But is it not intentional? I believe his full name is Yamato Sarukui, I thought Bokuto used Saru as a nickname BECAUSE it means monkey. If that's the case then them translating it to monkey is not that incorrect. It lets the viewers know the context/meaning behind Saru as a nickname as a non-japanese viewer and not him just calling him Saru. Am I wrong?

It didn't surprise me. I knew he would love Bokuto because I do get Bokuto's vibes and all that jazz. Bokuto may be crazy, but his game approach is really mature, although Akaashi is far better at that than him.
I knew he would like Bokuto as a person and his personality but I thought he was gonna criticise the fact that with his attitude he is the team Captain 🤭
@@ManonLcz If you watched Coach Donny's comments closely he did say each team will have individual need for the captain and Fukurodani needs Bokuto as he is. Daichi, in my opinion, would not draw out as much out of Fukurodani as Bokuto does with his personality.
@@marikothecheetah9342 yes I agree I'm only saying that because before he also criticized the choice of making Oikawa captain thinking it was just because he was the best player but doesnt have good attitude, which a lot of us back then thought he was going to dislike that Bokuto is his team's captain that's all I was pointing out no shade nothing I'm really glad he likes Bokuto so far but it also probably due to the fact that we see a lot more of Bokuto being a goofball with a lot of positive energy before seeing his bad attitude when it was more or less the other way around with Oikawa :)

While we're appreciating the subtleties of the characters and their writing, I love that Takeda-sensei, who is a contemporary Japanese literature teacher, often speaks in metaphors and poetry to get points across. It juxtaposes characters like Ukai who speak in practical terms or Hinata who (to put it nicely) talks in abstractions like "WOOSH. KABOOM. FWAAAAAH"

Kenma loves watching Hinata play but being on his team would be hellish for him because Hinata is like a mini dictator lmao 😂. He doesn't even need to yell his expectation like Kageyama his joy and energy is so high he's terrifying. I think before everyone else Kenma can see that.
His presence on itself is forcing others to do better and I can absolutely understand how that can become exhausting for someone like Kenma

Me too! Even though Bokuto's emo mode looks super dramatic. Feeling emo or defeated when you keep failing at something is completely normal and Coach Donny probably relates the same way from his experiences
i've been commenting for a while about how coach donny might find a player like bokuto troublesome from a coach's perspective especially because bokuto is their captain and strongest hitter, so those weeks of piled up tension and nervousness suddenly left my body during this episode 😭

This is way beyond reacting to an anime. Giving us volleyball technical and life lessons at the same time having a collaboration with another sports enthusiast. This is the true definition of a REACTION. Hope we can see more of this. Way to go coach!

Also, If you need to take a break from reactions for health or work, that'd be completely understandable. Therefore prioritise that over this!
fun fact about monkey's name: his name is 猿杙 大和(Sarukui Yamato) which you can see the first kanji of his family name is literally monkey. His family name is from Japanese of Milky eagle owl, and actually, all members of Fukurodani's family name is from Japanese of a specific species of owl (except Bokuto which is simply the kanji of owl).

Bokuto’s surname’s kanji 木兎 pronounced mimizuku as a word, and Bokuto is from the pronounce of the two kanji when you read them as individual kanji instead of a single word. ( English is not my first language so I hope that makes sense ;;;

Akaashi is Fukurodani's setter. I love his dynamic with Bokuto.
Btw when Bokuto describes the feint as 'not a tool to run away' you can hear Akaashi sigh a bit. Remember when Bokuto feinted against Tsukishima's scary fingers? Yeah.
As you mentioned, there are 4 + seasons worth of material for Haikyuu so don't worry about the lack of Tsukki development initially. Especially since his change was one more of a mindset and trying to open up a new viewpoint, that definitely takes more time to develop.

I really love Bokuto, even his emo mode. He's truly a great motivator of his opponents, but I love that he's written as someone that can motivate, but who also needs help remaining motivated themselves. I, too, have this issue, so his character is incredibly relatable. Just fyi, he's not just one of the best spikers in his prefecture, but he's in the top 5 in the country. I love how even though he's such a great player, he spends time helping Hinata. He's another example of what many of Haikyuu's best characters are--servant leaders. :)

Bokuto is the type of player to inspire both his teammates and his opponents to do better. they say that in the manga a lot, not sure if it's in the anime, but it's realyl true. He is one of my favorite characters
The relationship of coach and the guy who had the nasty tip reminds me of how kageyama learned from oikawa through observation rather than direct instruction of course minus the toxicity

in haikyuu, you don't have to worry about character development. It will happen, even to the most "insignificant" players. It will just happen, especially when you at least expect it or have already forgotten about this possibility.

when Hinata fell down and had to be subbed out during the Kamomedai match, Narita was subbed in and it is shown that he had to overcome his fear in order to play the best he could. It's nothing big and stuff, but I'd say the way he's portrayed is pretty nuanced

Bokuto has a very short temper which makes him funnier and during Bokuto’s emo mode Coach thought Bokuto would say “Give me a toss” but Bokuto said the entire opposite 😂

I think something little talked about is Coach Ukai's improvement. He saw he made some coaching errors (expected as he is a young coach), and even he was able to take wisdom from his grandfather and the other coaches to improve his direction to the team. Everyone improved on many levels, even some of the less-intense or less-motivated characters. Motivation & improvement is contagious. You either get better or get left behind. This is why this is one of my favorite seasons.
This whole training arc is one of my favorites and I'm so glad you made it to season 2 coach since you were getting burnt out on season 1. Soooo funny and the positivity and growth is just 👌.
It's a bit strange, but every time Kageyama does the new toss I can feel how the ball would feel :'D I'm a adult figure skater and when we jump and reach the highest point, it feels like we are floating mid air or standing still for a moment before we get back down. It's only a very short time, but in that moment it feels like a very long time.
Coach: "maybe we're gonna see some other cool hits from bokuto. He's gonna step it up a little bit"

It's impossible not to love Bokuto. He is 100% the star of his own show lol. Easily my favorite character
Hinata and Kageyama are pulling each other along, progressing their improvement just by playing together.
They're literally driven by spite and competitiveness but never take anything personally and takes care of each other emotionally which is really beautiful to me. Spite is an amazing motivator if used properly!
This is one of my favourite episodes and I was really excited for you to watch it. I love seeing how weeks of training and frustration are finally paying off, to the point where even Kageyama lets himself visibly express excitement when he’s always so closed off. The fact that they miss and keep failing some moves makes me really happy too, they didn’t just suddenly get perfect after nailing it once, it’s still something new for them that will take more time to master.
In regards to Bokuto, I really love his character, he’s my favourite. At first he may seem like the perfect player, he’s passionate and works hard to be better and better each day, and his work pays off! He’s not the 5th best spiker in all of Japan for nothing. He’s his team’s captain, the golden player, the one who challenges both his team and his opponents to be better, to give their all to the game. Then, the Emo Mode™️ comes in and makes many think he’s just childish, when for me, it’s just another proof of his effort. Yes, it’s not a good habit for him to have, and he should definitely learn how to control his emotions, but he’s just a high schooler!! He’s got time to improve and grow up (just like Oikawa, many people dislike him because of his childishness, his skill makes them forget he’s a kid)

You hit it right on the money! But I think Kenma is saying more than passion, it’s Hinata’s constant drive to do something new, to push further, even if that means completely reinventing himself from scratch.
That commitment to growth is so strong it is both admirable and almost intimidating.

It’s a pity that he didn’t(might have missed) read about what bokuto’s position and acts are to hinata on the last episode comments. It’s a very important part to look out on every words and actions Bokuto do and say, as to how Hinata does in future,being influenced by him, is kinda fun part while watching til s4 and even in the season5 story. Bokuto’s position is kinda big role to Hinata. Just Remember, they are both Birds 👍
Coach correction on the quick. This new quick is not a bit slower than the first one. It is the same insane speed, but it stops in midair thanks to the rotation and spin Kageyama puts in it. That’s the unrealistic aspect of the quick, it can’t be done in real life(or no one has done it at least) because it needs super talent and super practice. But it’s just as fast as the first one

This is one of my episodes of haikyuu. This training camp sounds like such a cool experience and is really what made me get into volleyball. They really just dedicate themselves to improvement and growing as a team and that sounds awesome
Ahh, Finally Coach Donny's ""Hey Hey Hey..."
hey coach! 😊 just a heads up - i think you actually misconstrued how the Quick 2.0 actually works. last episode you mentioned how the animation with all the spinning seemed excessive, but that animation was to illustrate how kageyama now sets the freak quick with a heavy backspin. it’s not slower than the old quick at all; kageyama still sets with “godlike” accuracy and speed, but rather, the backspin that he puts on the ball causes friction as it moves through the air, which kills the ball’s momentum right around where hinata would hit it -- and it’s that abrupt loss of momentum, caused by the backspin, that gives hinata that extra moment to decide where to place his spike. not any less speed!
i think you normally understand haikyuu through your own experience watching and playing volleyball, which is a huge part of what makes watching your videos so fun. but i think in this case, where kageyama is doing something that setters never do (crazy backspin on the ball with a nigh-impossible accuracy) it makes it a little harder to see, haha.

15:52 When I try to understand the physical possibility of the ball just stopping at the highest point, I can only think of the magnus effect due to Kageyama's spin on the ball. But even so, the direction of the spin would make the ball go up higher and not technically stop. Perhaps it spins so fast that it's able to push back the air flowing against it, but I don't know if that's possible. So, just as you've said, I think a low-spin toss almost like how a float serve would move in the air would work better.
I just love how Akaashi (Fukurodani setter) was able to think about three different outcomes of his setting decision and chose the best option in just 0,5s! I hope you'll get to see his amazing abilities not just athletically but also psychically in the next episodes!
To be clear as well, bokuto is one of the top 5 hitters in the country. Fukurodani is nationally rated. Bokuto is known as a very strong but "Streaky" hitter. But once he is on a good streak, he is unstoppable. Akaashi holds together bokuto during his off times. The first team to realyl give a challenge to Fukurodani is the one that realized that to beat them, they have to take out both Bokuto AND Akaashi.

The reason why Takeda-san called a time-out is that, officially, he is the one being the head coach, as he was there for Karasuno before Ukai agreed to coach, making Ukai second coach (even tho he does the main part of coaching). Via rules, only the head coach can call a time-out, so most of the time, when Ukai feels like their team need one, he nods to Takeda-sensei to ask for a time-out.

The amazing thing about the show is that it's so symbolic. Karasuno are crows. Crows steal the property of other animals to survive and thrive. That's exactly how the players if karasuno are copying moves of different teams to get stronger.
Bokuto's influence is actually really great to karasuno. Not only to just hinata but the others as well. He truly is a wonderful character and its no wonder why he is towards the top of everyones fave list
The dynamic between Hinata and Kageyama is a lot like Goku and Vegeta. Constantly pushing each other to improve. And they’re a dangerous duo because it came from a place of rivalry

Fun fact: Bokuto wears the number 4 despite being the captain of Fukorodani (captains usually wear 1), because some schools in Japan reserve #4 for the ace. Another example of this is Seijoh's ace, Iwaizumi. Funnily enough Karasuno's #4 is Nishinoya, the super libero!
