Wouldnt be surprised honestly. On my last car (civic) i did the rear badges and messed up the H badge because i didnt dry it properly on the inside so there was peel along the entire inside bottom of the badge.
Thing held up for almost 2 years with the peel through tons of car washes and when I finally got around to taking it off to redo it was a bitch to get off and i ended up using adhesive remover.

I just finished Plasti-dipping my wheels for the first time. I'd like to make a suggestion. After you're done and you're ready to take the trash bag or whatever you used to cover the caliper and rotor, try reaching around the wheel and pull the bag out from behind the wheel. This eliminates any possibility of tearing the Plasti-dip when you pull the bag through the spokes.

Taping is such a waste of time, not to mention you now have adhesive all over everything. Cut up a few trash bags and stuff them between the spokes. Wala! Takes no time, no sticky surfaces and everyone has trash bags

Might want to mention to clean the wheels real well before paint. Also you can use a metal file or even a small 4" grinding wheel to smooth out the curb rash on the rim before paint. ☺

DipYourCar actually washes their dipped cars with a pressure washer.
Plastidip is just like real paint, except that it peels off when you want it too.
I plastidipped by buddy's charger, the entire car, about 2 months ago. looks great and he washes it all the time.

I bought three cans and painted the rims on my BWM Convertible black.

  • @GunTotinHippie

I used trash bags to cover the brake discs and dipped my wheels still on the truck. It came out awesome. Took me a little under 2 cans to do wheels, badges, and license plate covers. Plus tape the total investment was $20.07 plus a couple hours and some beer.

I have over 10,000 miles on my plastidiped rims, the only place that is messed up is in around the lug nuts when I rotated my tires I chipped it in a few spots but you cant tell with the lug nuts in. Over all very impressed, only downside is you have to be very careful when washing them.

    • @BlueOvals24

Nope. I have drums in the rear so I didnt worry too much about paint, just wrapped the bag around it a little. For the disks, I just wrapped the bag tightly around the rotor. As long as there isnt much wind, those bags wont go anywhere and they cover the rotor completely

Yes, that's the point of PlastiDip, if you don't like it then just peel it off. This goes for their other products as well such as the glossifier for that glossy look or the pearlizer for the pearl look. This applies to any surface...I'm thinking myself of doing my rims first and eventually the whole car. Hope this helps.

I dipped my Chrome 24 inch wheels Bennett Bogard from Dipyourcar told me it would take 5 cans. i ended up using 8 cans. the white doesn't cover good. but finished product turned out NICE! suggest taping off the tire on Low pros or just spray the crap out of them with a nice thick coat and it will peel better. if your going to do big rims buy the spray gun and get the dip in gallon form. the spray can bottle will kill your spray finger!!

I plasti dipped my rims 2 days ago, and it looked great. But today I noticed it was peeling on almost all of the wheels. I did exactly what you did on here. Light coats, up to about 4 coats. But right where the weight balance was it started peeling and around the lip. I went around the lip like you did but still it peeled. I redid 2 of my rims today, hopefully it will stay on this time.

Thanks. I added a final thicker coat and the finish is smoother.I definitely agree with you about making sure the can doesn't get too low. I think there was a place where aerosol w/ no PlastiDip came out and it made the finish pretty bumpy. The final thicker coat helped smooth that area some, but still not as smooth as the other areas. I was an easy way to black out my rims and isn't permanent.

Depending on the dish and surface area...but it took me a little less that 3 cans for my 19s and I sprayed a lot on there

@evergtz95 i have plastidip on the front bumper of my 05 forester xt. ive been through 4 car washes so far and it still looks like i just put the plasti dip on. its very durable stuff. the washes had the spinning brushes that beat the front of ur car, too

If you spray it on thick enough, yes, it will peel off in sheets relatively easily. I think if it peels off in little bits, it wasn't put on thick enough. It also shouldn't mess up the original finish of your rims.

2-3 cans for 4 wheels if you do 4-5 coats per wheel. No sanding. Let dry for 15 min or so between coats.

You can also put notecards between the edge of the rim/tire

I literally JUST got done plastidipping my 2003 Maxima, if you're just doing the wheels, you'll be fine with 2 cans. Get 3 just in case... Also, you should use it on your emblems, I plastidipped my nissan emblem, maxima emblem and my SE emblem. I did the grill on my car too. I'd say pick 3 cans up and you'll be fine.

Use trashbags. Thread them behind the rims but infront of the brakes/calipers. make certain the brake components are covered and the trashbags are not touching the rims where you will be spraying. Once the PlastiDip has dried, carefully remove the trashbags.

Take a small blade and trace it around the edge of your rim Inbetween the tire itself and the rim, that way it separates te two sides, then peel off the river from the tire

I will be getting a new car soon, and would consider PD for my wheels. A couple questions though based on off-car work: 1. wheel nut seats: masking might be hard, is it easy enough to take off to ensure proper seating of the wheel nuts? 2. maintenance: when shops repair flats, or you change your tires and reballance, is it easy to touch up? 3: how easy is PD to remove?

Great job Fonzie. I like your all-business / responsibility approach in showing the excellent properties of PD, as well as your own expertise. Thanks for these very helpful videos.

I just plasti dipped my WHOLE car. It turned out GREAT! I am soo happy with it. I was originally planning to get it re-painted so I sanded the whole car down with 400 wet. I used to work in a high end body shop so sanding cars and prepping them is not a big deal. I am curios to see how long this will last. I put on 7 good coats, do you think the plasti dip will last longer if I wiped it down once a week with some sort of protector such as Amor all?

It's plastidip, not paint; therefore there is no need to sand or prime, it's not meant to be permanent. That being said it's held up quite well on my G6 18" stock rims, over 10,000 miles and still holding up well.

Mainly because if you want to sell the rims later you can most likely just Peel it off. Its not completely permanent like paint.

I use index cards and place them around the rim when I dippped the wheels of my mustang, it helps a lot; as well as use a grocery bag to protect the discs and calipers

Go to kijiji, some people will buy at wholesale prices from online sources and re-sell them for cheaper. I got my 7 cans for 11 each. Meeting up is much more inconvenient than going to a store though.

ok I found out. You need the one that doesn't say vinyl. I asked a few people who did it on their rims. so basically the one that say black rubber coating spray. And I don't know about the color variations e.g gold. I'm only doing black.

  • @TheBBallEnthusiast

I'm definitely taking my wheels off. It's more of a hassle to wrap your brakes with the wheels on the car are rather than to just take the wheels off. And at least you don't need to mask your wheels. BTW, I have a flint Mica Scion TC and I want gold rims. Do I just buy the white base dip and the gold metallizer?

i had a question, if you dip your rims without removing them, isn't there a chance that gravity causes the paint to drip down?

You sure you don’t need primer or Sand paper before the paint? Some say it’s necessary.. but you did as fine job without sanding the alloys or even using the primer ..
