Question: when they were unloading the cans, how would they know if the can was empty or full? Was there a peephole or some kind of indicator?

The unloaded cans are lighter! The indicator for a full can would be your back...SCREAMING in pain! Oh... wait... you mean, when they are firing the guns, how do the powder passers know which cans to open to pull out powder bags. Good question. Never mind! :-)
