Loved all the scenes of English towns and the countryside, including the tiny B-roads! I'm sure you're all experts on UK castles after this trip. I chuckled at Derek's comment about 'see a toilet, use a toilet', this is always my first piece of travel advice I give to novice travellers, Public toilets become very important!
Hahaha it's SUCH IMPORTANT ADVICE! We were about to drive an hour back to Portsmouth in the rain, so it was an important precaution! Glad you appreciated it. 😆
I never understand this.. it must be a cultural thing?! We just pop into pubs, cafes, coffee shops etc. There are public toilets in bigger cities or in smaller towns you can find them at train and bus stations or petrol garages etc
@@AM-dz2sh I don't think it's cultural just practical. I live in Australia and there are public toilets everywhere, you don't need to pop into pubs etc. Last summer I was in Europe and when visiting a small beach town I went in search of public toilets and even asked at the tourist bureau and got told there were no public toilets in the whole town. And this was a town catering to tourists! Your only option was to go to a cafe and buy a coffee and then use their toilets, you couldn't use the toilets in bars, cafes or restaurants unless you were a customer. So I always tell people when they travel (especially Europe and I include the UK here, since I've been caught there too!) see a toilet, use it!
My wife grew up in Portchester and used to play in the castle. We live just north of Portsmouth. I recognised your drive to Winchester, from the top of the hill to Southwick onto Wickham, Droxford and the Morestead road.
So lovely! Packed lunch not only saves money but also time as you don't have to wait to be served or in a queue. I pack my lunch in my bag that I use from the bakery so it smells nice.
I have enjoyed watching your travel vlogs from your UK trip. I was born and grew up on the Isle of Wight but have lived in Portsmouth for the past 24 years. We often drive the back roads between Portsmouth and Winchester and know some can be tricky especially if you get stuck behind or meet a tractor coming in the opposite direction!
Haha yes! The back roads can be beautiful, but I agree - it's tough if you get stuck behind a slow moving vehicle! So glad you're enjoying our UK travel vlogs - more to come shortly!!
I grew up in Winchester, it’s interesting to see it being viewed from an outsiders perspective. There are loads of really beautiful streets and hidden gems all over. Fun fact: Winchester has the highest density of pubs per square mile in the UK!
Well done Derek on your driving skills your a natural mucka . Most tourists don't know why the shops close " early " , the reason is if the foot fall isn't big enough it's too expensive to stay open and also the main point is so the staff can go home to their family and rest , but on the good side it's generally the café , restaurants and thank god pubs that are open lol
Makes sense about the foot traffic point! I think there's a cultural difference in certain ways as an American tourist, because since places are open later here in the US, people tend to go run errands a lot after work. And yes, Derek did some great driving during the whole trip, and we ended up recording a yet-to-be-released driving guide for Americans in the UK! 😀
@@MeansToTravel yes , there has been a fair few tourists saying it's nice to go on motorways / freeways and see the fields instead of signboards every 30ft , plus there is no pressure to always buy the latest fashion or household equipment. Look forward to seeing Derek doing handbrake turns on the country roads lol
So did you get used to the narrow lanes at some point? The ones you showed at the beginning were not that bad... at least you could see! They can get really narrow and winding with tall hedgerows on both sides and NO visibility 😱
The road they were driving down (from Portchester to Southwick) is actually a UK driving test route (the test centre is on Portsdown Hill), it's definitely something people from the nearby city have to practice.
Winchester has a university, but it also has Winchester College, which is one of the top public (meaning not state funded) schools right up there with Eton and Harrow. My husband and his older brother were both scholars there, and our current prime minister Rishi Sunak is also an Old Boy. The term College in British usage is not the same as university.
Nice! Yes, I actually had to go on a tour of Eton college when I studied abroad in London while I was “at university.” 😀 It’s funny how the word college is colloquially very different for Brits and Americans!
It`s a pity that when you left Porchester and went up the hill, if you had turned left at the top, you would have come to the original Nelson Monument. The monument was built in 1807 - 1808, funded by donations of two days pay from all who served at the Battle of Trafalgar and from Royal Navy prize money. Just past there is Fort Nelson, which is now taken up by The Royal Armories, as a museum, well worth a look. As it was you went through Southwick, at the bottom of that scary lane, where you would have found Southwick House, the headquarters for the Allied troops for D-Day.
Just trying to spot myself in the castle because I live in Portchester. Plus if you like ghosts the castle is haunted. The most well-known ghost we locals know is the ghost of the women Charlotte Wight how jump of the castle keep. So the next time your in Portchester Castle look out for Charlotte Wight best time to see her is at night.
THE CASTLE IS HAUNTED?! EEEEK! They never told us that in the audio tour! Haha thanks for this great comment, and hope you enjoy the next vlog that I'm going to put out this weekend where we do another day exploring Portsmouth!
This was filmed on October 7th, so Winchester was just in tier 1 at the time and we were still almost a month away from lockdown #2. Good thought, though! But at the time, every place was open their regular hours.
Brilliant video (as always). I’m surprised you weren’t both humming and singing this classic hit - whilst in Winchester? ruclips.net/video/geaWf4qLON8/видео.html
I love seeing Americans getting hyped over British things that we take for granted haha! Great video, just subbed!
Haha thanks for the sub - you'll see us get hyped about British things in loads of blogs to come!!
As always guys, great video. You captured the essence of Hampshire. We loved it too. All the best guys.❤❤ Harriet, Jim and Yuki
Great vlog! I loved seeing Portchester Castle and Winchester!
Thanks so much Mary Ellen!! 🙏🏻🧡
Absolutely gorgeous! I love travel vlogs! I really miss traveling; can’t wait to leave my house again! LOL! Keep these videos coming! I’m following!

Please, make a lot of video ))) I have loved your channel and I believe that this channel's rating will be increased )
Thanks so much!!
When I was a wee lad in the early 60s, there was a pop song on the radio called "Winchester Cathedral" that had a bit of a Rudy Vallee vibe to it.
I'll have to track that song down! Still sad that we didn't get to go inside, but there's always next time. :)
So did you get used to the narrow lanes at some point? The ones you showed at the beginning were not that bad... at least you could see! They can get really narrow and winding with tall hedgerows on both sides and NO visibility 😱
Haha yes eventually I got used to the narrow lanes! Once we went to Cornwall, we saw the hedgerows on both sides! Thanks so much for watching!!

@@davedavids57 haha that's a fun fact!!👍
Only the Keep at Portchester and the immediate area around it are Norman, the enormous outer walls are Roman .

Hampshire is a county, like you mentioned in your example of Essex
