The more I hear JV the more I understand why he's so special. He's really got a fantastic melodic approach to drumming that you just don't hear... especially in younger players. Speed and chops are fashionable but they don't make heads bob like the audience here.

Ah, Mr. Scott. Music gets labelled with names like R 'n' B so it can be sold. I don't think there was ever a genre that was named by a musician; it was always the press or record companies. As for the music here, well replace those drums with an electronic set, put an electric with a fuzz 'n' octave divider in the bass players hands and give Mr. Cleary a synth and then what've you got? Music is music. Good, bad or - sadly - indifferent, it is what it is, labelled or not. As for this clip, as a drummer I'm intrigued by Mr. Vidacovitch, who I've known of for many years. How anyone can ebb and flow with such musical empathy deserves a medal.
All this Genre business. There's only two kinds of music. Good music and shit I don't want to listen to. Did Longhair set out to create a genre when He started fooling with those latin beats? I never realised Johnny was on Crawfish Fiesta one of my fave albums from way back
I really appreciate the way Vidacovich moves when he's playing: fluid yet rhythmic.
