The upgrade cycle doesn't matter. You only buy a HomePod once and then you keep it until the end. Apple TV box isn't usually bought all the time. The XDR display will also be kept for many years... nevertheless, there are these products. I would find an Apple TV in the $1000 to $2000 range with good software and good Chip sets and nice features very interesting. I trust Apple that they get the price dumping under control like the price stability of the iPhones and thus create a good profitable TV. In addition, an Apple product that you keep for many years would be another reason to keep customers in the ecosystem for long time. Win-win

@@johnneshiem2291 ok so you’re one of those. Samsung has historically chucked things on their phones just to show off in marketing how much better it is than the iPhone. The year after half the things they hyped up have disappeared because they were pointless and the remaining are still buggy or not refined. Apple takes its time and focuses on the quality and ease of use. Yes, Apple hasn’t exactly innovated, but I can’t stand the bugginess of anything outside of Apple’s ecosystem (I’ve had multiple phones and products, high and low end). Everyone likes different things but to rubbish everything Apple does is incredibly ignorant. Taking this videos point on software, I like the fact that if I have an Apple product and it becomes discontinued after years, it won’t become obsolete for years after as Apple are great with keeping products updated and all products get the same updates and continue to work together seamlessly. All of my non Apple products get random updates that are never aligned and became obsolete too quickly for my liking. But as I said, to each their own.
@@johnneshiem2291 he said nothing at all about Apple's phones being better than Samsung's phones. You missed the point entirely. Regardless of who has the better technology, Apple's BUSINESS MODEL is mimicked by other companies and their thought process as to what they do and don't go after. You can list spec sheets until you're blue in the face - I owned the Note 8 and now the Note 10 Plus and my laptop is HP - but there's no doubt whatsoever that Apple's business choices work for them more often than not. Case in point, Apple ditched the headphone jack top push their airpods...then not even two years later Samsung ditched the headphone jack to push their galaxy buds. It doesn't matter if the buds are better than the airpods - it's that when corporate execs review many of the things that Apple does, the math checks out and they're inspired to do something similar. The galaxy buds sold like gangbusters for a reason.

I would love it if Apple made a TV because the ecosystem integration would be outstanding. 120hz, Dolby vision and sound, the option for sound bar/HomePod mini support, the works. One of those dream products we can drool over, but only in our dreams.
but the thing is apple is usually not up to date with new technology and when shopping for a tv everyone wants the best of the best hardware which is what Samsung is really good at
There already exist TVs with higher specs than that. Apple seems to be going the route of adding Airplay support to newer TVs instead of building their own sets.
i think the concept of apple acutally making a tv with all of those stuff won't be able to compete with samsung's 8k neo oled behemoth edit: i mean qled
Apple is usually behind on the screen tech on their devices. They're known for great UI but imo Apple TV is the exception to this, it's dated compared to the new Chromecast, for example. Not to mention, their licenses are very limited. The controller is pretty good and unique though.

I think a lot about products Apple makes that aren’t iPhone iPad or Mac. They’re fringe products in a way and their real selling point is how easily they can integrate into the current Apple ecosystem and that they will be high quality. I recently bought AirPods Max. I'd argue that TV buying cycles are effectively getting even longer but manufacturers keep trying to come up with ways to rope people in. Curved and 3D tvs didn't catch on. And the 4K boom, for instance, is most definitely tangible but hasn't caught on nearly as fast as HD did. At this point, a great HD tv showing well-shot content, while technically inferior to 4K, isn't so drastically worse that people wanna rush out and upgrade (so you can imagine just how slowly 8K's gonna get going). And then amongst the 4K tvs, a single manufacturer will have like 5 different models of a 4K set at each size...each price tier having more/better features than the last. Something tells me they could pack all the same features in a single set if they wanted to but they run these clever tricks to try to keep the market fluid.
4k tv’s are the standard for about 5 years but 8k hasn’t yet even in 2023 8k has a small piece of the market share because 0 percent of home media use 8k
So in a short sentence nutshell. They can’t make enough money from it to make it worthwhile because it would want someone to upgrade the tv every year like their devices.
While this does explain why Apple doesn’t make television sets, it poses the question why they didn’t go the Roku route and license the tvOS software to electronics manufacturers to be built into their TV set models on top of manufacturing its own standalone media devices.
Great presentation! In my opinion after 5 "smart" TVs, the worst TV to purchase is a "SMART: TV because the APPs on the TV are never updated and become old, obsolete, almost non functional. This is where the "APPLE" TV like its "NETFLIX" cousin allows current app updating giving the user the latest apps for latest features. Regards.
Another brilliant video from Greg 👏 For me, TV is almost a commodity. Like a Washington machine or a fridge. I change it when it brokes. But I do the same with smartphones, I use them until they broke or become unusable (when they become slow or the memory is full or they don't support many apps or features that I need).
We had a crt from about 1996-2015 and then upgraded to a 1080p set and then to a 4K this year, I would say in about 5 more years I anticipate getting an 8k tv
I assume it is to turn your existing tv into a smart tv at lower cost and still being able to sell you streaming services and HomePods to enhance the experience.
This article makes very good points. But many people have TVs in every bedroom. People won’t upgrade all the time but they might buy 2-4 of them at a time.

I know this video is a few years old, but I do think there are a lot of reasons why Apple should produce TV's. With panel becoming this good, I think the biggest challenge is making use of this technical prowess by developing software for it. Especially using AI can become a big deal in creating beautiful imagery. Even though there are a lot of TV's using Samsung panels for example, they often fail to look as good as the Samsung one. I have a very cheap 4K TV I bought second hand. The panel isn't great, but I think it is mostly butchered by the poor software it is running. I think if Apple develops both, the end result could be amazing. I think there could be a market for TV's that will have long time software support and use a lot of trickery to get the most out of a panel. In fact, I think Apple can do the same as they are doing with phones: shipping mediocre hardware but spending a lot of money in software optimization, as for example you only need to develop software once to increase power inefficiency, rather than ship millions of bigger batteries. When they can manage to produce a single TV at scale, they can get away with using some older or non-flagship level OLED panels but get something nice out of it using software. Then they can maintain high margins like they can when they manufacture phones.
I think eventually they will make one, they are becoming an lifestyle brand from what I see, phone, watch, car, computer, glasses, tv all make sense as apple products
Most new smart tvs made by Samsung, and LG (per example) have the Apple TV+ with it along with RUclips, Netflix and whatever else they have. So like you said, Apple does not need to make a TV, you can get a Mac, I-Mac, Mac Mini, MacBook and hook it up to a decent size display, or your TV and run the Apple TV+ software. I can't wait to get my new I-Pad Pro that I ordered over a week ago, then I can watch Apple TV+ on it. Much easier than on an I-Phone. I also plan to get the larger I-Mac when it comes out, and will enjoy Apple TV+. When I get my I-Pad, I will be upgrading to Apple One, I already have I-Cloud, Apple Music and Apple Fitness +. It would be cheaper to do that, and I will have Apple TV+, Arcade and News along with what I already have and will have one charge instead of all these different charges. Apple has been in the news about their interest in making the Apple Car, and all electric self-driving car. An SUV style and allow me to drive it, and I would be intereted even more. I do have Apple Play in my current car. A Honda Fit, EXL.
the true reason why they dont make a smart tv is because the price wouldnt show up on some peoples devices because it would be higher than the 32 bit intiger limit
Two things I don’t agree with in this video: 1. 1:53 The argument that Apple aren’t interested in selling products that people won’t upgrade often isn’t true. They already make speakers, headphones and Apple TV which is something most users only replace if it breaks. 2. 5:12 Their area of expertise isn’t software exclusively. It’s both software and hardware Other than that, great video!
Why Apple didn’t make both the Set Top Boxes and a real TV at the same time, They can partner up with either Sony or Samsung and release it or make a built in app for 99% of the smart tv
Heck, my tv in my room hooked up to a VHS a player I've had m whole like, it might be getting up to 20 years old as it might be older than me. It's been giving me great service it's whole life, but it's sound output is dying and a bit raspy at moments. Soni might just get a sound bar or just use some old speaker system .
my dad is a firm believer in short term tv buying as when a new tv comes out he makes sure that he gets and we often get a bigger one every 1 or 2 years
So if Apple won't make a TV because of profit and long product cycles why would they bother with an electric car? Cars are kept almost as long as TVs, yes the styling would be unique but would the profit margin be there?
This is a really smart approach. I have a smart TV, and I use _none_ of the smart features on it. It's not even connected to the internet. It's just connected to my desktop computer via HDMI and used as a monitor, because my computer can do everything the TV can do, but better.

@@johnneshiem2291 that’s nice if you like all of that, me personally need a phone that takes nice pictures but don’t really need 8K or recording with all that many cameras. For me iOS is more intuitive and easier to use. I get overwhelmed by all the different features Android has and many apps that can’t be uninstalled and practically do the same thing. My aunts have both Samsung and being elderly don’t really understand how to use and it’s difficult for them, they ask me if I can’t help but sometimes it’s too difficult because there’s no easy way around doing some things.
Win-win
I used to have a big Samsung tv in my living room until something happened to it

Apple Explained: Why Apple won’t make a Smart TV
It's amazing to see Apple's business model in such a deep video essay. Their standard inspires other companies to take notes and apply it to their products, even outside the mobile technology industry.

The galaxy buds sold like gangbusters for a reason.

but the thing is apple is usually not up to date with new technology and when shopping for a tv everyone wants the best of the best hardware which is what Samsung is really good at
There already exist TVs with higher specs than that. Apple seems to be going the route of adding Airplay support to newer TVs instead of building their own sets.

Thank you Greg, waiting for this video since long time 😃👨🏻💻
I love how my first recomendation after this videos is "why apple should make an actual televison"
Everyone else: upgrades to a new PC/Phone every 2 years
me: hasnt upgraded to a new PC since 2010.
always first on your videos, your things are the best
Awesome video man. You know what i will like then to make a cellphone provider just like Google did.
So in a short sentence nutshell. They can’t make enough money from it to make it worthwhile because it would want someone to upgrade the tv every year like their devices.
Apple explained:Apple won't make a tv
Apple: *releases new tv*
While this does explain why Apple doesn’t make television sets, it poses the question why they didn’t go the Roku route and license the tvOS software to electronics manufacturers to be built into their TV set models on top of manufacturing its own standalone media devices.
Ooh, that's actually a cool idea.
Regards.

3:30 what I care about is size, whether it has AirPlay, and how easy it is to use.
In fact, I think Apple can do the same as they are doing with phones: shipping mediocre hardware but spending a lot of money in software optimization, as for example you
only need to develop software once to increase power inefficiency, rather than ship millions of bigger batteries.

Very good video greg !!!! 😍❤️
And what would they call it since they already have the apple tv
Probably something like apple glass
what tv does apple uses in their ads?
WAIT SO APPLE TV 4K WASN'T A TV??
the true reason why they dont make a smart tv is because the price wouldnt show up on some peoples devices because it would be higher than the 32 bit intiger limit
That one was creative
Two things I don’t agree with in this video:
1. 1:53 The argument that Apple aren’t interested in selling products that people won’t upgrade often isn’t true. They already make speakers, headphones and Apple TV which is something most users only replace if it breaks.
2. 5:12 Their area of expertise isn’t software exclusively. It’s both software and hardware
Other than that, great video!
An Apple television would be $3000 for 720p with only a power plug and a single usb c port
And mysteriously worsens over time whilst already being the worst in the industry lol
I feel like apples gonna make a standalone TV now
my dad is a firm believer in short term tv buying as when a new tv comes out he makes sure that he gets and we often get a bigger one every 1 or 2 years
If they produced a 70 inch version of those panels they use for apple today with no bezel and the rounded edge i would pay 4 grand for one.
So if Apple won't make a TV because of profit and long product cycles why would they bother with an electric car? Cars are kept almost as long as TVs, yes the styling would be unique but would the profit margin be there?
"It's much more difficult to use the same computer for 10 years than a TV"
My 2011 Macbook Pro that I've been using for 10 years: mmm... *cap*

This is a really smart approach. I have a smart TV, and I use _none_ of the smart features on it. It's not even connected to the internet. It's just connected to my desktop computer via HDMI and used as a monitor, because my computer can do everything the TV can do, but better.
