I've been loving this one. Yes, the performance could use a bit of work, but man... that story, and the voice work! As someone who speaks Mandarin, this is a real treat. It's also nice to see some decent Chinese-to-English subtitles for once, lol. I'm so glad this game came to Switch.
I heard a few people on the jrpg subreddit (I know it's not from Japan) say that the translation is weak, but you seem to disagree? I imagine translating from Chinese to English could be rather difficult to do well, where it retains not just the meaning, but also the underlying feelings and context.
@@knivesoutcatchdamouse2137 The translation isn't 100% accurate, but it's definitely better than most games I've seen with Chinese-to-English translations. Too often I see Chinese games with English translations that are barely understandable, are loaded with spelling/grammar errors, or convey an entirely different meaning to what was actually said in Chinese. I will admit I'm not a native speaker of Mandarin (I learned as an adult and utilized the language as a significant part of my job working with elderly Chinese immigrants for years). That said, my spouse *is* a native speaker, and we're both enjoying the game so far.
You are right that translating between the two languages is tricky. There are quite a few Mandarin phrases that don't have a true equivalent in English. On top of that, the entire mindset when speaking Chinese is quite different, which adds a further level of complexity to translations. You almost need two separate personalities when switching between the two languages, which makes it hard to convey the correct feel to an audience that may be unfamiliar with the language/culture that the game takes place in. I feel like this games does a decent job of that, but that could just be my own experience with the culture kicking in.
I loved the last Sword and Fairy on pc. It had a great epic (love) story, great ost, excellent gameplay and was beautiful.
ikr, there are so many these kind of rpg with little to nothing expose on PC. they should step up and remaster some of these chinese theme games.

I'm so glad you guys reviewed this one. It caught my eye, but I wanted to wait to see if you guys and Switch Corner reviewed it. I love a good narrative, so I'm probably going to pick this up eventually. I'm glad that games like this are getting a chance to garner an audience.
I really enjoyed this on the PS4 and happily preordered it for the Switch. For the record, the visual problems (lag and framerate particularly) were on the PS4 version as well. I think its just how the game is.
Might end up having a look at this one. Huge props to the SwitchUp team for putting me onto some great games at great prices!

I agree, which is weird to say about a game reviewing channel but I think they’re just really likeable and chill to listen to & showcase games I don’t see elsewhere such as this one. I might actually buy this now. Also cool at that they’re British haha

This is a surprise to see a review of. I had randomly found this on the eshop, as one does, and wishlists it. Gives me a FromSoftware game meets Onimusha for the Playstation era which was an awesome title and series. This will remain on my wishlist for now but it may graduate to the backlog mountain should I manage to chip away a cliffside for it 😅. Cheers SwitchUp!
Appreciate the review for this! I'd heard of it a while back and knew very little. Having watched the video I now know enough to make a more decisive decision on purchasing. Kind of reminds me of Fate: Samurai Remnant with the linear levels, combat and iffy frame rate 😅 but, nothing a good patch or two can't help rectify. Appreciate the review guys 👌🏼 top notch
Played this in my xbox years ago, getting on switch is a nice surprise. Leaning towards grabbing it physical this time around.

I read in a review that moving the game to internal memory from SD card helps the Performance a bit, also disabling AntiAliasing. But the latter did not do much for me so I kept it enabled
I did enjoy this on PS4, never finished as got distracted by other games (as I often do) but may go back as I'd forgotten how good it was. Glad more people get a chance to play it now.
Well this was a surprise, I’d never heard of this one but I like what I’m seeing. I guess your choice is static play or on the go, personally on the go for me!

THANK YOU for reviewing this, i was so curious but my main fear was 'this is going to run like goop on switch'. Sadly that is true. I hope game developers embrace high performance stylization in their art direction in the next gen!
it looks a bit like Onimusha from Ps and FF had a baby.. Which are both excellent games imo.
Just when I have finished Morbid Lords of Ire! I would like to try new ARPG with good narration. I guess I will try this.

You sold me the game until the performance part 😅 although I did notice some hickups on the footage prior to performance section. To me performance is more important than visuals, but here's hoping this one gets a patch soon that can improve both aspects of the game, like we had for biomutant. Will keep my eye out for it on a sale either way and hope for that patch, been waiting for a quality samurai-like game for switch for a while now..
Loved this game on PS4 and have enjoyed my tme on the Switch version as well. Graphic problems aside.

What controller are u using instead of the joycons ?
I have been waiting for this on switch, tried demo on steam and considered the ps4/5 version as it was on sale 50% off. The game is awesome but yeah, the visuals do need an urgent patch, its kind of blurry but the cutscenes are great, some indoor areas are fine, but it is bad in places. I am tempted to wait for a sale on ps4 again, but will play this version. I really hope they patch it soon as its a great game for story and combat.

I think this review has convinced me to buy the ps4 version despite my initial interest in playing it on the switch.
The lag and framerate problems exist there too. I can't say how bad they are compared to the Switch version though.

Just ordered this game dreamcutter and a few other games from playasia really looking forward to diving into this and learning mandarin of corse😂 mm then perhaps this game might look better on the next switch system?
Nice to see a xianxia / Wuxi style game on switch. Probably wait for a sale on this one
It is hard to believe but technically this series isn’t a Wuxia but a Sci-Fi on ancient China background. Instead of the usual learning secret martial art plot thingy the heroes usually use the power of science to overcome hardships. It is really one of the kind. It is also really unfortunate that the devs are not resourceful at all or otherwise they could have built this franchise better.

There's got to be a "Beautiful Mind"-esque piece of maths that describes the perfect "Difficulty/Satisfaction At Beating" ratio for bosses... so few games get it right

For the switch it's decent. I never played those chinese jrpg (except one tactical which was fine).

So many rpgs and jrpgs on switch. Even some of the best crpgs, I played many but I'm somewhat overwhelmed. Especially with the lesser known Jrpgs, nobody has enough time to play them all. 😸

I actually really like that the voice acting is in the native tongue. I find it really weird when tv shows or movies have everyone speaking English when very clearly they should be speaking another language
The lack of environmental exploration turns me down a little, but the story and the characters seem to be very good! Never heard of this one, might be going on my wishlist, thanks for the review!

I played it on PC back in 2021. It's a decent game but not up to the level of shekiro. How ever, this switch port make me want to play it again on my the handheld.

I bought this for the Xbox and was enjoying it until getting bogged down by puzzles. A shame cause I liked the combat a lot.

This game really needs a PC port if there isn't one. It's really asking a lot for the Nintendo Switch to process (graphics-wise).
Its been on steam a while now, there is demo you can try and it really shines on PC.

My expectations for the Switch’s performance has never been high but I am a little disappointed considering that I like the setting and premise of the story. Might hold off since popping in and frame rate are the minimum things for me to hold my attention

Wohl eher wie PS3, du überschätzt die PS2. Zu der Zeit war noch kein Full HD möglich.
Und ausserdem sieht das Spiel gut aus, es braucht nur ein paar patches, damit es immer flüssig läuft
