Norwich
Winchester is a fabulous place.
Ely Cathedral. Love your enthusiasm.👍
A 'Boozer' is a slang term for a pub, where we drink booze.
I want you to find Camelot👍
Salisbury. The cathedral houses the oldest operating clock in the UK, is home to one of the 4 original copies of the Magna Carta, and has the highest spire in the UK.
William Golding (Lord of the Flies) was my dad's English teacher at the Bishop Wordsworth school, and I like to think dad and his chums were the inspiration for the novel....😅..
We do need to visit, Salisbury! That's so cool that Golding was your father's teacher!
I was born in Tisbury, and Salisbury is one of my favourite places. Shame Stonehenge is so expensive to visit.
its the best spire, people come from all over the world to see the spire
@@mandyb4140 I was born in Salisbury!
That’s so cool!! I read Lord of the Flies recently as I was not required to read it in school, great book!!
What a Beautiful city!!😊🏴🇬🇧
I was born in Winchester and grew up not far away. Glad you enjoyed the city, it’s pretty lovely.
That river is The Itchen and you can walk alongside it (The Itchen Navigation Canal) all the way down to Southampton - a beautiful 10 mile stroll. Southampton is where I live and it boasts some pretty good Norman city walls, an amazing Tudor House and Tudor gardens open to the public and a Titanic museum (this was the port of departure for the Titanic) and really great art gallery both in the Civic Centre. Chill out in the extensive, beautiful parks or shop and dine in the large West Quay Mall. You can hop on a car ferry from here to take a trip across The Solent to The Isle of Wight which is full of amazing history and interesting places to visit.
Apparently, "The Black Boy" was one of Charles II's nicknames, so there are no unpleasant connotations :) (I didn't know this, I Googled it! :D) Also, if you're interested in Roman stuff, Pevensey Castle on the Sussex Coast was built in the ruins of an old Roman fort, Anderitum. Whilst the fort is long since decayed, and the castle itself is a touch worse-for-wear, the Roman walls surrounding the castle are still very much in tact! Though, I doubt a visit to the castle would take more than an hour.
One of my favourite pubs
Side note - they used to have a lovely Mango Cider on tap there
Chichester is a beautiful Roman city, with a lot of the wall still standing, and a fantastic cathedral. There is a Roman palace nearby at Fishbourne.
You should also go to Portsmouth and visit the Historic Dockyard, the D Day Museum, Portchester castle and great views from the Spinnaker Tower.
As a Pompey boy born and raised I wholeheartedly agree with the Dockyard, D Day Musuem and Portchester Castle. Chichester is great and nearby there you also have Fishbourne Roman Palace which is really interesting if you are a history nut and don't know much about the Romans.
Winchester is an historic city often overlooked by overseas visitors. I knew little about it until my youngest son attended school there for six years, during which I managed to get there twice or thrice each year and grew to love the place. Few know that at least ten monarchs have their caskets in this cathedral. My favourite cathedral cities, other than those commonly on the tourist beat, are: Hereford, Ely, and Truro.😅
I've just come back from a visit to Chichester, very cool place, ancient Cathedral and other interesting buildings. Nearby Arundel has a spectacular castle.
Just so lovely to get a tourists enthusiasm. We are local so kinda standard, although always appreciate the beauty and history.
Winchester is my hometown! This was such a lovely video to watch - it felt like I was walking around the city with all three of you! There's something really special about seeing a place you love through the eyes of others - it was such a joy to see you enjoying what the city has to offer :) p.s. so awesome to see the support for the the local businesses of Winch - Flat Whites and The Black Boy are highlights of the city! Xxx
And the Wykeham Arms!
Another fantastic video! You guys are doing a great job promoting spots in the UK, well done ! Love it!
Thank you, Stephen!
The cathedral has a few other things worth mentioning. In particular the story of the diver who worked for years placing bags of cement in the total dark in the flooded foundations. In the chancel are the caskets containing the bones of the Saxon kings including Canute.
And the Winchester Bible, an absolute masterpiece of calligraphy.
Try visiting Arundel in West Sussex, great castle and a couple of very dog friendly pubs( food served all day) the Swan in the town square, and The Black Rabbit right along side the river Arun, goods amazing there's Arundel Park and Swanbourne lake, and a wildfowl sanctuary. Nice beaches nearby too.
I'm from Winchester, love ❤️ this! Subscribed, Thanks guys.. I need to explore it more, I've been here 39 years 😂
I’m from Dorset and so glad you are coming here. I often go for walks in the Purbecks/ Jurassic Coast. You will love it, the views are out of this world
It is really beautiful there!
Me to, had friends visiting for the weekend and took them down to SoBo beach bar yesterday. They were suitably impressed.
I live in Nottinghamshire UK and just googled where Winchester is after watching your beautiful filming of this place - you really are showing us sone beautiful places here for us brits in the UK ❤
I live in a town about 15 minutes away from Winchester and seeing people look around what I see as normal is really strange. The town I live in is called alresford and is definitely worth a visit. The more you look around the more cool stuff you find!
Winchester was not on my travel list before this vlog, but now it is!
The statue of the man standing in the water in the crypt under Winchester cathedral is by Anthony Gormley. Another of his statues and probably the best known one is the Angel of the North.
The house where Jane Austen died is just a couple of hundred yards from the Cathedral. It is not open to the public but there is a plaque on the wall. Also worth seeing are the various Military Museums at Peninsular Barracks which is just up the hill behind the Great Hall. There is also a fantastic large garden behind the Museums, on what used to be the parade ground, with a fountain.....ideal for eating your lunch on a sunny day!
If you are down South again Guildford High Street is a classic and near the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
what a truly lovely couple these two are and good channel too
Thank you!
I love Winchester, visit a couple of times a year….even if it is just for a stroll in the sun and a beer
I go to Sparsholt uni just 3 miles from here and it's funny seeing a tourist video on it, you take for granted how much history there is
Winchester looks like a beautiful city/town/village! Love how it’s history is still be utilized in present times.
Having lived in Kent most of my life, and never having visited Winchester, I can't get over how similar it is to Canterbury!
This is one of my favorite towns you have visited !❤
The Isle of Purbeck is the most beautiful part of Dorset IMHO. The pubs at Worth Matravers (Square and Compass) and Langton Matravers (Kings Arms) are great. Beautiful heathland on the IOP, Corfe Castle is stunning as are the views from St Aldhelm's Chapel and beach at Shell Bay.
You should go to Portsmouth. It is famously an island city. Interestingly there was no island there once. The huge thriving beautiful metropolis of Southampton, 17 miles east of Portsmouth actually needed somewhere to dump it's sewage and used a huge barge to float it along the Solent, eventually, after hundreds of years, creating an island. The city is nicknamed Pompey which is a corruption of "Poop and Pee" which amazingly the locals are very proud of. I would advise a little some sort of vapor rub under the nose if you go at low tide.
There's people from all over the World viewing these comments. Stop being a dick.
I don’t think that I’ve ever read a sentence that contains the words beautiful and Southampton in it.
Visited Winchester and cathedral in about 1985 great place
Cara, you are a brilliant presenter and really knowledgeable about the UK and all the sites you visit. You should be presenting a National Geographic tv show !! Fabulous guys, hope you are enjoying your visit to the UK again. Cheers
Loved your video! You guys make a great presentation. And I'm jealous you were able to take your dog with you! My wife and I took the kids through Winchester at the end of May 2023 and we absolutely loved it! We took the Cathedral tour, presented by this wonderful old lady volunteering her time to be there. I highly recommend the tour next time you go. Our kids enjoyed making stain glass windows in the upper area and the little library there was to die for. There's so much to see at that Cathedral. Thank you for showing the Black Boy - looks like a fun place to check out! We enjoyed eating at the God Begot house on High Street and highly recommend. The Great Hall was incredible to see as well. I should point out that the table was commissioned by King Edward I, who promoted the Arthurian legends to promote his reign. It's not the actual round table, which was actually a myth. But it is very historical and interesting to see. I got really caught up looking at the massive columns at the Great Hall. That river walk was amazing too!
I haven't seen all your videos, but if you haven't been to Warwick Castle - you have to go! Rich history to see and experience there.
Two lovely people.
The fact you include your dog when coming on holiday, makes you #1 in my book.
Thank you! We love her.
@@TheMagicGeekdom HI! I did write a comment i dont know if you red it or not but I agree with this and happy your dog got to travel with you!!
Winchester is lovely! I would definitely recommend Portsmouth/Southsea...historic dockyard, Mary Rose, spinnaker Tower and the lovely seafront. New Forest is beautiful as is the South Downs. Enjoy! The titanic museum in Southampton is pretty cool too. Petworth House and Arundel Castle in the South Downs are beautiful. If you're looking for pretty coastline Chichester Harbour AONB is very picturesque
Come over to the Isle of Wight, we have castles, beaches and miles of coast line for Carly to walk about with you ❤
The market happens every week! The lady playing the harp is there every weekend and we also have a man who sits in a spiffy white suit with his electric guitar playing blues covers. We often have food festivals that involve the local business too. Our Hat fair is also another wonderful event with street performers, good food stalls, pop up craft stations that let you learn skills such as wood carving and lots of flowers crowns!
Our Christmas Market is also considered one of the best, the whole cathedral is transformed with an ice rink and giant coldron of mulled wine in the center of the garden grounds
Those houses you saw on the river cost over a million pounds 😅 and unfortunately the black boy closed recently
Thanks for the info! We'd love to visit the Christmas market.
Awww! Cant believe you came to Winch! Love the videos and if you pass by again, let me know as we would love to show you WInchester College, the water meadows, St Catherines Hill, St Cross church. Missed so much good stuff! Have a wonderful trip and hope to see you back soon.
Thank you, Roger! We would love to come back at some point.
Same it’s amazing I live here
Im in love with winchester cuz the last kingdom and vikings show. I lived in indonesia hopefully someday ill be able to visit this beautiful city
I went to the University of Winchester in 2009-2012. I graduated in the cathedral!
Always a pleasure to watch your vids. Thankyou both. Good to learn about the places you go too, even with me being British. I still learn a lot from you about the Country. All the best to you guys!😃
Thank you, Connor! Also, I like your Majora's Mask icon!
I am glad you're really enjoying your travels. And be totally aware you have visited more places in the UK than most people in the UK, or at least me 😉
Mat c that's because people in this country always think it must be better abroad. Take a lovely country or seaside scene and the comment us y could almost be abroad it annoys as does that saga advert
@@tenniskinsella7768 True. But it's the same locally. A lot of people, including myself, just become 'bind' to our own local spots sometimes too. It's a good lesson in making the very most of the weekends, whenever possible and seeking out and travelling to new, exciting and unusual places in the UK. And still go abroad once a year. Routines and ruts don't help.
The wedding gates are like something out of Game of Thrones. You should visit Portmeirion next time you are in Wales. It's like a mini Italian village. I think you'll find it fascinating.
That sounds really interesting! We need to visit there. There's some much more of Wales for us to see.
@@TheMagicGeekdom They filmed the 60s cult series The Prisoner in Port Meirion . Its well worth a visit. I believe that The Beatles filmed a video there too.
Also Lincoln in Lincolnshire is beautiful with a cathedral and shops x
Great post guys. Keep em coming. I love the Pumpkins 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings' reference😉
Jeremy has such cool vibes, which are a wonderful accompaniment to Cara's enthusiasm. Glad you're enjoying the trip and hope you get to do some fossil hunting in dorset.
I live just around the corner I wish I knew you were coming, I would love to have met up!
I love your videos - especially when you give your food commentary too! Jane Austin’s house which is in the village of Chawton near Alton, is open to visitors if you’re interested in that. As for Cathedrals, it’s not south but Lincoln is well worth visiting. I particularly like the sight of it on the approach to the city.
Thank you! We really enjoyed Winchester, but we are currently enjoying Lincoln. So, there will be a video in the future.
Even though I'm from these shores I find your vlogs interesting. I live ten miles from York city centre I've visited well over 500times but it still has holiday vibes to the place especially on a summers sunny evening.
Southampton is full of great architecture, museums, theatres, churches, art galleries, pubs, restaurants, shops and shopping malls. There are parks and green spaces everywhere. The city is a major port on the confluence of two rivers (the Test & the Itchen) and has great transport links.
Envy you heading to Dorset. So much to see from East to West. Christchurch with its priory to Lyme Regis with its Cobb and everything in between. Enjoy!
You both do great videos , here's hoping you never stop posting.
Thank you!
Love your turquoise glasses, they’re cool 😎
Hi Cara, I love your nail polish by the way 😊. I'm enjoying your travels around the UK. Hope you come back to the north east soon.
If you’re going to Dorset you need to visit the village of Milton Abbas, it’s beautiful. I live in one of the 17th century cottages, If I’m home I’ll show you around it. You can also visit the Abbey. It’s stunning on a sunny day.
Thank you for the suggestions!
I hope you enjoyed Winchester. I graduated there in the cathedral and we couldn't wear our mortarboard caps inside because it's a cathedral which was a bit lame! Also lived with a lovely girl from Ohio when in student halls.
If your driving from Winchester to Dorset ,you won't miss the new forest, you will drive through it 👍
The army museums are pretty cool as well, get one ticket and you get into all of them.
Try Hamble, Warsash and Lee on Solent. We are now part of The English Coast Path.
I must visit Winchester one day.
You should!
Love all your travels you guy’s 👍
We love Winchester. It is such a great city to explore and has sooooo much history.
This is another amazing place in the UK to visit. England at it's best. Thank you for highlighting this
Great city and our real capital. Home to the greatest king we have ever had and the heart of the nation.
It is a really cool city!
And, apparently, missed his statue?
@@adventussaxonum448 Angelcynn 🗡
Awww thanks for going to the cathedral ❤🎉 you were at my old uni mates old work wentthere for a gin night once., my old work over the brige 'chesil recory' few meters away is beaut but yeh black boy i will have to definatly semd her this ❤️ wish i was there would have shown you around x
Pleased you visited Winchester, one of my favourite English cities. As an architectural historian I would consider the Cathedral one of the top 5 or 6 in the U.K. even though externally it’s not as immediately impressive as some others.
Cara will be glad to hear it's in your top 5.
What are your top 5?
Glad you’re both enjoying living in England and seeing our history and architecture.
Love your videos as always ❤
Hope one day you will visit Norwich the riverside walk is amazing,we have a cathedral in fact we have two ! A castle,a church for every week of the year and a pub for every day of the year 😊love your work guys
Absolutely brilliant, your enthusiasm is infectious, always feel happier after watching one of your videos, thank you x 17.50
Thank you, Barry!
I did my basic army training at Peninsula Barracks. Now apartments.
The crypt is great with the Antony Gormley piece stood in the water is so cool.
Thank you for another fantastic video. I was born in Winchester.
I actually used to work in that Pizza Express and the mill being next door was a constant cause of problems for us. It would regularly flood and fill our downstairs potwash area knee deep with water!
The first time I went to Winchester the Great Hall didn't charge for admission. I especially like the Bishop's Palace and spotting little remains of the Norman Palace in the backs of some of the shops on the High Street
Great video liked and subscribed 🙂
Top 4 UK Cathedrals: Lincoln, Salisbury, Durham, York
Love your vlog of the city and cathedral! I can't wait to visit!!
You guys should get the hovercraft over to the Isle of Wight, the New forest is lovely I live there, your doggo would love it, it's full of free roaming horses too
I second this suggestion. If you go across to the Isle of Wight in summer you can get a bus that goes all along the coast from Ryde (where the hovercraft lands) to Freshwater Bay, where there is an Open-Top bus ride out to The Needles, an old Napoleonic-WW1 era site that was also used for the UK's early space programme-all perched on top of chalk cliffs hundreds of feet above the sea. The island has neolithic, Roman, Medieval, Tudor and Victorian sites (not least Victoria and Albert's holiday home of Osborne House). Oh, and dinosaurs.
Yes! I love the eavesdropping tour 😉
You weren't that far from me! I live in the town of Gosport, which is next to Portsmouth, just a short car journey from Winchester.
If you're looking for recommendations for when you're in Hampshire again, give Portsmouth a go and visit Spinnaker Tower and the Historic Dockyard, you'll get a great view of the city and harbour and the chance to see the remains of the Mary Rose, the flagship of King Henry VIII.
If you take a trip up Portsdown Hill on the outskirts of Portsmouth, you'll get an amazing view, and can visit Royal Armouries: Fort Nelson, an artillery museum.
Gosport itself doesn't have much going for it unfortunately, but there are a few small naval museums here.
I'm biased as I am born and bred - my suggestion of a city to visit would be Exeter. Exeter Cathedral is just amazing, you can also see original roman walls and the historic Quay area... Happy travels around our beautiful country!
That sounds lovely. We'll add that to our list.
Check out Arundel castle. Don't miss the prayer book of Mary Queen of Scots. There are loads of historic museums in Portsmouth. Romsey Abbey, well worth a visit.
Hope that helps.
GREAT VIDEO
Thank you, Julian!
My hometown, much missed as I no longer have any family or friends there and no particular reason to return. The Black Boy is a great pub and not one you'd just stumble across, you were well advised. Sad to hear the Great Hall is charging admission now - it always used to be a place you could just wander into.
Could you tell us the location of that cute AirBnB you stayed at in Winchester? It looked so darn cute!!! Great video guts. Thank you❣️
How fun that you made it there on a market day!
Really pleased you are having a good time. 🙂
If you want to visit some lovely beaches over the summer the Isle of Wight is such a lovely place to go! We also have the UKs oldest “theme park” Blackgang Chine - dogs are allowed inside - which is a great day out and has some amazing views out to sea! It is also host to some great wildlife and one of few places you can see red squirrels in nature due to the Solent separating us from
Mainland UK stopping the grey squirrels from being able to fight them. Osbourne house is a lovely national trust property what used to be the holiday home for queen Victoria, you can walk around the property itself, all of the grounds including her private beach and the children’s play house, definitely worth a visit!
Petersfield is lovely.... 25 north of Portsmouth. Gorgeous historic market town with lots of history and great atmosphere ...
25 minutes north
I've been in that Pizza Express a few times. Haven't been back to Winchester in a few years, but know it very well. doesn't seem to have changed much.
Great to see you both and lovely Carly, The pizza looked great. Hope you both have fun in Dorset looking forward to your next one take care xx Pam in Edinburgh
Thank you, Pam!
Aaahh. Love seeing you guys on your travels. You always give me a little “lift” for the day 😍 Thank you for sharing your fantastic videos. And I love it when I see a sneaky peek of your beautiful woofer, too 😁
Awe, thank you!
We will have to go here someday. TFS
Another brilliant video! As a recommendation I’d suggest Salisbury PS your little dog puts a big smile on my face.🙂
Skipping the New Forest and not even mentioning the Isle of Wight? Oh dear. If only I was still living there I would have gladly shown you guys around :-) So much natural beauty and history. Anyhoo, still loving your channel guys - keep up the good work.
We enjoyed the Christmas market at Winchester, as for Dorset take a trip back to 1973 and visit Swanage and if you want a beautiful beach try Studland bay.
And Dorset's crowning glory Corf Castle which you can get to on the steam railway from Swanage.
I live in Dorset, I recommend that you go to the Iron Age Badbury Rings, the drive along the beech lined road up to the Rings is also outstanding.
There is so much in this county but I mention Badbury because its largely unknown and well worth a visit...its free and the dog will love it.
I went to Uni there in the 90s and made a really rubbish tourist guide as a student project interviewing a lady from the tourist office. Good times.
