  • Dear Sewing Friend in this episode of "Let's talk about" we are talking about Sewing Fails. Not an easy topic, not much discussed and really, not much loved, but I think we can learn SO MUCH from our fails, regardless if they're in sewing or other parts of life. I hope this little video can be as a pep talk to you - if you're in the middle of the sewing fail. Believe me, I have been there - and it can be really bad... but I hope this truly helps! Many swing hugs,
    Alisa

    • Instruction sheets are a step-by-step written instruction on how I drafted this or that project, so that you can follow along. Instruction Sheets are available as a back catalogue, but there are no new Instruction sheets for projects starting with July 2022.
    • The templates are ONLY for the small projects, like a basket, or coaster, or towel wrap and etc.
    • I have also created sewing reference sheets and practice sheets, as well as sketches that you can use and some small-scale garment parts that you can use to practice "slash and spread" techniques and dart manipulations. Instruction sheets are focused on the drafting process and less on the sewing sequence as that is shown in the video. Sewing steps can be sometimes written out, and sometimes referenced back to the original video.

Yes, my sewing fails have been my greatest teachers. I usually try at the time to fix the problem but sometimes I have to put it aside and think it through before returning to it. I can usually fix or at least salvage the fabric and am pleased with myself. What also helps is the sewing RUclipsr's I watch that admit to struggles and fails and even show fixes that can help us with ideas on what to try to fix our projects. Thank you.

My sewing fails are often because of wrong fabric choices 😅 it’s such a challenge to find great match when trying out new fabrics! Thanks for the discussion is really inspiring!

I fail a lot and not afraid to say it. Failing is inevitable. I’m learning. I don’t like to save my fails. Getting them out of sight is helpful for me. You have such a gift of inspiring others. I appreciate you!❤️

Kristi, thank you! I saw your recent Instagram post and it made me feel like I am not alone, had this happen to me before - and had to give up on that make because the seams kept falling apart. So sad but lesson learned :) thank YOU for being here, always makes me happy to read your thoughts!

Yes you are absolutely correct...even the most experienced sewist has occasional fails! I do have over 50 years of experience and still have fails quite often unfortunately! It's just one of those things that happens to all types of creative people (not just sewing!). So we just pick ourselves up, dust off and keep it moving until the next time! You always learn something from them for sure!

When I learned to sew 5 years ago it was certainly the case that people didnt share their fails but over the last year or so I've seen that tide change significantly in the sewing community.
On my channel I'm known for showing my makes, warts and all. I sometimes wonder if I should tone that side down for fear of coming across as incompetent but I do it so others can learn from my journey. I get feedback a lot that it helps so I'll continue. Like you say, mistakes are opportunities.

OOH - I can't tell you the number of fails I have had since I came back to sewing a year ago! Errors such as neckbands on back to front, trousers legs sewn on inside out and I can go on and on! Mostly because I haven't read the instructions properly or just not read them at all! Used the wrong fabric or cut against the stretch or of the grain! Not measured myself properly is another one! However what this means is that I have earned such a lot! Not a fail but a learning opportunity! It is these things that push you on and encourage you to try harder. I have learned lots of ways to salvage these makes and in truth, these fails have made me a better sewist. Such a thought provoking and encouraging vlog Alisa - thank you x

If we do not have fails we seriously do not learn. I have been sewing since I was 5 yo and I am 48 now....many many fails...but rarely do others in my life see them as such! We can be so very harsh on ourselves. I have been making quilts for 20 years now and what I see as a fail others have asked if they could have the quilt, which is awesome. Others see our work as amazing talent and skills coming to fruition. So just keep sewing xxxxx

Alexandra, that is also SO TRUE! I have had people admire something that I consider an "okay" sewing make! So true, we can be very very very harsh towards ourselves! Thank you for your comment!

I really needed to hear this today! I am in the process of salvaging a pair of Ginger jeans that I cut an entire size too small! After adding a panel to the side seam and making much smaller seam allowances to the inseam they fit pretty great! all I have left are the waistband jeans buttons and hemming!!

Great Video Alisa. I have one shirt that has been put away for a long time. It pretty much checks all the failure boxes - bad pattern for the fabric - bad fabric for the details - what was I thinking. You have encouraged me to pull it back out after many months of resting to see what I can do with it. It may end up as a fun pillow!!!

I have been sewing since I could talk. My grandmother was a seamstress with an incredible business. Her best advice was to press EVERYTHING. This applies to fails as well. If it is a small issue try to iron it before you consider it a fail. A simple ironing may actually fix it, or at least help you understand how the mistake happened.

I consider myself an intermediate sewer and my sewing fails are fortunately rare because I try to correct my fail as I go. As long as I have enough fabric to work with, I am good. I will unpick and modify until I am happy with the result. I also don't spend a lot on fabric, so if something becomes unwearable, I am cool with it. Sewing fails are part of sewing. No big deal!

The fear of failing, of wasting energy and resources, kept me from this craft for decades. Even though my home ec teacher (a seamstress by trade) said I showed talent. That is a LOT of time I could have been learning and making fewer fails. I hope my comment pushes those who feel trapped by that fear to push themselves a bit. For me, I found stepping back to a more simple pattern to work on my basic skills a bit and have a likely sewing win to boost my confidence. I was working on jeans.. the muslin and pattern is carefully placed in a box because I realized I bit off a bit more than I could chew. I now have a gorgeous pair of linen pants.. with inseam pockets. I am still not ready to work on those jeans, but I am closer to feeling ready by practicing some of the more "basic" stuff a bit, so I will have fewer struggles when I do get to it again.

Michele, this is inspiring - thank you for sharing! I can relate about not doing something for years just because I was scared of failing... Thank you for sharing this! And so true - sometimes we have to step back to basics to gain those skills and strength to move forward! Thank you again for sharing this!!!

I'm keeping a sewing journal, where I note down construction notes, but also "lessons learned" for each pattern. Especially in the beginning I made so many mistakes! But I always feel better about it when I note down what exactly I learned through that - and hopefully I won't repeat the same mistakes too often :)

Hi Alisa!! Wonderful vlog.. I was taught by my grandma when I was young learning to sew, you will always have a fail somewhere along the way & if you don’t accept them & learn from them then your failing yourself.. I totally believe in it.. Thanks for being so inspiring, it’s awesome....

Yesterday was a hard sewing day for me. I made three things, all three were fails. I threw the dress pattern away, wasn't worth a second look. I was upset, but cleaned up the room and decided to move on. Cheers!

It’s only a fail if you’ve learned nothing. Very true. I’m definitely in this group at the moment. 😂 in the end tho I’ll have salvaged it all. I will make velvet leggings out of the shawl for my granddaughter Ava for the next holiday season. The rest I’ll use for a dress for me or a velvet top and tunic top for Ava to match her leggings. Maybe even a few velvet scrunchies. Matching dress for Ava’s doll. Ya. It’ll work out. Have a great week Alisa. Looking forward to seeing your ceramic makes. 😘😊

Oh! The blue you are wearing in this video is so pretty, Alisa. I started sewing in the 1970s, but because of major health problems I had to start over. I forgot how to do math (who knew that would be so important? lol), and use of my right side. I am adapting to sewing with one hand - my non-dominant one - and my left foot. So, yes, sloppy sewing and sewing fails are the norm around here. ;) Great topic and video!

My sewing fails have a pet name: “wadder”. The project I wadded up and threw out! Had many of those. I’m not that bothered. Usually the fail is due to an inappropriate fabric choice. Fit problems or style choices are not so frequent anymore. Plus I am better now at making it work: just reworking it until I’m satisfied. This sort of fail increases my ingenuity/creativity. I have sewed for 50 years. Since age 12.

Need few more hours to finish and it will be ready for a date night on Saturday. :) and then dress for Alice with remnants. :) you inspire me to use same fabrics for something for her.
