    Remarkable variety of punches from Norton in this fight, more than usual. Those left hooks and righr uppercuts did so much damage, along with Kenny's usual left jab and chopping or looping right. He really showed how many strings he had to his bow, and how the great era he was in meant he never had the reign as champ that he deserved. Tribute too to Jerry Quarry's courage, wow, the man was so much more than a journeyman, but again, look at the era he was in.

      I always loved watching Kenny Norton fight. Held a mighty bias towards Larry Holmes when he took the title away from Norton. I have to admit...Holmes probably did out point Kenny in that title fight, especially the early rounds, but it was close on the cards and Kenny certainly took the later rounds. It's great fun to be able to watch all these fantastic fighters and their various matches against one another. Thanks to all who post these classic fights.

    This is clearly the golden age of heavyweights, by far. Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes, Norton, Quarry, Shavers, Lyle, some tough tough rough competition. This is 1 of many reasons Ali is the greatest. Ali during this time wasn't even at his very best yet he dominated the heavily loaded dvision.

      Ali was completely beaten by Norton in the 3rd fight. Jimmy Young easily out boxed Ali in their fight. But the judges gave the fights to Ali. And Ali was beaten by a very average fighter, in Leon Spinks. Doesn't make him the greatest, in my book.

Accumulated damage from lack of attention to defense against larger men at the top level, no head guard sparring, and attempted comebacks in 1977, 1983 and 1992 resulted in Quarry developing an unusually severe case of dementia pugilistica. Unable to perform everyday tasks, dependent on his family, and with the fortune he had earned frittered away, Quarry died at 53 years old.

      Quarry was one tough heavyweight. Lost to Ali and Frazier twice but those up and coming heavyweights always made the mistake of taking on Quarry, thinking it was a stepping stone to getting a title shot. Jerry beat in a 8 year span Floyd Patterson, Thad Spencer, Buster Mathis, Mac Foster, Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers. Only Floyd was somewhat past his prime,the others were all top 10 guys on the cusp of title shots. In fact George Foreman admitted he avoided Quarry until he was champ. Likely George would have beaten Jerry but he knew enough to not fight him until it was necessary. I heard Oscar Bonavena also avoided Quarry. That would have been a great fight!

      Great fight. Toe to toe brawling,non stop! Fantastic. Not much defense,all offense. They both caught plenty of leather. But Norton was clearly the stronger fighter. You don't see a lot of fights like this anymore. Golden age of heavy weights. Quarry would have demolished most fighters with that barrage of punches in the second and third round. Norton was hurt, but recovered and came roaring back. Not a fight to be missed. Instant classic.

      Excellent post, Nelson. Styles make fights. Shavers, Cooney and Foreman were sluggers. Even Quarry could hurt you and fought a brawling-type style. Ali fought well against these types because his chin was better than Kenny's. Norton didn't get his chin tested, against Ali, as frequently as the others. Holmes was more in the Ali mold. However, when he fought him, Kenny was about to turn 35 and in his 45th (out of 50) professional fight.

    To me, what is just as sad as how Jerry Quarry’s health betrayed him, is the fact that so few people have seen him at his best. And what’s even more important than WHO he beat, it’s HOW he beat them. There’s a reason why Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, among many others, respected him. The way he deconstructed big men with big punches was like watching a surgeon at the operating table.
    In his prime, the ONLY two men who were Jerry’s true superiors were Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. George Foreman feared no man, but did indeed know that Quarry had the capability of taking him into deeper waters (later rounds). KenNirton purposely waited for Quarry to be washed up, in retirement, and with only two weeks to train to fight him, and even then Jerry went toe to toe. The Jimmy Ellis fight? Quarry went into the fight with a broken back and lost a split decision. The George Chivo fight? Quarry was winning all the way and when he voluntarily took a knee, he misread the referee count. And to all this people who blamed his health on fighting, his mother and sister died from dimentia too. Hint: They weren’t boxers.

    No, YOU look again. Norton dodges Quarry's right at 18:39, returns with a left, and then they both throw (missed) rights at the same time that wrap around each other and lurch Norton forward. The ref jumps in to prevent a slip and reset it from there (and gives Quarry a free shot in the process).

    That was a great fight. Though Jerry Quarry was only 30 years old, he was an "Old 30" by Boxing standards. Prior to fighting Norton, Jerry had already been in the ring with Ali and Frazier (Twice with both) and took a beating all 4 times. In my opinion, Jerry's best fight was his First Round KO of Earnie Shavers. Both Norton & Quarry were all time greats. Both men fought the best of the best in the Heavyweight Division. People forget that Jerry Quarry was basically a lightheavy weight who spent a career fighting some of the greatest true heavyweights in the history of the sport with a conservative boxing style. Quarry didn't quite connect with his biggest punches or the fight could have had a different result. It was a great fight, very competitive for awhile, although Quarry's defense abandoned him and Norton just killed him as the fight progressed. The cut around Quarry's eye impeded his vision and probably had something to do with Quarry's poor defense.. Still, Quarry wanted to continue as the fight was called off, probably wisely.

      +polymath7 Norton was pushing 36 when that happened, a year and two matches after enduring the fight of both his and Larry Holmes' life. Should we also take into account how Quarry in his late 30s could barely beat 23-25-2 James Williams? How he lost to 3-4-1 Ron Cranmer next? How he lost to an aged, won-1-of-his-last-6-fights Eddie Machen? How he got knocked out by George Chuvalo, during his prime? I'm guessing not.

    • @polymath7
      @polymath7 8 лет назад +2

      itstheblueguy Quarry was already experiencing dementia pugilistica by his late thirties. Shavers was only two years younger than Norton, but I guess that could mean a lot if you actually think Norton deteriorated precipitouslyin the year since his fight with Holmes. (Who, by the way, handed Norton his ass in one of the most falsely reported fights of the seventies. Like Ali-Foreman, that wasn't even close to close.)

    • @thatguyoverthere11
      @thatguyoverthere11 8 лет назад +4

      +polymath7 Not that he was at his PEAK against Homes, but... yeah, it's really not debatable. In his fight right after Shavers, and then the one after that, Norton had trouble overpowering Scott LeDoux and Tex Cobb, who weren't in the same league as anyone being discussed here. When you're an active boxer, your 30s are Russian roulette. As each number goes by, you're more likely to be shot. The list of fighters who didn't have it anymore at 34, while long, is a lot shorter than 36. (Not to mention that Shavers, the ultimate glass cannon, is already a poor point of comparison, even without the age factor. Either he knocked you out first or you knocked him out first - or he just didn't show up. There were virtually no exceptions not named Muhammad Ali. Should we debate whether Ron Stander and 32-31 Bob Stallings were better than Norton too, while we're at it?)
      Also, Norton's fight with Holmes not even close? Says you and nobody else in history, including Larry Holmes. There's still discussion today on whether Norton was the actual winner of that one.

I mentioned the Quarry fight but he swore he was not hurt in the 3rd round, just wanted to let Quarry punch himself out. Said Quarry stung him a few times but he was not in any real trouble. Probably he was telling the truth. Quarry by that time in his career was pretty much spent and besides, he only had about 3 weeks to train for this fight. Big mistake, Norton was a very good fighter, Quarry never should have taken the fight unless he had the usual 2-3 months to train for it.

  • @MrMarco855
    @MrMarco855 9 лет назад +9

    The referee screwed up in the last round,.......did anyone catch it? At 18:40 in the video, the ref came around Norton and pulled him away from Quarry. The referee started to wave his hands over his head like they do when stopping the fight. The only problem is just a split second before that, Quarry hit Norton right on the chin with a right hand that buckled Nortons' legs. The referee noticed that and quickly changed his mind about stopping it. If the referee hadn't pulled them apart right at that moment, Quarry may have knocked Norton down.
    I know Norton was dominating in general but take a look at that sequence starting about 18:30. Norton hit Quarry with 3 punches but Quarry was shrugging them off pretty well. Quarry then hit Norton with a short right and then another right, the 2nd was harder and you will see Norton's legs buckle and the referee stepped in right then. If the ref didn't stop the action, one or two more punches and Norton may have gone down. Keep watching after that, Norton was short-arming his punches and missing badly. Norton was very tired, that's why I think he may have gone down.

      MrMarco855 I largely agree. I saw Norton buckle. I remember watching this one. who knows what would have happened if Norton had went down. Perhaps when he got up he would have been facing a rejuvenated Quarry. Quarry was a really good fighter with a lot of guts. He just couldn't beat Ali and Frazier. In some other eras, he could have been a champion.

    • @MrMarco855
      @MrMarco855 9 лет назад +1

      slybear525 Norton might have gone down on that punch because, if you look very closely, the referee actually 'caught' Norton. That is, Norton buckled and quickly began to go down. The referee was in the exact spot that Norton was falling into. He almost had no choice except to 'catch' Norton, and he did support Norton's weight, even if for only a split second. Who knows if Norton would have gone down if not for the little helping hand.
      that's one issue, the 2nd issue is that he disrupted Quarry's momentum. At this stage in the fight, Quarry was pretty much giving it his last shot. He was tired and somewhat hurt, and any interference that stops the body and punching momentum and rhythm could be enough to end Quarry's chance. If Quarry could have stayed right with it, his timing and momentum going forward indicate another punch or two could have landed and possibly put Norton down hard. We'll never know.
      Did you see quarry's reaction? He didn't throw a big fit, but he made a quick gesture motioning to the ref to get the hell out of his business, and I think Quarry may have barked a word or two at him.
      The 3rd issue is, after all that took place, Norton got more alert and hit quarry with 2 or 3 good punches. They weren't enough to stop the fight, especially considering that the referee knew that quarry 'almost' knocked Norton down a few seconds earlier. The referee denied quarry that one more chance that he deserved, and I think the referee owed it to him because of what transpired just prior to the stoppage.
      There's something they couldn't take from Quarry,......... his courage and heart. This man took big punches from the very best, and he stood up no matter how hurt he was. That's something that's not a given, it takes something deep inside to accept that punishment without quitting or even complaining. The appropriate phrase is that quarry 'took it like a man'.........

    • @slybear525
      @slybear525 9 лет назад +2

      MrMarco855 I agree. Quarry was not a quiter. He had very good boxing skills. He had a very good left hook that had kayo power. He took a good punch. And he was certainly very brave. The downside was that he took a lot of punches. After being battered, he came back with these great punches that could have dropped Norton had he not been caught by the ref. Another thing I noticed is that the ref stopped the action when Norton was hit. Although I agree-- the ref could have let it go a bit longer, I am glad he stopped it because I feel that although was a tough guy, I felt that the shots he was taking could have killed him in the ring. But yes, I agree with what you have said here.

    Fascinating moment in boxing history as this fight was for the King of the Also Rans of 70's Heavies not Great[Foreman,Frazier,Ali]but just below that level and Kenny seized that title.The moment I'm referring to was around 2:20 mark just prior to stoppage Quarry makes his last stand and rips Norton with a vicious left hook/right combo that renders Norton prone,vulnerable..LoBianco incredulously jumps in for no apparent reason separates fighters..Norton strides back and recovers as he was always a specimen in top-flight condition. Clears his head and the rest is history as Quarry is done!Dunphy didn't see it nor have I ever heard it mentioned. Curious if anyone else ever noticed this?

    Size doesn't matters. They would have dominate heavyweight division with easy nowadays and there is no doubts about it.
