For many years most movies have been filmed in 4k and more reacently 6k - 8k. It's then mastered at 2k for theatrical distribution and down scaled to 1080p for DVD/bluray/streaming. Eventually they'll release the native 4k versions of most movies/shows from the past 6+ years. Interestingly, most network cable shows are still filmed at 720p because they have a set production pipeline using the original editing equipment/workflow that the series was started with. We filmed for the Bachelor last season using a Canon C300 mkII at 720p lol

I just hate this PRO devices coming with paltry storage I mean 16GB in a Pro device is crazy should of been alot more the OG Shield TV Pro had a 500GB HDD in it. and 8GB in the new base model is nuts I think at a minimum we should of got 32gb in the base and 128 in the pro. These prices they should easily of been able to increase the storage. I mean all they did was add the Switch Lite cpu in it and change the remote and the base model design and call it a day. Don't get me wrong I love my OG Shield TV. I just expected more from Nvidia.

Can you get live tv on this device such as Philo TV? Are Pluto TV, Peacock, and HBO Max available with this unit? Am I able to cast media from my phone onto the tv with this device? I'm not happy with my Roku streaming stick+ as it overheats quite a bit, and freezes up as well. It seems like it's way better quality than what a Roku is. Are you able to do video calls over the tv with this? I don't like portal, so that would be an extra perk for this unit if it does that!

Is this or the apple tv 4k better. Will use on a projector. And have never owned either. The upscaling on the Nvidia looks appealing for 1080p content on a large projector screen.

They're really close. I'd say it mostly depends on which ecosystem you prefer. Apple TV maybe is a little more user-friendly. (And has more storage.)

Nvidia gives you more features for your dollars than Apple 4K. Also with AppleTV+ now available on Roku and Amazon FireTV decides, the popularity of Apple 4K TV will drop for $25 dollar Amazon/Roku dongles that can play AppleTV+ shows. AppleTV 4K is a dead end I think

On my Xiaomi Mi Box 3 the SoC is capable to decode VP9 Profile 2, but the original RUclips app is still streaming in SDR, no matter what.
If you put Smart Tube on the device, it plays happily HDR RUclips videos just fine. But the system integration is not that great, especially the casting feature.
So it's not just the device's fault to not support HDR on RUclips.

I returned my 2017 Shield because I had some refresh rate issues using Plex and Kodi with Plex plugin. Every minute or so, the image freezes for a nanosecond. Could it be because of the 23.98p vs 24p on my TV that I'm losing a frame once in a while ? I tried everything, setting everything at 60p, matching the refresh to my screen and matching my screen's refresh to my device. None of those worked. I'm using a Samsung 55KS8000 and the only way I can have smooth playback is using the native app which is horrible at transcoding audio. Could a pro model fix my problem ? Any help is welcome, thank you guys !

I own a bunch of 2017 Shields. The only upgrade angle I see is for my main tv (which is 4k) if the AI upscaling is a great improvement. I think I would like to understand more about how nice that is compared to what we got in 2015 & 2017 models. I don't mind the $200 price tag as I can either gift or sell an existing Shield I own and recover some of the value. So, is the new AI worth ~$75? I have a lot of 720p-1080p video content that might benefit from a boost.

This may seem reasonable to some however I have fiber nothing more is a
first world problem to me when I'm within 20 foot of my modem (and 1
wall) where YT, and pretty much everything else constantly stops and
buffers. I turn it on and go to watch a video on my late model non smart
4k tv and it throws out 240p .. I mean this is certainly an entitled
complaint but I'm just tired of this kinda stuff after 3 boxes I've not
had one which picks up proper wifi.
