Another great way to mask off the tires(if you don't have the dip release) ive done many times in the past whether it was plasti dip or spray painting wheels. Take 2 decks (I believe you need 2) of playing cards and stick them in between the very edge/lip of the rim and tire then overlap the cards around the entire wheel. It greatly reduces overspray on the tires while you spray paint the wheels.
@@Bvsterrrrrrrrr ah really didn’t think they was that cheap. But still index cards are better they’re bigger and you use less of them for the same thing and less chance of over spray . It’s just the way I’ve always done it.

PSA about leaving wheels on the car or not: I decided to dip the wheels on my white Elise a nice matte black. As it's quick and easy for me to remove the wheels, I took them off for easier cleaning and access for spraying. Here's the problem: the space around the bolts is so tight that while putting the dipped wheels back on the car, the wrench touched the dip just enough to turn and tear it off. All the work was for nothing and I had to remove all of the beautiful fresh dip. If your wheels are designed in a way that there's not much space around the bolts and there's a risk of touching the dip while wrenching them back in, do NOT remove your wheels for dipping. I hope this will save somebody the trouble I went through.
Man you helped stop my life from being ruined because I would've done exactly that. Not only that, the plasti-dip gear would've cost me almost as much as a new set of rims, so I may as well just buy another set of rims in the color I want.
The warm water tip is something I wish I had when I did my first wheel dip, it makes a world of difference, especially in December in Ohio, even in the garage. It goes from a splatter-finish spray into something that behaves a lot like regular spraypaint.
This is really helpful. Idk why so many people hate on dipping the wheels. When you do it right like you emphasize, it saves hundreds and even thousands depending on the wheels you have if you get then powder coated
The best I’ve seen regarding the prep. However, what about the lug nuts? Mask em? How well will a socket fit over several layers of coating? Thanks again.
i wouldn't be concerned with fit as much as the dip coming off whenever you go to take the wheel off. Or put the wheel back on for that matter if you took it off to apply the dip
I wish I had this video when I plastidipped my wheels. The tip about not laying the wheels flat would have been incredibly helpful in not getting a textured look on some of the parts of the wheel.
@@hello-ef4bn Yeah, I definitely didn't have the funds for that to redo it. I just left it be but now after having the tires replaced a few times, the plastidip is lifted and the underneath is rusty, so it'd be more of a pain to redo it.

After moving it, I was amazed how little coverage some parts of the spokes had, even though I tried to cover them with the first few coats. Admittedly, the can is much more likely to spray huge particles of product if you're using it at an aggressive angle, which is the only way to get good coverage on all surfaces during the early coats.
Depending on the style and design of the wheel - it's going to be necessary to rotate the wheel half way through the coats. We cover this in the Complete Guide video. There's no way you can hit every spoke properly without rotation.
Dipyourcar shows that in another video. They said to move the car half way through the job so the bottom spokes are exposed. Just be careful not to jam the plastic bag into your brakes.
MrRangerZr1 I did watch the complete guide and knew I'd have to move the car. I just wish I had moved it earlier and more often, actually, not just once mid-way through the process. You also make a good point about the bags. The space between my caliper and the wheels is so small that the bags were essentially jammed between them, which messed things up a bit both when moving the car and removing the bags. In any case, I have useful experience for next time, and I do plan to redo my wheels soon.

Hello, your video was very helpful but I have one question. In your final product the BMW emblems weren't plasti dipped, how did you remove the plasti dip around the emblems? Thank you
2 Quick Questions: 1. What happens when someone takes the lugnuts off---Does it start an ugly uneven peeling that makes the nuts look half/silver half/black? Those impact wrenches are brutal. 2. Do you always spray over the center cap and then peel it off, or remove center cap first? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
use a stencil or sharp tool and cut out the area of Plastidip where the lug sits to that it will not twist and pull the rest of material from the surrounding area.
I used the Anthracite Grey for my winter rims. I sprayed my rims prior to the tires being installed on the rims. I knew that as soon as the impact gun came into contact with the lug nuts, it would immediately ruin/tear the Plasti-Dip from the chrome nuts. Thus, I went out and purchased some black lug nuts instead. For myself, I think the black lug nuts look absolutely awesome set into the Anthracite Grey rims!!
@@honoredsage4946 Yes, the black was just coated on the lug nuts that I purchased. The first winter changeover, my mechanic got the tires mounted without scratching up the coating on the lug nuts too much. But after the changeover back to summers, then again to winters, the coating on the lug nuts were at the point that - with winter salt and elements taking their toll - they were all rusted up by the end of the 2nd winter. But, for myself, to have the look of the black lug nuts set into the dark grey rims, I will gladly shell out $50 (Canadian) every two years to replace the nuts with new ones.
How well do the lug nuts hold up when you take the car to get the tires rotated? What about when you need new tires and the wheels have to be removed from the tires and balanced, etc...Do I have to do the whole process over again?

Man, it seems like such a simple thing but I have always messed up spray painting things. Your tips on how to actually paint with the light layer and then heavy coats is great, thanks for this video.
I learned the hard way that warming the cans up before spraying is essential when you live in New England. Cans went from spraying thick chunks of goo to spraying a very fine mist. Good thing it was peelable!
When you need to take off your wheels and rotate your tires I imagine that the coating will come off around the lugnuts and perhaps get scuffed in some spots. Is it easy to touch up without it looking like it's been touched up, or do you really need to take it all off and redo the entire wheel
@entegar3 yea, I'm only asking because I want to keep my branded center cap, but I can't seem to find a video that doesn't spray over it. This video was the exception, but it's been edited out for some reason. I guess I'll try masking it before I paint.
it's gonna peel off due the the process required for mounting and dismounting. While factory painted finishes go unharmed, the dip will start to peel and get damaged which is basically unavoidable.
I used this same color (Anthracite Grey) on my winter rims. I have gone through 4 winters now of swapping them out and the Plasti-Dip looks just as great as when I initially did it. The only problem area was the lug nuts. The dip peeled off the chrome lug nuts on the first rims changeover. To rectify this problem, I purchased black lug nuts instead. The black lug nuts added a super nice contrast to the Anthracite Grey rims!!
Dumb question(s) What happens when I get my tires rotated every 5,000 miles? Will the recessed area around the lug nuts be all scuffed up when the socket wrench is applied? When this is done the balancing weights are most always moved around, so how do you retouch?
I'm going to do this with the wheels off the car. Any suggestions for masking off the lug holes, wheel center bore, and the valve stem, so the dip doesn't peel when getting new tires or changing a flat?
Stupid question. Seriously considering attempting this, so I want to make sure I thought of everything. If I spray the rims on the car, what happens when I want to rotate my tires and have to take off the lug nuts? A. Will pulling the lug nuts that seem to get sprayed along with the rims, pull the plasti dip off the rims, and B. If it does not ruin the paint job on the rims, will my lug nuts need to be sprayed again, as I imagine they would get chewed up by the tire iron?
what about the BMW sign on the wheel? i noticed it was black but changed to the normal color however he didn't show how he took the paint off the BMW sign part of the wheel.
Dan C not true. It sticks to everything. He simply pealed it off the cap. When 2 surfaces meet, most of the time there is a gap and when you spray it doesn’t bridge over. Making it simple to peal it off the desired spot.

Hey quick question... I dipped my wheels but when I installed them back on my truck a couple of the lugnuts caught the plasti dip and started peeling it up. Can I patch it or do I have to start over? Thanks
Great video. Only question I have is about the lug nuts. After plati dipping as shown can you still get a socket on them? As it seems coating them would change the MM size. Is there any problems with that?
I have 2 questions in regards to dipping wheels while still on the vehicle? 1. What do you do about over spary on the car? 2. If you dip rims while still on the vehicle the lug nuts will be covered in dip, will removing the wheels ruin the dip on the rims?
What about the Lugnuts once their plasty dip over does the lug wrench still fit over them and if it does wouldn't it kind a bang them up a bit trying to loosen and tighten them.
Plastidip is not staying on anything you throw a wrench on. If you're going to remove the wheels you better try your best to seperate the lugnut layer from the rim because it'll just yeet the whole thing off as soon as you turn the wrench. If you apply it with the wheels off then stick a ball of masking tape in each hole because once you go to put the wheel back on it'll rip it all off once the lugnut makes contact and turns if you don't. Some great stuff though don't be fooled. Looks great and has held up about over a year now for me.
What is that color called? Is it matte black? Gun metal? And what about undercoating, do you need one? Third question, can I put the cans in front of a heater instead, why soak them in warm water?
I can only answer one of those questions, but soaking in warm water is a more ambient heat and more even. Heaters are very uneven in the way they put out heat, so they won't heat uniformly. Warm water is also quicker. I'm not a professional painter, but I'm a hobbyist with an airbrush and a lot of painting experience.
What about the lug nuts and the piece to unscrew for you to.put air in your tires. Will the plastic dip come off when you have them unscrew at some point when tire pressure is low, change springs or rotors
Nice form with the spray can, like a real paint gun. Move-press to spray-stop spray- stop moving. In that order. It will stop build up at the start or finish and give an even coat. This was the 5 video I watched and all of the others laid the wheels down and or didn't have the proper spray technique. Awesome lesson and tips!
That's why I took my tires off. I left the chrome lug nuts and dipped the rims. The chrome looks very nice to counter the black and it should minimize/eliminate damage if I have to take the tire off.
I used the Anthracite Grey on my winter rims. I knew that any plasti-dip on the lug nuts would be ruined as soon as the impact gun hit them. So I purchased a set of black lug nuts. Personally, I think that black lug nuts look frickin' sweet set into the Anthracite Grey rims!!
I bought this product from Fonzi a few years ago. I must say it worked great and was easy. I used for about 6 months then bought new rims. The product still looked good just wanted dif rims. It was also fun and way dif then painting.
I like this technique instead of removing each tire and laying it flat. I would've covered the tires and car panels. Other than that, it looks great. Also, I prefer a gloss black color.
My advice would be to remove the wheels. And while your wheels are off, do yourself a favor and paint your crust calipers. No sense in having a sharp looking car and wheels and then show off rusty calipers. I just paint mine black. No need to accentuate stock calipers. Red also gets dirty and gunky pretty fast, so black is the easiest color to maintain. Plenty of videos out there on how to do it. Plus you won't get overspray all over your car. Don't think for a second that it only gets on the sidewalls. The things you are wearing a respirator to protect your lungs from is also floating around and landing on your car. I take the wheels off in the drive way and paint them in the garage. Either way you do it, this is a great video on how to use the product. Seriously, man... You do have the best how to videos on RUclips. Keep it up!
Yes, one of the nice selling points of plastic dip is it peels off. However if it is on for a longer time it is sometimes better to respray and then peel off as anything over a year does make the product not as peelable. Depending on conditions.
I was wondering if there was a way to have a deep black finish with a colored sheen to it? Like it's black but when the sunlight hits the car at a certain angle you can get a colored reflection. Would a colored juice in the clear coat on a black dip have that effect our would it have to be a very fine flake in the clear coat? I'm hoping for a black car with a purple shift, I guess.
Do you just spray right over the lug nuts and leave it? I notice in the how to part you sprayed right over the center cap and M logo but then in the photo shoot those areas were peeled off. So I’m wondering do you also do something with the lug nuts?
Question. Why did it turn grey after I put glossifiers on. And how can I solve it? It look terrible now. Please help. I had 6 coats of black plasti dip. Waited over night to dry completely and just applied two coats of glossifiers.
what do we do about the lug nuts since eventually we will have to take those off do we apply dip release to those as well or is it better to just take the tire off the car if possible
One can per wheel for a standard color like Black, Anthracite (used in this video), etc. There are color however that require a topcoat like gloss or pearl. Once you go to a wheel larger than 20", more than one can per wheel may be necessary.
So when you eventually need to take the wheel off, will the dip come off the lug nuts? I would think so. Same with the rim edge when removing the tires?
WOOOOOW Who does NOT have the tools to remove the Wheels from the Car? Every car/truck SHOULD have a Jack and Breaker Bar for Changing the Tires should you get a Flat No One should every say they can't do this, if they do THEY SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING I can not wait to do my truck
And this ladies and gentlemen is the classy way of showing the capabilities of a product.
No need to bash other products.

Great video. Only question I have is about the lug nuts. After plati dipping as shown can you still get a socket on them? As it seems coating them would change the MM size. Is there any problems with that?
the dip will rip off the first time you put a socket on them
Did You also spray the inside of the rim ? Or was it just left the original Color ?
Up to you, if you do want to spray the barrel going to need extra cans
Your making a killing of plasti dip congrats
I’m a regular car painter lol
I have 2 questions in regards to dipping wheels while still on the vehicle?
1. What do you do about over spary on the car?
2. If you dip rims while still on the vehicle the lug nuts will be covered in dip, will removing the wheels ruin the dip on the rims?
Fozi, I thought you had move the car forward a bit to get access to the blind spot which you couldn't see normally?
Looks great and has held up about over a year now for me.
after you dip over lugnuts... next time you take those off... what's gonna happen?
Don't dip your lug nuts, mask then with painters tape.
How did you get the Plasti Dip off of the BMW emblem, along with an M emblem, on the rim?
Get a toothpick and pick at it before it cures
use the diprelease on the eblem
waterside 😂😂😂
Tape or use a toothpick the minute you finish.
waterside .... nooooo.... don't use your brain will be to messy, better use a toothpick..... 😁😋😜
How durable is it on lug nuts?
Ok, what about the lug nuts? Your gong to have to take the tire off at some point.
Can’t find one video of the wheel off application, I want to do it wheel off
I wish I could still sit on my feet like that. Those limber years are long gone.
I bought this product from Fonzi a few years ago. I must say it worked great and was easy. I used for about 6 months then bought new rims. The product still looked good just wanted dif rims. It was also fun and way dif then painting.
You should start a fitness channel too, I’m trying to get biceps like that 😂
Does spraying the lug nuts not matter? Wouldn’t the plasti dip get ruined when removing the tires?
Really Fonzi, you're going to release this a day after I did my wheels. I'm 3 hits in on things I f*cked up on lol
what were the first 2
I like this technique instead of removing each tire and laying it flat. I would've covered the tires and car panels. Other than that, it looks great. Also, I prefer a gloss black color.
Really informative Fonzi, thanks and hope it's helps everyone out
Fonzi, lol
How does the plasti dip hold up on the lug nuts when they are removed and replaced?
How much time between coats.
10-15 minutes....and the can must be kept warm during dipping......
Keep it up!
Why is this frowned upon this is awesome easy and pain free I’m going to order mine soon
Haters are just dumb and will bash anything they can. The great result in heaps of high-res closeup videos on this channel speak for themselves 😎👌
If you mess up or don't like it, can u remove the dip?
Yes, one of the nice selling points of plastic dip is it peels off. However if it is on for a longer time it is sometimes better to respray and then peel off as anything over a year does make the product not as peelable. Depending on conditions.
I was wondering if there was a way to have a deep black finish with a colored sheen to it? Like it's black but when the sunlight hits the car at a certain angle you can get a colored reflection. Would a colored juice in the clear coat on a black dip have that effect our would it have to be a very fine flake in the clear coat? I'm hoping for a black car with a purple shift, I guess.
Hi. Did you ever find out the answer to your question? I want something similar and was wondering the same.
Obsidian black changes colour in light
There is the chameleon paint as well you could do a coat on top of the black it may work
Did you spray over the emblem and then peeled it off? Doesn't this thing get ruined once you rotate your tires??
He is fine!!! I just need to retouch my wheels but I’m going to do it myself, it was way too expensive to have it done!!
Do you just spray right over the lug nuts and leave it? I notice in the how to part you sprayed right over the center cap and M logo but then in the photo shoot those areas were peeled off. So I’m wondering do you also do something with the lug nuts?
Did this dude just say "you get a brake-masking bag for each wheel"? hahahahaha
Question. Why did it turn grey after I put glossifiers on. And how can I solve it? It look terrible now. Please help. I had 6 coats of black plasti dip. Waited over night to dry completely and just applied two coats of glossifiers.
Getting kinda bossy there Fonzarelli😁
What if anything can you do if you wanna dip your wheels but you have a bit of curb rash ? Is it just not gonna come out right or what ?
Can't wait to plasti dip my bmw! The red rum video got me totally in ! Great tutorials
Since you sprayed over the lugs what happens when you remove the wheels? Will the dip start to fray off?
I just did mine today and it looks amazing! Easy peasy! Thanks for the tips!
Hi Ujjal How cans did you have to use and how many times did spray each wheel and when do you add gloss
what do we do about the lug nuts since eventually we will have to take those off do we apply dip release to those as well or is it better to just take the tire off the car if possible
Wait so one can per wheel? Or no?
One can per wheel for a standard color like Black, Anthracite (used in this video), etc. There are color however that require a topcoat like gloss or pearl. Once you go to a wheel larger than 20", more than one can per wheel may be necessary.
@@dipyourcar will it be enough for an 18" wheel?????i bought four cans of black,but....how many coats can be spreaded on the wheel with one can?????
So when you eventually need to take the wheel off, will the dip come off the lug nuts? I would think so. Same with the rim edge when removing the tires?
You thought correctly, buy an extra can for the inevitable.
WOOOOOW
Who does NOT have the tools to remove the Wheels from the Car?
Every car/truck SHOULD have a Jack and Breaker Bar for Changing the Tires should you get a Flat
No One should every say they can't do this, if they do THEY SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING
I can not wait to do my truck
what should I do if i don't want to mask the badge on my wheel, hard to make tape perfectly round
when you watch through the entire video because you enjoy the music during the walkaround ;) especially at 12:05 lol
i do the same lol
What happens when i need to rotate my tires? Like will the lug nuts look like hell after?
thats my question, i think best bet is to take the tires off, stand them up and spray them with the lugs off and get some black lugs
