She'll "get it" in a few years. Emotions as deep as this song don't come easily. Right now it's just another pretty old song. In 10 years, that beautiful longing will touch her heart.

I was 8 yrs old in 1965 and saw this on The Andy Williams Show. I still say this is the greatest live performance of a song ever. Microphones were like that back then and are probably better than the mics now. Old microphone's are in high demand from many current artist's.
I'm not aware of Elvis recording this in 1961. I know he did it right before his death in 1977.
Hey dad, make sure you turn your daughter into the greatest and most influential band in history. Ask her if she knows who that is.
It would be The Beatles! That should be a must in her music journey.
Very smart daughter you have there. Cool kid!

I grew up with the Righteous Brothers n got to meet Bill Medley years ago n he loved his fans. This man is Bobby Hatfield tenor n they said his last note many women cant hit it. One of their famous songs that was number 1 for a long time." You've Lost That Loving Feeling " Righteous Brothers were very good friends of Elvis. Elvis did his version of _You've Lost That Loving Feeling. Bobby died years ago but Bill is still singing in his 80's.

Just here to spice up the algorithm a bit, because you two are so refreshing and fun to watch.
Zoey, you are intelligent, perceptive and expressive beyond your years. I hope you truly enjoy doing this because your personality really excels via this medium.
And Shawn, we're about the same age... and kudos to you, you're doing life the right way. I understand this medium shows just a tiny insight into the people behind a camera, but your parental connection seems so complete...
Just keep doing what you two do, people will keep coming back, more will join, more will enjoy.

If you noticed, that tiny Mic had a long cord that was attached to a sound system. All mic's were like that and could be removed from their height adjustable stands, back in the day. Now mic's have batteries inside and that's why they are much larger and don't have cords. The sound is actually better with the old mic's. Its like the difference between listening to music through an electronic device or playing a record on a stereo record player hooked up to speakers. Once you hear the difference you realize the old way was better. The modern way is much more convenient but not better sound wise.
Bobby covered this song that was first done in a 1955 prison movie called "Unchained". It was more of a sad and longing for his wife song, sung by a prisoner. After 3 other recordings of the song Bobby turned it into the beautiful, hopeful love song that it is today.. Bobby Hatfield owns this song, it is his forever. Elvis' version of the song was recorded in 1977, on his last album and sung by him at his last concert a few weeks before he died. His version is very good and sung in his style. Bobby's original recording of " Unchained Melody" was a top song on the charts back in '65. This recording was used in the movie "Ghost" ( in the pottery scene and at the end of the movie). Because of this movie the recording got a second life. New generations heard it and it went back onto the charts. "Unchained Melody" is the most covered song, with well over 650+ covers. Now its getting na third life on reaction channels. ...... Your daughter did s good job with her reaction. 👍

While there is no denying this is an incredible vocal performance, most don't know the story behind the song.
In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film Unchained (released in 1955). North had a melody he had written in the 1930s and composed and recorded the score when he was asked to write a song based upon the movie's theme. North asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics. After first refusing, Zaret and North together wrote "Unchained Melody. Zaret refused the producer's request to include the word "unchained" in his lyrics. The song eventually became known as the "Unchained Melody" even though the song does not actually include the word "unchained". Instead, Zaret chose to focus on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time".
"Unchained Melody" comes from the film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family.
Knowing this background, the version of this song by Angelina Jordan, at the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize concert truly fits the occasion. Narges Mohammadi was this years' recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Narges was, at the time of this tribute, on a hunger strike while imprisoned in Iran, for being an activist for women's rights. Her two children spoke on her behalf at this event. Most of the performers were Iranian.
We know Angelina's grandmother, Mery Zamani, grew up in Iran and was a prodigy for painting and poetry. We can imagine the conversations Mery had with Angelina about Narges. This performance had to be extremely meaningful to Angelina and her family, and I believe Angelina evoked the tremendous emotion of longing love Narges has for her twin children and for all the women in Iran.
Here is the link to the performance. ruclips.net/video/XxduGSjAJCo/видео.htmlsi=jvy-8yqtMzI5DHHb

Great reaction from an adorable father / daughter team! And speaking of family: Further to Andy's comment, Narges' two 17yo twin children had explained moments before Angelina's performance that they hadn't seen their mother in 10 years; her daughter said she couldn't even remember the sound of her mother's voice. Narges' family has suffered greatly outside of prison and in exile in Paris, while their mother/wife suffered in prison.....all on behalf of others. The twins and their father were in the room when Angelina gave her incredibly delicate and moving performance. You owe it to yourselves to give it a listen.

These father-daughter reaction videos have been so fun to watch! It's nice to see them have such a great time while reacting to different kinds of music. Pretty much everyone knows about this song due to this song being used in the movie called Ghost starring Patrick Swayze, Whoopi Goldberg, and Demi Moore from 1990. Like Andy, I think the performance by Angelina Jordan, a child jazz prodigy who is now 18 years old, was outstanding when she sang this last year where she was asked to perform once again at the Nobel Peace Prize concert. She is the first performer under the age of 18 to be asked back to perform for this prestigious event. Shawn and Zoe, you guys should really check it out!

Live performance on the “Andy Williams Show” in 1965. Andy Williams is the one in the middle. This was the first time he had performed it on TV. His family was in the audience and he was fighting a bit of a cold. This is when you needed to have talent. Bobby Hatfield was a counter tenor. The song is from a movie from 1955 called “Unchained”. It’s been covered by a lot of singers, but I believe this is considered the definitive version.

It's funny that you said, "I don't know the dynamics of microphones...", because there are different types of microphones and the most common one is known as a "dynamic microphone". The kind they were using in the video is a "condenser microphone" which operates differently and, though they are often smaller than dynamic mics, they usually have better sound quality. They aren't used much in live performances these days because they are not as rugged as dynamic mics. Condensers are used more in recording studios, along with "ribbon microphones" which are also high sound quality, but more delicate.

Neither thought it would be a hit because originally it was only to be an album track. Hits came from single releases. They both did solos on albums and in shows; Bobby brought it to the studio to be his album solo. After it was recorded, Phil Spector decided to put it on the B-side of the single Hung on You.

I've seen this video many times and it always affects me the way it did with your Dad as it likely reminds us of the lives we've lived and the relationships we've had. So this song was from the movie Unchained about a man in prison.
I think your daughter will maybe change her stance on music, affecting her emotionally once she falls in love.
Also, it's not true that Bill didn't think it would be a hit. They both did solos on albums, and this was Bobby's. Phil Spector, their producer, put it on the B side of their single Hung On You. DJs turned it over and played Unchained Melody instead. So it became a hit.

Zoe - This version of "Unchained Melody" has melted the hearts of young women for generations! That would include your mother, grandmothers, and great grandmothers. There are more than 500 known cover recordings, including one by Elvis (very close to the end of his short life), but this performance by Bobby Hatfield is widely regarded as the definitive version. The song was written for a 1955 movie called "Unchained," but has been used in other movies -- most notably, the 1990 Oscar-winner "Ghost."

    According to Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unchained_Melody
    Origin of song
In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film Unchained (released in 1955). North had a melody he had written in the 1930s and composed and recorded the score when he was asked to write a song based upon the movie's theme. North asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics. After first refusing, Zaret and North together wrote "Unchained Melody." Zaret refused the producer's request to include the word "unchained" in his lyrics. The song eventually became known as the "Unchained Melody" even though the song does not actually include the word "unchained". Instead, Zaret chose to focus on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time". The film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family. The song has an unusual harmonic device as the bridge ends on the tonic chord rather than the more usual dominant chord.
Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack and performs an abbreviated version in the film. Playing one of the prisoners, he sings it, accompanied by another prisoner on guitar, while other prisoners listen sadly. With Duncan singing the vocals, the song was nominated in 1956 for 1955's Oscars, but the Best Song award went to the hit song "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing".
William Stirrat, an electrical engineer, claimed to have written the lyrics as a teenager in 1936 under the pen name "Hy Zaret" only to have North use the uncredited words in the 1955 original. The case went to court and the dispute was resolved completely in favor of the real Zaret (the one born Hyman Zaritsky) who continued to receive all royalties.

Loads of singers have sung this song but none do it better than Bobby Hatfield. The studio version was used in the movie 'Ghost' and was great but this live version is stupendous. He had a cold, his parents were in the audience watching him perform live for the first time and he was sick before he went on. Look at the end when he hits the high notes he does not contort his face like other singers do when they hit a high note. He just bites his lip and smiles as if to say I nailed it.

Unchained Melody was a song from a so-so prison movie in 1955 called "Unchained." Many covered this song before Bobby. But Bobby has the best version, very soulful, heartfelt, and stunning control and range, interpretation. Elvis' version is great in the live concerts in the 1970's, but he last one before he died was just plain alarming and sad, the shape he was in , voice powerful but shaky vibrato, on all those drugs to pump hm up for the performance etc. They are two different types of singers. But for me Bobby's was the ultimate version...better than his studio version. Make America's Got Talent The Voice, etc, and all those shows sound like crap.

The thing I can't figure out is, how can she look exactly like you, but at the same time, be so much prettier than you?

Great reaction! You two have such a great connection.
Andy Williams was the announcer. He is a fantastic singer also. Known for his song "Moon River". One of my favorite songs of his that I never see requested is "Happy Heart". I'll bet neither one of you have never heard it.

For her to see you tear up a little bit I guarantee you gives her a new respect for you and if you haven't done it already you need to introduce her to Diana ankudinova.

A great song and not a autotune machine in sight. They definitely don't make songs like this any more.

At one point, Elvis and the Righteous Brothers were appearing in Vegas at the same time.
I think Bill was joking about the "hit" thing.

Early on in the RBs career and Elvis was in California making a movie, he would bring his crew to see them. Apparently, one time, it was at a bowling alley.
Edit: You are correct; he was joking.

The "official" version doesn't have him hitting those highest notes. I'm not going to choose a favorite version but yours is my favorite reaction to this song.
You like range? Avi Kaplan, formerly the bass for Pentatonix, sings with Peter Hollens, RUclips's master of track overlay, with "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair".

While this RB is the popular version, I've always preferred LeAnn Rimes cover version found mostly on the 1997 compilation album: "Unchained Melody: The Early Years". I just find that the song sounds much better when a woman sings it. For me, it doesn't sound real when a guy sings it since it is not how a man usually expresses his emotions. Instead it sounds like how a woman would fantasize how a man would express himself towards her. But if women want that fantasy, then all the more power to them.
For me, my preferred male sung love songs are "Something" (The Beatles), "Time In A Bottle" (Jim Croce), "Your Song" (Elton John), "Maybe I'm Amazed" (McCartney), "Mandolin Wind" (Rod Stewart), "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" (Rod Stewart's version). "You're In My Heart" (Rod Stewart). "I Don't Want to Miss A Thing" (Aerosmith). "Be With You" (Enrique Iglesias). "Best of My Love" (Eagles). "Sea of Love" (The Honey Drippers). "Crazy Love" (Poco). "You Are the Woman" (Firefall). "Baby Blue" (Badfinger). "You're My Home" (Billy Joel). "Iris" (The Goo Goo Dolls). "El Paso" (Marty Robbins). "You'll Be In My Heart" (Phil Collins). "Keep On Loving You" (REO Speedwagon). And "Hey There Delilah" (The Baseballs' cover version).

This is excellent, but they do have a better version with both of them singing ~ Andy Williams down played his own singing,& was a star in his own right~ BTW the two of you are settling into a great rhythm ~ Your presentation makes it so much more entertaining

According to the information I've learned, Elvis did not write any of his songs and the Righteous Brothers, I think (but don't quote me) were in a similar situation. Some singers are just that, singers and they perform songs that other people have written. Motown might be a good example of a style where they had a staff of writers who produced songs for the individuals and groups to perform. It definitely wouldn't always be that way; however, there are plenty of examples of a singer simply buying a song from a writer to perform.
I remember, when I was Zoe's age, being realy surprised that one music group could even play another group's music which is funny to me now because I understand that the music is the tools with which songs are constructed. Live and learn.

I think the "wouldnt be a hit" thing was just a joke that they made. The song probably was deemed too high to sing for the other member of the righteous brothers.

Actually this is original sung in 1964 by Bobby of Righteous brother.. Whereas Elvis at his last performance in year 1974, he sung ..but that time performance was not good at all. He tried once as song become so hit..
