"Rain Man" Trivia. My understanding is that the fart scene in the phone booth was entirely impromptu. After Hoffman accidentally cut one while they were filming he just stayed in character adlibbing what he thought Raymond might say and trying, i'd guess, to see if he could make Tom Cruise laugh and the director loved it.

_Rain Man_ was most people's introduction to the autism spectrum. Before that no one outside healthcare professionals really knew what it was. BTW, most autistic people do not have savant syndrome, but the one's who do make the news. _Rain Man_ won four Oscars: Best Picture; Best Director; Best Actor (Hoffman); Best Original Screenplay.
    Some great Hoffman films:
_The Graduate_ (1967) his first leading role and the one that made him a star. With Anne Bancroft and Katherine Ross, directed by Mike Nichols.
_Midnight Cowboy_ (1969) with John Voigt, directed by John Schlesinger. It won three Oscars: Best Picture; Best Director; Best Adapted Screenplay. It is one of the most important films of the 60s.
_Little Big Man_ (1970) A sprawling Western, one of the first mainstream films to portray Native American life fairly accurately. With a great cast including Faye Dunaway and Chief Dan George. George was nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, the first Native American to be nominated by the Academy.
_Kramer vs Kramer_ (1979) with Meryl Streep, directed by Robert Benton. It tells the story of a couple's divorce and its effect on their son. It won five Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Hoffman), Best Supporting Actress (Streep), and Best Adapted Screenplay.
_Tootsie_ (1982) with Jessica Lange, directed by Sydney Pollack. It is one of Hoffman's few romantic comedies. Jessica Lange won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. It is a very funny and touching film. I'm sure you will really enjoy _Tootsie._

Hey Dawn, this was one of the first big-budget movies to cover and explain in depth the condition of Autism.
After this movie parents who didn't understand their children's disability finally had an answer to their dilemma.
They could reach out to the correct professionals to get them help. What an amazing and groundbreaking story that the Rain Man covers.

Fun Fact: Raymond is based on a real-life man named Kim Peek. He is a savant, he has an entire library of books that he has memorized word for word and can quote back any page of them to you. When he reads a book, his left eye reads the left page and his right eye reads the right page at the same time. So he can read a book very quickly and has been through so many of them. There are some documentaries on youtube for anyone who wants to watch it.

Fun Fact: The fart in the phone box wasn't scripted. Hoffman had to fart, so he stayed in character to warn Cruise. Cruise picked up on it and stayed in character as well.
If you want to see where Tom Cruise started, check Risky Business. That's where he got his start. Then there were some sort of memorable ones, then Top Gun made him a superstar.
Dustin Hoffman has had a lot of iconic roles over the years, but the one I think you'd like best is Tootsie.

Ya. Autism wasnt widely known about b4 this movie. U gotta understand, that graphical internet browsers were not available to homes until 1991/ 1992... and weren't common until about 1994... B4 1994, there was very little access to information. Just from books. And even the latest books were already one or two years out of date... I was 18 years old when this movie came out, and had only heard of autism once. Back in 5th grade ( or grade 5, for us Canadians), when in elementary school we were shown a movie called 'Sunrise'... Times were very different before the early 90's. When the only information we could look up were from books, newspapers, or magazines... TV fed us what THEY wanted us to know...

"...You'll make it..." All the feels. One of my fave films of all-time. Cruise and Hoffman are a DynamicDuo and while the latter won a justifiable Oscar the former did not even get nominated. The film's director, Barry Levinson, plays the moderator at the end - the actor who was cast for the role dropped out at the last minute and he filled in. Barry Marrow - who co-wrote the film - also wrote a TV film BILL starring Mickey Rooney about a mentally challenged elderly man that you s/try to see. PS: Abbott & Costello - whose classic 'Who's on First?' routine is vital to the film is another comedy team you s/seek too Dawn.

Another Hoffman film to consider is, (as the movie poster says), 'Little Big Man: Was Either The Most Neglected Hero In History Or A Liar Of Insane Proportion!'. Little Big Man has also been described as a 'Western, Comedy, Drama, Adventure'. Are you excited to share your reactions to more movies in the Star Wars films? Autism is really weird. It's not just one thing. There's lots of features and not everyone has all of them. It's literally a buffet and you don't know what you're gonna get. I love this movie so much, but I've apreciated it more after having a son who struggles with certain things. When I was a kid, there wasn't anything like a general awareness of this and I was kinda on the spectrum. But in the 70s & 80s, you were just a "problem" if you didn't totally fit in. I love that this movie really elevated awareness and sensitivity around what it's like to kinda experience the world differently. This was a great reaction. I'm glad you got to see it.

This was a lovely reaction Dawn. We have a 19 year old son who is on the autism spectrum. It is true that no two people on the spectrum are the same, but our son exhibits a number of behaviors depicted here in Rain Man. Some can be pretty frustrating to deal with from our perspective, but others are quite remarkable. So this movie makes me laugh and cry a bit at the same time as I see our son in it as well. He certainly has made us see the world in a different light. Regarding Tom Cruise films to react to, he has many excellent ones to choose from. I'd recommend something a little different from him - Interview With a Vampire. There was quite the uproar when he was cast as one of the main vampire characters, but he really did an excellent job with the role.

@@carlhartwell7978 Because the CC read "Main Man", not "Rain Man" in that scene.. Plus early in the movie, Raymond would always spell Verns name before he said Main Man. It is SIMPLY a coincidence that the carer (who has only known him for 9 yrs btw) uses the euphemism 'main man' to calm him down, and it happens to sound (admittedly very much) like 'rain man'...but it makes no sense for the rest of the film, let alone with the title!

So why would he do so at the end? Don't be so dense! Yeah, that is really an amazing performance of Dustin Hoffman. One of my other favorites with Dustin Hoffman is the Pekinpah movie Straw Dogs from 1971 (not the remake from 2011). A thriller which takes a brutal and violent turn. Really good, but with a very uncomfortable rape scene, not because it's graphic, but with a disturbing psychological ambiguoutiy. "Stay and have your drink. I'd like to know what you think of cats."

So, for Dustin Hoffman, instead of suggesting one of the movies with one of his many iconic performances like most people are likely to do, I want to suggest a movie called "Hero (1992)", be careful there's lots of movies called Hero, or something like it. This one is also with Geena Davis, Andy Garcia, etc. It's kind of a forgotten and underappreciated movie, that I had kind of forgotten about it myself for a while, but I saw someone else mention it the other day. It's a very funny movie, and Dustin Hoffman's character and performance in it is hilarious. I think you'd like it.
As far as Tom Cruise, uugghhh. I don't know how much you know, or even want to know about this, but he's unfortunately become a real wacked out Scientology nut, which is a whole nother thing. Another couple of films i liked him in are COLLATERAL (2004) best villain ever. With Jamie Fox. and
    H. G. Wells' WAR OF THE WORLDS (2005).
I can't believe the level of genius of Dustin Hoffman's acting in this movie. I also liked him a lot in
MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969) opposite Jon Voight. and
    LITTLE BIG MAN (1970).
    'Hope that helps -

Dustin Hoffman won the “Best Actor Oscar” for this role. I think Tom Cruise should have won “Best Supporting Actor”. The way he did a complete 180º in this movie was just great! He went from a Total Jerk to a very Caring Brother. One of Dustin Hoffman’s best movies is “Little Big Man”. You will love it, it has to do with the “American Indian”, it is so beautifully shot. Great Cinematography!….. SanJoséBob

At the end of the custody hearing, Raymond was whispering to himself, "C-H-A-R-L-I-E, main man," not "Rain Man." African-American men refer to their closest friends as "my main man." Raymond picked up the term from Vern.

Recently discovered your channel. I've been watching your past reactions, especially the Monty Python movies. First off, just let me say that you are a lovely lady. You have a nice smile, great laugh and wonderful sense of humor. I love your accent (I know, you're thinking that you don't have the accent, we do).
I'm a big Python fan and with all the Python stuff you've reacted to I wonder why you haven't reacted to Time Bandits yet. It was directed by Terry Gilliam, the guy who does the animation for Python. You also have been getting some requests for Hot Shots. That would be great but you should watchTop Gun first.
Your channel is awesome. Kep up the good work.

And, oh yeah, "All the President's Men" and "Born on the Fourth of July" (starring Hoffman and Cruise, respectively), are great too. But both movies may be a little too steeped in US history to have the same impact on you as they did on American audiences.

So many pretentious, over-blown, over-rated Hollywood wannabe-a-blockbusters. But now and then comes a devastating, yet uplifting and sweet, sweet film. Folks like to make fun of Tom Cruise, but this earns him a pretty bulletproof clinch on my respect. Hoffman was very good, of course, but Cruise was the MVP. And the story could not have been sweeter and, ultimately, more tender and moving. I know you covered this a year ago but it only just came up in my feed, and I'm really glad you covered it with a sweet reaction. Thank you.

I have this little mental game that I play called "Who Would I Cast?"
Basically, you take some movie you like, like this one, but you imagine making it 30-40 (or however many years) earlier. So in this case, instead of it being made in 1988, I imagine making it in, say, 1953, 35 years earlier.
Okay, so I'm going to make the movie Rainman in 1953. Who do I cast?
    As Charlie Babbitt... James Dean.
And as Raymond... [drum roll]... Lou Costello.
Yeah, 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 Lou Costello, of 'Abbott and Costello.'
Now, to my admittedly limited knowledge, Lou Costello never in his life played any sort of serious dramatic role on film, and I have no idea if he had anything like the chops that would be needed to pull this off... but in my mind's eye, I like to imagine he did, and then he suddenly wins the Oscar™ for best actor, and then for the rest of his life, he gets to throw that shit in Bud Abbott's face, because fuck that guy.

My favorite Dustin Hoffman movie is Kramer vs. Kramer about a divorced father fighting for custody of his son. It might not be the best movie to react to. But a great movie you should see none the less.
For Tom Cruise, Minority Report might be a great movie to react to if you haven't seen it already. It's the futuristic tale that asks the age old question of are we in charge of creating our destiny? Or is our future already predetermined and unchangeable?
