So it's clear that Dimps made this version with the Wii in mind and then reduced it as much as possible to work on the PS2: - The texture quality of the PS2 version is ridiculously low, probably because it has much less RAM than the Wii. (0:05 and 0:51 on the floor) - There are no screen space reflections in the PS2 version, in fact there are no reflections at all. (0:12, 1:43 and 1:59) - Sonic's spikes are static on PS2, on Wii they move. (0:22 and 0:35) - Light does not reflect off the sea in the PS2 version. (0:30) - Some graphical effects were simply removed from the PS2 version. (0:38 and 0:51 ~ 0:55) - Shadow quality has been greatly reduced on PS2. (0:44) - Some places just don't have shadows on PS2. (0:48 and 1:34) - Removed Eggman and the glass is not transparent in the PS2 version. (1:04) - The Wii version makes extensive use of normal mapping to lighten and enhance textures, this has been completely removed from the PS2 version. (1:12) - Some stages had reduced details and objects removed on PS2. (1:22) - Some enemies have drastic polygon reductions on PS2. (1:31) - The Bloom of some stages has been completely removed from the PS2 version. (1:54) In short, the PS2 version has seen a drastic reduction in quality in every way, plus I remember well that it has much longer loading times compared to the Wii and performance issues in stages like Eggmanland. It's like playing an HD remaster on Wii. Even the animations and physics for Sonic's spikes when moving are better. Textures has masks and lightning effects on Wii in comparison to the PS2 version as well. Not to talk about the water effects or the fact that the Wii version plays at better resolution at 16:9 screen ratio, while PS2 has a lower resolution and a screen ratio of 4:3.
I think the concept of the boost in the SD version (going very fast but very not controllable for 2 seconds) is way better then the HD boost (you can boost any time you want with little to no drawbacks)
gameplay wise the wii and ps2 versions of sonic unleashed are virtually the same And the ps3 and xbox versions of sonic unleashed are the same gameplay wise with the xbox version having slight ui elements changed
The Wii version is infinitely better, besides having a better frame-rate (and support for 16:9 Widescreen) the 3D models are better and the textures too. Even though Sonic Unleashed is the most beautiful Sonic game on the PS2 this version was downgraded a lot, even the shadows and some graphical effects were removed so that the PS2 could run. Anyway... when I was younger I always wondered if the PS2 version could run on a Nintendo 3DS, it would be really interesting to see a port of this game to the console (especially because we didn't have a ''Full 3D Sonic Boost game'' for the 3DS)

Also someone in the coments said the PS2 ver. loading screens are longer, is that a joke? the Wii is the one that takes longer, it's annoying. And PS2 ver. had performance issues? I never had any performance issue, and I have both versions.
I grew up with the ps2 version of Sonic Unleashed. I loved it and still do. Imagine my shock when I discovered the HD versions that were the original versions too. I now also love the HD version too.
To be honest, the Wii version is better because the graphics are beautiful compared to PS2. The Wii had special graphics that the PS2 couldn't handle, and the Wii version had support for widescreen.
Wii version was already a massive downgrade from the HD version (although to be fair many of the levels were so different from their HD counterparts even thematically and conceptually that they're both worth playing for different experiences) - and then the PS2 version is a massive downgrade from the Wii version. That being said I'm still glad the PS2 version exists. I remember when these games all first game out there were still a number of last gen holdovers who were clinging to their PS2s and on all the forums they were very happy they still got a port of Sonic unleashed and that it still played pretty well despite the visual downgrade and they didn't feel they needed the HD version.
I think what’s interesting is that the 2 looked like they had 2 different light engines. Not just downscaled on the PS2 like everything else (Although it’s still a downgrade) the Wii version looks like it has dynamic lighting. While PS2 is more static lighting. Especially since PS2 to my understanding couldn’t really do dynamic lighting. Or at least not very good dynamic lighting. There is actually reflections of light on Sonic and reflections on the water. While the PS2 version doesn’t have that.
Yeah, but the PS2 version still loses because 3D models have less polygons and textures are much lower quality, the water doesn't even have a reflection on the PS2 version of Sonic Unleashed.
The PS2 one looks so much better not only because of that damn light always reflecting on Sonic's model, but also because the quills look so much better when they're pointing down. The Wii's model's quills look like they're being forced to stay up.
I played the PS2 version of Sonic Unleashed. He is too damn fast, slippery, has no animation when moving, and is uncontrollable. Also the last area of the Eggmanland stage, you have to pretty much crawl to the end due to Sonic going to fast! And the Werehog levels punish you to where if you fail, you have to start over EVERY SINGLE EGGMANLAND LEVEL!
I imagine the PS2 version was rushed for release. Sure, the Wii version should look quite a bit better, but the PS2 did not have to look that much worse and lose out on so many details. Sonic's quills don't even change when he's running. Like, really? You're telling me they didn't have the available memory to keep that in? I mean I prefer the way it looks cause it looks kinda weird and unnatural on the Wii version, but still, his arms clip into his quills, so it's not great. But then again, the levels are gigantic and look fairly nice either way, so it's still impressive what they achieved.

Despite the DualShock 2's analog not receiving proper sensitivity tuning in this game, the longer load times, graphical downgrade, and slightly worse performance, I do like playing the PS2 version. I can play with a wired controller that doesn't use the triggers for punches (like the Gamecube controller does), since the Classic Controller on Wii relies on the Wiimote's battery life (and is inherently wireless, meaning a teeny bit more latency). I mean, playing the Wii version on Dolphin with a modern controller using a CC configuration slightly mitigates the issue, but you can't do that with a CRT TV setup (where the graphics can shine) without pricy downscaling solutions. (Or maybe just buy a PC CRT.)
The PS2 version has a better lighting engine, but the Wii version in general has more features in terms of graphics. However I’d pick to play the PS2 version instead because the PS2’s game library is so much better than the mediocre library of the Wii. That said, both are inferior to the HD versions on XBox 360 and PS3.

Just port ps2 to psp already...
Personally i prefer the ps2 version for the controls (i hate motion controls)
Just use a Gamecube controlar or classic Wii controller
Even tho the quills are animated better on the Wii, I think the lack of shading on the quills makes them look better.
I had no idea ps2 was worse
Ps2 version is more nostalgic
Nice
everyone porably picked wii as the better one lol
I like Wii
the ps2 version looks way better, the wii version had some better lighting but sonics quills look horrible in the wii version, and when you are gonna be looking at them the entire game, it kinda sucks
PS2 looks nasty and the quills don’t even move and no Quick step effects and more (I have a fat PS2 still after all these years).
why do i remember wii being worse
wii team
I think the Wii version should’ve been a somewhat scaled down version of the Xbox and ps3 version
It’s a whole new game
after seeing Sonic Colors, I think the Wii could've totally handled a 480p version of the 360 game.
Wii good
even tho i like pöaystation more wii looks better
ps2 is overrated tbh. Wii is better. (Just my opinion)
how can the PS2 ver. be overrated, most people only know the Wii ver. exist lol
are you talking about the game versions or the consoles? because this isn't a comparation between consoles lol
Of course Wii is better
The ps2 version is my least favorite version
Wii version is better.
N❤❤❤❤❤❤
tfw you realized you grew up with the worse version of Sonic Unleashed.
PS2 10 000 TIME BETTER!!!!!!!!!

Even having both versions I thought all this years the only difference was Sonic's model and the illumination, I think it goes to show that small details like those don't really matter if you are going through stages at mach 5.
The extra touches on the Wii may be nice but I still prefer the PS2 version because I really think the Sonic model it uses is godlike (him being dark blue, and the way he runs being a being a little more crouched and his spikes looking more natural being more separated) , in the Wii ver. he looks like shiny plastic, everyting looks like shiny plastic thanks to that bit of glow effect and illumination, I like that the PS2 ver. it's darker with a more natural ilumination, looks more organic to me, also ofc playing with the PS2 controller is way better than the , and that blur effect for his sidesteps on Wii looks terrible.
Also someone in the coments said the PS2 ver. loading screens are longer, is that a joke? the Wii is the one that takes longer, it's annoying. And PS2 ver. had performance issues? I never had any performance issue, and I have both versions.
