Hey guys! Thanks so much for the amazing response to the last video. I'm back again with another legato lesson - this time looking at muting technique and specifically my favourite sound - palm muted legato! Hope you enjoy it and be sure to leave your comments and questions below. Have a great week. Tom
Could you please consider using a compressor for your voice track or add some gain? Your speaking is much quieter than your guitar level and I have to keep adjusting the volume control. I listen through monitoring headphones.
@@salungaitan7194 Rick Graham is a close second for me, but I still consider Graham style still somewhat (albeit not strictly) focused to old-school conventional smooth legato with emphasis on modes and extended voicing string-skipped arpeggios... whereas Tom sound a bit more close-ranged interval note-wise and somehow a little more abrasive
From what I've seen on RUclips, you are by far my favorite guitar teacher. You explain everything so clearly and in detail, while in the meantime we get to listen to your ingenuity. Thank you Tom.
Wow, a 23 minute video, and no Signature TQ Blues lick! I think I am getting withdrawal symptoms! 😂😂😂 J/K. I am really loving this new format of video content! Keep up the good work, and don’t feel pressured into releasing a new video each week. We fans will happily accept whatever we are given. Cheers from the United States!
So grateful for the generous way you share your knowledge and skills. 🙏 I participate in your paid endeavors as well, but consistently find gems here on RUclips.
The video on the lazy first finger has revealed so much to me! After a few days I can say that being aware of it will be a major step in my technique. I'm about to try this too. Thanks Tom!
Great work here Tom! You can hear how Nuno from Extreme used this technique extensively on his first 2 albums. It's how he got that "super sharp" clean scale playing coming through so well. A lot of people think Nuno was alternate picking many of his lines, but much of it was this type of technique, which does sound like it's being "lightly" picked per note. And, truly, Van Halen used this "palm muted" legato as well, so it's been around for some time actually.
That is a hybrid yet practical playing technique that unleashes smooth sound and gets rid of noise. I'm a big fan, Tom. You're my second fave mentor, first is Rick Beato. I started following you since 2010. I learned a lot from this. Really. I'm from the suburb area here in the Philippines.
Hi Tom, seems that you, Rick G. and Jack G are all coming from the same music school, you all are just fantastic guitarist and quite excellent teachers . Best for you
I have always wondered what you did to get that muted legato sound, and you just showed it to us just like that. Thank you for sharing your knowledge Tom! Greetings from India. 🙏
Tom, this is incredible. Your way of showing these things is really really great, shows how much you understand the process of teaching guitar. But I would like to learn more about your style of hybrid picking. The legato part of the video is actually easier for me to understand, but I feel that the hybrid picking style adds to this very nicely. I can see that you usually start a run with the pick but then when you go up the strings you do an upstroke with your finger, which adds a softness to the sound. And you use your pick to go down the strings also with an upstroke. I know it's hard work, but maybe if you feel like going into more details on this technique in future videos, it would be great. Thank you for the video!
Hey Tom loved the content but I’m really new to legato, I would love to see a basic Legato tutorial and make sure I don’t do the wrong stuff. Keep up the good work~~~
Hello from France. You are just amazing. I wish I could play like you. I work hard but never enough to reach your level 😢. I love to hear your sound and style. Great job!!! Keep making us dream...
I love your delivery BTW. It really feels like you're giving me (and just me) a lesson .. I've caught myself going "hang on - what did you mean there?" and only then realising it's a video .. Sorry to sound a little "gushy" - I'm aware of that - but I am getting a lot out of these videos so I'd like you to continue to do them!! :-D
Around 10:00 Tom discusses palm muting picked notes and letting hybrid picked notes ring. I've been trying to find a technique that works for me to mute hybrid picked notes too. If I roll my palm to mute the higher strings, my hand is out of position to pick with my fingers. I'm coming from a finger style background, so may need to adjust my picking hand position for hybrid picking/muting.
Do you have a video that explains exactly what you are doing with the picking hand, as far as pick and the middle finger, along with left hand, fretting, timing etc. ? Oh, looking through more videos you just suggested, now.
Beautiful lines and excellent breakdowns of your technique. Almost reminds me of Holdsworths early tone with Tempest and the SG / LP he was using. Plenty of homework here, Thks.
He tunes the top two strings to C and F like Stanley Jordan does, I suppose to avoid the change in the scale patterns with that happens when you approach the second string. Well, I guess if it works for him, but it doesn’t seem like that much of a problem to memorize a few idiosyncrasies in scale pattern? It also makes playing chords a lot more effective to do it with the normal way.
Very lively playing that sounds passionate. As a guitarist for book trailers about comics who's looking for inspiration, your technique here is nice since it's emotive and captivates the ear. Cheers!
Tom: I suck at picking Also Tom: meedley, meedley, meedley, meedley, meedley. Yeah, sorry Tom, really think you are incorrect on that one. Neat lesson, thanks! Cheers!
my primary form of execution - death by legato! interesting just seen rick's lesson on this, also posted today. interesting how the applications are used differently. its almost like the universe is showing me the way :)
Hey Tom, when I watch you play, I notice you use a couple of "devices," to transition from one location on the fret board to the next. I was wondering if you've have done or could do a video on some of your habits?
Dear Mr Quayle, ,Question... Do I put questions here? Going up the scale .. why roll the hand , is it not possible to leave the side of the right hand over all the strings for the whole passage? And .. descending ... how do you keep the first finger muting strings if you need it to play notes as well ? Or maybe I’m just doing it wrong . Thank you for your attention
Hi Tom, first of all thank you very much for sharing this video. I want to tell you that I don't have a good command of English and I would like to be able to understand everything you say. This video does not have the possibility of enabling the subtitles. Is there a way to correct that configuration? Thank you. Greetings!
Hello. It would be a great learning experience if we could take a picture of the camera from the perspective of when we play the guitar. Please come to Japan again when the world gets better. I'm sorry if my English is strange.
Great stuff (the technique and the info about it)! Unfortunately, I didn't find the link (lots of missing page links here) to your AxeFX3 preset (low tube screamer gain tone without compression) you mentioned.
Another great video. Gotta love that "tucka tucka" sound. Please keep them coming, and don't forget to like a subscribe......oh wait, that's me. Cheers

Fantastic mate!!! more lessons from you.
Is there any chance that Ibanez will release this iteration of your signature guitar as a production model? I like it a lot!
We'll see - not these exact specs for sure, it'd be way too expensive. But perhaps an interation of it.
Could you please consider using a compressor for your voice track or add some gain? Your speaking is much quieter than your guitar level and I have to keep adjusting the volume control.
I listen through monitoring headphones.
Open the valve, Tom...
Man the way this is shot and presented makes it feel so much like a one on one private lesson - absolutely lovely!
Could you please please please convert his signature patch to work on AX8.
I was thinking the same thing
honestly, *"hybrid picked palm muted legato"* is your signature technique, Tom
Rick Graham ?

@@teuwaisu6204 It's ALL in the chromaticism.
👍😎🍺
Yep,his legato sounds like keyboard and violin, not only guitar legato sound~I love it~
Rick was his teacher as far as i know.
The real "Nuno" technique ... Awesome crispy clean sound.
God damn that Ibanez is sick
Awesome man. Nuno does this too. Nuno's muting technique is incredible too.
Oh yeah!!!!! Great Lesson for the whole world's guitarist !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Youre a great teacher Tom
Well this video answer my question on previous video about noise... Thanks Tom!
Man you are completely the epitome of effortlessness.. it's mesmerising! Thanks, Tom. The best to you!
TQ is just on another level. Just amazing! He has to have been playing for months!

I can hardly believe I'm getting lesson in my own home from Tom Quayle, "the man" himself. Nobody pinch me.
That Ibanez is sick

Great video. My legato is improving. Thank you. No just need to incorporate hybrid picking
I'm so glad you are back doing what you do best man 🤘🤘🤘 pls keep going with legato videos - legato sequences would be rad
My God. This is the first time I've ever seen you play. Beautiful sounds. Beautiful playing. Beautiful guitar.
I love this so much! I’m watching (listening) while working and chewing at the bits to get home and get started on this!
in this lesson of muting, i learnt the basics of hybrid picking as well. Incredible !!
Здорово мне нравится твоя техника игры и извлечения звука.
I like how you mentioned taking the gain down a bit - it sounds so much better and cleaner.Great lesson and inspiring as always.

Awesome lesson, timing of this could not be better for me, thanks Tom
Really open up my mind especially the way you use both the pick and other fingers together to make that smooth move. Lovely lesson!
I think this is the reason why you always sound boutique Tom, I tried incorporate this technique into my playing.
Seriously the best RUclips guitar lesson. Thanks, Tom!
I stop by to watch Tom's vids just to see the player I'll never be.
I have always wondered what you did to get that muted legato sound, and you just showed it to us just like that. Thank you for sharing your knowledge Tom! Greetings from India. 🙏
Great advice again. Nobody knows better than Tom Quayle when it comes to these things.

Love that you're back to lessons content Tom - thank you!!!

Great explanation of a very technical tool, Tom!
Tom this is what I was looking for :) thank you brother...
Great lesson! It’s the same technique used a lot by Nick Johnston, although I think your version is crisper and more articulate.
Great video and awesome preset. Love your technique!!!
Hey, Tom! Do you happen to have any transcriptions of licks like the one at 11:02? I love the longer flowing type lines you do like this.
Hello. It would be a great learning experience if we could take a picture of the camera from the perspective of when we play the guitar. Please come to Japan again when the world gets better. I'm sorry if my English is strange.
I've often wondered about that too! I can't WAIT to get back over to Japan as soon as possible.

That's how this technique should be called, IMHO.

Can you do a separate practice video hot hybrid picking? I am really trying to get into it but I struggle with it
Great stuff (the technique and the info about it)! Unfortunately, I didn't find the link (lots of missing page links here) to your AxeFX3 preset (low tube screamer gain tone without compression) you mentioned.
Superb lesson Tom! Very insightful! Thank you
