    Monitor Audio Silver 300( G7) VS Dali Opticon 6 mk2?

    • @JayDpwnz
      @JayDpwnz 3 года назад +13

      I had a chance to a/b the monitor audio silver 200 7g and the dali opticon 6 mk2. Honestly I would recommend you do so too if you're thinking of purchasing. To me the silver 200 was more natural, had slightly more clarity and richness. Particularly in orchestral tracks, instruments like trumpets sounded more realistic and lifelike.
      However I'm sure you'll find some people (maybe yourself) prefer dali more. Their isn't a massive difference between the two. The sales rep I talked to told me that the dali would give more dynamics in the low end (which is a mute point if you get a sub) but something you should consider. It wasn't something I was able to test while listening - but I have also read in other places about the dalis being agile and dynamic. Worth noting that the silver 300 7g is rated to go down lower to 33hz compared to the dali 49hz.
      In terms of soundstage, I found the dali had a bit more width to the soundstage whereas the monitor audio had more depth. Instrument separation seemed slightly better for me on monitor audio but didn't really test too deeply
      There's also price, positioning and finishing to consider. Currently in my country dali are £50 more expensive. £1500 vs £1450 for the silver 300 7g. I have seen dali drop down to £1250 on black friday and £999 the day after black friday. If you can get it on sale it's something you should go for.
      For positioning, dali recommend the speaker face straight forward with no toe in, with your listening positioning being 30degrees off axis to the speaker. It can otherwise sound bright. Dalis can be listened to as far back as 20cm from the back wall, whereas the monitor audio is rated from atleast 30cm from the wall. Worth noting if you need to place the closer to the wall than that the monitor audio does come with port plugs in the box which may be a decent option if you buy a separate subwoofer.
      From what was described to me, the quality of sound from the dali can differ between what amp you use and what your listening position is. I had someone argue with me recently saying that dali were better using a Naim amp. If you want to spent £2500 on an amp to make the dali perform optimally then be my guest. All though it is worth noting that they should both run fine on a decent mid range av reciever like x3700h. The dali being rated at 4ohm nominal impedence means it's more prone to needing a decent amp to match up to it.
      On the other hand the monitor audio to my listening is more efficient and will play louder with less power. It also has better dispersion so both on axis and off axis listening is more consistent. From what I've read online, both should measure fairly neutral from their optimal listening positioning, but dali will measure bright on axis (even though opticons are more neutral than most dalis). The silver 500 7g measures more neutral, you can read the report/review from hifi news but the objective measurements look good for this series.
      In terms of build and finishes. The wood finishes on the silver series look better than the wood on the dalis. All of monitor audio finishes look great. Not to bash dali which look good in its own regard, the monitor audio just looks better. Also the grills on the dali are not magnetic whereas they are magnetic on the monitor audio.
      Even though I came away buying the monitor audio. I tried to be as unbiased as possible, I would recommend listening to both in a showroom from an audio dealer

      @@JayDpwnz have you heard the monitor audio silver 200 6g? Right now its available for huge discounts. Is the 7g much better?

    • @JayDpwnz

      @@hclandscapes I didn't have a chance to test in person but there is a German youtube video that A/B tests the 6g and 7g, it may be the upper model but the points will still stand.
      From what I heard they are more similar than different. The 6g stock is running out fast, so if you are interested, I would recommend listening them as soon as you can. If they are half the price of the 7g, I can't say from what I heard in that RUclips video that the 7g is twice as good. Make of that as you will.
      One of the main differences is cabinet design. The 6g used a bolt mechanism to secure the drivers. These bolts used to sometimes come loose in shipping and it would be up to the end user to tighten them using the specific supplied instructions. Not ideal. The cabinet design of the 7g is built way better but I'm sure this is also part of the increased cost. Once set up, it shouldn't be too much of a problem but I expect the 7g to have less cabinet resonances, just by its build.
      In terms of sound. The main difference would be the improved tweeter/waveguide on the 7g. I would say that the 6g might have a slightly wider sounderstage with a softer sound. Which a lot of people may like. The 7g is noticeably more detailed, has a slightly less wide soundstage, but the stage is also a bit deeper. The improved wave guide in the 7g seems to allow for better directivity for off axis listening. The 7g is also rated to go lower for bass, however this may not be noticeable much if you are using subwoofer(s).
      I would encourage you to read/watch some reviews. Listen to it in person if you can. There is a good technical run down of the silver 100 6g on audiosciencereview if you curious about the technical performance and design of the series.

      @@JayDpwnz bit worrying about the driver bolts coming loose from the cabinet, I've not heard about that happening.
      One thing i did read about was the outrigger feet on the 6g, apparently its not very good the plate metal is too thin making it wobble easily.
      The feet on the new 7G looks considerably better.

    • @JayDpwnz
      @JayDpwnz 3 года назад

      @@hclandscapes I have bought the silver 300 7g and the supplied feet are very stable. If you really put your hands on it and push you can get it to wobble a bit, but that thing isn't moving during playback. If you listen to Andrew robinson recent review of the silver 500 7g, he said that the feet don't add much compared to them being off, so he just left the feet off. This might be the case with the 6g as well. If you're worried about wobble then leave the feet off.
