    I am a stone cold Jerry Quarry fan. He won my respect and the world's respect. He is one of my all time favorite fighters. He knocked out Earnie Shavers, he knocked out some tough fighters. Jerry was a Warrior with a capital W, you gotta love him. NOTE: Look at the end of his fight with Ali, look how Ali put his arms around Jerry and spent a lengthy time consoling him, Ali knew that this was a true gallant warrior with the heart of a lion. Jerry, don't worry, you will go down in history with some of the all time greats in my book. Rest in peace dear brother. -- Today is now June 19th, 2023, since writing this, I have become a Pastor and a man on a mission to save lost souls, we're here for just a season, then there's eternity. The most important thing in life is where will we spend eternity, Heaven is real, so is hell. There's an 11 hour video of testimonials of people from all over the world, this video has changed my life. The name of the video is,"MANY TESTIMONIES OF HEAVEN AND HELL, HELL IS REAL CHRISTIANS, NO JOKE". I've listened over and over, God don't play, He mean what he says, so many are learning that the hard way, the suffering is off the charts. Watch,pray along when it comes and enjoy eternity with a happiness never imagined, please trust me, if not, you'll think about this message for eternity in a place you want out. Love you all.

      What's more commendable about Gerry Quarry was the fact he was the first reputable heavyweight contender to sign a contract against Muhammad Ali after the unconstitutional 3 year halt the government and the boxing commissions of the various states imposed upon Ali's career. He got a hard time from those who thought Ali still shouldn't be able to practice his profession and as well those critics who claimed he was gambling his own career because a lost to a man who hadn't fought in 3 yrs. would look bad on his resume. Nevertheless Gerry gave him the fight and comported himself well until the fight was stopped on cuts he'd suffered from Ali's blistering jab.
      He may have never been champion, but an entertaining fighter who was quite skilled. In another age he may well have been champion. It was his misfortune to fight when there were a lot of great heavyweights were around.

    Just learning about Jerry Quarry, he was a very underrated fighter. He was a all around boxer, could jab, box smart, but also had a excellent left hook, head movement, and feet movement as well. His uppercuts and right hook were pretty fierce as well. On top of that, he was TOUGH! Strong chin, never gave up, got knocked down, got back up, got injured, still fought and won. He is a veteran boxer worthy of respect and to be studied.

    • @npsParks
      @npsParks 6 лет назад

      Jerry had hurt his back and could not bend in his fight with Jimmy Ellis. I was around both as they trained and was at the fight also. Many thought Jerry won that fight. Fighters of a good caliber never ducked a fight they had signed for because the threat of losing the money paid for the fight. Injured or not...they went through with their signed contracts. In this case, it was dumb and cost him any chance to win a title.

      @5star64 3 года назад

      @Daniel Prescott BS hogwash. When you step into a ring under the bright lights to fight a 200 plus pound man you don't take that lightly. Alexander was an unranked fighter. But still a professional boxer. I know the difference between a knockdown and a knockout. Quarry was saved by the bell . Otherwise he probably gets knocked out. Quarry was a good fighter. But would never have been a champion in any era. Overrated

At 6ft. and 200 lbs., he was almost always the smaller fighter. Except for the fact that he was 200 lbs.of IRISH DYNAMITE!! He could bang with the best in the world! Joe Alexander threw the Left Hook from Hell. I'm amazed Jerry got up (tough as he was). Tremendous knockdown and KO in R2. Well done to both. Clearly Quarry would be too much for the behemoths around today. He unlucky to be around the Incomparable Ali, Joe Frazier and Big George; he'd have been a World Champion but for them.

    Anyone who knows boxing of that era knows Quarry was a fucking warrior. Iron jaw, plenty of power in both hands and excellent hand speed and timing. bilvis48 is right, always fought bigger heavyweights. I think cardio was a bigger issue than the propensity to cut was. His 1st fight against Frazier he looked unbeatable for 3 rounds. Speaking of warriors, Joe was definitely one too.

    Jerry was on tuff Irish kid. He didn't posses all the spit and shine of a Kenny Norton or Cassius Clay, but he could punch like a mule with either hand. If he caught you solid, you were going down and I don't care who you are. Hard hitting Earnie Shavers and many others found this out the hard way. Before the Shavers fight, Ernie thought he was going to steamroll Quarry. Such was not the case as Ernie became the "STEAMROL-EE", not the steamroll-er! RIP Jerry.

    When Foreman talks about purposely ducking Quarry, it might seem like exaggerated praise. After all, against Frazier, Norton and Chuvalo, Foreman won four knockouts while Quarry was knocked out four times by the same opponents. I think what Foreman was suggesting was that the counter punching Jerry who fought intelligently and patiently would have had a real chance at beating any of those guys, and might have frustrated Foreman as well. The problem was, Jerry, in his own words, had the temper of an Irishmen, meaning he was prone to forgetting a fight plan, brawling for a knockout against bigger, stronger, and (in Frazier's case) more durable, natural heavyweights.

    Joe Frazier was ringside at this fight, and must have been sweating about that big money fight six weeks later going up in smoke when Quarry hit the deck. Quarry's decline seemed, according to his biography "Hard Luck ", to have happened between the December, 1973 first round KO of Shavers and here, five months later. Against Earnie, Jerry won an upset, and never looked better. Here and against Frazier six weeks later, Quarry looked softer around the middle than he ever had in his career.

    But what in the world was someone with the potential he had doing in the ring with a top five contender like Quarry after only about ten pro fights?
    Sure he almost pulled off the upset but did his management wreck a good prospect by putting in with too tough of competition too soon?

    Notice how Arthur Mercante knew exactly when to step between the fighters just as the bell ending round one sounded. He was aware of how much time was left in the round and acted accordingly. The Meldrick Taylor vs Julio Cesar Chavez bout was stopped with only two seconds left and Taylor well ahead. I’ve often wondered if a different referee would have allowed the fight to continue and just stepped between the fighters as Mercante did here.

Just over a month later he lost badly to a faded Joe Frazier, putting up nothing like the fight he had against peak Joe in 1969. In this fight he again went down, suggesting he was slowing up and losing his punch resistance.
    In fact, the Alexander fight was the last significant victory of his career. By the time he took the Norton fight, he was an empty shell, taking the fight on 18 days notice.

    Jerry looked out of shape and like he hardly trained for this fight. It almost got him ko'd.

    Jerry was a very good fighter who beat a lot of good fighters and top contenders. However, he always came up short against the great fighters Ali, Frazier, etc.

    Alexander wasn't too bright. He overestimated himself and underestimated Quarry simply because he had knocked him. Apparently he didn't realize Quarry wasn't hurt.

    Joe Alexander was a hard hitting spoiler, if he had better handlers he could have been a ranked fighter. In 1977 there was a great Boxing Tournament ( not that Don King/ABC crap tournament ) Joe Alexander flattened Greg Johnson in the main event, undercard Mike Weaver won on points over Bill Sharkey in a non stop action fight. That Tournament had lots of name fighters in it Matt Franklin, Eddie Gregory, Marvin Johnson & Yaqui Lopez just to name a few. I think Joe would have won the heavyweight tournament. Unfortunately promoters ran out of money, checks started bouncing & the tournament folded & never came to it's conclusion.

    Those last three punches were brutal. But somehow, between the Shavers fight and this one, Quarry lost it. He managed to KO this guy because frankly, Alexander fought a stupid fight. After this, Frazier feasted on Quarry, then Norton did. The Quarry who beat Lyle and Shavers would have destroyed Norton. In this fight----the worst thing to happen to Alexander (aside from getting knocked out) was his one big punch that put Quarry down. After that, he fought like a dunce. He got it in his mind that he could "finish" Quarry and in the process, stopped boxing and started swinging, giving Quarry the chance to counter-punch his way to a KO. Quarry's timing was horrible----he was not ready for this fight. If Alexander would have boxed and fought smart----he might have stolen a decision.

      Jerry broke one of his hands and injured the other punching that hard head of Earnie Shavers. Everyone seems to hold Arthur Mercante in such high regard but IMHO he let the fight go on way to long. Quarry must have hit him with at least 30 unanswered punches. The fight should have been stopped way earlier than it was, and perhaps Quarry might not have injured his both of his hands. It’s really a shame because Quarry had a ton of momentum on his side and had to stop and let his hands heal. And he was never the same again. I blame Mercante.

      @@davidbrandel1311 love the Quarry analysis, I know my Boxing Hagler taught me to box in 76. I was a junior in high school. I won the Gloves in mass in 77.my Dad Donald Oneill was an I.B.F. world title judge retu red in 05, but He did some great title fights 55 in all. Including Virgil Hill, John Ruiz Hollyfield.So many I can't remember and countless non title fights. Google him. Anyway I loved Quarry. Lot of heart. Slow feet though. Would of been a cruiserweight champ if they had the division back then. He was like Patterson small heavyweight. Put Patterson down 4 times in 2 fights by the time he was 22! He was all done basically by the time he was 28.Loved your logic.

    It was a legit knockdown because a punch landed, but go back & watch the slomo @1:25. Quarry wasn't hurt, he immediately threw a counter-left hook AFTER being hit. The momentum of his hook got him off balance & he tried to recover, but his feet slid out from under him. Quarry wasn't hurt, but Alexander thought he was, and then mixed it up with him. Turned out to be a big mistake, as Quarry was the superior fighter & puncher. And Jerry Quarry was a great finisher; if he hurt you, he stopped you!

    • @npsParks
      @npsParks 6 лет назад

      Yes, Jerry was hurt. I saw him much of his early career in person and watched him train. He was almost knocked out a couple of times but recovered to win. He never was hit, by Ali, Fraiser, like he was by lesser men during his career...meaning one punch on the chin, getting caught. His reaction was as it was from the Alexander punch, a good clip on the open chin.
