The bit with the dog being dragged along is one of the best sight gags ever. I love it when the animal performers are so good it feels like they actually get the joke. Carl Reiner, plaintiff #1 in the OptiGrab lawsuit, directed the film. His son Rob Reiner - a director in his own right - played the driver who gave Navin the ride to the end of the fence. Among other worthwhile Steve Martin films are "Pennies From Heaven", "Three Amigos" and "Parenthood".

Back in the day, before convenience store type of gas stations, gas station bathrooms were located outside of the gas station. Owners would keep their bathrooms locked to keep out the homeless people. You had to ask for a key to go to the bathroom. Many times the key would get stolen or the patron would forget to return it and this meant the owner had to incur cost to change the lock. Many owners went to great extremes to prevent their key from getting stolen or lost. Using a heavy car rim as a key chain was the most common one that I saw. Others would simply keep your drivers license until you returned the key.

About the restroom key attached to the metal wheel from a car: Back in the days of full service gas stations in America, for some reason that was never clear to me, some people would ask for then steal the restroom keys. As a way to try and prevent this, stations would attach the key to a larger object like a 12" to 16" piece of wood (plastic, metal, or anything substantial of any reasonable size were also used).
I did also see a station that used stuffed plush animal toys. The realized they were losing even more keys because people were more interested in stealing the toys than the keys. Yeah, this idea didn't last long. I do have to say though that I believe this movie is the only time I ever saw the use of a vehicle wheel of any kind 🤔.

So glad you had a good laugh with this classic comedy. And now, because you asked...
    Steve Martin REACTS:
    1979 - The Jerk
    1987 - Roxanne
1987 - Planes, Trains and Automobiles
    1999 - Bowfinger
There are other good movies with SM, but I'm certain you will absolutely enjoy all the above.

"Show her your special purpose then" haha. This movie was on network tv a lot when I was a kid. But it was edited (the dog's name was Stupid). It's so dumb but I'm really attached to it. Partly because before that I heard his stand-up on records, first stand-up I ever heard. He was a "wild and crazy guy" back then!

"The Grand Canyon" was excellent, though more dramatic than comedic, and Steve's role in it was a supporting one. Still, it deserves more attention .

Steve Martin is a genius. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Pennies From Heaven, All of Me, The Man With Two Brains are all great examples of his creativity. Honorable mentions go to Roxanne and LA Story. This film is based on some of Steve's stand-up material. He wrote a memoir, Born Standing Up, which I can enthusiastically recommend.

The Shinola bit comes from an old saying, "You don't know shit from Shinola" (Shinola is a type of shoe polish here in the States). It basically means "You're ignorant". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinola There are so many quotable lines in this movie. Right around this time Steve Martin was actually married to Bernadette Peters (Marie in this movie). Carl Reiner and Steve Martin made several movies together.

I remember the first time I saw my name in the phone book. I felt the same way. I mean I didn’t get as excited and ridiculous as Navin, but I definitely had the “I’m somebody!” state of mind.

I delivered the Yellow Pages to businesses in the mid-80's for extra cash. Just about every other business somebody would grab the stack of phone books and go running and skipping around yelling, "The new phone book's here! I'm somebody!"

Steve Martin started his career as a stand-up comic. Some of his stage routines, such as Cat Juggling, made it into the film. He also had a big hit with his song King Tut, which I saw the first time on SNL.
