The most obvious issue to point out with the wisps is that, instead of compounding on Sonic's moveset, not only do they greatly restrict it, limiting the skill ceiling, but a few of them are straight up just moves which used to be in Sonic's base moveset which have been arbitrarily stripped away from him in order to give the wisps value.
Who would have though, artificial scarcity...in a Sonic game.

I'll give you the Light Speed Dash but the Spin Dash would be pointless and colors anyway. Regardless though, The Wisps really aren't meant to be power-ups in the first place. They're tools that you use to access Red Rings and alternate paths. You could find them intrusive but to be honest 99.9% of the time they're completely optional. Colors has a significantly more exploration focused gameplay style and the Wisps complement that very well.

    • @SSL_2004

@user-px3hw5kz2x They literally aren't. Lmao There are two stages where you are 100% uncategorically forced to use wisps. Starlight Carnival Act 1 with Cube, and one of the Asteroid Coaster stages (I don't remember which one exactly but it's the one where you have a choice between Spikes and Cube).

The wisps aren’t a really good gimmick, but I don’t know, they can be fun.
But after Colors, they should’ve been done with, like the werehog. But Colors was praised for being another good Sonic game, and Sega thought it was because of the wisps so they put it in every new Sonic game.
Generations gets a pass because, how could you represent Planet Wisp from Sonic Colors without the freaking wisps. But after that point, as I said before, they should’ve been done with them.
Lost World, they’re there. Forces? Forces the wisps and Classic Sonic in because those games sold well.

Sure they give Sonic Boost but who cares since you can get it from enemies again which mean you never run out or have to solely rely on Boost Capsules. Even the Wispons relate to the Wisps in Name Only, you could have had a Generic Flame Thrower or Generic Lightning Rod and the Gameplay wouldn’t have changed one bit. People really over exaggerate the Wisps Usage in the Games

I really did agree with a lot of what you said in this video, but I still struggle to call Colors a bad video game. When you consider the context of its development (being developed on the weaker Wii hardware, only having about a year of development, the at the time criticism of Unleashed being too fast and not having enough platforming, etc.) Colors was the logical next step forward. It didn't try to evolve the boost formula as much as it did reinvent it in a new context, and I think it did a good job at that. It's okay to not like it, but I think it s always important to consider all the facets of a product when evaluating it.

Sonic Colours main issue for me is that it's a slow paced 2D platformer inheriting the controls and mechanics of a game that put platforming on the side in favour of going as fast as possible and creating challenges about maintaining that speed without dying, as a result, it never really succeeds at being either

Ur analysis of colors gameplay is so incredibly precise & thorough It's hard to argue against anythin u say as a possible misunderstandin of how it works. This really is a case of "not for u"(mostly). I love the game & it's a top 5 for me cus of jus bout everythin u've stated here but I still do like Gens/unleashed more. I REALLY feel the need to point out 1 SPECIFIC detail bout how this game is put together. JUS AS U STATED this game IS [supposed to to be] structured like a typical classic game(2 acts & a boss each zone). HOWEVER cus the devs thought it wouldn't pass as enough content for most ppl they chose to spread it out. The first act would largely stay the same wit more traditional boost level design from unleashed BUT the 2nd Act would be split in half(there are some parts in the game where this is EXTREMELY obv). In-between the split 2nd act there would smaller more platform 2d centric acts to fill in the time before the boss(it was done this way to spread things out as evenly as possible). If u see this I'd implore u to at least try somethin like a mod that puts the OG full acts back together. This doesn't change wut the base game is but it shows the true intentions/potential of the game & I feel it should be noted. I will also say that colors I feel had the best controls for platformin out of all of the 3 first boost titles

Mods don't change what a game is. The game is what it is - and modding the plucked apart six Acts into two also wouldn't fix the rather liberal recycling of level design and even bosses, let alone any of the misguided stage gimmicks; arguably, the latter might actually feel worse in longer stages (y'know - longer stages exaggerate good _and_ bad things).

When I first played this game back during Christmas of 2010, I completely lost interest during Sweet Mountain specifically this level at 5:56. I put the game down and it took me until 2012 to finally beat it. I grown to realize that fsr whenever there was a Sonic game was exclusively on a Nintendo console during the 2010's, it feels like SEGA executives instructed their devs to always cater to the Super Mario fans (with the exception of the Wii U Sonic Boom game because that was never meant to be a Nintendo exclusive at first).

The problem is really that they took the fundamentals of a Sonic game _without modifying them enough._ Beyond the butchered control scheme made necessary because of the input device, Colors took the core of Unleashed and built something totally different around that, which isn't how game design works. (Also how they plucked the length of two Acts apart into six needlessly separate and short ones, while also liberally reusing level design.)

One thing I never understood about this game was people claiming this was Unleashed without the werehog. That is not true. Sonic Unleashed hd had fast paced reaction based stages. This game is the polar opposite. You instead do extremely slow platforming with lackluster wisp powers and hardly play in 3d. Stages often are nothing but following a spring or changing blocks you know tedious crap. I think this is so highly praised is because it has only one gameplay style. It also had a simplistic story where nothing happens and characters are out of character. Is it any surprise the series played it safe after this game? Or that it eventually started to narl at people once they finally noticed this as a major problem with Forces. Whereas Frontiers finally changed course for the better. Lost World and Boom are the anomalies so they don't really count. We never got a full game of Unleashed style daytime stages. That would have been so great but we never got that.

I played the three other boost game before Sonic Colours and after years of hearing how amazing this game was and it was one of the best in the series I was just left underwhelmed. I was almost begging for every cutscene to end cause it just wasn't funny and I couldn't even make fun of how stupid it was like Forces. The level design I think is just a step back from Unleashed with a much slower game that has too much stop and go. With Stages that come dangerously close to Sonic Forces in Length.
Do I even need to compare it to Generations? All I'll say on that front is I now understand why Planet Wisp is the worst stage in Generations, but honestly I like that stage better than most of this game cause it's long enough to actually make something of itself. I remember it which is more than can be said about this game.

Sonic Unleashed on PS2 was one of my first Sonic games so I was really excited for this. This one looked like Unleashed but without the warehog, what could go wrong? But I got bored of Colors real fast and 10 year old me couldn't figure out why. Now I know why. It's nothing but a watered down version of Unleashed. There's so much slow platforming and gimmicks. The controls are so simplified to the point you feel like you're playing a mobile game. Colors is an insult to the boost formula, but it unfortunately wouldn't be the last.

I never really liked the Boost formula. I prefer Sonic when the goal is to build momentum to stay on the faster routes, while failing to do so forces you down to the slowest path.
If Sonic team had kept that design philosophy, instead of just making Sonic go fast all the time and just desperately trying to find any gimmicks that stick by attempting everything the internet claims they would like to see in a Sonic game in passing, then maybe I'd be more a Sonic fan.

      @SparkTFS 2 года назад +1

Yeah. They try to catter everyone, and instead end up dividing the fanbase more and more, game after game.
They also put themselves in a corner with the overuse of the boost mechanic, as this "fast all the time" gameplay makes it difficult to come up with level design ideas: Sonic is just so freaking fast that it's difficult to react to anything, and if you move so slight in a curve, you're mostly certain to fall out of the stage.

    • @TwilightWolf032

@@SparkTFS That's my problem with Sonic's speed - I want to be able to actually see what's coming up and have the chance to react accordingly, but he's always going so fast any obstacles end up being unfair, requiring prior knowledge of the level layout to overcome, or just full of automated sections where doing anything other than boosting sends you flying out of the course.

I get that you don't like Sonic Colors but eh...I still really do and it was the first Sonic game I've ever played.
In the first levels of each world you aren't just boosting in a straight line or jumping a couple of times you are also doing genuine platforming too more times then you think and just generally Sonic gameplay. The focus isn't just on setting the mood, it's also about the gameplay too.
The mood was honestly never bland or boring tbh.
Again it's not just focused on spectacle, a lot of it is still genuinely focused on the gameplay especially the stuff with the wisps.
You say Unleashed already did this but you show gameplay from Sonic Generations...is that intentional?
It does get to be too much at times but that's clearly in the small small minority of times.
Half of the level wasn't overglorfied cutscenes...there was gameplay there even if it wasn't a lot of it.
There really isn't as much of the stuff as you think there is.
The final level isn't just sidestepping, you gotta jump too at times and boosting helps too.
Yeah Sonic Colors is clearly mostly a 2D game.
Yeah Sonic Colors is slower...but it's still fast enough, it's not a bad thing that it's slower as it's still fast enough most of the time but it's not too fast which sometimes that's what it feels like in Unleashed.
Most of the stages gimmicks and progression were pretty strong though.
The golden bouncer one really isn't that much of a stinker but it's not great. It did feel intuitive and when it moved in different directions it wasn't difficult to predict like how with the footage you show at 5:39 there are platforms going upward showing that the golden bouncer will be going upwards. I didn't hate it as it wasn't that bad.
It did get repetitive at times...but it wasn't always repetitive with the changing directions and changing obstacles and such.
The same can't be said for these sections as they weren't that obnoxious. The point here was that the player would have to carefully avoid the layers.
Ok yeah I agree that having the obstacles move on their own would have been more interesting but what we got wasn't that bad. They do force the player to stop for a reason that being to be very careful while avoiding the lasers and not to screw up with you activating the lasers too.
The stages don't really feel built around the red rings but chunks of the stages substance (certainly not the majority) can only be found by trying to collect them.
Laser and Hover doesn't let you bypass huge chunks of the stage with ease as they bypass some chunks of the stage but it isn't huge chunks or that big of chunks. They don't usually trivialize platforming challenges but that does happen sometimes but that's only a small minority of times. The controls of Spike when it clings to walls isn't ever awkward. The start and stop nature of Cube and Rocket wasn't really a bad thing. Yeah Frenzy was overused a couple of times but usually it didn't overstay it's welcome. Drill isn't overused to the point of tedium, it's just a very good Wisp that can be used for such a variety of situations.
Well I don't have a problem with all of them and by the end I wasn't tired of them and their gimmick.
Really? I really don't see how it felt like that for you at all as for me it didn't feel like that at all.
For me they were never really mind numbing.
That best part of them isn't marred at all by how they're unlocked as how they're unlocked is just fine.
Yeah it was mandatory to have them unlocked to get many of the red rings but I dunno about getting many of the s ranks...you may still have been able to get s rank on those levels without those unlocked wisps.
Well my first run through most of these levels weren't annoying.
There was a point to explore all that much to still get as much stuff as possible the first time around and to get the best possible score too. Eh...most of them are pretty fun to speed through actually.
There are only a LITTLE too many waiting based obstacles but it was mostly fine for the most part. There are also only a LITTLE too many slow gimmicks but it's also mostly fine for the most part
I mean it wasn't even a issue to begin with really.
This really isn't an inherent problem with the game's design. They shouldn't do that as the Wisps aren't the focus in the levels the first time around.
    It isn't an issue though.
Speeding through the stages and the traditional platforming is mostly fine.
Not really as there's actually quite a lot of branching paths in the game, I remember one from Tropical Resort that resulted in a shortcut to the finish line. As for skill intensive moments well just the general platforming and speeding around stages well clearly is skill intensive and requires the player's skill in order to survive and progress through the levels and get stuff like red rings.
Sonic's controls weren't super great but they felt comfortable enough tbh.
If he doesn't go as high as you would expect that sounds more like a expectation issue more then anything else. He doesn't drop too quickly. He is a little more slippery which is weird but it's not anything too big.
Well I still liked how he handled and I thought that most of these stages were fine as is.
Well I find it as a sort of compelling evolution of the boost formula and it is a entertaining alternative style of play too.
Colors is flawed but it isn't bad, it's pretty good for what it was.

In fact, the game gives both ways. And that's the problem: both of them suck. Instead of focusing on just one of them and polishing it as much as possiblie, they choose quantity over quality (of stages, options of progression, hours of playtime).

@@mrbanks456 I appreciate that it tried to introduce more exploration and distinct thematics for the stages. But even if it has a lot of gimmicks and stages, the 2D level design most of the time didn't feel like that of a Sonic game.
It doesn't have urgency. It doesn't have that many opportunities for you to create mommentum and get fast. It barely has any slopes, loops or sections where you can reach other routes or retain speed by fast reflexes/antecipation. And Sonic is slow, pretty slow. He moves like he's underwater everytime, and he jumps like he weights 1 ton, it's just too heavy.
One could say the game feels more like a Mario game - New Super Mario Bros Wii, for example -, because of it's blocky design and slow gameplay. But even Mario games give you more freedom of movement and maneurability, have more variety on the heights of the terrain, and allow yourself to go as fast as you want if you manage to time well your jumps and use the enemies and terrain of the level at your advantage.
Conclusion: New Super Mario Bros Wii has a better 2D Sonic level design than Sonic Colors (Wii).

To me, this video shows how sonic fans and reviewers really are far more alike than they think. They both have 1 style or character that they think is good, and whenever that is tweaked to give a different experience or another character is added, they feel the need to cry about it on RUclips and blow minor and inconsequential flaws way out of the water because its not exactly perfect. Yes some of the level design in this game isn't great all the time, but you brushed over all the amazing parts of levels, such as how you can use the laser hidden in a top portion of the first quickstep zone of tropical resort act 3 to reach a shortcut hidden above the start of the first quickstep section. Or how you can use the boost to reach a hidden rail above the start of aquarium park act 1. Both examples are 3d as wel, and sonics 3d controls feel far more responsive, with I think the shuttle animation tweaks to make him more bouncy really going a long way. The 'drill is overused' claim of yours is very unjust, as it only appears in 3 of the 6 areas, and in many stages within these areas it just isn't used. The hover is one iv always personally enjoyed, it feels very freeing to just go wherever and skip certain, more dull 2d bits. If this game released in its intended state with 2 full length acts, I can guarantee you would be singing its praises but because dull, Mario maker copy and paste missions are mandatory, the majority of which aren't even bad, and something YOU ALSO HAVE TO DO IN GENERATIONS (and yes they're more 3d there, but 3d does not make it immediately good, as many of these sections are linear and have little in the means of interesting gimmicks or gameplay, as well as not featuring red ringsrings like the colours gimmick stages. Yes starlight carnival sucks, taki but there are so many little gamebgamean guarrantee all you angry babies who are still salty becajse a journalist called sonic 06, a literal broken game regardless of what it could have been, bad, then you are pathetic.ails and secrets that would have been praised in your unwiished review, but are brushed over here because 'ew the game used to be overrated we need to hate it now'

I know this doesn't have much to do with the video outside of sonic. But it always annoyed me how people treated marine the racoon from Sonic rush adventure. They almost always ignore her character arc that she goes through in the game. Even Ian Flynn treats her like she is the worst character every and hates her despite all of his complaints involved her before her character arc. It's like he hasn't even played the game. What makes it worse is that he has a character who's own character arc causes them to act similar to how Marine acted at the end of her character arc making not only the fans hypocrites but Ian Flynn, a freaking professional writer and a sonic writer at that, a hypocrite.
