the game i play forever so I'm not stressing over that.
Once i beat persona 5, in the far away future, I'll probably start playing a western rpg to take a break from jrpgs. I'm thinking about divinity original sin 2. Hopefully it'll be cheaper by then...

It's more about progression and a sense of ownership over your avatar. If you put 200 hours into Fortnite on ps4 and reached a really high level and unlocked a bunch of cool costumes (with in game money or rewards, NOT microtransactions), it really sucks to have to start over from level 1 with a default avatar. It sucks so much in fact, that most people would rather just continue playing on ps4 instead of starting over just to play with their friends on Switch or Xbox. Sony knows this and is taking advantage of it.
Another example would be Monster Hunter World. 6 of my friends bought it when it came out on ps4 and played the hell out of it for a few months, and eventually stopped playing. PC version rolls around and I ask them if they will buy it on PC. All of them say no. Why? Because theyd have to start all over again. However, a couple of them said they would buy it again and play it on PC if it was possible to transfer their character from ps4.

We need a Half Life 2 settle it with Ben and Kyle. WE NEED IT! Or you know it would be dope. It totally holds up, specially if you play it after a heavily scripted CoD campaign or a shooter like that. There just aren't games like that anymore (I guess because they would be too niche or expensive) The closest thing are Wolfenstein but even those have experience points, chapters, cinematics and Hubs.

The first time I played Half-Life 2 was on Xbox, in fact I got an Xbox in anticipation of HL2, and while I absolutely loved the game, it ran horribly, like 10-15 FPS. Of course back then frame-rates weren't a conscious concern to me.
I think Nintendo now likes to try to save developer interviews for their treehouse live events... I also think you guys aren't taking into consideration what the direct Would have been if they didn't have to postpone it for the Earthquake. Most of the event was leaked in one way or another so of course if you go in already knowing everything the even is going to seem a bit lackluster.

I got some of the FFs (VII and VIII included) on steam and they are not great ports, some of the coments about 8 talk about how expecialy bad the songs and general audio where treated. Maybe that's why they skiped for now.
I'm so with Blood on Wind Waker being last, it was incredibly boring, I don't think it's just the worst 3D Zelda, I think it's a bad game. For real, it pushed me to the verge of sleep more than once. There are good sections and even ones that I love, such as revisiting the OOT castle, but there's just so much boring content before and after that. I played the Wii U remaster, that was the first time I played WW.
The golden country community thing makes me feel like a bracer again.

PC is the best place to play because you don't have a 60 fps limit.
I feel like playing games while listening to podcasts and whatnot is doing a disservice to the medium. I mean, what other art form would you treat like that? There are certain games and types of games where I do understand this, but in general, I cannot recommend against this enough. The very idea of doing that tells me that either whatever you're playing is failing on an atmospheric level, or you're not treating it with the attention it deserves.

was it the triforce hunt at the end? That's what it was wasnt it. You know, sometimes in an adventure the things you need aren't conveniently on the path you take and you've gotta sail around lookin for maps. Really didn't mind it on my first playthrough, but ill admit that it's a bitch on subsequent playthroughs
Final Fantasy IX also auto levels, still the best!
