Yeah that knocked me too, I thought , sure maybe some dialogue off the cuff and a few details and quirks here and there , but for the only real structure to be an outline ?!! The storytelling is just so smooth among 3 separate narrators that even with editing and cutting and retakes etc , that amount of improvisation producing that quality of storytelling is truly spectacular
3P being a trio of millennial college friends makes me realize exactly why I feel so cozy in their storytelling. I had kind of been hoping to see what they looked like, but staying anonymous just adds to the ambience in a big way.
You can tell a couple of them by their voice alone, like one is Danni Carr :D Maybe that's just me, cause I wanted to be a voice actor but yeah never was in the cards for it
I had NO idea Midst was mostly improvised. It's so... coherent? And flows so nicely? The dialogue and narration, the off-the-cuff interruptions, and the shifts in character perspectives work so unbelievably well for something that isn't scripted ahead of time, it really speaks to just how incredibly talented Third Person is as storytellers. I am so excited for season two!
I, personally, never want to know who they are. Their anonymous and ethereal storytelling dynamic is so unique and engaging. Please keep doing your thing and if CR is the catalyst for Midst to keep progressing, then I'm here for it. The imperfection of it all makes it that much more meaningful. Love you guys.
I feel so lucky to have bought into Midst early. When I was a janitor around 2020 I started listening to Midst on the Castbox app, all the way through to the end of season 2! I'm glad to see Third Person getting the attention and spotlight they deserve. I'm excited to see how everyone reacts to THAT ending.
I was kinda disappointed that so many CR fans decided to pass on this masterpiece, it's such a fantastic way of world building and storytelling. Can't wait for season two!
I for one gave them a chance but quickly found them to be irritating and annoying. I wasn't going to post about it and complain but if you're asking why people are passing on it, I can go into it more.
@@junkname9983 I get that, it's not for you and that's perfectly fine, but at least you gave it a shot. However a lot of people don't even want to check it out, and I'm sure some of them would find it really enjoyable.

WAY too many are sleeping on this series. I think the first few episodes can be a hurdle (1-3) but it is SO worth it once you’re past that and get a better grasp of the setting and plot.
I got hooked from the episode that starts with a character going about his day, having a a lovely day where nothing could go wrong, it's just perfect, a nice day, he's at the post office. And then the narrators go "unless he walks into... Oh no he did, oh... Well, he's just absolutely fucked now". I checked, it's episode 5 :)
Midst is so great. I love the format, Critical Role takes up all my free time, but Midst is short enough that I can make it fit. It's also at a very bingeable point, everybody should listen. Also also, Xen's voice is like a balm for the soul.
When the trio narrators were talking about their beginnings and the open improving nature of their game, it really reminded me of my time in forums doing play-by-post RP without any system in place. Everyone just brought a character, from where/when ever, to this hub world we all silently agreed to be in and just played. At the time, it really sparked me to be better at writing, and it helped me improve in my English classes as it pushed me to further research/study on my own. I still carry my paracosm portion from that time, and it's expanded to much bigger things since. Thank you for sharing this story! It has been such a delight to listen to while working.
I miss those days. Had a bit of a writing prompt on my social Ms the other day and me and a friend went back and forth for hours, it was a fun adventure
You know what. I'm gonna stop now. Like 4 minutes in. I'm going back and listening to it all. I've seen all of CR's goofy one shots. This deserves as much respect as those.
I've loved Midst and I'm so happy CR shone a light. When they say "its like VR for your brain" they aren't kidding: it makes my brain go brrrrr in the best way.
I've heard of people having a Narrator voice but never have a heard three that managed to not only nail it but work off each each other in such a cool way is so freaking incredible.
I would watch the heck out of an episode with Third Person as a guest character. There's an obvious character idea in there somewhere where it's one person with three voices in their head.
theyd kinda be incredible as a PC at the table, imagine having two people to remind you of any actions or spells you forgot during combat. or even the complete opposite where they just distract each other would be entertaining
This was such a good and interesting interview. I love to hear about the process of how creative things get made, especially with something like this that is so unlike anything I have heard before. I am so looking forward to the 2nd season.
The fact that I literally started reading perdido street station the same day that I started listening to midst is so wild. To find out that that book informed a lot of the style is cool because at the time I had no idea there was a connection and I felt that the absolute wave of information through perspective that you get in both stories was very similar. That’s serendipity at its finest!
23:52 It reminds me of high school, a couple friends pass around a spiral notebook, you write two pages, I write two pages, the next person writes two pages and it does it’s rounds.
I absolutely LOVE Midst, and I wish it got more attention. 3P certainly deserves it, ya'll are fantastic. I wish I had the money to sub, I'm *desperate* to see the world building extra materials. Thank you so so much, CR, for sharing them with us!
Man, i did not expect to fangirl over these folks even more, but i guess i shouldn't be surprised. It is clear from the recordings that they have incredible chemistry. They're just absolutely being themselves in the narration
Thought the idea of a podcast while being used to watching critical role on RUclips was weird. Gave it a chance while walking my dog, subscribed for a year after season 1. Give it a chance, listen to a couple of episodes. Love it.
I love that even though i'm not sure if i've ever heard anyone say that season 1 of midst was just a "tutorial" or intro, it already felt like it and i loved that, because all i could think when i finished season 1 was "if that is the intro/the setup/the prologue for the actual story later, then the rest is gonna be hectic af" And without spoiling anything, the rest definitely lived up to those expectations and even then it still feels like some new and interesting things are being established, while also some previously established stuff becoming more elaborate and i love that so much.
I got in a little late, binging season 1 altogether was SO FUN. I was hooked from the first episode. Such beautifully narrated distinct characters, in bite sized episodes! Love it. Can’t wait for the next seasons.
I really enjoyed Midst but I really shouldnt have. It's everything I dislike: western, space, post-apocalyptic, and more! But 3P were so fantastic with their storytelling, I couldn't help but be fascinated.
I've only been able to listen to the first few episodes (and half this interview) but the show has really stuck in my mind the past few months. Really looking forward to having more time to spare someday so I can really let myself be immersed in Midst!
I am in awe of this project, and of the work that goes into it. I love the dynamic between the three narrators (I did not realise there were three, always sounded like two) They speak, interject and disagree, exactly as in the story, and that shows how well they read each other This is an extraordinary project, and I love it!

I was slow on the uptake with this as life is busy. Midst is SO GOOD!!! I found myself completely addicted and binging the episodes whilst moving house. Love the 3 narators so much! Looking forward to Season 2!!! Thanks!!!
I really appreciate this and it was enough to get me to pull the trigger on a subscription. I love the story and have been trying to share it with everyone!
Interesting that they started out by doing a kind of DM-less ttrpg. I always thought it would be very difficult and not worth the trouble to do something like that but it sounds very fun. I guess I'll have to give it a try. Super excited for season 2 O:
Their method sounds similar to the Ten Candles system, in that it too has no one singular DM, but everyone is the primary driver of their own character and the NPCs are a free for all
Midst performance has not been great in the 4 months its been on RUclips. Which is extremely unfortunate given how fascinating I find the world. I hope Critical Role can lend more of its starpower to this until people find out that they're missing out!
The problem isn't that people haven't found out. The main problem is that Midst had already been around for 4 years before CR got a hold of it. Most people who were actually interested had most likely heard it already. The second thing being that CR pissed off A LOT of people by pulling the episodes just to reupload them onto their channel. And, of course, the third thing being that Midst really isn't that interesting. I expect season 2 to perform just as badly as season 1. Perhaps season 3 will change that since a brand new season would potentially attract the old existing Midst fans. Then again, I don't really know how popular Midst was before CR acquired them. Could be that Midst now has 10X the viewership, or just 1/10.
If it was good, it would have a bigger audience. And of course it performs poorly on RUclips. Even if it were good, Critical Role fans don't come to the critical role youtube channel to watch things that aren't Critical Role or other things the cast is involved directly in. The consistently dropping view count shows that the audience had spoken about what they think about it.
personally I prefer to listen to Midst on my podcast app, so I rarely watch on RUclips. Wonder how many people are similar, what the podcast feed download numbers are like
