Hey FreeGang! Thanks for tuning into another food shopping and cooking video!
Today we have a special budget cooking challenge, where we see who can cook the best meal using only Asda Just Essentials. Between us we all make a budget breakfast, lunch and dinner to see whose is the best cheap meal, considering we have limited ingredients from Asda Just Essentials haul that we got in one of our previous Asda shopping video.
This is the first time we have done this challenge. We make these videos for anyone looking for money saving tips, shopping on a budget, cooking tips, cheap meal ideas, vegan food ideas, eating on a budget anyone conscious of the cost of living or their financial situation, or anyone just trying to save money!

Jo Jo is becoming a great cook
He really is! That idea for the mushroom sausages was inspired. It’s wonderful that his parents are teaching him cooking as part of his homeschooling curriculum, as it’s such a valuable life skill.
Hello family. LOVED THIS VIDEO. So fun! A couple things to keep rising… sausages are such a wonderful idea. Try adding a tiny bit of sage and fennel seed. Love you JoJo. You are so creative. Boba, pastry is made by crumble in flour so that when it hits heat, they explode and make it flaky. Try using All Veg Crisco and ALWAYS have all things super cold otherwise it won’t make layers. It will just all mix together like a cookie dough. Roll in half putting water or milk to “glue” the edge then use fork. The part you missed was to put knife slats on top for vents so when bubbling has somewhere to let heat out. I am so proud of you all. That was great!! I love how creative you all are. Hey, Bob. If you are using a soft spread for pastry, it helps if you freeze the spread first and grate it into the flour. Keeping everything as cold as possible, including your hands, always helps in making good pastry I find. Resting the dough helps the gluten to form and makes it less likely to crack when you roll it.
You can chill the water with a few cubes of ice. When you are adding it, only do a few tablespoons at a time. The goal is to use as little water as possible to make the dough come together. Lastly, let the pastry get really chilled. The science behind it is that when the cold butter/oleo/spread begins to melt it creates air pockets that will give your dough lift and cause it to be tender/flaky. Awesome job for a first go!

Oh Jo Jo, my heart sunk when I saw you put the potatoes in the blender. Allay drain your potatoes a put them back in the pot and add your milk and mash by hand or use a hand mixer. This is how we all get better in the kitchen, learning from our mistakes. I love seeing you cook. 😊

Top Tip for lovely smooth mash that doesn't turn to a paste (like it does in a blender) use an electric whisk instead.
Also, for a sausage skin, use rice paper, wetted and rolled around the sausage.
AND, if you are using cheap bread for breadcrumbs, you get a lovely texture if you toast the slices befor putting them in the processor.
@tonycasey3183 I use an electric whisk when I mash my potatoes. I found the processor made them too smooth. I like the idea of wrapping the sausages in wet rice paper. If ever I make sausages I'll try it
I have to say bob and katie you have brought jojo up to be a very polite and well mannered young man and what's better is he can cook I have a partner who is 40 and has never cooked a meal for me in the 16 years we have been together

In America, flapjacks are another name for pancakes--often in the southern part of the country. And I have a friend who is a pastry chef. Her program focus was mostly on elaborate cakes with fancy decorations.

I seal my pastry with water. Just a slight bit. Then come in with the sealing of the fork. This could help you with it. ❤️

Hey Bob. For the most amazing pastry, 6tbsp cold water, 6tbsp of butter or alternative (make sure it doesn’t have a high water content) 1 1/2 cups of plain flour, 2tbsp olive oil and 1/2 tsp salt.
Well done jo jo 👏.. tip for bob if you make pastys again to stop them bursting put a small hole or a cross in the top of the pasty it will allow the steam to escape and stop them bursting 😊.
A pastry chef is a person that bakes desserts and bake good.

Jojo with the mash you could have added couple more potatoes to thicken it but next time don't add water till after the potatoes have been blitzed and add only a table spoon water at a time as needed

I really like these cooking videos. I often make what I call fridge-dregs meals with whatever is left at the end of the week and your videos are quite the inspiration. JoJo's addition of mint sauce is going in to my next mushroom bangers - I use similar seasonings, but with onion and sage added, but I am definitely switching the sage with mint sauce next time.

before you seal the end of the pastry put a little water on it & then seal it with the fork, then poke the top to let the steam rise out of them

Bob use milk to seal the pastry also if you had added some of the mushrooms they would have made the gravy a little thicker by absorbing it

You normally put the ice water on your fingertips and pour a tiny bit at a time till it is not sticky and you stretch it and doesn’t rip that called window pane test and yo see if it is proofing do the poke test you poke if slowly springs back to you or it doesn’t spring back at all it is done proofing and if the dough collapses you might be able to save it if you re-shape it and it doesn’t collapse again if doesn’t collapse again get doing the ice water method and the cold water makes the flour form gluten strands and then that when you would the windowpane test when the dough isn’t sticky. Hope this helps

Hello Extended Family in the Comments and our three intrepid contestants Kathie, Bob and JoJo. I see my fellow reactioneers have covered all the cooking tips that came to mind......except one!. when making pastry dough,, plant based fats make the dough very tender (animal fats make them more durable). So in a Vegetarian context, I think rather than Pasties (we call them Turnovers in the US) they would have been steadier as a Pie. when I make individual pies I use ramekins or muffing tin. cut two circles, a larger one for the base and a smaller one for the top. That way you can have the gravy in the pie and, as a nice commentator below suggested cut some holes in the top so that it doesn't explode. And because of the delicacy of the dough making individual pies makes more sense than making a large one. I will be dreaming about "Bob is a pastry Chef!!!" It's a great start Mate.
A note for JoJo. Being a Chef is very hard work. I started cooking at 12 myself but when I looked at the professional cooking world I realized it wasn't something I wanted to do. So I worked on my cooking talents and simply made other folks happy, in my family, friends, and doing my own dinner parties. Best of luck in considering your future.
