I can only assume that those making all the "Boring Performance" comments are not really Electronic Music fans but EDM fans.... Boom Tss Boom Tss Boom Tss Boom Tss Boom Tss Boom Tss.... A wonderful sonic journey by an Electronic Music Pioneer performed on an incredible synth made by one of the greatest synth legends in history... Don Buchla. If you really wanna hear a boring performance take all those patch cables out and stand each of those "Boring" commenters in front of the Buchla.... I guarantee that would be a pretty damn boring performance.
The gatekeeping here is hilarious. Its a good soundscape, its not bad, but just the hate here and elitism gave me a giggle. Creative, beautiful organic sounds of electronic music extracted from "cold" machines. And still do it in live performance! Something that the VST generation does not appreciate enough. Bravo Suzanne!
First time i listened to this with my eyes shut, my head started nodding by itself. It felt like the drastic panning back and forth hypnotised me or something. It stopped whenever I moved or opened my eyes. Does anyone have similar experiences? it was an awesome experience!
Awesome experience.. love the synths knobs blinking lights and soundscapes altogether.. beautifully sequenced and performed... quite enlightening.. thanks for posting!
This setup literally looks like an inside out of a computer on the table. I love love the panning. I use to listen to a cassette tape in the late 90s that had these kinds of sounds.. kept flipping the cassette in my walkman all night long. Then I lost the tape GRRR!
First album: 1982. Respect. I didn't know her before this vid so thx for that. For the guys who just said that is boring -did you watch and listen all the video? IF it was Jean-Michel Jarre no one even dare to think or say it's boring, everyone would said he's a genius... And yes, Jarre also made those "boring" type of sound during performances.
Nothing very clever or interesting about this performance. I guess if you also spend most of your time playing with modular gear it may have some interest, but musically it is just ambient noodling of a quite ordinary type, heard a thousand times before... tangerine dream anyone? ;)

I have to admit ive had a crush on Suzanne since 321 contact .... she's a perfect 10 to me... synth skills and incredible beauty ,.... when she plays synths me ole knees buckle ... lol... ❤️😉
Took me 9 minutes to figure out it was a stereo recording. Had one Earbud and it sounded off (panning/quiet in parts). Sounds way better with full effect.
Why do we only hear two of the four channels? If this was performed live on a quad system, why didn't anyone at Ableton think to mix this down into stereo for online?
Pretty funny Suzanne performing at a Loop festival since playing the Buchla is pretty much the exact opposite of working with loops (which Stockhausen already said was old fashioned like 30 years ago).
could someone explain how the quad setup works? seems those four boxes on the end of the table are the 4 outs but how do you get 4 splits from a monosynth?
it can work in many ways but the simplest explanation of Quad is you have 4 mono outs and ins that you can send whatever you want to each one (so with a monosynth you simpley select which one to go in each corner or have a mix of all four, just two etc etc). Therefore you must have minimum 4 speakers in the room. I have a Quadrophonic DJ mixer. Many records were recorded in Quad but they mostly stopped in the 70's.
A clone of a Buchla - there's a doco from a day later where she talks about that. The buchla is too expensive to risk to airplane baggage handllers and the generall rigours of the road.

Quadraphonic sound. There was a time when it was pretty popular and some people consider stereophonic a regression. It's a bit of a precursor to surround sound in a way.

what do you mean we have modular in digital too, and there are hybrid setups controlled by CV.
I met her tonight. Never have i been more inspired!

There is no problem to hear the full quad channel audio from this video when using a PLII Music decoder and at least 4 speakers connected
Awesome experience.. love the synths knobs blinking lights and soundscapes altogether.. beautifully sequenced and performed... quite enlightening.. thanks for posting!
I really appreciate that our planet has a woman like this on it, ty suzanne
A true master of her craft and one of the pioneers of synth! Buchla invented West Coast synthesis and gave it to Suzanne to play with and create.
This setup literally looks like an inside out of a computer on the table. I love love the panning. I use to listen to a cassette tape in the late 90s that had these kinds of sounds.. kept flipping the cassette in my walkman all night long. Then I lost the tape GRRR!
Wonderful performance as always from Ms. Ciani!
experimental and very musical!!!! where and anything goes!!! the effort was amazing!!!
This woman was 70+ years old when she performed this. Let that sink in.
So what? That's pretty patronising.
What on Earth does the sink want now?
Time doesn't matter. Only life is important. She is the 5th element.
yeah too much time spent on those simple sequences.
Wow! She's an incredible inspiration.
Gets really intense around 8mins, love her new album with KAS
Absolutely Astonishing! Love this stuff

great stuff.
Mesmerizing!
My respects to the creativity of Suzanne Ciani. Yes most of that Is in your mind. The rest comes in the synthesizers
i like it much!

Respect Auntie!

Amazing.

Amazing sounds an so charming lady!
will you marry her?

Amazing! Techmoan's awesome video brought me here! I hope to be one of the lucky 272!?
Likewise today
East coast meets West coast - Buchla main synth & Animoog on one of the iPads
calibrating her compass at 0:58
Shes so cool
only just come across this having been respectful of Main/Robert Hampson's 'originality'. Mind blowing
WOW!

Sort of funny but not really, what is a "loop"? That's the question you should ask yourself :) (Stockhausen would understand my meaning hehe)
Nice experimental performance of Suzanne Ciani. Love the different timber of the Buchla :)
Not for you if you find this boring. And thats completely OK. Modular can seem like wizardry (witchcraft in this case lol) sometimes.
¡Diosa!
Simply amazing.

Make the signal stereo before it hits the boxes. Usually thru fx

It’s an authentic Buchla 200e System with a couple of clone modules (248r MARF, 291 Dual Bandpass Filter) of vintage modules no longer made by Buchla.

OMS!!!
Nice direct boxes.
Where is the computer? Is she running Ableton on iPads?
I think the iPad is running some sort of remote app for the Eventide FX boxes?
more fun than a Prophet 5.
Sounds good to me. Reminiscent of Terry Riley in some spots.
I feel bad for discovering this artist only today, even though I know Kraftwerk, Vangelis, Jarre, Moroder among other precursors.

I like it a lot, but listening with headphones, the total absence of signal caused by "stereo ping-pong" is really bothering, acoustically

Agreed. It's doing things to my brain. Reducing the volume only partially helps! It's worth it, though, to hear such beautiful music.
