Great interview Tommy, very thorough with the questions.
This is not the truck I want though. I want Full electric. I don't like fueling next to people. In fact you can say I hate people
William Gregory : You hate people. There I said it.
@Dirty Harry Tesla cars drive themselves. I assume the awesome Tesla Truck about to be revealed in 11 days from now also will 😁
@Dirty Harry Yup, I even hate myself. So I would Glue and tape a ball in the steering wheel and let the car drive itself. Then pay a family member to program it to sent it back to me😁
Looks like a Toyota Hillix engine to me
Toyota give me the Diesel with a Manual transmission, quad cab, LONG BED please and thank you.

Where can I trade mines in? 😁
Basically that's a Toyota Hilux, without a long bed
YES. It’s what we all want
Brian Mariki still, it’s for sale but not here in the states which is a shame
I really think Toyota needs a diesel version of the Tacoma and Tundra
And in the Rav4
At LEAST the Tundra
It's called a Hilux :)
they need to make a one tundra with a big diesel
Just buy a Toyota from Australia.
He got it correct that in the U.S. diesel never caught on except for full size pick-ups. Check out car brands in other countries and you will find that just about every vehicle offers one or two diesel alternatives to the petrol engine.
Alot of resistance to diesels in anything but trucks comes from when GM had there 350 diesels in oldsmobile in the 70s and 80s.
@@animal16365 I've never understood why that's the case.
Dude spent 32k on a conversion?! I get it, it's neat, but yikes.
Bwaaaaahahahahaha...
Spend $32k to save a few mpg. What a fool, but it's his money.
You can get 12,7 series 60 for less ... And is not street legal.
Shawn Levin : I agree not the discussion I would make either. - but I think mileage range was more important to I’m than mileage savings.
So what did he do with the original engine?? Did he give it to diesel toys???
I was thinking the same thing.
$32k can purchase a lot of gasoline plus a larger fuel tank.
That swap will never pay for itself in fuel economy. My F150 with the 36 gallon tank has a 600 mile range, but my bladder only has a 250 range!
Yeah he probably spent $30,000 to save 3 miles per gallon. So his "fuel mileage" argument went out the window.
I agree the best option my Toyota Tundra has is a 38 Gallon fuel tank.
Love your content lately guys! It’s awesome. It’s crazy to think a motor that I drive in a car every single day here in Australia is new and exciting to you guys!
I give the guy a thumbs up for a cool ride, and I'm glad we live in a place where you can do what you want with your money. But don't pretend it makes sense financially.
Yup! To each his own. I'd love to have a diesel FJ (and/or the $$ to have it converted)
How many miles would he need to drive to recoup the outlay?
@@Riaan3108 All of them.

3.0L 1KD-FTV is the best diesel engine!
Very durable, strong and has great potential.
Even my friend's Hilux, which uses the smaller 2.5L 2KD-FTV unit with 142 hp/340 nm, can increase its power to 270 hp/600 nm by simply remapping the ECU.
Remapping only adds 30-50hp depending on your preference if it's for daily or racing. My Hiace 1KD has 105whp stock and got 137whp with remap only.
I can picture a Toyota maintenance tech getting in and starting it... "what the f$#?" 😂
Oh no not rod knock on a low mileage truck
yeah seriously, from my experience they would have told you that you need a new engine and never even opened the damn hood. "sir we plugged in our computer and your truck is only running on 4 cylinders, we went ahead and sent it to a junk yard for you"
"Replaced with new spark plugs" listed on the service bill.
Maintenance is the vital thing you need to consider when doing engine conversions. Since most parts aren't locally available, you have to order it overseas and that's just time consuming and expensive.
Great job TFL and thanks for bringing this. Very cool.
Now this was worth my time!! Nicely done guys..
Thanks for taking time to shoot the truck guys! Video turned out great!
@@speterbilt my thoughts exactly, or even buy an existing diesel half ton, or a Colorado. Pretty much the same mpg with a hell of a lot more power.
@@speterbilt You know, its not JUST about fuel economy; fuel economy is just one benefit of the conversion. +500,000 mile engine life, multi-fuel capabilities, dramatically better towing performance, lower maintenance costs, just to name a few. This is a "conversion" so the cost of entry is ALWAYS going to be higher than buying something off the manufacturer's dealer lot. Why do people do V8 Hemi swaps at $40k+ a pop? Is there not a cheaper vehicle to drive than a Ferrari? Of course there is. People build what they want and it doesnt mean that one is right and the other wrong. People regularly bring vehicles to our shop with $20k in mods. Does that mean lift kits and tires and wheels, gears, bumpers etc are cost effective? We get that its expensive. We get that its not for everybody. If its not your brand of vodka, nobody is forcing anything on anyone. But, keep it in perspective compared to other professional conversions out there. At least ours has a long list of benefits other than raw power.
@@speterbilt people pay roughly $50,000 for a hemi swap in their $50,000 Jeeps...
@@dieseltoys How do you calculate the new towing limits? I imagine payload is also affected, ,how much ? How about the effect of extra torque on the axles and transfer case, have you taken that into account?
@@marklion315 The towing limits are more dictated by the weight and braking performance of the vehicle than power. The weight disparity between the diesel and the gas engine is about 150 lbs. We have no reported issues in any of the Tacomas we've done. If we got one with an issue breaking the axles etc. we would certainly investigate as to the cause.

Drives me nuts that these exist all over the place outside of North America, but we can't get them factory new here. Nor can we import one due to the importation laws here in the US.
I agree. I like a truck that's comfortable and safe, but is also rugged and utilitarian. I think it's stupid what our govt. does. I'd like to breathe clean (unpolluted) air as much as anyone living, but I've never liked our government deciding for us how clean our air should be.

I have been saying this for years now ! give us a diesel option that you can order but you have to wait for it to be built. I think a diesel TRD 4Runner would be amazing! It's only a matter of time before they have to join the diesel game everyone Else is and are pushing out products .
I'm definitely going to look into making the swap on my 2013 Tacoma. I always wanted a Diesel Tacoma. A little bit expensive , I wish we can get this factory Diesel Tacoma.
That's a nice setup !! Really like the truck.
The EPA would shred that thing. Once you add DEF, DPF and detune for emissions it would end up costing an additional $8K or more over the 3.5 and it would end up being a real dog. Too bad that manufacturers can’t bring us what we want due to government interference.
John Huff I’m with you, the EPA is a joke. Australia isn’t burning to the ground and have them yet here in the states they act like diesel is the worse thing in the world forcing the entire country to either drive little civics or get 18mpg’s at best in a gas job. Isn’t it great?
John Huff y’all voted for it. Lie in the bed you made.
Zakary Savinski I never voted for this sort of over regulation. Having said that you are correct in that elections do have consequences. It doesn’t affect me personally as I have no real desire to have a diesel powered vehicle for my needs but I wish there were options for those that want them.
@@greenhenderson7165 They just don't want high mpg diesels because they wouldnt make any money from the fuel tax
leadnsteel it’s such a scam man... big rip to the US market man

Very cool!
The truck I truly want is the HILUX, not as expensive as the Tacoma, new Hilux runs about 23k in Mexico. In addition, they tow more than a Tacoma, they get much better fuel milage like 40mpg, and they are made of steel unlike the cheap composite bed on the Tacoma. One more thing, they are already diesel.
The composite bed really was/is the best part of the newer tacoma. My 2001 rusted and cracked in half, i bought a 2015 and got rid of it last year after the frame started to show the same cancer issues.. the only thing to stay rust free and remain original, that composite bed.. wish my 01 had it..
ShartingFish True but what that truly says is the poor quality of the steel and cheap paint they use to protect the metal. For instance, there’s trucks from the 1970s that still have there Original bed but back then quality craftsmanship was over mass producing trucks that truly are not meant to last over 10 years. For instance, I own a Tundra that has a steel bed and have never had rust problems with it or any of the ones I’ve owned. Why is that, Toyota doesn’t completely own the market on their full size trucks like they do on their mid size trucks so they can’t just slap on a reliable power train on a plastic porcelain body. I like Toyota, but the quality of their vehicles is very poor here in the US compared to what they build in other countries.
Felix Rodriguez I don't really have the industry knowledge to judge that, nor the climate details, i just assume that places that they use salt on the roads like here where i am in the rust belt that regardless they crack in half.. here things don't really survive no matter what they are after 10 years.. that's about the limit on body integrity no matter who makes it. I am curious how the aluminum body f150 will fair, but tundra, tacoma, ram, sierra, silverado they all rust to pieces here in time.. though dodge is probably the worst as most after 10 years you can use as mulch.
I’m with u on the Diesel/Hybrid 100 MPG
Imagine repair costs on diesel and hybrid. Diesels, this engine included, has DPF issues. Just research the court cases in Australia.
The start-stop system is terrible for DPF, as it requires relatively high temps.
So it works great in someone's head with only limited amount of factors being included in that imaginary scenario ;)
To bad Toyota doesn't offer that diesel engine in the U.S. The government wants vehicles with better mileage and with DEF fluid providing a far cleaner emissions. Thanks for sharing Tommy that was a great review of diesel in the Tacoma.

No ticks in the bullet proof 3.4
@@nathankoroush7918 sure there is. EFI ticks.
The 3.5 ticks because of the direct injection, you can quiet it down by throwing a lot of insulation in the engine compartment (there is already some on the valve covers), but since it's a truck Toyota didn't care if it sounds like a quietish diesel at idle.
I love My 2016 2.8 Colorado no complaints 32mpg on the highway
Back in the early 2000s, I was in Kosovo driving around Toyota 4Runners with 4 cylinder turbo diesel engines.
Those four runners ran great power but was one issue in the weather cold Winters that occur over there. The fuel filter and that particular setup what's located under the hood on the driver side. If you did not let the engine warm up for at least 30 minutes, the diesel would literally freeze inside the filter and the engine would run rough and sputter for a long time. If you were in a big hurry and could not wait 30 minutes for it to warm up, you would have to get a bucket of hot water and pour it over the filter to unfreeze the diesel fuel.
Other than that I love the 4Runner with a diesel engine.
Those problem already solved in new diesel engines.
Love it, always wanted to do it to my 2nd BUT unless u have a lot of money to play with.....it's not worth it.
I've driven diesel trucks overseas. I can totally see why he did it. In fact, I'd probably do the same but can't being I have to smog my vehicles in the city of Albuquerque. The rest of the world gets it. The only way to achieve the torque and MPG's for a truck is with a diesel. Toyota does what it can with the 3.5 six but its a horrible compromised torqued starved POS. This is the way it was meant to be. They already got these with DEF overseas. Its not that hard for Toyota if they wanted to bring it in. Just to much demand for the current taco so they don't care. People buy crap they will gladly make it lol.
