Crimson Carnival Day Wii is one of the best final stages in the entire series. Right up there with Final Fortress, Death Egg, and Asteroid Coaster. It is truly the culmination of everything you've learned. It's not overly padded like the HD version, nor is it tedious, It's thrilling the entire way through. It doesn't have that many alternate paths but it doesn't really need them, because the main path is a ruthless 5-minute long gauntlet that truly tests your control of Sonic. The music is simultaneously disturbing and erie, and motivating at the same time. There was nothing more satisfying than getting that S Rank
Absolutely, couldn't agree more, Eggmanland Wii is probably my favourite 3D sonic level period, it's so damn good man, and when I finally got S, nothing can match that incredible feeling
It’s funny how the Wii version actually got way better reviews than the HD one back when Unleashed was first released. You’d never know from how they’re treated by fans lmao
Back in that time unleashed for Wii came with a bonus disk that introduced me to Sonic underground and was praised for having polish that the older systems didn’t.
I always considered Unwiished to be a game primarily limited by its hardware rather than by any of its design elements (at least for the day portions). Considering that the Unleashed Project is more or less completed for Generations, I'd love to see these stages given a proper go with the Hedgehog engine provided that they could port the unique boost meter. Seeing these play at the same fidelity as Unleashed and Generations would go a long way in garnering more respect for them. Great video as always!
When I was playing Sonic Generations and saw the credits, I remember seeing gameplay for the HD version of Unleashed and being confused. Ididn't know the Wii version was different until I saw that gameplay.
FINAFUCKINLY! Someone saying the same thing. It’s true that the ps3/Xbox are more looked at nowadays due to them having the best graphics but Wii was just balls to the the walls with the best ranking system of any sonic game to this DAY and I have a lot of great memories with the wii version. Thank you for giving the Wii version the respect it deserves!
@@warriorofthegrandline2y618 The thing is that there's nothing wrong with 2D sections. It's just that they sucked in Colors. The 3D sections weren't that great either if I'm being honest. Rush was all in 2D and it's my favorite boost game.
Thank you for making this one! It's weird how little conversation Unwiished gets because it sold pretty well and I'm sure tons of other 10-year-olds got unwiished and were extremely confused only to love it in the end.
Ironically Unwiished Arid Sands is probably my favorite level in a boost Sonic game and honestly, I think the Unwiished take on the boost formula is the superior take. It's unfortunate it was never expanded upon.
I've only ever played the wii version and I had a blast be there night or day, same with colors, it was after colors that I finally was able to see what people thought online and saw that people didn't like unleashed. And that there was apparently a stage called empire city?! What?
UnWiished is truly one of the last games that does wonders with their limitations as a demake. I love both versions (both day and night stages) and I know how hard it would be to see or remake a demake version of a game... as mods for existing games won't be close at all to the escence of the gameplay just like people who thinks that Unleashed stages in Generations are the "definitive way to play" because probably those people haven't really played Unleashed in the first place...
So glad to see a piece from a Sonic fan that appreciates this version of Unleashed. It got unfairly maligned from a certain sector of the Sonic fandom. I saw it less from other similar Wii games with multiplats with separate games (Ghostbusters and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 1 come to mind, though TFU2 was a better received game on Wii than on HD... ironically, similar to Sonic, lol).
Day 3 of Novidember. Yeah, I pretty much agree with everything here now that I'm older. Back in my childhood, I got the Wii version and it was boring to say the least. But now that my brain has the ability to make decisions freely. It was a blast to replay it after watching the video and about an hour of doubting myself.
I hope that you talk about the night sections. Oddly enough, I really enjoy the night sections (particularly in the HD version) because of the combat of the game. I enjoy it as a break from the go as fast as possible and the shift to being a beat-em up with combos that make you feel stylish. It's not Devil May Cry or Bayonetta, but for a Sonic game having this playstyle, it's very fun to me.
These videos I'm doing are going to be purely on the modern Sonic style of stages. Personally, I didn't really enjoy what I played of the Night stages, but it's good to hear you got something out of it!
@@Lowart did you upgrade yourself, since the combos become really exhilarating and strong the more levels you gain, the low point I'd say are the bosses because you don't get to punch them much and instead just wait for a weak point to be exposed like 90% of platforming bosses, which reminds me of the dmc reboot. The music is also an issue but the ps3 lets you stream your own music over gameplay so I fixed it by lowering the music volume to 0 in the game settings and putting on the actual night stage music that is so good
@@Lowart That's totally fair. Night can feel very repetitive and clunky. I think that the combat was the only thing that really carried that half of the game. I think if you're going to be tackling modern Sonic as a whole for these videos, that's going to be a good perspective on how you take on future games. The comparison of what Unleashed started with and how the series expands upon it in the future is what I'm most excited for you to talk about.
This was my first contact with Sonic Unleashed. Well... kinda, actually my first contact with Sonic Unleashed was with the PS2 version in 2010, here in Brazil consoles like PS3, Xbox 360 and even the Wii were stupidly expensive at the time so the PS2 became a gateway to those who wanted a console but couldn't afford so much, that's why I'm very grateful to Sega for releasing Sonic Unleashed on the PS2, years later I was able to see the Wii version and play the PS3 version, but still I keep the PS2 version fondly. I love this version, even though it's not as complex or complete as the HD version, I love the design of the day stages and I honestly think the night stages are better in this version than the HD version especially because they don't last as long as the HD version. (and not have so much framerate drop) I know it's almost impossible, but I hope the Wii/PS2 version is re-released someday, even if it's in the Playstation Plus classics catalogue, I honestly think it deserves as much recognition as the HD version.
I think Unwiished's concept of boost was wayy better then the one we kept, the HD version is just "press X to go faster", Unwiished boost is actually unique Also I like the fact that you're not just constantly boosting. Even in Generations I barely even see the normal running animation
It didn't click until I reached Arid Sands, but it really feel like a cart racer, and the boost is pretty much a mario mushroom. It's even able to get you to shortcuts that you need a certain speed level to reach, so the racer comparisons really go hard. And the night stages are pretty platforming heavy, so you still get platforming gameplay elsewhere in the package, which is nice.
This is the only version of Unleashed I’ve played and it was fun. When I was younger, I didn’t get too far and preferred the boost in Colours. I went back to it a few years ago, but I don’t think I got past the Ring Challenge in Adabat, so I might have to go back and finish it someday.
I think this game needs remaster more than HD version. Especially, Nighttime will be perfect with SD stages, HD graphics and HD werehog physics and combats.
This is my favorite version of the boost as it’s not just Sonic’s default fastest speed like in the other games. It’s the only one where I had a risk of actually running head first into a wall.
Sonic Unleashed Wii is my favorite version of Unleashed and my favorite Sonic game ever, I still play it till this day. I really respect this version, and I definitely have a special love for it, it was a very important part of my childhood, and I also love the different take on the boost formula this version has (also, I think the Werehog stages are way more enjoyable here). EDIT: I forgot to mention, one thing that really stands out to me in this version is how the daytime gameplay feels very rhythmic, it's like every single action the player can perform was already planned, and in order to perform them correctly, you have to follow the rhythm. For some reason, I don't feel the same way in other boost games, but it might be just me.
I didn’t get far in this game, it was my first sonic game and I got it when I was really young, so young that I couldn’t beat the hubs like AT ALL because I had no clue how to read most of it lol
Everyone talks about how this game technically has more werehog stages but i feel like where the HD game would give you a 30 minute long werehog stage this game gives you 3 10 minute long ones, totalling to the same amount ,and those who dont like the werehog/don't wanna play a 30 minute level can take breaks without having to reset the level later
I genuinely love Unwiished as it was the first version of Unleashed I got, especially because of how much fun I have with Eggmanland and the Dark Gaia and Perfect Dark Gaia fight in this version of the game. Night levels were better for being shorter and beatable in less than 10 minutes. It's definitely my favorite of the two due to less focus on boosting and just being more fun overall (including the Dark Guardian fight as well!)
If there's ever a proper Unleashed remaster/re-release, it would feel so wrong if it didn't have this version as well. I know Colors and Generations re-released without the DS/3DS versions, but this one is a standout as it is the only "same name, different game" Sonic that was also on home consoles. It's so interesting, it's like an alternate concept of what Unleashed could be, as opposed to Colors DS and Generations 3DS, which are more just their parent games' concepts and mechanics put into a Sonic Rush format.
Just got the CD soundtrack for this game today at 2:25p.m. and it's the Planetary Pieces Sonic World Adventure Original Soundrack CD and I'm listening to it while watching this! 7:25p.m. 6/15/2023
Funnily enough this version of the game sold *more* than the PS3/360 version(s) but yet most people talk about the HD version. I wondered how that happened
I prefer this boost system to the constant hold the button kind. If there was some slightly better non-boost controls to accommodate traditional platforming, it could be a real blast.
I played Sonic Unleashed on PS2 initially and hated it, then I streamed the PS3 version as my 100th game and it's now my favourite 3D Sonic game, we'll see where Frontiers falls next week
While I will agree that Unwiished is good, the HD version is still better. And yes, I played the PS2 version before the HD one. I will say that I don't really like the SD version's boost. How it only works in increments. It's still a good game, but the HD version is just better. Higher res, better Sonic model, stuff like that. The levels are different and both good in their own right, but I still believe that the HD version is the better version. You did make a good point in that this game, both versions, are more like racing games than platforming games.
I can't believe no one is calling lowart out for making such an obvious mistake with this video. How could this not be the first proper video he uploaded after his 30 videos for 30 days announcement. There was a long time no see joke opportunity if he did, and he completely passed it up.
I had the Wii version and thoroughly enjoyed it and still have it. I think I got to Eggman Land but never completed it. Blame my ADHD. I would live to get my hands on a PS3 or Xbox 360 and play the HD version...maybe a modified one to allow it to run more smoothly. My sister introduced me to Sonic with the Game Gear, which lasted a ridiculous amount of time, and Sonic Unleashed on the Wii was my first Sonic game. I got a copy after my parents rented it for me from Family Video so many times my dad just bought the game at a store for me.
UnWiished may get a lot of flak because it's well... ya know, a game on the Wii. But honestly I prefer how UnWiished its ranking system over every other Sonic game and is why I'm kinda glad Frontiers decided to make the Ranks tied to your time rather than the overall score. Not even the Nighttime stages follow the traditional ranking system, instead opting to rank based off of how fast you completed the stage and how many Rings and Dark Gaia energy you collected. As a result, Sun & Moon Medals are 100% optional and are only obtained from getting S Ranks and beating missions. Only being used to unlock extra missions, hints, music, concept art, cutscenes and give more permanent Extra Lives. That's right, Extra Lives *don't* get replenished via collecting 100 Rings. Instead automatically replenishing after every stage regardless if you cleared it, quit the stage or got a Game Over. Of course like previously mentioned, getting 100 Rings in a stage won't grant an Extra Life and instead more lives can be obtained *once* via the Gaia Gates. Also as previously mentioned, the lives are permanent in case it wasn't completely obvious. Although unfortunately I forgot the exact number of max lives you end up having. I think it was 13 but it could either be more than that or less than that.
The PS2 version was the first version of Unleashed I ever played, so I have a lot of nostalgia for it, even the werehog stages were fun. An interesting thing about this version is that some day time missions take place on a second map for certain zones; Spagonia, Chunnan, Shamar, and Adabat, meaning there may have been 2 day acts planned. The second maps are just as good as the main ones, sadly you never get to play through them fully as each mission only takes place in a small section of them, except Shamar which does have one mission using the entire map.
Sonic unleashed is like the Mario Galaxy of Sonic, the most legendary and nostalgic Sonic game and fantastic gameplay and soundtrack And btw the hd version is trash
While I do like Unleashed, maybe more than Unwiished Currently, I can only easily access Unwiished. So, I am interested in trying it, and seeing how good it is as an adult
I could never beat unleashed on the ps3 as a kid. I guess I never figured out I need to actually go to the stages and look for the medals. I recently got into sonic again and have been playing the old wii games. I never had unwiished so I bought it and honestly comparing the daytime stages to colors is actually funny. I am playing them at the same time and it baffles me how much easier to control sonic is in unwiished than colors. Colors sonic so janky at times and honestly infuriating in 2d sections on the wisp planet for example. Makes me wish I had played unwiished growing up. Still not done yet but even the warehog stages are kinda fun in unwiished because they're so short and not exactly hard like on ps3
I feel like the big reason people disregard Unwiished is the Werehog Sure it has good boost levels but there is only one boost level compared to the 3 to 5 Werehog levels per country The werehog sucks in Wii and you'll be spending the majority of the game in night stages)

Sonic unleashed wii doesn't deserve respect the HD version does though. Is what I said before I watched and after I did I started to respect it.
Unpopular opinion: Unwiished is more fun than Unleashed. The freedom with the physics, the thrill of momentum, and just how fun the platforming stages are is INCREDIBLE variety!
Unwiished has pretty decent day stages, too bad the night ones have no combos and force you to motion mash and do platforming with a really bad jump, which is pretty important when they're half the game. The night stages in the HD versions have so many fun combos, and much better platforming, which makes them pretty entertaining even though they are too easy for action game standards. The wiihog is such a chore and the idea that "you play less of him because the stages are shorter" is just a placebo because there's more night stages they're just split into smaller chunks you can save in between, and the night stages are much easier to get done with by skipping platforms with skills and fighting well

It's so interesting, it's like an alternate concept of what Unleashed could be, as opposed to Colors DS and Generations 3DS, which are more just their parent games' concepts and mechanics put into a Sonic Rush format.

BECAUSE NO MATTER WHAT
THE ONLY THING I KNOW
THERE WILL BE INPUT
SHED
Just got the CD soundtrack for this game today at 2:25p.m. and it's the Planetary Pieces Sonic World Adventure Original Soundrack CD and I'm listening to it while watching this! 7:25p.m. 6/15/2023
this is my first time learning that on top of not having the overworld, I also didn't have the same stages that everyone else has had
the side stepping sections look cool
the spindash in modern ITS BACK ITS BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK
6:34 back before Sonic Forces’s press button and win boost sections.
i enjoyed ps2 unleashed so much back in the day
Funnily enough this version of the game sold *more* than the PS3/360 version(s) but yet most people talk about the HD version. I wondered how that happened
Can't respect it, it broke my wii nunchuck...
Wii version is good but only problem is the slippery controls
I had the Wii version and thoroughly enjoyed it and still have it. I think I got to Eggman Land but never completed it. Blame my ADHD. I would live to get my hands on a PS3 or Xbox 360 and play the HD version...maybe a modified one to allow it to run more smoothly.
My sister introduced me to Sonic with the Game Gear, which lasted a ridiculous amount of time, and Sonic Unleashed on the Wii was my first Sonic game. I got a copy after my parents rented it for me from Family Video so many times my dad just bought the game at a store for me.
I was born a year after sonic unleashed comed out lol
I think it’s awesome
this is why the best console to get unleashed on is ps3 (because you can also get ps2 on it)
Am I the only one who wishes that they combined both the wii-ps2 games with the “real one” as a remaster?
The PS2 version was the first version of Unleashed I ever played, so I have a lot of nostalgia for it, even the werehog stages were fun.
An interesting thing about this version is that some day time missions take place on a second map for certain zones; Spagonia, Chunnan, Shamar, and Adabat, meaning there may have been 2 day acts planned. The second maps are just as good as the main ones, sadly you never get to play through them fully as each mission only takes place in a small section of them, except Shamar which does have one mission using the entire map.
sonic unleashed on wii/ps2 has more variety, than the new sonic games and that is so funny, i think :))
Unwished its unleashed
Is the first world Santorini? It looks a lot like it.
The Wii version is the one without 2D sections? You’d think the 2D section would be MORE numerous since they’re probably less technically demanding.
its got old asphalt vibes for me
I feel as though Sonic Unwiished was the foundation set for Sonic Colors, I haven't played this version though so who I am I to say this.
Sonic unleashed is a good game. The wii version seems to be the superior one
I will say, the camera seems painful in Dragon Road. It's so low, you can barely see what's ahead.
I honestly thing this version has "boost" while the HD version has "stamina" or whatever.
Sonic unleashed is like the Mario Galaxy of Sonic, the most legendary and nostalgic Sonic game and fantastic gameplay and soundtrack
And btw the hd version is trash
Unleaded was the first Boost game? It was a new formula and they still felt like they needed two game modes? That seems more like a sequel move.
While I do like Unleashed, maybe more than Unwiished
Currently, I can only easily access Unwiished.
Tbh Unleashed Wii feels a lot more like Colors than Unleashed PS3
I feel like the big reason people disregard Unwiished is the Werehog
Sure it has good boost levels but there is only one boost level compared to the 3 to 5 Werehog levels per country
The werehog sucks in Wii and you'll be spending the majority of the game in night stages)
Sonic unleashed wii doesn't deserve respect the HD version does though. Is what I said before I watched and after I did I started to respect it.
Just a question: you ever gonna do a review on the Sonic The Hedgehog movies? The first and second one?
I haven't seen them yet, but if I had anything interesting to say I probably would!
@@Lowart oh okay 👌 😅
THE WEREHOG LEVELS ARE BETTER YOU CANNOT CHANGE MY MIND. JUST DO COMBOS AND YOU WILL HAVE SO MUCH FUN.
I didn’t understand that you meant unleashed for the wii at first and thought the title was in OWO speak
Unpopular opinion: Unwiished is more fun than Unleashed.
The freedom with the physics, the thrill of momentum, and just how fun the platforming stages are is INCREDIBLE variety!
Better than the HD Version. Don't @ me.
You're god damn right.
nooo day late
I liked this one a lot though
I prefer the Wii and XBOX360 version
I’m the 1k like
I mean half of the game was great the other half was a ball and chain that only got heavier the longer you played
Meow
Unwiished has pretty decent day stages, too bad the night ones have no combos and force you to motion mash and do platforming with a really bad jump, which is pretty important when they're half the game. The night stages in the HD versions have so many fun combos, and much better platforming, which makes them pretty entertaining even though they are too easy for action game standards. The wiihog is such a chore and the idea that "you play less of him because the stages are shorter" is just a placebo because there's more night stages they're just split into smaller chunks you can save in between, and the night stages are much easier to get done with by skipping platforms with skills and fighting well
first :)
I got bored playing Sonic Unwiished after playing for 10 Minutes in Apotos stage 1. The HD version is more better then Unwiished
No it doesn't
