Marisa Tomei’s breakout role. She won a Best Actress Oscar for this. It’s hard to overshadow Joe Pesci, but she does it, and he’s very good too. One of my more rewatchable movies.

That owl is a small owl, known as a Screech Owl, for obvious reasons. We have the owls who say "who" also in the USA.

Screech owls don't actually sound like that though. You'll find videos here on YT which catalogue the various calls, but the most common is more like a high pitched purr, and is called a "tremolo". Another call sounds very much like a tiny donkey, but it's almost soothing if you grow up in a rural area.

Joe Pesci's other most famous role is in GOODFELLAS, a true to life gangster story based on the memoir Wiseguy. Wonderful reaction today!

Few good ones Joe Pesci flicks are Lethal weapons 2, 3 and 4, and Casino (1995)

His role in the Lethal Weapon Sequels also deserves mention
I think he was better in Casino.
I can't say enough good things about this movie. Every lawyer will sell you this is in their top 5 movies. It's as realistic as law on film can be while maintaining humor and pacing. It also represents the North v South divide in the U.S. extremely well.
Most importantly, there is no villain, just people working within a system.

Joe Pesci is a terrific dramatic actor, most famous for his role in Goodfellas. He also had a recurring role in Lethal Weapon 2,3 and 4.
A couple of fun facts. First was that Joe Pesci and Fred Gwynne (the judge) were good friends in real life, which is why their chemistry and bickering were so good!! Also, the second fun fact was that the scene when Vinny accidentally hits the judge's chess board....was an actual accident. The genuine reactions by both Joe Pesci and Fred Gwynne were so good, they kept the scene in! :) Also, that owl was real and the sound coming from it was real too. It's a screech owl.
Joe Pesci is mostly known for playing gangster roles, Movies like Goodfellas, Casino, The Irishman. Ithink you'll be shocked at his roles in these movies. Its hard to believe hes almost 80 now
The make-up artist for My Cousin Vinny used bands hidden in his hair and glued to his scalp to pull his face up (a sort of temporary face-lift technique), to make him look younger for the role of Vinnie. You can see how the skin around his eyes seem pulled up and pinched in some scenes, that give the appliances away, but overall it worked pretty convincingly to make him look younger.
Find a movie called "The Public Eye", a very rarely seen Joe Pesci film. Pretty good, but boy is it obscure.
We missed her iconic stomping of her foot in this one, but at least you got to see it, one of the funniest movie moments ever 🤣🤣🤣

Their accents are New York City accents likely from Brooklyn, so Vinny was accustomed to continuous noise as in the prison or jail, so he was able to sleep in jail. It was the occasional noise, such as the screech owl or train whistle, which kept him awake.
Yup. People from the big city often have trouble sleeping at first when they go to the country because it's too quiet.

By the way Fred Gwynne was better known as Herman Munster in the classic tv series The Munsters and Marisa Tomei won an Oscar for best supporting actress for this film. Joe Pesci is most known for his role as the gangster Tommy DeVito in the drama "Goodfellas". Ralph Maccio is known for the lead actor in "Karate Kid" and "Crossroads". Fred Gwynne (the judge) is known for two black and white TV comedies "Car 54, Where Are You" (1961 -1963) and in "The Munsters" (1964 -1966), a comedy/parody of Frankenstein's Monster. A couple of the Americanisms in this:
- Vinnie is from New York, where people have a reputation for being sort of fast-paced and graceless. He's also an Italian-American, which implies double the gracelessness.
- Alabama is part of the South, and part of the Southern vibe is a slower-paced way of life, but also they put a lot of stock in manners and formality. Either that or else there is a sort of pride in rejecting manners and formality ("rednecks"), so Vinnie sort of speaks the same language as the pool players.

No matter where you are you still have to wear a suit in court and stand up to talk to the judge.

"Grits" is a sort of porridge made from coarsely ground corn (maize to you). It is very similar to polenta, if you know what that is. The raw ground corn resembles the kind of grit you'd use on an icy path, hence the name. It can be made with water or milk, and is usually served with butter. A specialty is _cheese grits_ which can be made with cream cheese. (Cream cheese makes everything better!) I didn't know instant grits were a thing until I saw this movie, but he's correct it takes a fair bit of time to make real grits.
I wouldn't trouble myself with instant grits if I were you. They were the first introduction I had to grits, and convinced me for decades that I didn't like them. Thankfully, I have since been enlightened.
I haven't had the pleasure of eating grits, but I wouldn't mind trying them. Not instant of course.
The Judge (Fred Gwynne) had a couple comedy shows in the 60s.. He played a police officer in Car 54, Where Are You and Herman Munster in The Munsters... both in black and white..
Joe Pesci started out as a musician. When he was just 16, he introduced Frankie Valli to Bob Gaudio, which led to the formation of the iconic music group The Four Seasons (which is why Joe is a character in the play/movie Jersey Boys).
A: This movie always makes me laugh no matter how many times I've seen it. B: I could listen to you talk all day, it's like going being home with family! Keep it up!
Joe Pesci is an amazing actor. He was in Leathal Weapon 2, 3 and 4. Raging Bull, Casino, Good Fellas. Those are all really good movies he has been in

The actor who played the judge played Herman Munster ("The Munsters")
If the Judge looked familiar, the actor named Fred Gwynne played "Herman Munster" in the 1960's series "The Munsters" where he was made up to look like a Frankenstein's Monster. He attended Harvard University, & was a cartoonist for the Harvard Lampoon (eventually becoming its president). He has a long line of professional acting credits from 1954 until his death shortly after this movie came out. Definitely had some great comedy "chops", and had roles as a straight man against a comedian partner where comedic timing is essential. There is a Wikipedia page (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Gwynne) enumerating his many talents and accomplishments.
The great Fred Gwynne in his final role as the judge. He used to play Herman Munster in the old mid-sixties sitcom "The Munsters," a show about a very normal family of monsters living in the suburbs. Obviously a very different character than what he played in My Cousin Vinny.
I mostly remember Fred Gwynne from Pet Sematary!
Also "Car 54, Where Are You?", another old classic b&w sitcom where he plays a cop. Fred was a gem.

Joe Pesci in "Goodfellas" was amazing. The boy who was accused of murder was played by Ralph Macchio, who appears in a ton of different things but my most favorite and underrated being "The Outsiders" that had a lot of future super star actors who were really young at the time such as Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon & Emilio Estevez. It's an older movie based on an older book but I still think it's amazing & holds up really well today.
Joe and Marissa are portraying Italian-American people from New York City, which is a world away from Alabama, culturally - and that adorable tiny little owl is called a screech owl. They usually make a cute little peeping noise but can be loud at times.
Marissa Tomei is in a lot of movies. Most recently she has been Spiderman's Aunt. Ralph Macchio is the "Karate Kid " - a wonderful series of movies, with a TV spinoff called Kobra Kai.
RIP the late great Fred Gwynne...who played the Judge and also was Herman Munster on the TV sitcom of that name.

Joe Pesci was most well known for his role as a psychopath gangster in Goodfellas.
Ralph Maccio who played Bill was typecast after the Karate Kid so couldn't really get major work but the director didn't know him because he is English.
Same for the judge who was Herman Munster.
Vinny's cousin was played by Ralph Macchio , who you can see in the Karate Kid movies. Joe Pesci is most notable for playing gangsters like in Good Fellas or Casino.
He still looks so young because of that genetic disorder at the age of 60. He looks around 40 tops.

Look at a movie called Good Fellas" with Joe Pesci, the Judge played Herman Munster in "The Munsters" one of America's favorite comedy's in the late 60's and the boy who was being accused of murder played "The Karate Kid" years ago and of course Marisa Tomei played in Anger Management, Only You, What women want, Spiderman, Crazy, Stupid Love, Only you and many other flicks. Great reaction. I am becoming a bigger fan with each new flick. The best part about your reactions is that they are low key, by that I mean not over the top or dramatized. You're just you and that's plenty entertaining enough.
I also believe that because you're not distracted by acting out a reaction, it makes you much better than most at actually paying attention to the movie so when you figure something out, I believe it 100% instead of questioning if perhaps you've seen it before like I suspect with other reactors. Nice work and good fun.

That owl is called a Screech Owl, I grew up in the country of southern Illinois and one lived in the woods behind my house and would scream like that at one in morning all the time.
The judge was played by Fred Gwynne ... who played Herman Munster on TV, and before that was Officer Muldoon on "Car 54, Where Are You?"

Our owls do make that noise
We were camping in Austin Texas place called enchanted rock and in sleeping bags and it woke friends up and they were terrified like real terror plus it was pitch black under the stars that night they thought they were goners until we educated them its just owls

LOVE this movie - and as a guy who is 53 and **just** graduated law school (Movie came out in the early 90's in my 20's) it has a special place in my heart.
The judge was played by Fred Gwynne, who played Herman in The Munsters.
A great Joe Pesci movie from around the same time as My Cousin Vinnie is 'With Honors' from 1994...very underrated and one of my favorite movies of all time. It also has a young Brenden Fraser and Patrick Dempsey in it as well.
If you want to see Joe Pesci in his best dramatic role watch "Goodfellas." For a great movie with a great courtroom scene (and it's in black and white) you should watch "To Kill a Mockingbird."

The judge is the fantastic Fred gwynne. An amazing actor, started in a tv comedy called The Munsters! The really took on touchy issues of the day. Also in the Stephen King movie, pet cemetery!!

As someone who was born in Alabama and spent a lot of time with grandparents in a small town in Alabama (Aldrich, just outside Montevallo), this portrays it fairly well. There is a great mistrust of outsiders (my grandmother never trusted my dad who was from one county north, for example).
Grits are a porridge made from hominy, which is corn treated with lye which releases the nutrients (especially thiamine). Hominy is how the Aztecs were able to build an empire on corn whereas the Europeans who took the corn back to the old world struggled with malnutrition. Grits don’t have much taste, so we add butter, cheese, gravy, salt and pepper, etc to make them taste better. However, as we say, grits stick to the ribs, meaning you don’t get hungry very quickly after eating them.
I think the best thing about this movie is that the only bad characters are the ones who did it. They are not in the movie. Everyone is honorable. No one lied. I remembered that when I was on a jury once. It helped.
We watched this movie in law school. Our professor believed that this showed the most authentic procedure steps ever shown in a movie
Law schools have actually used this movie for instructional purposes. Some of the legal details are incorrect, but professors have used some of Vinny's questioning techniques as effective examples.
The menu that just had Breakfast, Lunch, Diner. I can't find anything online about it but I have memories of small establishments having menus like that. It pretty much came down to you had whatever the cook had in stock and wanted to make. There is actually a fancy restaurant near me in my small town that is like that but it's only evening dining but you have couple options from whatever the chef is making that night.
One of my favorite movies. Vinny and Mona Lisa were likely from New York with that accent. My wife and I love this movie because not only is it a great movie and very funny but because we are both originally from the New York Metropolitan area and moved to the South. We are in an Atlanta suburb which is not a small Southern town like in the movie but it's still relatable as transplants from the North (aka Yankees)

The car voir dire question: Back in the 1960s before electronic ignition, cars would have to be regularly "tuned up". A mechanic would move the engine to where the #1 piston is at the top of its stroke, pull off the distributor cap, and set the distributor rotor to a specific angle for proper firing, which he would look up in the book for that engine. So here Lisa not only knows the entire procedure and what engine was made when, but she doesn't even need the book to know "four degrees before top dead center", making this the most glorious smackdown in the history of Earth.
This was Marisa Tomei's first major film role for which she won a well-deserved award. The second time I saw her in a movie I didn't even know she was in it until they rolled the credits at the end. Completely different voice, completely different look. She's *that* good.

Wholesome story warning: My wife and I pretend to have never seen this movie before and watch it at least once a year. It's just as fun now as it was 10 years ago.
That's fun. :) Sign of a good movie is when you get inexplicably tense in the second act when everything's going wrong, despite having seen the ending a dozen times before. Also just love all the character actors filling out the supporting roles in this, it's a dream movie for those who like to point out, "Hey! It's that guy!"

Funny thing, I got a job in northwestern Wyoming. Early on, I went downtown just to look around. There was actually a store that had a similar sign up. Closed, we're all sick.
