Rod said that when he wrote this song he couldn't envision George's face in his mind's eye. Yet he he knew he had known him. Such a beautiful elegy and Rod Stewart at his best. Thank you for this video.
Wow, I can’t believe you’re doing this song. This was one of those (infrequent) markers in my childhood that made a lonely little gay boy feel seen, and it also gave my mother an opportunity to express support for its message, which would obviously be very important to me in later years when I came out. Good on Rod Stewart, and good on you, Shawn!
One of his best IMO, and pretty bold to release this in 1976, things were much different. Always loved that Rod recorded an important track like this - haunting and beautiful....and it even went Top 30 here in the U.S. Man, lots of feels listening to this again. Great reaction, I think you nailed the meaning of it.
@michaelfletcher9640 there are several others that I’ve searched for, and watched. I was excited to see Shawn reacting to it. A heartbreakingly beautiful tribute 💔
Rod dropped this from his live shows for many years but when I saw him in NY in 2017 I was pleasantly surprised he included it. This video is like a masterclass in how to play to the camera.
Reminds me so much of a day friend I lost in mid 80s. Lot of these lyrics are very similar except not murdered but his own suicide. I've always loved this sad tune to help myself remember friend Kevin D...thanks Rod and your reaction Shawn...👍🏳️🌈💓
I remember this song well but haven't heard it in many years, probably more because it barely got into the top 40 for a few weeks than because of the subject matter. I was working in the Naval Broadcasting Service at the time and we got a copy, though it came with an "alert" for possibly inappropriate lyrics. I liked it and stateside DJs that prerecorded shows for military radio, like Wolfman Jack and Charlie Tuna, played it on their shows. It's a sad but beautiful song about an all too common occurence at that time. If this song had more impact then, maybe Matthew Shepard would still be here, but I guess the world at large wasn't ready yet. Thanks for listening to Rod telling Georgie's story and remember, so we don't go back there again.
you ought to hear van morrison tell us about madame george - from astral weeks. highly recommended now that you've met george. thanks for playing this - hadn't heard it in years.
I've been a fan of Rod's since EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY (1971) , and I don't recall this one at all! Never liked him much once he abandoned Rock and went Pop/Glam.

He took a big chance on this one. Total respect for him.

BBC radio banned this song when it was released, shame! This has to be my favorite song from Rod Stewart 💙✌️
